Obviously that’s not always the case but let’s be positive here. ! ! ! # "! # !" ! !# ! of the easiest and best ways to reach your targets and no doubt in 2024 you’ll see numerous people lacing up brand new trainers and hitting the roads and trails as " !# ! ! ! "! !"# !

Running is one of the most easily accessible pastimes; you can do it anytime, anywhere and either on your own or in a group. You don’t need to splash out on expensive monthly gym subscription fees or even any specialist kit. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes and clothing and plenty of motivation.

Many of you will turn to the brilliant NHS app ‘Couch to 5k’, which is a great training tool and good for encouragement too. But what happens when you hit that

milestone? Some of you will be happy to have reached that goal, after all, it’s a fantastic achievement, but what if you want to push on, to go further, faster and better?

This is a place where lots of runners come unstuck and without the support of the app, which had pushed you on to that 5k goal, or friends, it’s easy to lapse back into old ways, undoing all that hard work you may have done over a period of weeks or months.

One person who knows plenty about ! ! " # ! ! # !" ! ! general, is Matt Rimmer. Matt will be a familiar face to many runners in the city; if you’ve not seen him pounding the streets or trails, or taking part in events, he’s the manager at specialist running shop, MyRaceKit North, on Sharrow Vale Road.

The shop has become a destination for runners of all abilities over the years who head there for the latest kit or for general advice.

Matt grew up in Gleadless and although he ran a little at school and college he only got into running more seriously in 2012.

“I played football mainly and went into

coaching which I did for 25 years at various clubs, mainly in a community capacity,” he recalled. “In 2012 I was working at ! ! #"! "! # ! programme when some of the lads ! # ! ! !

“So we started running round the football pitches, it took us about 1hr 20mins to do 10k and we were quite chuffed. When it got #! ! ! ! # # ! " ! " ! from me so I did it on my own. I carried on from there.”

Matt was well and truly bitten by the running bug and from there started running more regularly, mainly on roads because he wasn’t too sure what he should be doing.

“I did what everyone else does and go on Google and search for things but found myself confused, there was lots # ! # ! #" # ! ! !

“Eventually I joined a running club, Steel City Striders, and found lots of people run for different reasons, it doesn’t matter size, shape, ability, age, it’s very inclusive.”

have a ready-made group of mates with a shared goal. It proved to be a catalyst for Matt to push on and eventually he started leading some of their sessions, which in %$#"! !% ! ! " ! # ! #% % "! in Leadership in Running Fitness and Coaching in Running Fitness.

“Doing that helped me with my running, understanding what I should and shouldn’t be doing,” Matt added. “It comes back to motivation, some people need that group to ! $%! % ! %# # ! !% ! %! % ! ! !

I stuck with them.”

Since that time, Matt has pushed himself to run lots of different distances and races, from 5k all the way up to ultra-marathons. % $ ! ! % % "! $" # ! $# " ! lockdown.

“During that time I just really enjoyed leaving my front door and running out in the hills for a few hours,” he said. “I realised that I didn’t need the events. I didn’t like the build-up, it made me really nervous and anxious so I stopped doing them.

“I’ve started building back up though and have done a few 10ks and an ultra. I prefer trail running but for convenience, roads are just easier. I like going out getting muddy and running up the hills.” ! " ! # # ! # !" % ! #! their hills so does this make it easier or harder for those looking to take up running #!% ! # %!% ! #! #!% ! " !% ! # ! %%! ! %! "! ! ! ! " % ! is good for your strength, and if you’re running in the Peak District, affords some fantastic views as well.

“In a way it’s cheating,” he laughed. “If you train on the hills and get good on the ! "! $! ! # ! %! $ ! " ! %! ! %! # ! "! $! %! # ! "% ! it and more experienced, you start to realise you can use hills as a rest.

“If you’re competing, it’s not always best to run up a hill. Sometimes you run up a hill and get to the top and you’re too tired to push on. I’ve seen runners overtaken by people walking.”

As well as working at MyRaceKit North, Matt also offers online coaching offering advice on anything from Couch to 5k to ultra running.

His advice to novice runners is aim to " ! !# $% " ! " ! % !% ! % ! " !% # ! things a week over a consistent period can # ! $ ! " % ! " ! ! $ # ! %#$ " ! with doing straight running he recommends incorporating other activities such as cycling and swimming.

“My biggest advice is to think why you’re doing it. If you can’t answer that you might not have the motivation to carry on,” said Matt. “For a lot of people it’s a personal challenge but it’s important to get ! !# $% " ! " ! % !% ! % ! % # ! % ! easy to think ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’.

“Find what you enjoy. If you enjoy going out to the Peaks and through the woods, do that, if you enjoy going on the roads, !% % ! ! %!$ ! ! %! " ! " ! %! $! prefer.”

n exuberant man paces around the room wafting vigorously as smoke billows into the air - moments after I’d been encouraged to close my eyes and relax.

Florence, I’d taken a stroll away from the crowds and over the Arno River for an alternative tasting experience.

The smell became increasingly intense as I drifted off in the setting of an alchemical renaissance – tucked away in a back street in the historic San Niccoló region of the beautiful city.

But there was no need to make a hasty exit, as I was being treated to the novelty of an incense ceremony in the mystical surroundings of a perfumery.

The man dressed all in black whipping his arms around as he circled our table was Sileno Cheloni – a perfumery master who was burning incense rather than a

restaurant.

speaking of a passion for perfumery that has taken him all over the world in search of ingredients to create hundreds of sweetsmelling scents.

The perfumery welcomes couples, groups and anyone interested in creating their own fragrance from the riches he has sourced on his travels.

Maestro Cheloni invited around a dozen of us to take a whiff of alluring samples before recommending we shut our eyes as Arabian music played during what felt like it had turned into a meditation session.

Stepping back onto the bustling streets of the charming Tuscan capital, I felt thoroughly relaxed knowing I still had a massage to come at the plush La Gemma Hotel where I was fortune enough to be staying.

April just around the corner from iconic landmarks, swanky shops and restaurants.

A short stretch of the legs from Piazza della Repubblica, the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza del Duomo and via de’ Tornabuoni, the luxurious La Gemma is the perfect place to unwind after taking in the many delights Florence has to offer.

There was a lovely laid-back feel throughout my stay at the glamourous and stylish oasis – which has a sophisticated decor style inspired by the colour palette of the famous nearby Duomo cathedral, with its green marble and pink hued stone.

My eyes lit up when I opened the door to marvel at a spacious suite that I could happily have lived in - and there was another surprise in store when I was called into action to make drinks in the cozy cocktail bar.

Having swiftly concluded I was better off on the other side of the bar as I tried a few tricks of the trade during a mixology class, my reward for getting into the spirit of things was a sumptuous dinner in the top-class hotel restaurant.

Just when I thought I’d already overindulged, out came the Iberian pluma, onion and maitake, with Jerusalem artichokes to come and white chocolate petit fours rounding off a stunning tasting menu.

And I was certainly not thinking I could get too much of a good thing the following morning, while sauntering the streets scenting more culinary delights on a Florentine food and wine tour.

took me down small alleyways and a little off the beaten track to discover where the locals head for coffee, food, wine and chocolate.

I’m also given an insightful history lesson as we meander through the masses of tourists to nip into what felt like

Stuart Gosling’s exploits will allow residents at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home to enjoy an extra special activity. esident Stuart Gosling at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home in Stocksbridge has started a fundraiser in support of the home’s comfort fund. He has set out to raise enough money for all his friends and other residents in the home to enjoy an extra special activity together. So far Stuart has raised an amazing sum of nearly £400.

Stuart commented: “I’m fundraising for our resident’s comfort fund so that the money can be spent where needed however I would like it if we could put it towards another trip to the seaside as it was a big hit with everyone at Belmont House.”

“Stuart came up with his fundraising idea after a trip to Bridlington. His main aim is to help the home do something that everyone can look forward to. Stuart is also doing more than just growing his beard. On 1 December, Stuart had his beard dyed red and green so that he is in full Christmas spirit,” commented

“I’ve never grown a beard before, I’ve always been a clean-shaven man,” added Stuart. “But as I’m growing this beard, I can hand on my heart say I won’t do it again as it’s very itchy. But I’ve always wanted to try new and different ways of fundraising.”
