‘One hell of a JOURNEY’
Hillsborough’s Cupola Gallery is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a special open
f you ask Karen Sherwood, director and curator of Cupola Gallery, how she would describe her last 35 years, she would say ‘one hell of a journey’.
Karen opened in 1991 around the corner
ground between a betting shop and a launderette – in the middle of a recession.
And there’s been plenty of adversity since.
Supertram – a three-year programme of work started almost immediately to install the tracks right outside her front door. Then there was the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. In both instances, the community rallied.
“One in four businesses went bankrupt during the construction works, it was devastating,” Karen recalls. “But I’m very stubborn and hated the idea of failing through circumstances.”
It’s this stubbornness, and the amazing support of her customers, that sees Karen celebrate such an important milestone this year. To mark the occasion, she is hosting a special open exhibition, which runs until 5 September, as well as a party on Sunday 30 August with food, drink and live jazz. And everyone is welcome.
Despite the adversity, there have been some amazing highs over the last three decades or so, not least the fact that the gallery has shown the work of more than 10,000 artists across every conceivable medium and from every corner of the globe.
“Not only have we shown painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, glass, ceramics, textiles and jewellery, but we have showcased automata, installations, conceptual art, performance art, sound wheelchair dance!” says Karen.
turnover of approximately ten gallery exhibitions per year across our four exhibition spaces and our award-winning sculpture garden. It was and continues to be a rather crazy ride.”
This incredible diversity is currently on show at the open exhibition and is something that gets Karen really excited about art
and is something she is keen to share with her customers.
“Although Cupola cannot possibly celebrate 10,000 artists in one show, we are doing what we can to try to celebrate the incredible diversity and talent of artists by hosting a ‘salon’-type show with over 150 artists representing the diversity for which we pride ourselves,” said Graham Shapley, curator and manager who has worked with Karen for many years.
sit alongside those who are exhibiting for life and creativity. All works are for sale and visitors of all ages are welcome.”
Karen has also commissioned a poem from locally-based award-winning poet Chris Jones, which will be displayed on the end outside wall of the framing department.
Cupola Gallery has four exhibition spaces sculptures. Across this open exhibition, all spaces are being utilised.
As part of the open exhibition, the gallery is hosting a Children’s Choice prize, which is being supported by Fred Aldous. Children under the age of ten are being invited to vote for their favourite artwork in the show – they are always welcome and Karen keeps a huge bucket of Lego for their creative pleasure.
Karen is clearly humbled by reaching
the gallery, which has been fuelled further of her works amongst the many other artists on display.
“I’ve made every mistake in the book. I give business advice now – I can tell
people what not to do!”
jokes Karen. “To say it hasn’t been an easy ride is an understatement but I’m still here. I’ve shown work from all corners of the globe, I’ve shown local talent, I’ve shown people have gone on to do really well… sometimes you’ve just got to keep going.
“There is a joke in the art world that goes: ‘how do you make a small fortune from an art gallery? Answer: start with a large one! I didn’t start with a large one.”
Cupola remains one of the most respected contemporary galleries for the
in the north of England but if there’s one thing that Karen could change after 35 years, it would be for more people from out.
to get people from the
than it is to get people from London,” she laughs.
This celebratory exhibition is the perfect time to seek Cupola out.

elcome to my new column highlighting all the wonderful things that are happening at Wentworth Woodhouse and across the South Yorkshire region. This summer is building up to be a sizzler, not only in terms of temperatures but also the incredible diversity of things to see and do that we now have available in our region. Over the coming months I shall be exploring the very best of what our region has to offer and sharing the highlights with you.
The team at Wentworth Woodhouse launched the 2026 exhibition ‘showcase’ Echoes of the House: Lives in Light and Motion on 7 July. The exhibition transforms the State Rooms with digital storytelling techniques, revealing unexpected and surprising stories from the house by those who shaped it and those that shape it today. Drawing inspiration from historic storytelling devices such as zoetropes and magic lanterns, the exhibition combines striking physical installations with immersive digital experiences. Visitors encounter emotional narratives of real people brought vividly to life, alongside spectacular moments of visual wonder.
Building on the success of the smallscale exhibition If Walls Could Talk from 2021, Echoes of the House embraces the spirit of Phantasmagoria: a constantly shifting world of optical effects, illusions, and fantastical assemblages, creating an exhibition that surprises, delights and reimagines how heritage stories can be told. It’s all very exciting and I believe, quite groundbreaking in the way we are delivering storytelling. The exhibition runs until the beginning of November.
For those on child-minding duty over the summer holidays don’t forget that the activity cabin at Wentworth is open throughout; sit back and relax in a deckchair and let the little ones be entertained with crafting activities and garden games. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
In July I was fortunate to be invited to the launch of the new exhibition ‘Collecting Rotherham’, a major new temporary exhibition at Clifton Park Museum.
Running until Spring 2027, the exhibition invites visitors to travel through 130 years of collecting, showcasing everything from the museum’s very oldest acquisitions to its most recent additions – including items that have never been displayed before.
Clifton Park Museum has been collecting since 1893 and now cares for over 75,000 objects. The size of the collection means they can’t display everything at once;

exhibition features items from the museum’s diverse collections, including Natural Sciences, Fine and Applied Arts, Archaeology, Social and Industrial History, and the York and Lancaster Regimental collection.
Far from a traditional display, the exhibition highlights the odd and eccentric, provoking ideas about the key role museum collections play in producing knowledge and histories, and how the act of collecting world. To bring these concepts to life, the exhibition features a thought-provoking, immersive experience created by Urban Projections, aka Rebecca Smith.
Set within the beautiful Clifton Park, a visit to the museum over the summer offers a full day out at no cost as admission to Clifton Park Museum and the Collecting Rotherham exhibition is free. What’s not to like?
In next month’s column I shall be happening at other attractions in the region over the summer and particularly for those who with families. Keep hydrated folks!

Experience, quality and reliability at Deepcar Windows
In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local doubleglazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone.
A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar.
These premises are now home to a new showroom featuring the latest range of products, from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors.
Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’
Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings.
Ian beams “ Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.”
He continues “ In todays busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window.
Ian’s son Tom and daughter Alice show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities as their father. They are now helping the successful window company build on the nearly 50 years of trading.
After nearly half a century of providing unparalleled products and service, Deepcar invite you to view the latest in home improvements at their showroom. If its experience, quality and reliability you are looking for look no further than Deepcar.

Exciting new PARTNERSHIP
The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation expands across South Yorkshire with SYMCA Partnership – grant applications now open.
The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation is announcing an exciting new partnership with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and South Yorkshire Music Hub, expanding its work beyond
the whole of South Yorkshire.
As part of this, the Foundation is inviting applications for its Open Doors Small Grants Programme, supporting grassroots music activity across the region.
“This partnership with SYMCA is a hugely exciting step forward for The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation and for continuing Sarah’s legacy across South Yorkshire,” said Julie Voisey, Chair. “Sarah was deeply passionate about supporting grassroots music and creating opportunities for people and communities through music, and we are proud to continue that work in her name.
“This programme allows us to expand that support regionally while placing a particular focus on opportunities for young people. By working across South Yorkshire, we can reach more communities, support more organisations, and help ensure that access to music is truly inclusive, something that was
always central to Sarah’s vision.”
Founded in 2020, the Foundation has
reached thousands of people through its work championing grassroots music.
Through this collaboration, the Foundation is delivering the South Yorkshire Music Hub Open Doors Small Grants Programme, a pilot focused on widening access to music for children and young people aged 25 and under across Barnsley,
Funded by SYMCA, the programme offers small grants to grassroots organisations, music educators and community groups.
Grants of £750–£2,000 are available to
• Enable inclusive music-making
• Improve access to instruments and equipment
• Remove barriers to participation
• Reach underrepresented communities
This partnership marks an important step in expanding the Foundation’s reach and building a more connected music ecosystem across South Yorkshire.
• Increase access to inclusive music opportunities
• Support grassroots organisations
• Strengthen regional partnerships and pathways
• Identify gaps to inform future investment
