that both my parents were keen gardeners, hooked!

One of my earliest memories is being a cutting with, and to see new roots and shoots was a magical thing, and there was something about being able to make new life grabbed my imagination.

When did you decide that this could become your career?

At the same time as being passionate about gardening from a young age, I was equally interested in nature and natural history,

Matthew Rhodes goes back to school... again.

ith the long Easter bank holiday weekend upon us, I decided to start it early on the Wednesday afternoon having managed to skive off work at lunchtime to meet a friend for a quick round of golf and then a night out.

The friend in question was like a kid in a sweet shop with the anticipation of good food and debauchery ahead of us. As a currency trader of 30 years in the city and now working remotely from the sleepy village of Fulwood, he is no stranger to a few drinks on a school night.

I had originally planned to drive, but on the second tee the wily silver fox demanded that we organise taxis, and we headed to the

We ordered two perfectly poured pints of Guinness which we drank whilst my raconteur friend began to regale me with stories from The Square Mile told in his thoroughly engaging Southend twang. If only his golf was as good as his stories! In need of some sustenance we headed into a lovely well-lit upstairs dining room and local supervisor Georgia told us about the history of the building which used to be a school with six children per class and

a dinner time bell that was a local farmer using a sheep whistle!

It is now a beautifully renovated restaurant by night, which also serves breakfast, lunch and a famous Sunday roast (£17 for a main course) – be sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment on Sundays.

I chose Whitby Crabcake to start, followed by Ribeye Steak, served with tomato, mushrooms and chips. City Boy went for Gambas al Ajillo and Beef Shin Rigatoni and we shared a cracking bottle of Chilean Pinot Noir (£32). The crabcake was slightly dry, but the fantastic homemade tartar sauce compensated. His Gambas was the better choice, with plenty of juicy big prawns balanced beautifully with the smoky garlic oil.

My steak was cooked perfectly, and

I cheekily requested Béarnaise and Peppercorn sauces, one for the chips and one for the steak!! An excellent suggestion from my man whose skilful ordering in restaurants was honed during his years spent pillaging a large expenses account in London.

For dessert I was pleased they had my favourite Tiramisu, which was indulgent yet light.

Just as expected he ordered Espresso Martinis and a chocolate brownie with crushed Oreos and vanilla ice cream. He was clearly off his long run tonight and I was enjoying his story-telling so was happy for the night to go on longer. We rounded the evening off with a “Godfather” (double Amaretto and Whisky FYI), whilst we waited for the taxi home.

I now realise why he moved away from London as I don’t think he would still be alive if this was a regular occurrence! The food at the Assembly Bar was fantastic and the service its equal. I will be back again, next time for a less boozy visit with my family involving a nice walk round

sure my family will entertain me half as much!

Exciting EXPANSION

avid Inman Opticians has recently grown, welcoming patients from Boyden-Hare Opticians in Fulwood and Bents Green. This expansion

our cutting-edge technology and worldclass eye care.

A Commitment to Excellence

James Allen, Optometrist and Director, explains: “We wanted to ensure all BoydenHare patients had the opportunity to experience the highest standard of eye care at David Inman Opticians. Our advanced technology allows us to detect eye diseases earlier and provide the most accurate prescriptions for glasses.”

Following the retirement of Andrew Boyden-Hare, James and his business partner, Chris Rzepinski (Dispensing Optician, Ecclesall Road), acquired the Fulwood and Bents Green practices. Over the past year, many patients naturally transitioned to David Inman Opticians in Broomhill and Ecclesall and were impressed by the exceptional level of care. To provide continuity and the best possible service, a

full merger was the logical next step.

All patient records from Boyden-Hare Opticians have been safely and securely transferred to David Inman Opticians so patients will be recalled to one of the David Inman sites when due their recall.

State-of-the-Art Technology –A First for South Yorkshire

To enhance patient experience, both David Inman practices have expanded their clinic availability and invested in even more cutting-edge equipment. From early April, all eye examinations will include a DNEye® 3 scan—a revolutionary biometric eye scan that creates a precise model of the eye.

James adds: “We will be the only opticians in South Yorkshire offering the DNEye® 3 scan. This technology allows us to tailor lenses using B.I.G. Exact™ by Rodenstock, which accounts for each person’s unique eye measurements. The result? Unparalleled clarity and comfort in every pair of glasses.”

Patients will soon have the chance to see this technology in action in-store, with further details shared on our social media channels.

To celebrate the launch of the DNEye® 3 scanner we will be giving away a free pair of B.I.G. Exact™ by Rodenstock lenses up to the value of £500 with a free frame up to the value of £200 included. All you need

Choosing the JEWELLERY for you

Over the years, our advice on how to choose a white precious metal has altered as prices have fluctuated, and with gold at an alltime high, platinum lower, and palladium back in the picture, it is time to refresh our information again! Initially, let’s take a look at the price of a popular gents’ wedding band style across various white metals. (Prices compared 28/03/2024)

9ct white gold: £700

18ct white gold: £1730

Palladium 500: £500

Palladium 950: £710

Platinum 950: £1200

Immediately striking is the expense of 18ct white gold in comparison to platinum!

So, let’s start with white gold; an alloy formed by adding other metals to gold. Since gold begins life as a yellow metal, materials with a whiter colour are added, creating a cream to pale yellow hue, that is rhodium plated to achieve the popular bright white finish.

The metals used in the alloy vary, but in 9ct a high percentage of silver tends to be added, while in 18ct much of the alloyed material may be palladium.

Although it contains less gold, 9ct tends to be more yellow, because silver is less successful at bleaching the colour. This may mean that 9ct white gold rings require replating more regularly. Silver is also a soft metal, making 9ct white gold soft too.

In contrast, 18ct white gold is often whiter, especially in alloys with a high palladium content, which also creates a hardier material, better suited to regular wear.

Palladium was initially promoted as a more affordable alternative to platinum that was naturally white, and harder wearing than white gold. When we updated our advice in early 2020, palladium had increased in price hugely but over the past year it has dropped significantly. Originally, a 95% (950) palladium alloy was used as standard, although a 50% (500) alloy is available too, which is a little darker in colour but otherwise broadly similar.

Platinum was historically regarded as the

preferred but more expensive white metal option. With continued increases in the price of gold however, it is now more affordable than 18ct white gold. It is naturally white, hard wearing, dense, strong and ductile, making it ideal for producing delicate designs and strong settings. Those who prefer white metals have a vast array of options to choose from, which can be confusing, although it also allows your jewellery to be tailored to your preferences! If you would like to learn more about your white metal options, view worn samples to better understand the variation in appearances, or try on a range of styles, you can visit our showroom where our jewellers will be delighted to help you.

The trend for improving our homes rather than moving has grown massively in recent years. Many of us crave extra space but not every property is blessed with having the room to extend. But if you don’t have the luxury of being able to extend outwards, there’s always the option of going upwards.

Loft conversions are suitable for most properties and are a great way to add functional space and are renowned for

p boosting property values.

W Wooodworkers Ltd specialise in dormer, hip to gable, pitched roofs and trussed roofs with a strong focus on bespoke loft conversion solutions.
