For the reader, the listener, and the curious mind, Off the Shelf is not just a series of events, it’s a city-wide narrative, woven through chance encounters in café queues, evening debates at candlelit venues, and quiet page.

ost of us are familiar with the traditional wedding – we all grew up with the image of what a wedding should look like. A typical ceremony begins with beautiful music playing, the bridesmaids and groomsmen walking down the aisle in pairs. Flower Girls and Page Boys, looking smart and pretty, walk sweetly down the aisle, throwing rose petals, surrounded by sounds of “oooo” and “ahhhh”, as the wedding guests’ hearts melt. The tone of the wedding is set, with a unique, precious milestone moment lying ahead.

The maid of honour enters, then comes the bride, making her grand entrance in a train trailing behind. She is accompanied member, and walks towards the groom with a delicate smile.

After the opening remarks comes the exchange of vows. The couple express their unconditional love and commitment each other, sharing their hopes and promises, often bringing tears of joy.

Rings are exchanged, after which you married: “I now pronounce you husband and wife”.

A party at the wedding’s reception commences, with dancing, drinking, the cutting of the cake newlywed, and a bouquet toss.

vs non-traditional TRADITIONAL

How do they compare?

In 2025, the traditional wedding is becoming less popular. Perhaps it is not surprising that untraditional weddings are on the rise, what with the relentless rise of costs, rapid development of technology and social media and increased awareness of our impact on the environment, all in the past decade. Younger generations like norms for communication, consumerism, purpose and the workplace across the western world.

Christopher James Hall is an awardwinning photographer, mentor and founder of the Christopher James Hall Foundation. He describes the shift which has taken place: “Weddings have never been cheap. But in the last ten years, costs have skyrocketed. Back in 2015, the average wedding budget was already a hefty sum, but it was still within reach for many couples.

demand for personalised experiences, and the rising cost of venues and suppliers mean that weddings are more expensive than ever. Couples today are…getting creative with their budgets—hence the rise of micro-weddings.”

friendly celebrations have become a practical alternative to breaking the bank.”

that in 2022, marriages with religious ceremonies were at just 17 per cent; starkly different from the late 1970s, where they made up 50 per cent of all marriages. Traditional ceremonies took place in your local church, with the reception in a grand hotel or venue made

With the rise of civil ceremonies, possibilities for couples became endless, leading to where we are now: weddings can take place pretty much anywhere, with the ceremony and reception commonly being in the same venue. There are no bounds when it comes to a nontraditional wedding in 2025.

It has even become more common for bridesmaids to be allowed to choose their

colour but completely different styles, or whatever they are most comfortable in. If you really want to go crazy, one might be in pyjamas, another in a swimming costume, another dressed in full glam and the remaining bridesmaid wearing sports gear. This way, the wedding becomes extremely unique, with each guest’s character being brought to light.

Perhaps you don’t get the hype of having a wedding, so you decide to elongate your honeymoon instead, or get married under wraps in the middle of nowhere. You could serve pizza and tiramisu at your reception.

he history of Stannington can be traced back to Roman times. You don’t have to go that far back to recognise last month’s Do You Remember? images.

The main picture was of Stannington Methodist Chapel, which opened in 1879 after the original building of 1822 was demolished. The chapel was rededicated in October 2004 after being closed for 20 years.

The smaller picture showed workmen at Drabble’s Brickworks, Brookside, c. 1915. The bricks on the left-hand barrow were called ‘runners’ and were used were used for pouring molten steel into the moulds.

This month, we feature a couple of familiar public houses. Can you recognise from these dated pictures?

The Dakota Deluxe has brought a touch of luxury to Newcastle’s Quayside, writes Richard Abbey.

I like to think I’m past all those types puzzled looks.

But while this North East gem might often be described as the ultimate party city, there’s much more to Newcastle than drinking, dancing and doner kebabs in the Bigg Market.

The city has culture in abundance; from the castle and cathedral to a wealth of galleries and museums. Shopping offers a good mix of independent boutiques and high street names, and of course there’s the Metro Centre not too far away. Newcastle’s Metro network also means it’s really easy to reach all parts of the city and surrounding areas, including coastal spots such as Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. The former is well worth a visit and has its own castle and priory to explore as well as gorgeous sandy beaches and a buntingstrewn high street.

We arrived in Newcastle on a sunny

afternoon, passing the Angel of the North after leaving the A1 and travelling across the Tyne Bridge to reach our destination for the

It’s a curious building, U-shaped with a huge forecourt out front which gives it a sense of grandeur. Chatting to the very helpful reception team, I was told it used to the deluxe treatment.

You’d never know.

The quiet interior, all dark and mysterious, feels luxurious from the moment you step through the door. This was echoed in our room, a Classic King which had a stunning archway window with views over the River Tyne and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

It was a good size, with a huge king-size bed dominating the space as well as two armchairs and table, which sat under the archway. The bathroom had both a bath and walk-in shower as well as toiletries from Molton Brown. Tea and coffee facilities also included an espresso machine, as well as fresh milk and drinks in the fridge. The had all the familiar streaming services as as standard.

Thirst quenched, we headed back to the hotel to change for dinner after making a reservation in its restaurant, The Grill.

We started with some tempura padron peppers (£8) before tucking into a king scallop (£18), which was presented beautifully with pork cheek and apple, and chicken ravioli (£13) which came with a carbonara-esque sauce of pancetta, parmesan and egg yolk.

For the main event I tucked into a perfectly-cooked medium-rare 340g New York Strip steak (£75) whilst my wife opted for the 350g Secreto Ibérico pork steak

(£36). We added sides of chunky chips and a rocket and parmesan salad (both £6) as well as some tenderstem broccoli (£7.50), which was served with sesame and soy.

The quality of everything we ate was superb, the steak melt-in-the-mouth and we really loved the dining space, which featured a mix of booths, banquettes and regular tables, all very intimate and indulgent.

Crafting emotionTHROUGH FORM

Inside the world of Scott Allan. By Kieron Williams.

cott Allan Limited is a studio where design doesn’t just meet function, it tells a story. Founded by designer Scott Allan, the brand is known for creating contemporary homeware pieces that blend natural materials with architectural forms, all made with integrity and purpose.

From a young age, Allan was fascinated by how things worked and why they looked the way they did. What began as a childhood obsession with dismantling toys evolved into a deeper fascination with form and engineering, eventually leading him to study Transport Design at Coventry University. But it was a teacher – and a collection of Alessi homeware –that introduced him to design’s emotional resonance.

“At that point, I realised the ability of design to express emotion,” he recalls.

After years working in a consultancy on large-scale design projects, Allan found himself yearning for more creative autonomy.

“I longed for the ability to take control of the design process, from conception of an

The result was the launch of Scott Allan Limited, a brand that now channels his inquisitive nature into tactile, minimalist pieces that invite use and spark conversation.

Allan’s design process is anything but linear. Ideas emerge from everyday observations – a curious texture here, a small problem waiting to be solved there. Several concepts develop in parallel until one naturally takes precedence.

“Over time, one will tend to take prominence, which will then be worked up into a manufacturable object,” he explains.

Each piece is a subtle dance between traditional techniques and modern technologies, united by a commitment to product innovation and understated elegance.

The studio’s location plays no small part in shaping this aesthetic.

“This unique juxtaposition of the wildness of the Peaks and the grit of

approach,” Allan says.

A love of contrasts is woven into his work, from material pairings to form. Take his Earthenware vessel, for instance: an angular, architectural silhouette softened by a hand-hammered pewter liner, each with its own unique undulations. It’s an object that embodies both precision and imperfection.

Bringing these pieces to life hasn’t been without challenges. Sourcing materials and forging partnerships with British manufacturers required tenacity and no small amount of trial and error.

“It wasn’t unusual to go through several desperately needed,” Allan says.

But perseverance, he adds, has been the most valuable lesson of all.

While many designers chase trends, Allan deliberately resists them.

“Good design will stand the test of time,” he says.

His focus instead lies in craftsmanship, sustainability, and emotional connection. Materials are chosen with care and often tell their own story., whether it’s Blackwood, celebrated for its rich natural colour, or earthenware selected for its warmth over

more polished alternatives.

Sustainability isn’t a slogan here; it’s a principle. By designing timeless, durable objects and steering clear of fast-changing aesthetics, Allan encourages a slower, more meaningful consumer culture.

“Careful consideration is always given to how a material is sourced and what may become of it at the end of its usable life.”

Looking ahead, Allan hopes to expand his range, though the reality of being entirely self-funded means every new product is a calculated investment. One piece he’s excited to launch is a contemporary pewter jar, an effort to reimagine a traditional material and present it in a way that feels fresh and relevant.

Ultimately, Scott Allan’s goal is simple but profound: to create beautiful, functional objects that quietly elevate the spaces they inhabit.

“I hope people will have a sense of enjoyment from being able to use the pieces and appreciate their tactile quality,” he says. “Having nice objects in your home does make a useful talking point for any visitors.”
