Last month’s photograph showed The Cinema House and The Arundel Public House, Ecclesfield. Built in 1920 and demolished 50 years later, it was flanked by two shops including a sweet shop for cinema-goers.

hat a difference a family holiday can make. But before we go off to sun ourselves, we want to make sure our pets are in good hands.

The team at Centre Barks @Moscar, The Pet Holiday Village, are just as determined to give your cats and dogs a relaxing break too.

John Walsh has owned the kennels since 1999, and was joined by wife Jemma some years later. They owned the ‘Moscar Kennels’ up until 2011, but left the business for six years to concentrate on their family. Back with even more enthusiasm and plenty of improvements to the facilities, they decided it was the perfect time to relaunch the business under its new name – Centre Barks@Moscar Ltd. Both the cattery and kennels have been fully refurbished since the start of 2018. The cattery has been refurbished with PVC doors and windows allowing for a bright and airy environment, where felines have moorland views. Each pen has three levels for cats to climb, a private bedroom area and undershelf

heating to keep them warm and windows in each for ventilation. Double and triple pens are available for cats from the same home staying together.

The kennels have a holiday theme, with each door painted in a bright colour to make them look like rows of beach huts. These pens have hatches into outside areas, giving dogs the space to stretch their legs and to get some fresh air. The downstairs kennels have been specially designed with UPVC windows and panels to give a secure and calming area as well as barred doors allowing dogs to talk to one another. All the kennels feature underfloor heating throughout.

If you have a particularly nervous dog, the upstairs kennels are modelled more like the cattery, with each pen sectioned off with sound-proof double glazing making it more relaxing for dogs who are timid or just prefer a quieter life. This luxury pet holiday village offers 46 canine and 22 cat chalets of varying size from single occupancy rooms to family suites. @SixerRMC

Centre Barks@Moscar have recently installed new viewing windows down to the kennel block and play areas to allow visitors to see the high quality of care and facilities offered.

“Transparency is really important to us,” says John, who also welcomes visitors to drop in each day between 10am and 4pm to look around.

Upon check-in you will be asked about your pets dietary requirements so that meals can be provided to their needs – major brands of dog and cat food are stocked with a variety of flavours or raw meat diet catered for.

Pets on specific diets are also welcome to bring their own food if preferred. Dog owners will also be asked about their pets exercise routine and if they are able to be walked outdoors around the moorland paddocks, play in the new indoor agility arena and if they would like there canine friends to socialise with others in the play area.

Barks Facebook and Instagram pages to see what their residents are getting up to during their holidays. Photos are added daily so there is a good chance your furry friend will become famous. John, Jemma and the team are also more than happy to chat to owners about how their pet is getting on over the phone or via email.

Another fantastic facility is the grooming room. Their onsite qualified groomer is available to bathe, trim and blow dry dogs, while those staying seven days or more receive a complementary bath, so that when you come to collect them, they are just as pampered as you after your holiday.

The upstairs area is also home to the small animals room, where rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents are welcome to stay. The team have plans to extend this side of the business in future.

Jemma and John Managers John has always had a passion for dogs since he was a young boy and has found his perfect vocation in the kennel industry. Jemma has had a life-long love of all things animal, working at the local animal sanctuary when she was young, having various pets all her life and now her own menagerie of horses, chickens, rabbits, dogs, a cat and fish!

Amy M Animal care assistant I studied animal science at Aberystwyth University for three years and have always looked after cats, dogs and guinea pigs in the summer holidays. I’ve always had a love for animals, which only grew when we got our dog Max, as he is such a big part of the family.

Daniella Animal care assistant I love working with animals and currently live on a farm with my own pets. I recently studied animal care level 2 at Sheffield City College and have volunteered at Sheffield City Council’s stray dog kennels. I previously worked as a dog walker and pet sitter and have been at Centre Barks@Moscar since October 2017.

Amy C Kennel and cattery supervisor I studied at Bishop Burton college for my Level 2 Animal Care Certificate.

Previously, I worked as a pet sitter and a business supervisor. I grew up on a farm and have always had a love of animals, especially dogs and horses. I currently have my own horse and two dogs who I love taking for walks around the beautiful Sheffield countryside.

Ellie Groomer and animal care assistant I have been working as a qualified dog groomer in a salon for the past three years. I have also worked as a pet sitter and dog walker and hold the City and Guilds Dog Grooming and Animal Management certificate, as well as a certificate in dog first aid. At home, I love spending time with and caring for my animals including four dogs, a cat, two horses, five chickens and two ducks!

The wing even has a special Play Tower at its heart, which was built to enable more play to be included for in-patient stays in the hospital. It was completely funded by donations to the charity’s Christmas Appeal in 2016.

All of the 72 new bed spaces at the hospital also include beds that will give parents a comfortable place to stay with their child, while over half of patients in the new scheme will get private rooms with en-suite bathrooms. The Children’s Hospital Charity has also funded bedside patient entertainment

systems for each of the new beds, which include built-in Wi-Fi. Even before opening, the new wing had already won two national awards. Design Week gave its 2017 Wayfinding & Environmental Graphics award to The Children’s Hospital Charity for its work with designer Morag Myerscough devising four colourways from bright to calm across all the new bedrooms. This project was two years in the making and innovated by using standard

hospital materials in anew way.

The Children’s Hospital Charity director, David Vernon-Edwards said: “We are so thankful to the many generous supporters that have helped us to raise this amount of money for the region’s biggest charitably supported healthcare project. IN THE REV, WE TRUST Jon McClure has hand-picked his own line-up of cracking bands for Tramlines. Should be good, says Phoebe Seymour.

I

t’s been a hell of a decade for music in Sheffield. Both Jon McClure of Reverend and The Makers and Tramlines Festival have changed and grown so much, giving the Steel City back the strong musical reputation

it deserves.

So it’s only right that a member of Sheffield musical royalty (or should that be clergy?) should get actively involved in the festival’s 10th birthday party. Tramlines have invited Jon to curate The Leadmill Stage, at the festival’s new home in Hillsborough Park, which will feature a line-up of live music exclusively curated by the Reverend and the Makers on the Sunday 22 July.

Jon has now announced his completed his Sunday line-up, which includes headliner Tom Grennan and Sheafs, with the addition of Spring King and Sophie and the Giants.

“I am very excited to be bringing the best new music to Tramlines for my stage curation,” he said. “I’m stoked to be working with my friends at The Leadmill, and having Tom Grennan and Sophie and the Giants there will be ace as they are artists I have 46 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk

worked with previously. All the bands are ace. See you down the front!”

The stage will also allow live comedy to make its debut at the festival in the daytime, with Jon also on board with the curation.

The side-splitting comedy line-up, will be headlined by local legend John Shuttleworth, who will be showcasing his unshakeable faith in his own musical compositions, on Sunday 22 July. Joining John will be Britain’s only ‘goth, lesbian, transsexual comedian’, Bethany Black, with her uniquely dark brand of humour.

Sophie and the Giants are a new band straight out of Sheffield, hotly tipped by the Rev for great things. Despite forming last year, they have already made significant forays into the world of music, touring with Reverend and the Makers, The Rifles, Findlay and Yonaka. Their debut single ‘Monsters’ was released in April filled with roaring guitars and a fem-punk attitude from the lead singer Sophie Scott.

fame following their appearance at SXSW in 2015. After supporting the Kaiser Chiefs ‘Stay Together Tour’ in 2017, they have a host of festival appearances coming up in 2018, including a return performance at Tramlines after their appearance last year.

It’s great to see the Rev so committed to supporting and giving a platform to both home grown Sheffield bands, as well as scouting out some of the best up-andcoming acts and bringing them right to our doorsteps.

Reverend and The Makers will also be performing on the highly coveted main Tramlines Stage on the Saturday night, shortly before Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds take to the stage to headline.

Jon has just as much love for the big name bands at this year’s festival and counts himself as one of Noel’s biggest fans. Though many festival goers may be praying for some Oasis classics at Tramlines 2018, Jon is quick to compliment Noel’s

latest releases with High Flying Birds.

“I salute Noel for trying to do something different. I’ve always wanted him to make that sort of Setting Sun [Oasis] album that he threatened to do with The Chemical Brothers,” said Jon. “Luckily, he’s sent me the album, I’ve heard it, and it is very different from anything you’ve heard from him before.

“Holy Mountain doesn’t really represent how different it is; there are some other bits that are way out west, and I think it’s the best thing he’s ever done. I hope and wish he’ll do more of it.”

Jon is quick to point out that he’s never been one to rest on his laurels. He knows that he’s been lucky to still be going and gigging after all these years. Many people from Sheffield’s illustrious musical past have struggled to make it pay and fell by the wayside.

“I’m a lucky b*****d and I don’t forget that. I never forget that,” he agreed. “The only time it ever went wrong was after the second album. Our record label folded and I was taking loads of drugs and I’d had a few knocks from the press for being political.

There was about a six-month period where nothing happened. I hated it.”

With that in mind McClure is now looking at ways to secure his future for years to come. As well as helping other bands in Sheffield to get on the right track, he often turns to other members of Sheffield music royalty for advice.

“I’ve been talking to Hawley a lot, I look at him and think you’re 50 and you’re doing better than you’ve ever done arguably. How do you get to that point?

That’s what I’m interested in.

“Cos I’m doing alright. Seven albums in. All in the top 20. This one has been the highest since the first one, but I just look at him and think, ‘you’ve smashed it pal!’”

As well as the recent release of seventh album, The King is Dead, McClure has hinted at some more projects in the pipeline that will blend music and some of his other passions together, but until then it’s time to enjoy the limelight at Tramlines.

It’s been an incredible 11 years since Heavyweight Champion of The World burst into our clubs and radio waves, but you can be sure that the band’s hometown fans will be heard singing this classic for miles around Hillsborough Park when they play Tramlines next month.

THE ESSENTIAL FESTIVAL GUIDE Whether you’re a battle-hardened festival-goer or you’re taking your first foray out into the mud and music, here’s a helpful guide to help you get the most out of your Tramlines experience.

Food and Drink Spending days partying to awesome acts makes you work up an appetite, and we all know that quality food and drink are a vital part of any festival experience. With that said, Tramlines have hand-picked the best street food stalls from near and far, with a wide variety of options available to suit everyone’s dietary needs.

They will also be sourcing some of the best local brews, alongside household names.

Head outside the festival and sample delicious street food or pop into one of the local cafés and restaurants.

Access PA Ticket Scheme. Tramlines provide a PA ticket scheme for individuals who would be unable to attend events without bringing a personal assistant. Once you have bought a full price ticket, fill in the online access request form in order to receive your personal assistant ticket.

Viewing Platform A viewing platform with a stewarded accessible toilet is located at the main stage. In order to gain access to the viewing platform, you need a viewing platform wristband. This also comes with a lanyard that can be worn by a personal assistant or companion so that they can join you on the platform.

Accessible Toilets There will be a stewarded accessible toilet located beside the viewing platform at the main stage - a viewing platform wristband is required to gain access to this toilet. There will be other non-stewarded accessible toilets at every toilet block throughout the festival.

Jamboree Arts will also be hosting a circus school on Saturday and Sunday, where you can walk the tight wire or try your hand at juggling and acrobatics in the big top.

Strobe Lighting There will be general warning signs around the main arena if strobe lighting will be used. Due to the nature of the artists, it is likely that strobe lighting will be used throughout the performances. There will not be a warning immediately before a period of strobe lighting.

Medical Services There will be a first aid tent located in the main arena, alongside medics and first aiders on patrol around the event. If you need to store medication, contact Tramlines in advance so the appropriate arrangements can be made.

VIP A new venue means a new VIP area. This year’s VIP will be located next to the lake, setting the scene for an idyllic festival experience. You will get to jump past everyone in the queue and take advantage of the VIP entrance, and it doesn’t stop there, as you will have access to a private bar, lakeside seating and “posh loos” will be on standby all weekend.

After Hours Assistance Dogs Assistance dogs are welcome on site.

Children and Families This year there will be a wide-ranging set of activities for people of all ages and under 12’s get to enjoy the festival for free when accompanied by a paying ticket holder.

By day, Into the Trees is the dedicated family area, and the new pop up cinema, brought to you by Village Screen, will be running across the weekend, if you’re in the mood to kick back with a movie.

Responsible Fishing will be taking the reins on Saturday and Sunday, bringing their woodland workshops that run throughout the weekend - allowing for a little peace and

With that in mind, Sunshine Deli on Penistone Road are preparing to tantalise the tastebuds over the Tramlines weekend and will be serving up a cornucopia of plant-based comfort food, drinks and picnic baskets, to be eaten in, taken away or collected from the borders of Hillsborough Park.

What’s more, look out for the Sunshine Deli pop-up bistro at the Tramlines Fringe event, alongside local artist Big Shaun, Steel City Pies, Sarah Mac and The Women of The Seven Hills.

The menu promises to be jam-packed with mouth-watering vegan-fusion cuisine, including the hangover full monty, bargin buckets, burgers, kebabs, southern fried chick’n, smoothies, ice-cream and freak shakes, to name but a few.

“In the run up to Tramlines’ first year at Hillsborough Park, we’ve hardly been able to contain our excitement, so we thought, what a great idea to not only offer up an array of plant-based foods, but also for friends and families to have a picnic basket delivered,” says Sunshine Deli’s owner, Sarah Short.

“I’ve always felt guilty about eating meat, even though I like the texture and taste, so because there’s a lot more you can do with vegan food now and because it’s so tasty, I’m finding it amazing.

“I’m finding the more I can incorporate into the vegan menu, the more I love it – I absolutely love the

“What I’ve found about the vegan community is that they absolutely love their food, and there’s a different vibe to it.

People have come in and said: I really, really want to try that kebab, I’ve been dreaming about it.”

Wulfman Fury’s George Moran is a busy man, as Phoebe Seymour discovers. ulfman Fury may be one of the newest bands to come out of Sheffield, having only been formed a year ago, but as one of the acts with a prime slot on The Leadmill Stage for Tramlines 2018, they’ve certainly hit the ground running.

Made up of lead singer and rhythm guitarist George Moran, lead guitarist Joe Moran, bassist Steve Harrison, keys and synth player Will Severs and drummer David Mitchell, their music definitely has that Sheffield indie sound – only with a dark and broody edge that makes them stand out from the crowd.

From playing as a stand-in bassist for Reverend and The Makers, to producing other Sheffield artists from his own studio, George is very much in the thick of the Steel City rock scene.

We caught up with the frontman ahead of the band’s Tramline’s slot to find out more…

You’ve been busy rehearsing with Reverend and The Makers.

What’s that for?

Yeah, it’s been really manic – I’ve just had to learn 13 tracks and get up to speed ready for a couple of festivals - Neighbourhood Weekender in Warrington and Sunday Sessions in Norwich.

Do you feel like there’s a tight-knit music community in Sheffield?

Absolutely! Wind back to 10 years ago when I first got to Sheffield, and almost all of the unsigned bands were enemies and now I think there’s more of a community of bands that help each other out, come to each other’s gigs and giving each other support slots. It feels a lot healthier than it used to. I’m from Matlock and I think this is me now. I feel more Sheffield than Derbyshire.

Have you played Tramlines before?

Yeah. Me and Dave played at The Leadmill when we were a fourpiece called Mabel Love in 2010, so for us to get asked to do a main stage was a good boost for us.

What’s your favourite thing about Tramlines?

I love it. I’ve been going from the first year, from it being a free festival, to what it is now, it brings everyone in Sheffield together.

People will moan, ‘why is it not free any more?’ but I don’t think they realise the costs and the logistics involved. I don’t see any negative side though. I think it’s great for the city.

What is your favourite thing about playing live?

Not every gig goes to plan – gear breaks and so on - but then you have these gigs where everything slots into place, when you can see the crowd engaging and it’s all going off. For me, it’s a real switch-off from the everyday world. When you’re on stage performing, there’s nothing else in your head apart from that.

Which song goes down well at your gigs?

The first track we put out, Night Sweats, is definitely the most receptive one. It’s a very fast, upbeat, scratchy, garage rock tune.

We had it in the middle of the set, but then it made more sense end on a high. We’ve also got two new singles, Insular Behaviour and Tectonic, which are both in the same vein as Night Sweats – they’re both really upbeat, short, snappy songs – we’ve had a good response from them too.

What can we expect from Wulfman Fury’s Tramlines performance?

We’ve got a visuals guy who will be doing live projections on the screen, which is all triggered. Even though we are a new band, I think the show will be quite big. Expect a very tight, polished, big show.

Patawawa are promising lots of high energy fun when they hit Tramlines.

Phoebe Seymour meets Matlock’s finest. f Patawawa’s music has proven anything, it’s that disco isn’t dead. Out of Matlock comes an electronic trio featuring Sam Wilmot and Beth Garrett on vocals and Rory Lovatt taking care of funky beats and glittering guitars.

With everything from the sun-drenched vocals of 2017 single Diversion, to the pure party beats of Patagonia from 2018 EP, Bedroom, as well as bags of critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian (New Band of the Week, October 2015) and NME (Top 100 Bands 2018), this is an act you don’t want to miss at Tramlines this year.

We caught up with Sam ahead of their slot on T’Other Stage at Hillsborough Park, to talk musical influences, festival season and the challenges of keeping secrets…

VIBE TALKIN’

You’ve been compared to Jungle and Daft Punk. Are they big influences?

100 per cent - I’m big fans of both of those guys. I mean, Jungle’s album last year was one I listened to probably the most and the new single, Happy Man is just as good so it probably was in my mind to sing Jungle-y!

What does Patawawa mean?

It’s a Patterdale terrier and a Chihuahua dog breed. I think it was Rory’s mum who came up with it. We were trying to come up with band names for ages and they were all rubbish – not that Patawawa is amazing or anything!

Have you played Tramlines before?

We played a fringe event last year at Crystal. We were on really early on Friday evening so it wasn’t really busy, but it was alright.

We’ve never played main Tramlines before and it’s a really good stage as well so it’s going to be really cool.

Which song goes down best live?

Patagonia - the last single we released in January - always goes down well at gigs, but we haven’t played any festivals yet, so we’re looking forward to playing that live at Tramlines.

You were in NME’s Top 100 bands 2018. That must have given you a boost!

There wasn’t a numbered list, but there was a top 25 who had a piece written about them and we were one of them. It was nice because it was one of the last print magazines they did. I’d always wanted to be in NME so it was a bit of a dream for me.

Have you done many festivals?

Yeah, we’ve done Standon Calling, Y Not a few times, Beat Herder last year and we’ve actually got a really big one coming this year, but it’s not been announced yet, so we can’t tell you! I think we did 10 last year and we’ll probably be doing a similar number this year. It’s always a good, full summer.

Any EPs or albums in the pipeline?

We’ve got a single coming out in June, then we’re doing a big tour in September and October and bringing out an EP around then. I can’t really talk 2019. There are some things, but I don’t want to say anything in case they don’t happen.

What can we expect from your Tramlines performance?

High energy, lots of fun and my favourite word, lots of vibes!

What’s your favourite thing about playing festivals?

Licensee Sarah Barton and her partner, Marcus Anderson, took over as landlady and landlord at the beginning of December 2017, but were keen to keep the ethos the same.

“Our pub is all about socialising and keeping the community together in a place that people love,” says Sarah. “We are one of the last ‘proper’ pubs left and we love that people can gather here knowing that it’s a friendly pub where they can talk to one another – whether they know each other or not.”

Like any good ‘proper’ pub, The Wharncliffe Arms serves a range of refreshing pints including three permanent ales and two guest ales from Bradfield Brewery, as well as all your favourite lagers and ciders such as Carling, Budweiser, Guinness, John Smith’s and Strongbow Dark Fruits – perfect for those hot summer days.

If you’re after something stronger, there is a fantastic choice of spirits including vodka, rum, brandy and a range of different gins, as

well as spirits to get the party started such as sambuca, Jägermeister, firebombs and tequila. A choice of red, white and rose wines and prosecco, as well as a selection of hot drinks are also available.

STANNINGTON CARNIVAL IS BACK WITH A WHOLE NEW LEASE OF LIFE. tannington Carnival has been a beloved annual event for the past 35 years, and many residents couldn’t imagine a summer without it. So it was a scary prospect last year when the committee announced they’d be stepping down.

Thankfully, a whole new committee has stepped in for 2018 and is breathing new life into the carnival. Taking place on Saturday 14 July, from 12pm to 5pm at Stannington Park, the team are keen to build on the event’s success, whilst keeping everyone’s favourite events and activities.

Back for 2018 will be the funfair and Punch and Judy show, as well as music by the Stannington Brass Band and Training Band and the ever-popular Scruffs dog show. Other exciting competitions will include Puncake Day, for lovers of baking and wordplay, and a fancy dress competition for ages 11 and up.

Other great events for kids include the circus skills workshop and target practice with the Abbeydale Archers. Stannington Brass Band will be joined in the arena by a range of talented performers such as BM Myers School of Theatre Dance, Dance Dynamics, Boomshanka Tribal and Red Dragon Taekwondo. Completing the varied line-up will be songs by Stannington school children and axe and fire juggling by Chris Marley.

After all that action you’ll have worked up an appetite, and there will be no shortage of amazing caterers. Giant Frying Pan will be cooking up some tasty Lincolnshire sausages, N & A Catering will be providing all your roast meats, while Stoney's

Veloce Fresco will be bringing their woodfired pizzas, Mediterranean Falafel specialise in vegetarian food, while carb-lovers will be sure to head over to Kevin’s Pies and Tornado Potato.

For dessert, there’s Crafty Creations Cakes, Nellie's (crêpes and sweet treats), We Luv Brownies, made with Our Cow Molly butter and Yorkshire flour, and The Refresh Shed, serving shaved ice. Bookings are still being taken so there are many more to be announced.

What’s more, associated events will be taking place in the surrounding pubs and

venues. Stannington Methodist Church, Knowle Top, will be providing refreshments from 10am and entertainment from midday onwards by the Stannington Mixed Voice Choir, handbell ringing and more.

Not only is the event fun for all the family, it’s a great way to raise money for the community too. More than £60,000 has been raised and spent by community organisations on projects that have a direct benefit on local people’s lives.

Past beneficiaries include the 163rd Stannington Brownies and Guides, 164th Sheffield Scouts Group, Action for Stannington, Friends of Knowle Top, Stannington and District Royal British Legion, Stannington Brass Band and Training Band, Friends of Nook Lane Junior School, Stannington Library, Stannington Players, Stannington Village Badminton Club, Underbank Chapel Graveyard Fund and many more.

Heather Da Costa, vice chair of the carnival committee said: “Stannington Carnival is a real community event. It gives people from all parts of the community a chance to come out and meet, acknowledge and to talk to each other.

“Above all though, Stannington Carnival is a fun day out. It brings to people’s doorstep the kind of entertainment they would otherwise have to travel many miles to find, or miss out on all together.”

Springwood Care Home residents enjoy a taste of the Caribbean Residents at Springwood Residential Care home enjoyed a taste of international cuisine as they participated in the National Activities Provider Association 2018 Challenge.

This year’s challenge saw homes across the country focus on links with countries in the Commonwealth.

For Springwood in Herries Road – one of the chain of ten homes operated across the city by not for profit organisation Sheffcare – that meant an opportunity to enjoy the tastes and styles of life in the Caribbean.

“It is always important to us that we offer a full range of stimulating activities at all our homes,” said Sheffcare chief executive Belinda Black.

“The NAPA Challenge is a day that is always enjoyed by both residents and staff.”

Showcase for Support Dogs Sheffield charity Support Dogs held their annual showcase to thank sponsors for their continuing support, which enables them to continue their life-changing work.

More than 150 people packed into the Crucible foyer for the event, including the Master and Mistress Cutler, the High Sherriff, corporate guests, sponsors, clients, staff, volunteers – and of course, dogs.

Support Dogs’ partnership ambassador David Heugh welcomed and thanked guests for their invaluable contribution to the charity’s work, and urged others to take up corporate sponsorship packages.

Guests heard how the charity’s assistance dogs have transformed the lives of three clients: Amy Williams, who has severe epilepsy; Grainne O’Connor, who has MS; and Anna Duthie, mother of Alex, a young boy with autism.

There was also a video demonstration of the assistance dogs’ skills and abilities, from helping with everyday tasks, going for help in an emergency, and keeping children with autism safe.

The event was sponsored by ESP Projects, etiCloud and PM Properties.

Support Dogs’ fundraising manager Danny Anderson said: “This was our biggest showcase event yet. It was fantastic opportunity for us to tell existing supporters about how their support has helped us in our work and also to encourage others who may not yet be supporters about the difference their contribution – large or small – could make.”

Support Dogs, whose national training centre is in Brightside, has three training programmes: for children with autism and adults with epilepsy and physical disability.

Sheffield mum’s plea for help Eilish Jennings is a mum of three with a daughter Elsie, aged four and twin boys Billy and Tom, just turned two, whose life has been touched by tragedy.

The 36-year old and partner Simon Hobson were stunned earlier this year to be informed that her cancer had returned and the proposed NHS treatment of chemotherapy was not a cure.

Eilish now wants to raise funds for more proactive treatment and that means going abroad and paying her own way.

She said: “How do you process the thoughts of not being here for your children, how do I comprehend not giving my children a kiss goodnight anymore? I have to be here for my children, partner, family and friends. I need to get the best treatment available for me and this is why I am pleading to you all to please help us.”

Eilish was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 34 weeks pregnant with the twins. Once they were born she endured chemotherapy and a double mastectomy and reconstruction followed by radiotherapy.

Now the cancer has returned she says: “We have been recommended that the Hallwang Clinic (amongst others in Europe) is one of the best in the world, offering the latest in cutting edge treatments that the NHS simply can’t provide.

“They are not promising the world, they are not selling impossible dreams. They have a record of extending and saving the lives of people with conditions just like mine.”

Yee-haw – gala goes western!

WILD WEST THEME FOR VILLAGE’S BIG DAY. summer gala sounds like the archetypal British event, but in Oughtibridge, they are looking to the Wild West for inspiration.

Oughtibridge Village Gala is returning to Coronation Park on Saturday 30 June with their most exciting theme yet. This year will be the first Wild West gala. So dust off your cowboy boots, hats and neckerchiefs to join in with the fun, as there will be plenty of activities to have the whole family saying yee-haw!

The main arena act will be Pecan Pete, a gun slingin', lasso spinnin', whip crackin' cowboy, who will also be running workshops during the afternoon for any wannabe cowboys and cowgirls. There will also be line dancing, tomahawk throwing, panning for gold, a tin-can alley, a rodeo bull and many other themed stalls.

As is traditional, the gala will begin with a parade which will be officially opened by this year’s Gala Princess, Libby, before making its way through the village. Once at the park, there will be all the usual gala favourites awaiting visitors, only with a western twist.

Gala competitions following this year’s Wild West theme include baking, arts and crafts, photography and floral categories, with titles such as 'Carat Cake' and 'Craft a cactus'. The ever-popular Scrufts dog show, run by Oscars and Impawtant Friends, is also back with some exciting new categories for 2018.

Volunteers will also be on hand serving pizza, sandwiches, cakes and sweet treats along with hot drinks from the Pavillion.

Worrall Foods will be manning the BBQ and serving up their very own delicious burgers, whilst The Little Sausage Shop will be bringing their reared pulled-pork and other products from there shop just up the hill from the park. There will also be candy floss, ice creams, sweets and cold drink stalls to wash down all these delicious local treats.

The annual Sports Night has also become a local tradition in recent years. Taking place before the gala on Wednesday 20 June, the evening will give running enthusiasts the chance to compete in the children’s race at 6.30pm and the Tom Holmes Gala Chase at 7.30pm.

The gala is run by the Oughtibridge Gala Events and Donations Charity, who use the events as a way of raising money for local causes and groups. Over the past five years, the charity has donated well over £17k to numerous local groups.

Donation requests are in the process of being taken, with local Scout and Brownie groups, schools, churches, lunch clubs and Friends of Coronation Park being the expected beneficiaries from this year’s takings.

But not only is it financially important, it’s socially significant to the community too.

Co-organiser Sandra Walton said: “People have such busy lives these days and often

don't 'bump into' old friends and neighbours as they might once have, so the Oughtibridge Village Gala is a great opportunity to catch up with people.

“It's often the way that new families to the village find out what's going on, as it gives established local groups the chance to showcase what they are doing within the community and new groups are able to introduce themselves.

“For example, one group this year are fundraising to purchase and maintain two defibrillators in the village, along with offering training on how to use them should they need to. Plus, it’s a good day out and it’s just around the corner!”
