Almost all pearls in the modern marketplace are cultured pearls, produced using a combination of natural processes and human intervention.
Via a delicate surgical procedure, pearl farmers insert an irritant, usually a small piece of tissue taken from another oyster, into the mantle of the one they hope to grow a pearl in. Once the procedure is complete, the oyster is placed
back into the water, secured to a frame, and the farmer must wait for several months (or sometimes years), to discover if a pearl has successfully grown, as the oyster deposits layers of nacre over the tissue to soothe the irritation.
A similar procedure is followed for producing pearls in freshwater mussels too, only these may produce multiple pearls at the same time, while the saltwater oyster can form only one. This is a

Your choice of pearl may come down to the size or colour you prefer. Saltwater pearls are available in a greater range of sizes, although in the most popular 5.0-8.0mm sizes, both varieties are available. These are usually seen in the

All entrants will be invited to join us for a MasterChefstyle cooking competition at a date to be arranged later this year. Last year we hosted the competition at renowned catering department and were wowed by some virtuoso cooking.
The results will be announced at the 2025 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards at The OEC on Monday 27 October.
We’ll be contacting restaurants across the region in the next few months, reminding head chefs and restaurateurs to get involved.

Range-topper
Škoda Auto is launching the vRS range-topper six months after the world premiere of the new Škoda Elroq, which competes in the popular electric compact SUV segment.
The latest member of the vRS family has two motors generating a total system output of 340 PS (250 kW) and is equipped with all-wheel drive.
The Elroq vRS comes with an electric range of more than comprehensive standard equipment. It is also the fastest accelerating car in Škoda’s current model portfolio, sprinting from 0 to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds.

New look and new features
The XC60’s status as Volvo Cars’ topselling model globally is strengthened with a series of updates in a wide-ranging refresh programme for 2025. The updated mid-size SUV is marked out by sharp new exterior styling with a new-look grille,
