From humble beginnings...Bumfords through the years

Golden anniversary BUMFORD HEATING LIMITED – CELEBRATING 50 YEARS IN BUSINESS. t was a year that changed history: 1968 was a year of seismic social and political change across the globe, from the burgeoning anti-Vietnam war and civil rights movements in the United States, protests and revolutions in Europe and the first comprehensive coverage of war and resultant famine in Africa. The world would never be the same again.

It was also the year that a plumber from Sheffield decided to make a go of it himself.

And so Bumford Heating was born.

Chris Bumford started the business, along with his wife Beryl, from humble beginnings in their spare bedroom in Wincobank. He installed his first boiler that same year, and never looked back.

In 1978, Bumfords had outgrown the Hemingfield site and moved to larger premises on Millhouses Street, Hoyland. The company is now based at Shortwood Court, Hoyland, where it has remained since 2008 and houses a modern office and warehouse.

Now run by Chris’ son Neil, the new premises have enabled the company to expand further and include a state-of-the-art heating showroom. Though Chris has stepped down as manager, he still has some involvement in the family business.

Much has changed since 1968, but the Bumfords ethos remains very much the same.

“We are incredibly proud of this milestone – many businesses don’t make it past the first few months,” says Neil. “It can be difficult to know which heating company to trust. I think the reason Bumfords is still here is that we value honesty and integrity, and we get the job done at a fair price. And now with over

IT’S THE MOST MAGICAL TIME – AND PERFECT FOR CELEBRATING YOUR BIG DAY. HANNAH SANDERS LOOKS AT HOW YOU CAN MAKE YOUR WINTER WEDDING ONE TO REMEMBER. lthough many couples choose to say ‘I do’ in the spring and summer months, there is something utterly magical about a winter wedding.

Often described as the most romantic season, winter weddings are becoming increasingly popular, with shimmering snowflakes (if you’re lucky!), champagne-hues and twinkling lights adorning the mantles, not to mention a beautiful backdrop for memorable photography.

So, if you’ve always wanted to have a winter wonderland fairytale wedding, here are some ideas to help you embrace the cold and create the perfect day.

A

WEDDINGS

Colour schemes Avoid the classic red and greens and opt for a silver, white and baby blue theme.

Why not decorate in rich, warm tones of berry red, burgundy or gold or add extra wintery romance with lots of natural greenery. Textures are also important in the colder months, so consider using velvets or satins.

CAKE Winter wedding cakes are not only about style and sophistication, but there needs to be an element of warmth and comfort, and of course it goes without saying that it should be a showstopper.

If you want to add a rustic touch, choose the popular ‘naked cakes’ and decorate with berries, pine cones and greenery. You could even tie some cinnamon around the bottom layer to give it that festive scent. Add a boho element with a natural colour palette and charming deer decorations – don’t forget to add that bit of sparkle with a dusting of gold glitter. If you are wanting to go for simplicity, opt for a three-tier cake decorated in ivy icing, add a Mr & Mrs topper to the top in your colour scheme and create a waterfall of seasonal blooms down the side.

Bride & Groom wear There’s a lot to consider when planning any wedding, but winter weddings come with their own unique challenges and considerations – especially the temperature.

Staying warm is essential as nobody likes to see red noses or blue hands so picking the right accessories to keep you cosy is key.

For the bride, the most obvious option to add some extra warmth to your outfit is sleeves. Full length, three-quarter or short sleeves add that bit of coverage to keep the chills away. Alternatively, pair your dress with faux fur throws, shawls or brightly glittering cardigans to add some sparkle to your day.

When it comes to the groom’s attire, it is still important for him to look elegant while of course keeping warm. Plaid shirts paired with bow ties are stylish and simple, and for those outside photographs add a woollen jumper. If you want to opt for something a little smarter, have a tweed or velvet suit.

Don’t forget footwear either. Boots for both parties can be a tasteful (and practical) shoe option for winter weddings.

Venue The venue is one of the most important aspects of your big day, so it’s key to take your time and choose the place that is right for you both.

Unless you want to provide your guests with parkas and furry mittens, getting married in the winter months means an indoor wedding. If you are settled on a true winter wonderland, visit castles and stately homes, which will be an ideal setting for an unforgettable wedding.

If you want something more traditional, choose your local church for the ceremony followed by a reception at a favourite hotel or, if you are set on an outdoor wedding perhaps in a barn, make sure it is well insulated and be prepared to have lots of heaters.

If you’re opting for a registry office make sure you know where you are going for photographs, and if this is outside then supply your guests with brollies, scarves, hats, gloves and even blankets.

Bridesmaids & Groomsmen Don’t forget to keep your wedding party warm too, with cover-ups for the bridesmaids and scarves for the groomsmen.

For the dresses, go for a charcoal grey, burgundy red or if you are feeling festive opt for sequin or glitter dresses. Keep it simple with the groomsmen by choosing a white shirt and pairing it with a coloured tie.

WINTER WEDDING TIPS: • If possible have just one venue • Allow extra travel time • Have a coat check at the reception • Keep guests warm by supplying blankets and hand-warmers

• Bring umbrellas in case of rain • Have wellies on standby • Make sure you adjust your photography schedule as it gets darker earlier in winter @SixerRMC

Favours Give out small packages of chocolatecovered cranberries, roasted chestnuts or salted caramel toffee. You could even create mini hot chocolate mixes, soy candles or bake gingerbread cookies.

Décor Decorations set the tone for the entire day, so you need to be sure that you love the décor at both the ceremony and reception.

Make use of pine cones by turning them into a placecard holder, garland or add some gold spray and use them as part of a table centrepiece or try spray-painted wine bottles paired with pillar candles to create a cosy, inexpensive wedding look.

Another great way to add some colour to your venue is through chair decorations. Use brightly coloured ribbon to add bows to the chairs, create dainty wreaths or even glitter cut outs of simple stars to add a touch of elegance.

Keep your guests toasty with a hot beverage bar, where they can help themselves to hot chocolate, mulled wine or hot apple cider. Decorate your drink station with DIY signs and simple foliage.

Say ‘I do’ at Fox Valley NEW NORTH SHEFFIELD WEDDING VENUE IS UNVEILED. here is now a brand new place to say “I do” as north Sheffield’s awardwinning Fox Valley has been licensed by the local authority to hold wedding ceremonies and civil partnerships.

A wedding service or civil partnership can take place in the beautiful new bandstand at Fox Valley, which overlooks the fountain area, or indoors at Ponti’s Italian Kitchen and Blakes Tearoom at Sandersons Department Store.

Fox Valley is owned and managed by Dransfield Properties. Operations director Medi Parry-Williams said: “Having a shopping centre licenced for weddings may sound a little bit unusual, but Fox Valley is not a typical shopping centre.

“We pride ourselves on being very much part of the community and offering the opportunity for people to have their wedding ceremony here is something we are really excited about – the nearest register office is around ten miles away.

“As soon as the beautiful new bandstand was installed, we could see what a great venue the centre would make for a wedding.

Ponti’s Italian Kitchen and Blakes Tea Room have private function rooms with a capacity of 70 guests, while Ponti’s is also offering an evening reception package for 120 guests in the upstairs private dining area.

Retailers across Fox Valley are also offering wedding guest discounts including Hummingbird Bridal Studios, new to the centre.

Rallying for support ROUNDABOUT ARE RAISING VITAL FUNDS BY HOSTING A RACE TO MONTE CARLO. RACHEL MARTIN LOOKS AT THE VITAL WORK THE SHEFFIELD CHARITY DO. oundabout, Sheffield’s youth housing charity, provides shelter, support and life skills to over 150 young people in Sheffield everyday who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

They provide emergency hostel Matt Cockayne accommodation, a range of medium term accommodation in safe bedsits and in shared housing throughout the city, and can support young people living independently in their own accommodation, who might otherwise struggle to do so.

Roundabout is committed to preventing young people from becoming homeless and believes home is the best place to be, if it is safe to be there. But by far the most common risk to a young person is problems with family, which often leads to feeling they need to leave home.

Roundabout’s homeless prevention service offers family mediation and advice for young people at risk of homelessness, and their peer education project trains young people who have experienced homelessness to go into schools and increase awareness and understanding – positively impacting on pupils, preventing youth homelessness and empowering the peer educators, who become more confident and gain a BTEC

qualification, thus assisting them on the path to self-sufficiency.

Earlier in February, the charity, which turned 40 last year, launched a city-wide fundraising event, Pulp’s Nick Banks Bangers & Cash – the UK’s first art road show banger rally.

The rally is aimed at local businesses and Roundabout is looking for 40 to sponsor an old banger and take part. Teams of three intrepid adventurers from each business will then travel the 1,219 miles from Sheffield to Monte Carlo, each with a unique design painted on the bonnet by a local artist, which will be returned to Sheffield to be auctioned

as unique pieces of art to raise vital funds for Roundabout.

Shauna and Cheryl, Roundabout’s mediation worker

Shauna’s story: hen Shauna was just nine years old, her mum passed away and the grief put a huge strain on her family and relationships with her dad and brother.

A few years later, when Shauna was 12, her grandmother passed away, and this meant the already strained relationships began to get worse.

As Shauna grew further apart from her dad, she stayed at her aunt’s house, to escape the tension in the household, and when she turned 16, she finished school and started studying hairdressing at college.

By this time, her relationship with her dad had reached breaking point and she moved out of the family home to live with her boyfriend. But unfortunately, the relationship didn’t last, and Shauna had no choice but to move back in with her father months later.

Over the following months, Shauna’s relationship with her dad began to improve.

Things got easier at home and she concentrated on her college work, successfully completing her hairdressing course.

Once she had finished, Shauna was keen to leave college, rather than carry on studying, however her dad insisted that if she wanted to stay living in his home, she needed to be studying. With this in mind, Shauna returned to college to study childcare, but her relationship with her dad became frayed again.

The situation worsened, leading to Shauna leaving the family home at 17, and with nowhere else to go, she was referred to Roundabout.

Due to her maturity, Shauna was given the opportunity to move into Number 11 – the property next door to Roundabout’s hostel, which has eight self-contained flats suitable for young people who have shown signs of

progressing towards independence, but still need support from a key worker.

From here, Shauna moved into one of Roundabout’s resettlement properties, where she lived in a semi-supported housing setting.

However, Shauna struggled with the lack of round-the-clock support, so moved back into the hostel.

Once she was back in the hostel, Shauna was able to get the support she needed to feel more independent and ready to have a place of her own, and after a few months, with support from her key worker, she applied for her own flat.

Knowing that this was a big step, Roundabout continued to offer Shauna support once she’d left the hostel and she was assigned a support worker from Roundabout’s supporting tenants’ team, who help young people in their own properties to maintain the tenancy and cope with independent living.

Currently, Shauna and her dad are working hard to build their relationship and Shauna is attending mediation sessions. These sessions allow one or both parties to talk about their differences, helping to sort through their issues and resolve problems.

“I have been accessing help from mediation in order to help my relationship with my

dad,” says Shauna. “It’s only me who sees Cheryl and she has helped me to understand my dad’s side of things. She’s also helped me to understand why I react to him the way I have been.

“Since all this, our relationship has massively improved and the majority of our arguments have stopped. We can now sit and talk without arguing, and this is all thanks to mediation.”

Shauna has since volunteered at Roundabout, helping Cheryl by attending events and aiming to promote the mediation work offered by Roundabout, and in addition, she has been part of the peer education team.

She was trained to go into schools and deliver lessons, aiming to break down the stereotypes around homelessness and raise awareness amongst young people of what to do if they have to leave home and how to access support.

Now living independently, Shauna is a qualified youth worker: “Without Roundabout, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Their help has meant that I’m now able to live independently and have the confidence to do other things, and I’m keen to use my experiences to help other young people who need support.”

The goal for treating shoulder pain is to reduce inflammation, stretch tight muscles and strengthen weak muscles. It is important to temporarily reduce or stop activities that aggravate the shoulder.

ucked away a corner of Stannington, perfectly nestled between the rolling hills, a craftsman is hard at work.

Looking across Sheffield’s valleys and being greeted with breath-taking views, made even more spectacular on the day we met by the blanket of snow settling on the ground, this is where local woodcarver Nick Hunter spends his days.

After studying fine art in South Africa, Nick returned to London to continue his studies before settling in Sheffield.

“I had never thought about a career as a woodcarver – the cards just fell that way. I remember when I was a child, amongst posters of The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix was a photograph from National Geographic of an old man in a carving workshop. Looking back on that there must have been something

drawing me to this career.”

As a talented self-taught woodcarver and skilled painter, Nick uses his many years’ experience to introduce simple and delicate beauty into people’s homes through handcarved birds.

Through observing nature, Nick brings originality into each individual tiny carved bird, from the shape of the beaks to the sparkle in their eyes, and brings their personalities to life through the addition of delicate colour.

For Nick, the creative process begins with researching and observing each individual species. He then spends time sketching, understanding the shape and different elements of the birds before the carving process.

“Once I have the basic shape, I get a block

of jelutong wood, draw the side shape and cut it out. Next I move onto the beak which is added in as an extra piece of stronger wood and then it is time for the carving process.

“I don’t sand anything, as that can sometimes deaden the effect. Once the bird is finished, I use a casein paint to add the finishing touches, and then usually place them on plinths make out of burr oak.”

Whether he is carving a wren, woodpecker, kingfisher, wagtail or a starling, Nick uses a range of tools and his artistic eye to create something that captures their simplistic essence, and he makes every species hard not to admire.

“It’s hard to give an exact measurement of the time it takes, as there are so many different processes. Sometimes I spend longer on the researching and drawing of a particular species before carving.

“I actually really like the sound of the carving, and find it therapeutic. I worry about a lot of things in life, but running out of ideas is never one of them, and I find it satisfying when i transform the birds from a sketch into a 3D piece of artwork.”

Nick enjoys creating unusual species on commission and with his experience in traditional decorative carving and his skills in hand-cut lettering, Nick can personalise each bird’s perch with dates, initials or quotes.

“I’ve previously made a full sized toucan and a kestrel which were both interesting to create. I’ve also made bees which are popular, as well as snails and rabbits.”

Aside from the contemporary birds, Nick also does more traditional work including decorative carving, hand-cut lettering and carving repairs. He’s previously done pieces for Chatsworth House which included an intricate snake banister and carved mouldings.

“The handrails at Chatsworth were done in sections as it was such a big project. I started by carving the heads and tails before moving onto the scales. I got into a nice rhythm with

James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetes.

“My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. I worked out that I was eating 600/700 calories between meals and I was really worried; I didn’t need to be.

“I was apprehensive going into the programme, but once you’re in, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away.”

Alevere quickly taught James that losing weight is about understanding food and the effects of various ingredients in food – ensuring you don’t deprive yourself but you take a regular, balanced approach.

“I began Alevere with an open mind and the thing that I found most refreshing was that the programme was not about dieting but about making permanent adjustments to my lifestyle.

“I started losing weight very quickly, it was like an overnight transformation. My clothes started to feel too big and people started to notice too, you don’t get any more motivational than that.

“Losing weight does not mean giving up everything you enjoy eating. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.”

After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey.

“I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused.

“With good planning and listening the programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others.

“Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you

on how you should eat.

“The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I eat regularly and I still have what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.”

James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable.

“Alevere has totally changed my life.

People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way.

“Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community.

“I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.”

When it comes to winter holidays, we tend to fall into two camps – those who embrace the beautiful yet chilly outdoors, and those who wish to escape to much sunnier climes.

SKIING HOLIDAYS Enjoy the seasonal snow and get the whole family active with a skiing holiday.

Significantly heavy snowfall in January has meant that now is a great time to hit the resorts in the French and Austrian Alps.

Avoriaz is a fantastic destination for families as it is safe, convenient and has the highest and most snow-sure slopes in the Portes du Soleil area. Childcare is also provided at the Village des Enfants in the centre of the resort.

Obergurgl in Austria is another great option as it is picturesque and has easier slopes for beginners.

Children from as young as three can join the Bobo Skiclub or the indoor Bobo Kindergarten.

If you are looking to travel further afield, Tremblant in the French-speaking area of Canada is a purposebuilt village lined with cobbled streets and vibrantlycoloured buildings designed in the old Québec style. It is also home to a highly-rated ski school for children.

Sunny winter holidays Say goodbye to your winter blues with a holiday in a much warmer part of the world.

The Canary Islands are within easy reach with temperatures in the low 20s, while the Caribbean is at its hottest and driest right now.

When it comes to the Canaries, Lanzarote is a good all-rounder, with plenty of family facilities in the Los Pocillos area, close to the popular Puerto del Carmen resort. Inland, Timanfaya National Park offers dramatic landscapes for an action-packed week.

Over in the Caribbean, St Lucia is home to some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches, including the golden strip of Anse Chastanet, while volcanic mountains Gros and Petit Piton are perfect for hiking and picture opportunities. The Bay Gardens Beach Club Resort is family-friendly and is next to Reduit Beach.

Great British holidays Appreciate the beaches, forests and greenery all around us, by packing up the car and taking a trip to a popular UK holiday destination.

It may be too cold to paddle, but there is still plenty to do in the winter months at some of Britain’s favourite seaside towns. Help create a community art hub

Events at Grenoside Community Centre It’s going to be another great year for Grenoside Community Centre with two events taking place next month.

The centre will kick off its season of events with a Jumble Sale on Saturday 3 March from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. The event will take place at Grenoside Scout and Guide HQ, Saltbox Lane, S35 8QS. The entrance fee is just 50p and kids go free. There will be loads of great bargains at rock bottom prices. Everything must go!

Good quality, clean donations will be taken between 7pm and 7.30pm on Friday 2 March or 9.30am to 11am on the day. No electrical items. All proceeds to Grenoside Scout and Guide Group.

The Grenoside Gala Queen is organising a Fundraising Fashion Show and Sale on Monday 12 March at the centre at Main Street, Grenoside, S35 8PR. Designer and high street brands will be available in sizes 8 to 20 at bargain prices.

As many will be aware, Stoneface Creative don’t just create sculptures, but do a lot of work with charities, schools and community groups. They have always done this work in a voluntary, unpaid capacity because they believe that community art should be available to everyone.

They are now planning to work with a wider range of community organisations making Storrs Wood more accessible to a range of people – particularly those who do not normally access community-based art.

However, as a private limited company, they are finding it difficult to access funding support from grant making trusts, who could potentially support beneficial community art and environmental activities.

They are therefore seeking support through their Go Fund Me appeal towards the costs of establishing a not-for-profit/charitable organisation and a project development/training plan, where they intend to learn everything from planning and effectively managing activities, to getting funding to run those activities.

LEARN FRENCH IN 2018 Et Voila is a small private school of French, situated on Ben Lane/Dykes Hall crossroads, opposite Tesco Express – its colourful frontage is sure to catch your eye.

Gone exhibition at Cupola Gallery “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” is a phrase we all know and the Gone exhibition at Cupola Gallery on Middlewood Road will attempt to capture the essence of transient spaces.

Catherine Higham is the artist behind Gone and will be exhibiting around 20 mixed media works on canvas and wood panel varying in size from 20cm to just under a metre square.

“Images often are monochrome, black, white and grey or include a hint or a wash of colour,” says Karen Sherwood, director of Cupola. “Less is so often more in art work, and learning when to leave a surface alone is one of the many challenges of painting. Catherine’s images are often abstract, but occasionally hint at the shape or a structure of what was.”

Catherine adds: “Ideas are expressed using a pared down, modest palette of materials and colour. I like the idea of creating raw, simple artworks in an age of information overload.”

Gone will be exhibited from 10 February to 10 March, with a preview on Friday 9 February from 7.30pm onwards – All welcome.
