The treehouse Combining two themes we have already touched upon, a treehouse offers the simple and rustic charm of the barn with the natural charm of the forest.

A treehouse often being a childhood dream, those young at heart will jump at the chance to perform their nuptials here. Thought of as of being quite unconventional in the past, this option is becoming a lot more widely considered.

What is more, a gorgeous forest will make a fantastic backdrop for photos – let’s just hope none of your wedding guests are afraid of heights.

Chapeltown Village Show returns for fourth year Can you grow it, bake it, or make it? If so, make a note of Saturday 23 September in your diary. Chapeltown Forum are presenting the fourth Chapeltown Village Show at the Newton Hall.

Registration of entries will take place from 8.30am to 10.30am and the show will then open to the public from 1pm to 4.30pm. Refreshments will be available until 3.30pm and the presentation of trophies, the auction and the raffle draw will take place at 3pm.

Chapeltown Forum have been pleased with the success of the previous three shows, but would like to make this year the best yet. Planning and preparation are important, but the real success story is the number of exhibitors and their entries. So get into the spirit of this community event and enter.

Fox Valley has welcomed a brand new business venture this month – a beautiful Citroen van, which has been transformed into a fully-fitted mobile café.

The new Café Gen is the little sister of Café Generation in Penistone and can be found next door to Full Gas Bikes in a new landscaped seating area.

The café brings something completely different to the centre with a fantastic range of healthy snacks and smoothies and a menu which has been designed with the cyclist in mind.

This includes healthy breakfasts, lunches, snacks and smoothies, as well as a selection of jacket potatoes, nachos and flatbreads. Café Gen is open from 9.30am to 5pm, seven days a week.

Owners Karen and Scott Waddington said: “We are passionate about wholesome and healthy food and we’re definitely reflecting that in our menu. The response has already been great and we’ve had so many lovely comments about our unusual little café.

Though smiling in photos was not the ‘done thing’ in the early 1900s, you can see a hint of a grin in some of these faces at the wedding of Sam Ashworth and Elsie Matthews.

Taken from the book, Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and High Green by Mel and Joan Jones, the accompanying caption reads: “This splendid wedding party was taken by local photographer, Arnie Greaves in August 1910, and was printed from a glass negative. Elsie’s

parents, seen sitting on either side of the bride and groom, kept the Crown & Cushion Inn in Burncross, where this photograph was taken.”

The second photo was taken of William Blazey and Minnie Jepson 14 years later, and the wedding attire has changed significantly.

The caption reads: “The wedding of this Ecclesfield couple took place in September 1924. A noticeable change has occurred in the bride’s headgear. Gone are the large hats worn by Elsie Matthews. Styles had changed between the late Edwardian period and the roaring twenties. And Jessie Jepson, sitting beside the bride, definitely looks

Bicycle days In our May issue, we featured some photos sent in by Sheila Needham of her cycling days in the 1940s and 1950s. After reading the feature, Tony Needham got in touch to tell us that he was in the same cycling group.

“The reason I was so interested, is that I was a member of the Sheffield Phoenix in 1957 and became a longstanding member until 1968,” says Tony. “Though I was a reasonably successful member, I never got beyond a First Category member, though one or two of my colleagues got to Independent class, riding as semi-professionals in the early 1960s and 1970s.

“When I started cycling with the new club in the 1980s in Minehead, we had a new National Champion who joined the club and was a former multi-champion in the South East. She rode in Holland in the 1940s and 1950s and won the National 25-Mile Time Trial several times. She’s still in the club!”

windows and fitting steel beams and roof timbers, in accordance with the structural engineer’s design and building regulations. The owner is now enjoying his rooftop panorama from a beautiful new bedroom.

Another full re-roof has just taken place on a larger property in Millhouses. Old concrete tiles were removed, allowing high performance insulation to be installed, followed by Sandtoft Calderdale tiles, a cost-effective equivalent of the former covering.

This project was completed under the Competent Roofer scheme, enabling MartinBrooks to self-certify work that needs building regulation approval. A certificate of compliance is issued, without the need for a council inspection, saving the homeowner money and a significant amount of time.
