BARNFIELD HOUSE AIMS TO ADD TO ITS HAUL OF AWARDS BY LANDING ONE OF THE REGION’S TOP TOURISM HONOURS.

Pride of Yorkshire arnfield House, Sheffield’s only four star gold award guest accommodation, has been named as a finalist in the guest accommodation category of the White Rose Awards.

The White Rose Awards, which are run by Welcome to Yorkshire, honour the very best of Yorkshire tourism, and Barnfield House, at Loxley, has fought off competition from around the region to be named as one of six finalists in the guest accommodation category.

Owners Helen and Michael Rogers are thrilled about their nomination, which is the latest in a string of awards and accolades that Barnfield House has achieved since the B&B opened in 2007.

Soon after it opened Barnfield House was awarded a four star silver rating by Visit England, which was followed by a breakfast award and finally the four star gold award, making it the only B&B in South Yorkshire to receive such a high accolade.

To be recognised by Welcome to Yorkshire means a lot to co-owner Helen Rogers. She said: “Both Michael and I are Yorkshire born and bred, we are incredibly passionate about Yorkshire and what the county has to offer visitors.”

Reaching this level has been a long process, starting with a written application and supporting evidence, explaining why Barnfield House was one of Yorkshire’s best guest accommodations. Helen and Michael worked tirelessly on the application, spending every spare moment on it when they weren’t busy with the B&B, and are now expecting a mystery guest as part of the judging process.

But the couple are no strangers to working hard to make Barnfield House a success.

When they bought the house ten years ago it had previously been used as a rest home and

contained 22 small rooms, which had lain empty for two years.

The house underwent a full refurbishment and today Barnfield House is home to six beautiful bedrooms, a bright dining room and an acre of beautiful grounds, all with panoramic views of Loxley Valley, Dam Flask, Strines Moor and surrounding farmland. Guests’ rooms are loosely themed around local folklore legend Robin of Loxley, or Robin Hood, as he is more famously known.

For guests staying at Barnfield House, the best of Yorkshire is on offer as the couple try to support as many local businesses as they can.

The meat used in the B&B’s award-winning breakfasts comes from John Crawshaw’s butchers, whilst the art on the walls was provided by Sheffield artist Mark Turner, and every year Barnfield House is the official artist accommodation for the Bradfield Music Festival. The guesthouse also has a recommendations book full of the best restaurants in the area, promoting Sheffield’s eateries and offering their customers the finest dining the region has to offer.

Helen and Michael will have to wait until November to find out if Barnfield House has been successful, when the winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony which has been likened to the Oscars of the Yorkshire tourism industry.

An air ambulance helped to save Daniel Draperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life after a motorbike accident

NOW UP AND RUNNING AT NORTHERN GENERAL HOSPITAL, IT OFFERS DIRECT ACCESS TO THE ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT. hanks to the generosity of local people and businesses, Sheffield Hospitals Charity has been able to fund a state-of-the-art helipad that will give critically ill patients quicker access to lifesaving medical treatment.

When patients with life-threatening conditions land by air ambulance at the Northern General Hospital (NGH) Sheffield, they are now just seconds away from the Accident and Emergency Department, where they can receive the urgent attention they need.

Following the launch of the Helipad Appeal in October 2014, hundreds of people from across Sheffield, South Yorkshire and further afield have worked hard to raise the funds required to help make the new helipad a reality.

After months of building work, the helipad is now in full operation, ready to serve a population of 1.8 million people covering South Yorkshire, parts of the Humber, Derbyshire and the East Midlands.

Patients who land at the NGH are now only a trolley push away from a consultantled specialist team with access to the best diagnostic and treatment facilities.

Dr Stuart Reid, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Lead for Major Trauma at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said: “As part of the team receiving patients in our resuscitation room, I know how vitally important the new helipad is. Time is a crucial factor in determining if a person lives or dies. The new helipad provides an industry leading facility for air ambulances to land easily and for our teams to transfer patients straight into the Emergency Department where we can start to treat them straight away. These precious minutes saved give us the best possible chance to save the life of the patient.”

Before the new helipad was built, air ambulance helicopters had to land on a helipad which was built more than 20 years ago, and because of its distance from the Emergency Department, it required a secondary transfer by land ambulance to reach the hospital. This took extra time and created additional complexity and risks for patients.

Twenty-five-year-old Daniel Draper from Dinnington knows only too well the importance of the air ambulance as they helped to save his life after a motorbike accident in March. Daniel was thrown from

his bike into woodland and suffered horrific injuries, which resulted in him having eight hours of surgery on arrival at hospital and having to be induced into a coma for nearly two weeks to give him the best chance of recovery.

Daniel said: “I’m extremely fortunate to be here today. I have been told it would have been extremely unlikely that I would have survived if I hadn’t been flown to the Northern General Hospital, due to the severity of my injuries and the amount of blood I had lost. Thankfully, I remember very little about what happened. I just know that I will be eternally grateful to all of the medical team who put me back together.

It’s fantastic that Sheffield Hospitals Charity have helped to build an even better helipad.

Sadly, there will be other people like me who need life-saving care, but now they have a higher chance of surviving as they can get treatment more quickly.”

Sheffield Hospitals Charity still has £55,000 left to raise to cover the final cost of £2million to build the new helipad.

David Reynolds, Director at Sheffield Hospitals Charity, said: “I’m overwhelmed by the level of support our appeal has received locally. I’d like to personally thank everyone who has helped build this amazing facility, they can all call themselves lifesavers. None of us know when tragedy could strike. But if it does, having access to this new landing site right next to the Emergency Department means patients will receive the best medical attention possible as quickly as possible.”

But Sheffield Hospitals Charity’s support doesn’t end there. The Haematology Service at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital treats people with blood cancers and other disorders, and thanks to an army of inspirational community fundraisers, Sheffield Hospitals Charity is able to fund significant and lasting improvements to the treatment of the department’s patients.

Young cancer patients have been made more comfortable with a new space for teenagers where they can sit and relax to watch films, use Wi-Fi, play computer games or have positive interactions with other cancer patients while undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

‘Ambulatory care’, also known as outpatient care, and an ambulatory care coordinator has also been made possible by the fundraising efforts of charity supporters.

their loved ones in two flats close to the hospital, which means they only have a short daily walk to receive their treatment.

Another vital piece of the care made possible by donations is a clinical psychologist. This post aids patients coming to terms with what is often a difficult diagnosis and helps manage their anxiety and fears throughout their treatment journey. The clinical psychologist also trains other staff to provide further emotional support to patients and helps them manage their own feelings whilst working in what is sometimes a challenging and upsetting hospital environment.

Sheffield Hospital Charity’s latest fundraising mission is to raise money to bring in researcher Georgia Stewart, to work on a ground-breaking new treatment that could cure myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Georgia, aged 23, from Woodseats, is a final year biomedical science student at Sheffield Hallam University.

Georgia said: “I’ve been lucky to work with the remarkable Sheffield Myeloma Research Team at the University of Sheffield during my degree, supervised by Dr Andrew Chantry, Dr Shelly Lawson and Dr Simon Tazzyman.

Whilst on placement I learned a great deal about myeloma and the devastating effects it has on patients and their families.

“The current treatments and therapies for myeloma only induce remission and are not a cure for the cancer. I was able to work on a new therapy that is promising. I’m optimistic that this therapy has clinical potential, and I would like to continue with this work in order to reach a point where I can trial it with myeloma patients.

“Sheffield Hospitals Charity funding can make this happen, but of course relies on further fundraising donations. Further funding would mean I could continue to develop this therapy which I wholeheartedly believe in, and continue to work with the Sheffield Myeloma Research Team. It could potentially extend the lives of those that might suffer from myeloma or completely cure the condition and that’s a goal all of us want for patients.”

Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.”

But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards.

“I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott.

“And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We

A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires.

Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.

Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals.

Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.”

quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.”

Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.”

Close shaves for charity at The Sportsman BRAVE REGULARS LOSE THEIR HAIR TO RAISE THOUSANDS FOR THE CHILDREN’S. t may have been late August, but residents of Wadsley had more than the bank holiday weekend on their minds when they turned out in force to support the annual Sportsman Inn fundraiser.

Cheered on by a throng of family, friends and punters, the brimming beer garden proved the perfect spot to watch as three fearless fundraisers prepared to take on the infamous ‘Brave to Shave’ challenge.

With local punk pop group Seconds To Go playing in the background, and the cheers and applause of well-wishers ringing in their ears, Ian Wilson, Terry and Robert Jones took turns having their locks lopped and legs waxed - all in aid of The Children’s Hospital Charity (TCHC), Sheffield.

The trio underwent the transformation in aid of the TCHC Cancer Ward, sacrificing their body and shoulder-length hair for a grade one all over - and helped raise at least £3,000 for the charity in the process.

Going that bit further to raise as much money as he could, Terry went all out and opted for a full beard and chest shave, while Ian and Robert braved a full leg wax, performed by the team Hair Flair - though individual charity supporters volunteered to wax off some hair in return for donations.

As well as the shave, Kim and Rob, who run the Sportsman Inn, organised a fundraising afternoon complete with barbecue, cake stalls, bouncy castle, tombola, a raffle, and even a charity auction of prized

“The number of people who helped us out was amazing.” said Kim. “Everyone in the pub got behind us. They were cheering and clapping and the atmosphere was incredible. Everybody who donated something had their own story to tell about how cancer has affected them and we’d like to pay tribute to the fantastic support offered by the businesses and residents of Wadsley.”

The fundraisers have collected around £1,177 worth of sponsorship money so far, with more pledges still being counted.

Brave to Shave is a campaign run by Macmillan which encourages people to take the plunge and chop off their locks in order to raise money that will go towards supporting people suffering with cancer. Record breaker

RATHER THAN DWELLING ON WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN, RUNNER-TURNED-CYCLIST KEITH AINSWORTH IS MAKING HUGE STRIDES ON THE TIME TRIAL CIRCUIT. NEXT STOP, AUSTRALIA. MOLLY McGREEVY REPORTS.

’ll never admit to being a cyclist, I’m a runner on a bike.”

A runner on a bike who has broken multiple records, beaten competitors half his age and has excelled in regional and national races, all within five years of hitting the pedals.

And for his next challenge, 53-year-old Keith Ainsworth will be travelling to Perth, Australia to compete against some of the world’s best amateur and professional cyclists at the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.

But, as he’s so keen to point out, Keith is not a cyclist. He started off as a runner, with an obvious talent from a young age he spent his teens achieving on the track but his passion took a back seat as he got older.

“My main hobby was going out really, that was my downfall. I grew up with that culture of going out a lot. And I wasn’t a follower, I was a protagonist, all weekend benders, just ridiculous,” he says.

“I’ve got a natural competitive streak but I messed up as a kid, I had such natural ability and I knew that from 11 years old but I packed it up at 16. Then I went to uni and was just a party animal for three years.”

Looking back, Keith thinks that if he had been a talented youngster today, things might have been different: “It was a different era, I think now I would have been picked up and put into a training camp and really nurtured, but I grew up in Blackpool and there was nothing but your local club.

“I always regret not knowing where I could have gone with my running.”

Keith had always cycled on a weekend, taking his mountain bike out for leisure rides: “I used to call it office fitness,” says Keith.

Leisure rides soon turned to charity rides, and Keith raised nearly £20,000 for Macmillan taking part in rides through Ecuador and across South America. He completed the races on his mountain bike, replacing his usual tyres with smooth ones for road sections.

“I had no interest in road bikes at all,” says Keith, “guys wearing lycra and shaving their legs. We used to have names for them, I thought why share the roads with cars.”

But 53-year-old Keith’s opinion began to change when he saw other men his age, many of them ex-runners, taking to the pedals.

“One of my inspirations was seeing guys of a similar age doing amazing things, and because of my strong running background I used to think that I could be doing that too, in the end I was beating them.”

For Keith, it was a ride out to the Peak District that ignited his passion for pedals: “We just did a short ride to Monsal Head, went to a café, had coffee and cake, then rode back. I came home and told my wife it was one of the best things I’ve ever done.”

club, which has now been dissolved.

Keith quickly proved his talent, and was consistently finishing in the top ten of local road races, then he started winning, and it was suggested he try time trail races.

“They call it the race of truth,” says Keith, “you just go as hard as you can for set distances.”

Keith definitely went hard, he won three national age-related silver podium finishes, completed a ten-mile time trial in 20:01 and the 25-mile race in 52:41 and was awarded the Sheffrec most improved rider award.

He was quickly picked up by Team Swift, a UK time trial team, and trained with a top coach for six weeks before injuring his achilles. The injury, alongside a separation from his wife and his children leaving home for university, led to Keith’s 2014 season ending on a low, and he spent the next year away from cycling.

“For most of 2015 I thought I was never going to get on a bike again, I just went and watched them. I just wanted to ride a bike but I couldn’t even walk the dogs. I used to get these pains, I didn’t know what to do.”

Not to be beaten, Keith saw some of the region’s best doctors, and they diagnosed the root of his injuries as mental rather than physical. Despite the pain, Keith picked up

training again, and looked abroad for a fresh start.

“On 2 January I was out in Mallorca, it is the place to go to for cycling, I’ve bought an apartment there now,” says Keith.

“I had the most amazing two months and I wanted a piece of it. It shows you can get up, be proactive and do something when you’re down in the dumps, it can change your life.”

Returning to the UK strong and ready to compete Keith has taken the 2016 season by storm. After overcoming a virus in the spring he has broken even more records, completing a ten-mile time trial race in 19:43, beating a long-standing Sheffrec record.

At the UCI World UK trials he was fastest in the road race and third in the time trials for his age group, qualifying him for the championships in Perth.

But Keith is taking it all in his stride: “This is my second chance of sorts, I don’t want to pack it in again. I’m just getting stronger all the time.

I just want to do as well as I can, I want to do better than average, I never ever thought I’d be doing this. At 50 I was still at the pub all the time, if someone said to me that in five years I’d be breaking records I wouldn’t have believed them.”

Not a bad success story… for a runner.

Family Light the Night to support local hospital after cancer scares A family from Sheffield are joining a sponsored walk to raise money and awareness for their local cancer hospital.

The Bradwell family will join Light the Night in Ecclesall Woods on 1 October to support Weston Park Cancer Charity after mum of three, Claire, battled cervical cancer in 2009.

Claire Bradwell, along with her partner Daniel Lilleker, dad Stephen, mum Jill and three children David, Michael and Daisy, have signed up to Light the Night to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital.

Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people.

With a brand new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme, a ‘golden ticket’ fundraising initiative and themed surprises along the 4.5K route, the cancer charity hopes families, friends and colleagues will sign up to Light the Night and help them shine bright on the night.

Charity fundraising manager, Sarah Cross said: "Last year, the event raised an impressive £36,000 which enabled the cancer charity to fund life-saving research projects, groundbreaking treatments and enhanced support services for over 18,000 people living with cancer."

"This year, we hope that more families will join us on the evening to raise sponsorship and enjoy the new theme, with lots of surprises along the route!"

Vine Hotels add Kenwood Hall to their portfolio Vine Hotels has acquired Kenwood Hall Hotel in Sheffield’s S7. This hotel adds to the Sheffield Company’s portfolio, whose chairman is Greg Dyke, along with other owners Garin Davies and Andrew Rouse.

The hotel has been purchased from the Principal Hayley group and was formerly the Sheffield Marriott. This multi-million pound investment will see the hotel returned to its former glory and refurbishments works have already begun at the hotel.

Improvements will be made to bedrooms and public areas as well as re-opening the currently closed Spa Treatment Rooms.

Vine Hotels has a history of operating within the Sheffield area and is excited to be working alongside local businesses and suppliers to restore this hotel to its position as one of the city’s leading hotels.

STANNINGTON PLAYERS ARE STARS OF CHARITY PARTNERSHIP The curtain is rising on a new partnership between Stannington Players and St Luke’s Hospice.

The Sheffield amateur theatre company has chosen the city’s only hospice as its charity partner of the year and is aiming to raise £1,000.

Donations for refreshments at the group’s next production, cricketing comedy Outside Edge – on stage at the Lomas Hall in Stannington from 8 to 10 September – will go to St Luke’s.

And there will be further fundraising at the group’s annual pantomime from 8 to 10 December, when all profits from the sale of Our Cow Molly ice cream will go direct to the hospice.

“We are delighted that Stannington Players have chosen to support us in this way,” said St Luke’s community fundraising assistant Noni Bryson.

“This is an extremely popular theatre company and we are sure their audiences will be happy to join in their fundraising efforts.”

Poppy Memorial Trail returns to Bradfield

S6 EVENTS

After the success of the Poppy Memorial Trail Project and the poppy illumination at St Nicholas’ Church last year to honour those lost in World Wars One and Two, organisers are returning with a number of events for 2016.

WW1 Heritage group Dungworth & Bradfield and the Poppy Memorial Trail team have been asked to illuminate St Nicholas’ Church with floating poppies one last time for The Battle of The Somme Commemoration and the celebration of Red White and Blue Day on Friday 14 October.

There are a number of war graves in the church yard at St Nicholas’ Church in High Bradfield and the Commemoration will allow people to be remembered and lost lives celebrated.

The team are involving local schools including Bradfield Dungworth School and Stocksbridge Junior School, both of which played a major part in the events last year.

A programme for the event is now on sale in local shops including The Royal Hotel, The Plough Inn, The Old Horns Inn, the Bradfield Brewery shop and Stannington Library for 50p and all money raised will go to British Legion, Help 4 Heroes and St Nicholas' Church.

The Castellucio di Norcia cycle route

When in Umbria...

FIONA BARBER DISCOVERS THAT THE BEST WAY TO SEE THE COLOURFUL ITALIAN COUNTRYSIDE IS ON TWO WHEELS. WITH PLENTY OF GOOD FOOD AND WINE, NATURALLY. ust a few cautious pushes of the pedals and the motor whirred into action. The bike surged forward and I whizzed past alfresco diners devouring cones of gelato.

This was a day of two firsts: my first time in Italy and my debut on an electric bike. In a tour-guided group, led by ecobike, we weaved through the narrow streets of Umbria’s historic capital, Perugia. Fooddrunk on pasta, cheese and bread, we visited the ancient Porta Marzia gates of the town and the stunning San Pietro’s church.

Cruising around on an ebike is ideal for urban cycling, but to uncover the true character of this region and explore its lush and varied landscape, with its beautifully preserved small towns and hilltop villages, a little more effort is required.

Umbria is a wonderfully diverse district and, whether you’re a seasoned cyclist,

novice, or on a family adventure, there’s a route to suit. Experienced riders may dare to challenge the long alpine slopes, while others can enjoy the many flatter routes.

The gentle gradients of the Spoleto to Norcia disused railway line, which stretches 56km, offer riders of all abilities the chance to discover some of Umbria’s greenest countryside. This extensive gravel trail weaves through towering trees and skirts several now-empty village stations. It journeys through cool ink-black tunnels – head torches are a must – and gives way to bridges and viaducts offering picture-perfect panoramic views.

We cycled the first 20km stretch and stopped at Zafferano E Dintorni in Castel San Felice to refuel on delicious homemade artichoke and wild hops risotto. This peaceful farmhouse bed and breakfast boasts idyllic views over the hills and mountains of @SixerRMC

Valnerina, making it an ideal base from which to explore the emerald-green surroundings.

After a pit stop in Castelluccio di Norcia to sample the local ricotta and admire the spectacular Piano Grande (great plains) – where wild flowers bloom from yellow to red and violet to white between May and July – we drove to hotel Le Dimore di San Crispino, located just a few kilometres from the hill-top town of Assisi.

This hotel, restaurant, and spa, tucked away at the end of a winding country road, covers ten hectares comprising vineyards, olive groves and one of the most beautiful private gardens in Umbria. We relaxed on the tranquil veranda with chilled prosecco, and breathed in the sweet lavender air. If relaxation is top of your list, this venue is a must.

without sampling the local wines. While neighbouring Tuscany is home to some of the world’s most notable regions, Umbria offers an array of grape varieties, wine styles and something special for every palate.

Where better to sample a taste than with a trip to a local winery?

We headed south to Montefalco – famous for Sagrantino wine – past a flurry of brightlemon sunflower meadows, fruit-filled olive groves and uniform vineyards, before arriving at Le Cimate.

Here, owner Paolo Bartoloni produces 90,000 bottles per year, with a focus on quality rather than quantity. He exports to the USA, Belgium, Austria, Germany and many other corners of the globe. On the menu are three reds, one rosé, two whites and one red dessert wine. The Montefalco Sagrantino is Umbria’s most popular and distinctive red wine. Garnet-red with distinct blackberry flavours, balanced tannins and acidity, this complex wine is a perfect accompaniment to meats and mature cheeses.

As it happens, Le Cimate also produce their own ham, salami, and olive oil, all equally as delicious as the wine. For €15pp groups can enjoy a feast of meats, cheeses and bread, plus three wines to taste, or for €35 indulge in a three-course lunch plus wine. Visit www.lecimate.it for more info.

After the winery I reflected on my time in Umbria. If there’s one thing I can be sure of from this whistle-stop tour it’s this: to soak up the rivers, rolling hills and olive groves, the piazzas, winding streets and hamlets, there’s no better way to do so than on two wheels.

And another thing. Three days of Italian cycling fuelled by cured meat, cheese and wine is enough to make you feel – almost – like a pro. Head ducked, elbows tucked, I leaned defiantly into the decline. Chris Froome eat your heart out.

I knew I’d arrived at that point when other parents at the school tried to interest me in a group camping weekend. Now if wet canvas, cooking on a Bunsen burner and waking in the early hours for torchlit treks across a landscape reminiscent of Passchendaele are your kind of thing, go ahead. I spoke for myself.

essentially a great way to spend a week’s winter break and refined it, to the nth degree.

The business brains behind Villa Rose chose their location carefully. The beautiful little Haut Savoie town of Samoens has a number of things going for it. For a start, it’s a mere one hour from Geneva airport, where

a private transfer awaits.

And because it is not as well-known as the mass tourism resorts like Val d’Isere, there is a pleasing absence of the lads-on-tour apres-ski brigade.

Lesser-known it may be, but its lift system links with nearby Flaine to provide a huge range of excellent skiing within clear sight of Mont Blanc. And the town itself is still unspoiled, right down to the 550-year old lime tree that still grows in the main square.

But where Samoens really scores is the fact that it’s ideal for those who’ve never skied before. It is without doubt one of the best beginners resorts in Europe.

Rather than confining new skiers and boarders to the lower slopes, which are always the first to wear thin during the thaw, Samoens has a main cable car which takes them right to the heart of the piste network.

And the cable car takes newcomers and experts alike back down at the end of the day.

Waiting for you will be one of Villa Rose’s drivers, who will shuttle guests and their equipment back to the chalet.

It’s then time to make your way to the best restaurant in town. No need to bother venturing out in the cold to find it. This particular haven of culinary excellence is a few steps from your room door.

Alpine apple and Champagne rarebit

TRY THIS AT HOME:

Serves 4 4 slices wholegrain bakers’ bread 2 apples, skinned, cored and finely sliced 2 large banana shallots, finely chopped 50g grated Emmental 50g grated Gruyere Half tablespoon English mustard 100ml Champagne (or Prosecco if you must) 2.5 tablespoons plain flour Pinch salt and two turns black pepper Half a round Reblochon cheese to melt on top.

1. Toast the bread on one side. Combine all ingredients except Reblochon thoroughly in a bowl until you have a loose paste.

2. Butter the untoasted side of the bread and top generously with the mixture. Place slices of Reblochon over each slice.

3. Place in an oven preheated to 210c until golden on top.

Place the slices in warm bowls and top with a poached egg.

This is the domain of Villa Rose’s own chef Dan Bearcroft, who goes to great lengths to ensure diners are well lookedafter.

Before he wields so much as a single spatula, Dan consults guests in advance to establish their particular food requirements or preferences, from which he builds superb four-course menus.

The challenge presented by my own family would have stopped Escoffier in his tracks. Four vegetarians, three of whom nevertheless eat seafood. One of the trio does not like spicy food, and two don’t care much for mushrooms.

Sanguine professional that he is, Dan didn’t bat an eyelid at such a complex brief. “I’ve dealt with harder ones in the past,” came the reply.

So by the time we headed, champagne in hand, up to the dining room with its open-plan kitchen, he had prepared a menu that could stand comparison with the finest of fine dining restaurants.

Breakfast is founded on the same principles. After fruit, pastries, delicious

French bread and freshly-squeezed orange juice, your hot course is cooked to order.

Typically, this might be a choice of eggs Benedict with a lemon hollandaise, crepes, smoked salmon and scrambled egg, or Dan’s own speciality, an apple and Champagne rarebit, the recipe for which he kindly gave us.

When it comes to the arduous business of actually skiing, every angle is covered. For instance, Villa Rose staff arrange hire of equipment, which is then delivered to the boot room on the first morning. There’s an expert on hand to ensure correct fittings.

All in all, it’s a far cry from ski holidays of yore, with their three hour coach transfers along dizzying mountain roads, cupboardsized accommodation and chalet girls who were all called Annabelle.

So how was the skiing? Therein lies a tale.

Call it the vain pursuit of lost youth if you like, but we decided to hit the piste for the first time in ten years – as snowboarders.
