Tales from the saleroom COULD THERE BE UNTOLD RICHES LURKING IN DUSTY CORNERS OF YOUR HOME? AS SOUTHSIDE DISCOVERS, THE WORLD OF ANTIQUES CAN STILL SPRING SOME SURPRISES. t was a deal not to be sneezed at. A charming little antique snuff box that would be just the thing to display on the sideboard.

Yours for two to three hundred pounds, according to the auctioneers.

True, one has even been known to soar to the dizzy heights of £2,000, but for that kind of price one would expect the very best money can buy.

Two of the potential new owners had other ideas. In a fevered few minutes of bidding, the price went up. And up.

Eventually, it came under the hammer – for £20,000.

Welcome to the unpredictable and fascinating world of antiques.

The snuff box dated back to a time when Regency bucks would partake of a pinch of the powdery, peppery substance as they retired to the drawing room for a couple of after-dinner Cognacs.

Auctioneer and valuer James Lewis has seen plenty of such incredible duels between rival buyers in his time.

Westside caught up with him at Bamfords’ saleroom in Bakewell. His skills as a natural raconteur are evident.

Clearly the media thinks so too, which is why he is now a familiar face on television programmes about antiques.

As it happens, James is also a collector of, and something of an authority on snuff boxes, a passion that has lasted for over 30 years. So he understands the mindset of the determined buyer.

“There were two collectors there and that’s all it needs. They continued long after everyone else had dropped out at around two-and-a-half-thousand,” he said. “If there are a thousand people in the room and all of them think something is worth 50 quid, then it’s worth precisely that. But if 998 think that way but two think it’s worth a thousand, it’s a different matter.”

It’s not every day that a buying frenzy brings a surprise result – and a windfall for the seller – but Bamfords’ saleroom has

seen some quite astonishing deals being done recently. Someone clearly fell in love with the lady in a 17th century painting, expected to fetch £400-£600, but which changed hands for £18,000.

Then there was the even more mindboggling instance of the Chinese twohandled drinking vessel, up for grabs at a measly £100-150. Sold for £28,000.

Even items which can be reasonably be said to be an acquired taste sometimes have the buyers scrambling for their cheque books.

Take the trio of porcelain elephants, predicted to fetch £1000-1500. Someone liked them enough to pay £5,800. Or an ornamental Irish shell work which started out with the same estimated price, but which found a new home for £13,000.

But even these pale into insignificance compared with the largest sum ever paid at auction. This for a Chinese vase, which along with other assorted bric-a-brac was shipped out during a house clearance in a spot just off the M25. The price? It made ‘a little’ over £50million.

The other remarkable thing about the vase was that it was sold in a general sale at a provincial saleroom. In fact it made more money for the company than it had made in its entire history. Apparently the ‘big boys’ in London had taken a look at it and decided it should be returned to the bric-a-brac from whence it came.

By the way, if you can suddenly hear the deafening clatter of dusty crockery being dragged out of kitchen cupboards for frantic scrutiny, it’s a sure sign the neighbours are reading this too.

According to James, the market simply follows the money. If a nation is doing well economically, there will be more individuals with deep pockets who drive demand – and prices – upwards.

“For example, we can’t get enough Oriental art at the moment. It is so keenly sought-after because it is a reflection on the fact that China’s economy is booming and this influences demand.

“A little while back it was the Russians with the emergence of all the oligarchs with big money That meant the pre-revolution items started to do very very well. It was always sought-after anyway. Then it was the turn of Japan, with the Japanese stock market prospering. Everything Oriental had to be Japanese. Now we want everything that is Oriental to be Chinese. Because

there is vast wealth in China, more than the entire European Union put together.

“The market for anything Chinese went crazy, whether it was for jade, amber, silver or porcelain.”

So where should the wise money go now? Where is the next investment hotspot?

James predicts it will be India.

“Like Russia and China, India has a massive cheap labour force. As the next big supplier of mass market cheap goods, you will see the heads of the big companies becoming very wealthy. And they will seek to buy back their art heritage.”

Perhaps the new owner of the trio of elephants should hold on to them for a little while after all.

owners think the treasure is a piece of junk.

Like the people who left an old painting on the wall when James’s firm did a house clearance in London. The owners didn’t think much of it. The auctioneers clearly did – it went under the hammer at £28,000.

There is an interesting postscript to this story. I swear it’s true. Just before interviewing James, there sprang to mind an old oil painting that I bought in a local saleroom for £500 some years ago, which is now in storage. I took a quick snap of it, thinking I might spring it on James to see him think on his feet.

And think he certainly did.

“About 1820…clearly done by a very good hand… Not sure who the sitter is…but possibly worth nearer £1,500…”

Go on James, don’t stop!

“As for the subject… he has a hairstyle rather like Lord Byron…”

Picking myself off the floor, I asked the obvious question in a hoarse whisper.

“Could it BE Lord Byron?”

The answer to this and other questions will emerge after the painting is seen in the flesh by James, who of course could not conclude too much from a photo. So I’m afraid you’ll have to wait. But I promise to tell you the result in future editions.

A garden building can have multiple uses

ur gardens have become oases of calm over the last 12 months, particularly during those balmy summer months when we were grateful for being able to spend the time outdoors and escape the realities of the ongoing pandemic. Now spring is in the air and there’s hope for an end to all restrictions - thoughts are already turning to our outdoor spaces and how we can make best use of them over the coming months.

Last year may have laid the foundations for what you would like to do with your garden but now’s the time to put those plans into action.

Whether you want a better space for entertaining, room for the kids, a gym or a dedicated garden office, there are a host of ways to make your dreams a reality.

Garden buildings rarely need planning permission (although there are exceptions which we have outlined later in this article) and can be fitted with water, electrics, heating and – most importantly – wifi, making them a real home from home.

With many people working from home over the last year, a garden office has become a viable and practical alternative to using a cramped corner in the kitchen, giving you peace, quiet and great views over your outdoor space.

Garden buildings aren’t limited to offices though and can be used for all manner of things including a gym, a playroom, cinema room or a bar/entertaining space - the only limit is your imagination.

Perhaps not quite as grand but equally effective at enhancing your outdoor space is adding something like an outdoor kitchen, bar or pizza oven which, when combined with a decked or paved area and comfortable seating, can create a truly impressive space to entertain your guests – which will become a reality when restrictions hopefully lift on 21 June.

However big or small your ambitions, over the next few pages we look at garden buildings and additions and how they can improve your outdoor space and speak to some local companies who are in a prime position to help your achieve your garden goals.

PLANNING: hat you’re wanting to build in your garden is a key aspect in determining whether or not you’ll need planning permission.

However, the size of whatever you’re planning to build will have the biggest impact.

According to the UK government, a building or enclosure that is being built within the boundaries of a house that is ‘incidental to the enjoyment of the dwellinghouse’ is designated as a Class E building.

A Class E building does not require planning permission if it, and other existing buildings, do not cover more than 50 per cent of the total area of the house. They also cannot be built in front of the principal elevation of the house — so no building out on your front garden!

You’ll need planning permission if: • Your garden building is going to be more than one storey or have eaves higher than 2.5 metres.

• The overall height is going to be more than 4 metres for a dualpitched roof.

• The overall height is going to be more than 3 metres for other roof types.

• The overall height is going to be more than 2.5 metres if the building is within 2 metres of the boundary of the curtilage (borders or fences) of your home.

• The building will take up more than 50 per cent of all land outside the house. This includes your current garden buildings — if your shed takes up 20 per cent of the land outside your house and you want to build a log cabin that will take up 35 per

cent of the land, you’d need planning permission as combined, they take up 55 per cent of the land.

• You want a veranda, balcony, or raised platform as part of the building.

• If your residence is a listed building, you’ll need planning permission regardless.

If you’re building a shed or summer house that doesn’t extend further than the dimensions above, you should be good to go without planning permission in terms of dimensions and space requirements and regulations. The vast majority of log cabins, garden sheds, and summer houses will class as Class E buildings and not need planning permission in this case.

If you’re planning to make your outdoor building a place to work from or simply socialise in, you won’t usually need planning permission (unless the dimensions extend as above). However, the use of your garden building can impact the need for planning permission.

You’ll need planning permission if: • You’re planning to use your outdoor building for sleeping accommodation — such as a summerhouse in the garden for adult children or elderly relatives to live in to retain their privacy while living at home.

• The building could, in any way, impact your neighbours’ right to privacy. Think tree houses — your kids will love them, but your neighbour might not be best pleased.

How easy is it to put a building in your garden?

It could not be simpler - we deal with all the groundworks (or can organise it) and

don’t need a concrete base or patio to install on to. We sort the electrical and internet connection and they are left ready to move in to.

Is it just offices or do your rooms have other functions?

The list of garden room uses really is endless. We have built yoga studios, TV rooms, teenage dens, libraries, offices, Split use rooms with storage areas, gyms, workshops, paint studios, have built a room for a taxidermist, a model train set and a miniature railway station.

What have you been working on recently?

Our teams have already installed half a dozen rooms this year – a gym, an office with a bathroom, a huge furniture workshop, a dedicated garden room and a couple of our Toby offices.

What’s been your favourite project?

We built an off grid room on an allotment for Sage, a Sheffield charity who promote the mental and physical well-being of adults in our community. Their existing meeting room was a leaking shed and it felt fantastic to provide them with an up-grade.

The carpet industry is booming, according to a UK trade body.

Talking about this on TV, T Nutt & Sons Ltd, a Derbyshire-based family-run retailer, believe the upswing comes at a time when some customers have more cash to spend than usual. And on the place they are spending most of their time.

"With the first lockdown, people couldn't go on holiday," said Keven Nutt, a director at T Nutt & Sons Ltd. "So they had a surplus of money."

When the first wave of restrictions were eased in the summer, and the business could fully trade again, "it was incredibly busy," said Mr Nutt, adding sales were the briskest he had seen in 26 years.

The shop shut again for England's second lockdown in November, although fittings continued.

Mr Nutt estimated there had been 30 per cent more custom approaching Christmas compared to previous years.

But he added manufacturers had not always been able to fulfil orders and whereas in normal times customers would wait three to four weeks following order placement, many recently were seeing longer waits for fittings.

Inspiration from Granny Mary CRISIS HAS BEEN THE GREAT REVEALER FOR WILLIAM SUTHERLAND WHO IS NOW AIMING TO MAKE HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF. uccess has not come on a plate for William Sutherland.

Born into a business family whose name was synonymous with that of a nationally-recognised brand, he’s had his fair share of ups and downs – even before the Covid curse wrought havoc to so many entrepreneurs and their dreams.

The fact that he is still firmly in the driving seat of his company is down to

some inspiration courtesy of his late great-grandmother - or rather the product she made in the candlelit cellar of her two-up, two-down house almost exactly 100 years ago.

It was there in 1920 that Mary Sutherland took to making beef spread for her husband Eddie to take on his sandwiches to sustain him on his travels as a tea salesman. Word soon caught on

about Mary’s sensational potted meat and presently Eddie was loading up his tea van with orders from eager customers. This did not go unnoticed by his employer Lyons Tea, who summarily fired him.

The business continued to blossom under successive generations of the family, eventually serving a national market.

And the rest, as they say, is history. But it’s a history that William is determined to keep alive and at the centre of his business thinking.

“We decided to call the new range Granny Mary’s because it isn’t just a fictional name for marketing purposes.

She was a real person who genuinely worked hard at establishing the business and the image of her on the package is real too,” he said.

Although the Sutherlands sold the business in 1991, by which time it was a household name and supplied stores across the UK with a hugely extended product range including pies and quiches, William and his father Alistair harboured an ambition to make a comeback.

And so in 2012, father and son opened for business on an industrial estate in Hasland, near Chesterfield. The venture traded as two separate concerns. Granny Mary’s served the retail market, while Prochef later came into being as a supplier of a wide range of pates and terrines to the hospitality sector There have been the good times, with contracts to supply high street names like Waitrose and Morrisons and a devoted following at farmers markets and delis.

Prochef too enjoyed its share of success, building a customer list that included major organisations, for example football clubs such as Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City and Derby County.

And there have been the not so good.

William takes up the story.

“We were doing quite well with Waitrose, with a presence in eight to ten of their stores and pleasing sales, but

then we met with the head buyer for our category and it was a case of there’s no room for expansion in Waitrose. He was new to the job and a young buyer. I don’t think he really saw the benefits.”

But worse was still to come.

“We ended up pulling out of retail completely, because it was costing us a fortune. We were having to hand-deliver everything. So we ventured into food service with Prochef and kind of shelved Granny Mary’s, though we still did farmers markets and events at the weekends.

“But the main focus was on sales to national wholesalers and large organisations based across the UK and Ireland.

“Then last March came. And everything changed. >>> Continued on the next page

“Hospitality shut down, we had pulled out of retail, and the result was we lost pretty well 90 per cent of our turnover.

“I faced a situation whereby I was asking myself ‘do I want to continue or do I give up’? We had practically pulled out of retail sales so that side didn’t exist.

And no-one knew when hospitality was going to make a comeback.

“I then thought of a saying which has stuck with me since the times I used to go to listen to motivational speakers. It is that crisis is the great revealer. And there was no doubt you couldn’t get a bigger crisis than this. It made me realise how much I wanted to fight on.”

The first step was to cut the product range from around 150 to just two – potted beef and chicken liver pate. With 40 www.sheffieldvibe.com

most of the staff furloughed, the small management team focused on survival, doing everything from the production to the packaging. With the help of a lucky break with Morrisons and copious quantities of midnight oil, the business gradually re-invented itself.

Today it is on the shelves in a chain of Morrisons, together with a network of 50 to 60 butchers and bakers. And William can take pride in a turnaround which from a standing start of nil production has seen sales rise to almost 2,500 units a week.

There are plans for new packaging, new marketing strategies and new products. In the spirit of his greatgrandparents, William Sutherland is aiming to make history repeat itself.

GRAB YOUR WALKING BOOTS AND GET OUTSIDE. hether we’ve been in tiers one, two or three or in full lockdown, walking has been the one constant throughout the whole pandemic. It’s probably formed the largest part of your daily exercise, can be undertaken alone or by the whole family and can be as long or short as you need it to be.

If you live in south-west Sheffield or north derbyshire you’re pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to walk to, with lots of parks, gardens, woodlands and moorlands to explore, all at a safe distance of course.

Sheffielders can access any number of parks and gardens close to their homes, including Endcliffe, Millhouses and the Botanical Gardens. If you want to stretch your legs a bit further, a walk up through Hutcliffe Woods, past Beauchief Abbey on to see the deer (if you know, you know) is a great way to entertain the family, while the welltrodden route up through the Porter Valley to Forge Dam enjoyable. And

you can get a coffee or hot chocolate en route to warm you up. Experienced walkers might want to tackle the Sheffield Round Walk, which starts in Endcliffe Park and loops for 15 miles around some of the city’s greenest landscapes.

If you live in Derbyshire and have Baslow, Bakewell or Castleton as your base you’re in touching distance of the likes of Chatsworth, Edensor, Mam Tor and the Hope Valley. The countryside is your oyster.

Like everyone, here at Westside we’ve caught the walking bug too and have been trying to vary our routes to keep us motivated. With that in mind, here are a selection of walks, for all ages and abilities, if you’re looking for something different (or not so). For longer walks, good, sturdy walking boots are recommended and remember to take some refreshments with you as options can be limited during the current lockdown.

Ecclesall Woods From springtime bluebells to autumn’s glorious shades of orange, Ecclesall Woods is a great place to visit at any time of year. With entrances on Dobcroft Road, Whirlowdale Road, Whirlow Park Road, Abbeydale Road, Abbey Lane and Limb Lane, it’s easy enough to access the woods wherever you live in south-west Sheffield.

Once inside you’ll find clearly marked routes of between 1km and 5km which follow good tracks, though they can get a little muddy on wet days. Explore to your heart’s content.

Porter Valley With Endcliffe Park as your starting point head up (or is it down?) through Bingham Park past Shepherd’s Wheel across Hangingwater Road and Whitely Wood Road before reaching the Fulwood and Forge Dam. About two miles in length, It’s a pleasant walk for the whole family. The first part is tarmac pathways before splitting into differing routes after Hangingwater but is mainly flat throughout and suitable for prams and buggies. Children will love the stepping stones just after Whitely Wood Road and there’s lots to explore along the way.

At Forge Dam there’s a children’s play area, some outdoor seating by the pond and the cafe is open for takeaway drinks and snacks - there’s a large marquee too if the weather’s being typically British.

This stretch of trail is noticeably busier on weekends but there’s still ample room to social distance.

Sheffield Parks Walk The near 15-mile round walk, which starts at Endcliffe Park, is a great way to discover hidden Sheffield gems.Taken in sections (if you don’t want to tackle the whole thing), it is pretty easy going for the most casual Sunday stroller (though there is a steep incline through Lady Spring Wood at Beauchief).The walk is signposted extremely well, so even if you are not familiar with the route it would be hard to go astray.

The Route: 1. Start from Endcliffe Park at Hunters Bar and follow the Porter Brook through woodland to Bingham Park at the western end. Continue along the brook and Whiteley Woods passing the Forge Dam cafe on the way.

2. Head through the Mayfield Valley along Clough Lane to the peaceful wooded area of Porter Clough where you turn south to the little village of Ringinglow on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Pass through the village, head through the Limb Valley with the Limb Brook and woodland trails.

3. Walk through Whirlow Brook Park and continue south-east through Ecclesall Woods where you’ll pass Abbeydale Miniature railway. Continue towards Beauchief Abbey, passing through Ladies Spring Wood on the way. Beauchief Park includes the remains of the 12th century Abbey, a 17th century church and a pretty mill pond.

4. The route continues east to Meadowhead and Graves Park, after which you turn north through Lees Hall golf club and Meersbrook Park. The final section takes you through Chelsea Park and Brincliffe before finishing back at Endcliffe Park. >>>> www.sheffieldvibe.com 45

Bakewell/Chatsworth This six-mile walk from Bakewell takes you over the Monsal Trail, through some woods and to the picturesque village of Edensor, ending in the gem of the Derbyshire countryside, Chatsworth House.

The Route: 1. From the centre of Bakewell, cross the river of the medieval bridge and turn along Combs Lane. Walk along here until you reach a footpath sign by a gate on the left. Go up the tarmac drive and turn right and continue up the field side to a bridge over the Monsal Trail. Carry on up right, across the golf course and on a prominent track into the wood. Where a small stream comes down continue up steeply to a ladder stile over the wall at the top of the wood, then head half right for the clump of beech and a pond. Go over a stile by the pond, along its south side to another gate and stile.

2. Follow the grassy footpath for about half a mile, gently downhill keeping just left of the shallow depression to a gate, above a plantation. Carry on through this down a broad track towards Russian Cottage, but turn left before this and a ‘Dutch Barn’ at a signpost: Edensor.

Follow this through a gate - a track leads through plantations into Chatsworth Park, where a couple of benches make a pleasant point to stop and view Chatsworth in its setting, with Stand Woods and the Hunting Tower behind.

3. From here head between two plantations for a point just left of Edensor Church. On nearing the village, look for an electricity sub-station within a walled enclosure. To the right of this go through an unusual wrought-iron gate at the top of four stone steps, and so down to a tarmac road. Turn right down this road into the village of Edensor. Leave the village through the white gates, cross the main road, B6012, and take the footpath opposite. In a few minutes Chatsworth House comes into view.

4. From Chatsworth you have a choice of two routes back… a more direct one back through Edensor or a longer one which includes a walk by the River Derwent.

5. If you’re taking the longer route, cross back over the bridge over the river and turn immediately left, to follow a broad track of grass which does not follow the river but heads almost straight for the next bend in it. From here follow the river along to just after the ruined corn mill building on your right, then walk up the grassy slope to join the road. Cross and follow the tarmac road along the edge of 46 www.sheffieldvibe.com

the car park towards the garden centre.

6. Keep straight on past the garden centre (refreshment and toilets here) and the road shortly curves to the right, into Calton Lees. At a small grass triangle keep straight on up a track with a stream on your left. Follow the track up the valley for almost a mile to Calton Houses. The track is a public bridleway and zig-zags up between the houses and continues up the valley with a plantation close on the left.

Nearly 300m above Calton Houses the bridleway goes between this plantation and the next, through a gate on the left where the little stream in the valley sometimes flows over the track. The way continues on the track waymarked with blue arrows curving round until you are almost walking the opposite direction for a little way, but it gradually ascends bearing right and opens out, heading almost south up Calton Pastures.

7. Head straight up the slope just right of a shallow depression containing two gritstone troughs. You should see a finger post at the top at the right end of the plantation. Now turn right and follow the grassy track back to the beeches and pond.

Either retrace your steps direct down to Bakewell or continue along the ridge up a slight rise, past the site of an Iron Age fort to a gate and farm cross leading to Ball Cross and a minor road. Turn left down this a few yards then go left down the steep bridleway through the wood and across the golf course to the old station. Continue down Station Road into Bakewell.

8. If you’re taking the shorter route, retrace your steps from Chatsworth to

Edensor and in the village follow the road to the right-hand side of the church. Keep going up this road, which peters out into a rough track. Follow this as it climbs slowly uphill and turn left when you reach a road. Follow this until it starts to bend to the right, here take the bridleway down through the trees, across the golf course to the old station and down into Bakewell.

Castleton/Mam Tor Known to be one of the best ridge walks in the country, this Peak District walk, which starts in Castleton and is just over six miles in length, gives stunning views over Edale, Hope Valley and even the edge of Kinder Scout.

The Route: 1. From the car park turn left up the main road, then first right by the Castle Inn, then right again on a narrow lane just past the youth hostel. Beyond a bridge the lane curves up to the left then heads straight on to become a stony path beyond cottages. Follow this path until you reach a road. Cross the road and go through a gate (or over the stile) and 7follow the path that leads to the left, running parallel to the road. This joins a track which leads to Treak Cliff Cavern.

2. Take the steps beside the cavern and turn right to walk along the hillside - to arrive at Blue John Cavern. Cross the car park in front of the cavern entrance and

go through a gate to follow the path uphill to a farm, turning right at a signpost.

Follow the wall and go through a gate at the corner of the field, then straight on a cross the next field. Cross the road and go through a gate, then across the field to another road, through the gate opposite and up the hill. Go through another gate and up steps to the road.

3. Go through a gate on the right and follow the stepped path to the summit of Mam Tor. From the summit, as you look down towards Castleton, go down the obvious path to your left until you reach

Hollins Cross, the junction of several routes. Go straight on here towards the craggy top of Back Tor, crossing a stile and climbing the short steep slope to the summit. Continue along the path to the next high point. Lose Hill Pike, with excellent views all around.

4. Turn right after Spring Bank Farm along another track. Bear left at the junction but at the next one go straight on, over a stile.

After the next stile bear very slightly left over a field and join a stony lane, emerging soon into a surface lane, gradually curving left down into Castleton.

Have your say Derbyshire County Council has published ambitious plans for an east-west walking and cycling route for Chesterfield and local people are being asked for their views.The government has awarded the authority just over £1.6million to create a new route for cyclists and those on foot.

The route will go from the A619 junction with Holymoor Road, along Chatsworth Road and the existing Hipper Valley Trail, through Queen’s Park, and to the hospital by using Crow Lane and Wetlands Lane.

The plans for the route include improving existing sections by widening and resurfacing, to provide enough space for all users and allow for better social distancing.

Green entrepreneurs fund Companies in Chesterfield and Derbyshire with green aspirations can apply for a slice of a new £2million funding pot – which is set to be launched at an event delivered by East Midlands Chamber.

Derbyshire County Council will introduce its £2million Green Entrepreneurs Fund at an information session hosted by the Chamber on Thursday 17 March from 9-10am.

The fund, which was created in collaboration with the University of Derby as part of its Covid-19 economic strategy and climate change commitments, is intended to help SMEs to develop and invest in low-carbon energy and carbon reduction schemes alongside training.

In the summer of 1976,Volkswagen launched a distinctively sporty Golf onto the market: the GTI. At that time no one at Volkswagen had any idea that the Golf GTI would eventually become the world’s most successful compact sports car. But that is exactly what happened.

Now Volkswagen is marking the 45th birthday of this iconic car with an anniversary model: the Golf GTI Clubsport 45.

The Clubsport 45 is ready to take to the road with more individual customisation than ever before. The exterior boasts a striking black roof complete with black roof spoiler, in homage to the black-framed rear window of the first Golf GTI. The interior of the anniversary model also showcases classic GTI insignia.

With the new Golf GTI Clubsport 45, Volkswagen is adding a new chapter to the high-performance GTI versions released.

What price for power?

CUPRA has opened the order books for the latest variant of its iconic Leon hatchback with the launch of the 300PS 2.0 TSI powertrain.The brand’s flagship performance hatch is now available to order with prices starting from £35,660 RRP for the CUPRA Leon Hatch VZ2 TSI DSG-auto 300 and rising to £37,390 for VZ3 trim.

Available exclusively with the DSG-auto transmission, the latest iteration of the renowned 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine develops 300PS and 400Nm of torque.

The turbocharged, direct injection petrol engine propels CUPRA Leon from 062mph in just 5.7 seconds and is limited to a top speed of 155mph.

As well as an increase in power output over its predecessor, the new CUPRA Leon is also more efficient, returning up to 37.2mpg on the combined WLTP cycle and CO2 emissions from 171g/km.

The future has arrived The order books are now open for ŠKODA’s new Enyaq iV, the brand’s first purpose-built battery electric vehicle.

Based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electrification toolkit (MEB), the highly-awaited all-electric SUV is offered with two battery size options, a new range structure and a new finance offering: Lease&Care.

The new Enyaq iV introduces a new way for customers to perfectly tailor the car to their tastes and requirements.

Instead of selecting from traditional trim levels, customers choose the battery size they need, select an interior design and then personalise their vehicle from a comprehensive range of equipment packs and individual options.

From launch, the range consists of two variants; Enyaq iV 60 Nav and Enyaq iV 80 with 62kWh and 82kWh battery packs respectively. Five design selections are available; Loft, Lodge, Lounge, Suite and ecoSuite, all of which offer a different interior look and materials.

Prices start from £31,085.

Volvo recharges The future of Volvo Cars is electric, and the new Volvo C40 Recharge is the latest manifestation of the company’s commitment to a zero-emission future.

The C40 Recharge has all the benefits of an SUV but with a lower and sleeker design. It is based on the CMA vehicle platform and is the first Volvo model in history designed as pure electric only.

Already by 2025, it aims for 50 per cent of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids.

By 2030, it plans for every car it sells to be pure electric.

The propulsion consists of twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast charged to 80 per cent in about 40 minutes (expected). It offers an anticipated range of around 420km (261 miles), which is expected to improve over time via overthe-air software updates.
