here was a time, around 40 years ago, when you’d be struggling to find anyone trick or treating on your street. And if you did, they wouldn’t be particularly dressed up. If anything they’d be wearing a black bin bag, carrying a turnip jack-o’-lantern and rattling a tin of coins.

How Halloween has changed…

Nowadays, our American cousins’ influence can be seen everywhere. On the weeks leading up to Halloween, you’ll find mountains of pumpkins in the supermarkets and rail after rail of fancy dress costumes on the high street – some of which are not even scary.

Travel back in time 2,000 years and the celebration of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. PreChristian Celts were agricultural people and were determined by the seasons.

Samhain marked the harvest at the end of summer and the beginning of the darker and colder winter season, as well as symbolising a time when the boundary between the world of the living and the dead was at its thinnest.

The Celts believed that on the night of 31 October, ghosts would visit the mortal world and large bonfires would be lit in every village to ward off any evil spirits that may also pass through.

When the Romans invaded in the decades that followed, Britain was influenced by the Christian calendar. With the arrival of Saint Augustine from Rome in 597 came All Hallows’ Day, also known as All Saints Day, when people would remember those who had died for their beliefs.

Originally celebrated on 13 May, Pope Gregory moved the All Hallows’ feast to 1 November in the 8th century. It is thought that in doing so, he was attempting to replace or merge the Celtic Samhain festival of the dead with a church-approved celebration.

The night of Samhain therefore became known as All-hallows-even, before eventually being shortened to Hallowe’en, then finally to Halloween. Traditional games such as bobbing for apples and hollowing out vegetables for lanterns from the ancient celebration of Samhain still exist today, as does the idea of dressing up in scary costumes, but in recent years the American celebration of Halloween has also heavily influenced Britain.

British immigrants may have taken their traditions over to America in the 19th century, but it was during the 20th century that the celebration changed shape again here.

The current use of pumpkins in the UK is a relatively modern trend, which along with trick or treating and un-scary fancy dress, have been adopted from our US cousins.

These games allegedly predicted who they’d marry and when. The Irish tradition was continued in America and according to the Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America, bobbing for apples was another way of predicting future romances.

There’s nothing wrong with Halloween celebrations getting bigger. On the contrary, it’s great that this celebration has survived so many years, but when 31 October is just a glorified costume party without the scary element. And when sugar-fuelled children have tantrums on strangers’ doorsteps because they can only offer a few coppers or a digestive, or don’t answer the door at all, we have lost sight of what Halloween is all about.

It shouldn’t be about scaring people into hiding or stocking up on sweets to appease the trick or treaters, it should be an inclusive celebration of our agricultural and spooky heritage. So by all means, carve up some vegetables, tell ghost stories.

Just don’t get upset with those who would rather not spend their month’s wages on party decorations. After all, it’s not as big a deal as Christmas. Well, not yet anyway.

So why do we trot out the turkey?

HANNAH SANDERS LOOKS AT CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. any people, if they were served something other than turkey on Christmas Day, would be shocked and stunned, as let’s face it, it’s a given during the festive season.

As we sit down for Christmas dinner, you may wonder how the turkey, a bird native to the America became the centrepiece of our festive meal.

Turkeys were introduced in Britain over 500 years ago, by a young traveller and Yorkshireman William Strickland, who, on his travels acquired six birds from American Indian traders, and in 1550 he was granted a coat of arms which included a “turkey-cock in his pride proper”.

Before that, the choice of meat was either goose, boar head’s and even peacock- I don’t know about you, but turkey certainly sounds more appealing.

Henry VIII was the first English King to enjoy turkey in the 16th century, although it took another 400 years before Edward VII made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas.

Turkey is now a regular feature on a great majority of British Christmas tables, although it’s only gone mainstream over the last 60 years.

However, believe it or not turkey isn’t a staple across the world, with other countries having a whole host of equally as special traditions.

Some countries celebrate Christmas on 7 January, with a whole host of customs that are different from Santa and his reindeers that we are familiar with.

Iceland has not one but 13 Santa Clauses, with the first one descending down the mountain 13 days before, leaving treats in children’s shoes. Traditionally on Christmas Eve, they will enjoy ptarmigan – a bird from the grouse family.

In Argentina, the main meal is eaten on Christmas Eve, with popular dishes including roasted pork, stuffed tomatoes, Christmas

As Christmas falls over summer in Australia, BBQ’s in the great outdoors are popular, rather than turkey and gravy.

Australians also decorate their house with ‘Christmas Bush’, a native tree with small green leaves and cream coloured flowers and Santa gives his reindeers a well-deserved break, taking kangaroos on his present delivery.

Across to Poland, where presents start arriving on 6 December as it’s St Nicholas Day. Unlike the UK, he dresses in white and gold rather than the red and white we are familiar with. On Christmas Eve, families traditionally enjoy 12 dishes including the country’s famous pierogi dumplings and oplatek – a Christmas wafer.

So, there you have it – Christmas, its food and of course Santa comes in many different variations, each one as equally special and memorable as the next, and this year when you are sitting down to tuck into your much awaited turkey you’ll know the history behind it.

Great getaway PICTURESQUE CHESHIRE MAKES FOR A VERY RELAXING BREAK, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. elaxing on plush leather seats, in front of the cast iron stove while enjoying a tipple – or two – was an ideal way to admire the rustic chandelier and array of violins balanced delicately on wooden beams along with a picture-perfect view of blooming-foliage and lush green fields, all making for a quintessentially British setting.

The Vicarage Freehouse & Rooms is nestled in the picturesque Cheshire countryside, near the River Dane. With its rustic exterior and climbing ivy, it blends perfectly into its surroundings, creating the perfect British getaway.

The hotel is run by Flat Cap Hotels and inside it’s spacious and well thought out with three comfortable lounges, contemporary outdoor dining area, games room as well as light and airy conservatory area and country house style restaurant. We didn’t want our stay to end.

The hotel has six exquisite signatures rooms, each with its own quirky touch such as a large chess board, which as competitive people, we took full advantage of. With its shabby-chic décor, including checked cushions, a deep blue chest, vintage gold mirror and finished with a delicately painted ‘do not disturb’ sign hung on the door, the room lived up to expectations as luxurious retreat from home.

The bedrooms are well-designed with luxury bathrooms to match – ours came with a huge bath and a rainmaker shower, the perfect place to unwind and put on your glad rags before experiencing The Vicarage’s restaurant.

They source their produce locally with a menu driven by the gardener’s foragers, farmers and suppliers of Cheshire, and we were blown away. Stand-out dishes included pan-seared prawns in chilli butter, Cornish crab with a chilli and lime jam, Vicarage burger and chocolate and strawberry brulée with pastry tuille. Service throughout was immaculate.

The dining area was bustling all evening, and I immediately fell for the rustic décor.

From a wall of antique mirrors, to fabric animals busts, riding hats, plush velvet seats and family crests hung on the wooden beams, I felt like I was Elizabeth Bennett enjoying a weekend away with Mr Darcy.

After a restful night’s sleep in the comfiest of beds, a hearty breakfast in the conservatory was just what we needed before taking a tenminute drive to Knutsford to wander around the many independent shops, enjoying the cobbled streets and brightly painted facades, before lunch at another of the family-run group’s hotels – The Courthouse.

Rooftop Gardens, and the refurbishment emulates the building’s history and grandeurstyle.

Sitting where the judge used to reside, looking down on the defendant – now the fully-stocked bar framed with towering plants – was a fun experience whilst we enjoyed a luxurious lunch. Stand-out dishes included Atlantic prawn and avocado sandwich, chocolate tart with caramel gel and Tatin with pineapple and caramelised puff pastry. Service was outstanding and we were treated to a tour of the grand building.

The lush surroundings of The Vicarage make for the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a peaceful and memorable weekend away, whilst enjoying the close-by historic town of Knutsford with its iconic Gaskell Tower.

Join the Crewe HISTORIC NORTHUMBERLAND HAS PLENTY TO OFFER, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR – PERFECT FOR A SHORT STOPOVER. at next to a huge fireplace, surrounded by stone walls and a wooden beamed ceiling, sipping ale from tankards, this could easily be an iconic scene from Game of Thrones.

But we were not at Castle Black on the icy northern border of a fictional land, we were at Lord Crewe Arms, on the border of Northumberland.

Built in 1165, this hotel was originally part of Blanchland Abbey, home to the White Canons of the Roman Catholic Order. These monks famously dressed in white and as blanche is French for white, the village became known as Blanchland.

This building was originally the Abbot’s lodge, guest house, kitchens and dining room, and the gardens served as cloisters for the monks of the Northumbrian moors.

The abbey was dissolved in 1539 and was bought by the Radcliffes, then the Forster family, before being taken over by Lord Nathaniel Crewe in 1708. And if you like a good ghost story, they say Dorothy Forster still walks the abbey to this day.

Back in the land of the living, hotel guests and visitors alike can enjoy the Lord Crewe Arms’ Crypt Bar, the cosy adjoining Derwent room, or sit next to the afore mentioned grand fireplace – just the thing in these colder months.

Upstairs is the more formal Bishops dining room, but you can eat in the casual

surroundings of the lower fireplace room if you wish.

The evening we arrived, my partner enjoyed an Isle of Wight salad with Langley Farm cottage cheese to start and a juicy flat iron steak for his main, while I had chilled, white gazpacho, followed by tender roast suckling pig porchetta with whipped polenta and spinach.

Back in our room, I relished the chance to dip into the deep bathtub and cosy up to the wood burner with a cup of tea, before settling into a sumptuous double bed.

The next morning we gazed out of the dining room window at the gorgeous gardens, whilst eating breakfast. I had eggs royale with salmon that had been smoked and cured on the premises. The hotel is also proud to grow its own vegetables and has a biomass shed to generate its own energy.

And it’s not just a great place for a leisurely stay. There are also brilliant facilities in the adjoining Gatehouse for business conferences, containing a meeting room, sitting room and kitchen.

Once we had checked out, the receptionist suggested several walks, but the bottom line was, “Whichever direction you walk in, you’ll get to the North Pennines!”

With Derwent Reservoir just a couple of country miles up the road, the Crewe is wellplaced for sailing and water sports, as well as cycling, fishing and shooting. It’s also a great base for day trips to the Beamish Museum

and Hadrian’s Wall, or even for a shopping trip to Newcastle.

On our walk, we came across a chicken crossing the road – a sign we were truly in the country, and the ruins of the old Shildon Engine House – a symbol of the area’s industrial past.

Back in the village, we perused the traditional sweets and the homemade cards and gifts at a local shop, before going to the Monk Tearoom, an old school room-turnedcafé, for a pot of tea before returning home.

So if you want to feel like the king of the castle, venture over the North Pennines or explore the nearby museums, Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland is a cosy and comfortable home from home. What’s more, they have been named ‘Inn of the Year 2018’ by the Good Pub Guide.

MADE IN SHEFFIELD, LUCY MAY LINGERIE IS BRINGING BACK THE FEEL-GOOD FACTOR TO WOMEN ALL OVER THE CITY AND BEYOND. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. ho would have thought that wearing the right underwear could give you a whole new outlook on life? But this is the message local entrepreneur and director of luxury lingerie company, Lucy May, is spreading throughout Sheffield and beyond.

Over the past three years, Natalie Mosley from High Green has been getting to know what women want from their under garments and the answer came loud and clear; luxurious lingerie that provides a great fit and is comfortable to wear.

“I think if you’ve got great fit and comfort, then you have the feel-good factor and that’s the key message I am portraying,” confirms Natalie. “Discover A New You is the hashtag I am using because that says everything. You can feel so different when you are wearing the right lingerie and it looks good.

Though Lucy May was only launched in June this year, the brand’s roots go back much further. Natalie had always been interested in the female form. She had studied art and design at college, but wanting to broaden her business sense, Natalie decided to undertake a four-year degree in fashion marketing. @PulseRMC

She was then seconded to a Dutch fashion and trend agency, before being poached by a Dutch womenswear company. It was here that she “got a new head on her shoulders” and really got to know the industry. Natalie returned to the UK, but still continued to travel the world for work.

Then three years ago, with over 24 years of experience under her belt, she decided to go it alone. She realised the time had come to get a work-life balance and do something for herself. Whilst consulting for various brands, she did intensive research to figure out what was missing in the lingerie industry and what she could offer. However, the inspiration for the brand had always been clear.

“The name Lucy May originates from my grandmother. She was a life inspiration for me. I grew up with her and she was very iconic, loved her music and was a real woman in every aspect.

“She was fascinated when I was managing the Katie Price License for lingerie, swimwear and nightwear. She always told me to one day have my own brand. Her attitude to life and the idea of fighting for what you believe in spurred me on.”

What makes the brand all the more inspiring is that it is slowly, but surely putting Sheffield on the business map. Made In Sheffield is an initiative intended to encourage locally-based companies in the producer sector to utilise the strengths of the Sheffield brand. Made famous internationally as a mark of origin and quality on the city’s manufactured products, the initiative has given Lucy May their seal of approval.

“Made In Sheffield vetted the company and now I have the license from them. I’m proud of that because I originate from Sheffield and I stand for precision-made quality. I feel strongly about giving something back to Sheffield.

“The key element is to get British brands out there. There’s a lot of British brands, but they are produced in China, Sri Lanka and so on. So we are bringing manufacturing back to Yorkshire, creating affordable products that can be exported.”

Business Sheffield are helping local entrepreneurs onto their feet and have been

another huge source of support for Natalie.

“Christina Lima Trindade is their growth advisor and has been a great mentor to me.

That’s important when you are on your own.

Suddenly you have someone to talk to and advise you. It’s opened me up to how many other people are in my situation.

“They’ve all got the same ethos; they are all looking at producing themselves. It’s nice to be in a community of start-ups and making things happen. It gives you a real zest.”

The ‘dragon’s den’

Legends of Wharncliffe WITH TALES OF TREASURE, DRAGONS AND KNIGHTS IN SHINING ARMOUR, WHARNCLIFFE AND WANTLEY ARE HOME TO MYTH AND LEGEND.

ith Halloween fast approaching, it’s a great time to rediscover some local folklore. Medieval legend, The Dragon of Wantley, is one of the best-known, but the exact date and origin of the story is unknown.

In the ballad True Revelation of the dreadful combat fought between More of More Hall and the Dragon of Wantley, reprinted in Bishop Percy’s Reliques of Ancient English Poetry in 1767, it is said that the monster with “seven heads and fourteen eyes” would wait in its den at Wharncliffe Crags near Stocksbridge before emerging to eat “poor children three, as one would eat an apple.”

David writes: “Flying dragons, treasure and magical wells are the necessary ingredients of classic dragon folklore and they all play their parts in the best-known surviving South Yorkshire legend. This was connected from ancient times once again with the valley of the River Don, for here haunted of yore the fabulous Dragon of Wantley.”

The hero of the story is simply named More of More Hall. He was said to have travelled to Sheffield, known as early as the 16th century for its steel, for a sword before

defeating the dragon “with a carefully-aimed blow.”

The third photo is from the same book (courtesy of Sheffield City Libraries) and shows a painting by Sir Edward Poynter of the dragon’s death, which once hung at Wortley Hall. However, the painting was destroyed during the Sheffield Blitz in 1940.

But this isn’t the only piece of art that depicts the myth.

David adds: “Traditions about the dragon linger in the neighbourhood of Wharncliffe.

In Sheffield’s new Town Hall, over the entrance arch is a carving in marble depicting a knight in armour killing a dragon with his sword. The guidebook states that the carving

relates ‘not to St George, but to a local legend of the Dragon of Wharncliffe. The First Earl of Wharncliffe (1827-99), who bought More Hall in 1862, appears to have had more than a passing interest in the legend connected with his ancestral lands.”

GLC gets power upgrade Pricing has been announced for the Mercedes AMG GLC 63 and 63 S in Coupe and SUV form.

Available now, prices start from £68,920 for the GLC 63 4MATIC+ SUV. The even more powerful S variant costs £75,670. As well as the SUV model, the sleek new GLC 63 4MATIC+ Coupe is also available for £71,410 and the S model for £78,160.

Both models come with a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol engine, mated to an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed sports transmission. Non-S variants produce 476hp and 650Nm of torque, and can sprint from 0-62 mph in just four seconds. The GLC 63 S has an output of 510hp and 700Nm – it can reach 62 mph from standstill in 3.8 seconds.
