Young artists’ land art lines the Tour de Yorkshire route Two budding artists from a north Sheffield school have had their eye catching designs created into stunning land art for the Tour de Yorkshire.

The annual three-day race started in Bridlington on April 28 and finished on April 30 at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge. The owners of Fox Valley, Dransfield Properties Ltd, organised a competition to create some stunning pieces of land art to line the route.

The two winners were Isobelle McGrail, (11), and Archie Eratt, (10) both from Deepcar St John’s Junior School, whose designs were created along the route by land artists from Fields of Vision.

Archie designed an umbrella in tribute to Samuel Fox, who developed the Paragon frame umbrella in Stocksbridge in the 1850s.

Stocksbridge Golf Club, Isobelle designed a fox on a bike, which can been seen at Underbank Reservoir in Stocksbridge.

The pupils won pictures of their artwork, as well as vouchers. Stocksbridge Golf Club also gave them both a club membership.

Book your stall for Chapeltown Park Gala Chapeltown Park Gala is on Saturday 8 July – and now is the time for stallholders to get involved.

Thanks to funding from Celebrate England (part of the Big Lottery), the event organised by Friends of Chapeltown Park will include lots of fantastic free attractions including gokarts, penalty shoot-out, fresh fruit kebabs, coconut shy and many more.

Stalls cost £10 and you will need to bring your own small gazebo (3m x 3m max) and a table. You will be able to unload at the site and then park at the old playground.

Car boot sales at Paces

CHILDREN HAVE AN EGG-CELLENT EASTER It was a gorgeously sunny day when crowds of children came out for Friend’s of Chapeltown’s Easter egg trail around the park. Children also enjoyed making 80 rabbits and 60 daffodils in the craft marquee. Friends of Chapeltown Park would like to thanks all their volunteers for helping to make the day such a huge success!

Sixth formers take a fact-finding trip to scooter park Business students from Longley Park Sixth Form College got the chance to visit the UK’s first self- balancing scooter park in Ecclesfield, Sheffield.

The educational trip to Swegway Park was to gain vital knowledge about the business and for students to implement what they learned during the visit into what they had been previously taught in their A Level Business course.

The informative visit included a half an hour business talk with the manager and owner, Tom Pyecroft and an hour operating the superb swegways. Swegways are a selfbalancing two-wheeled board, more commonly referred to as a hover board, which is a portable, rechargeable, battery-powered scooter.

record one million fans turned out to watch the epic finale to the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire, which saw Serge Pauwels claim the stage and overall victory at the finish in Fox Valley on Sunday 30 April.

Not since the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ has Yorkshire experienced such a huge figure on a single day of racing, and that bumper crowd on Sunday helped ensure the third edition was officially the biggest one yet with overall attendances rising from two million to 2.2 million year on year.

The finish line was at Fox Valley in north Sheffield – a new retail destination which opened in June last year.

Entire communities turned out on the roadside to witness the peloton pass through as they traversed the 194.5km route from Bradford to Fox Valley, Sheffield, and each of the day’s eight categorised climbs were also packed with masses of cheering, colourful and

enthusiastic fans. The parcours was also lined with incredible, eye-catching land art as pictures of Yorkshire were beamed to a record 180 countries globally.

Spectators were treated to exciting action as well, with Pauwels breaking clear on the tough concluding loop and he was joined by Dimension Data team-mate Omar Fraile before the race concluded in Stocksbridge.

The duo then pressed home their advantage with Pauwels leading Fraile over the finish line to seal the biggest victory of his career and a 1-2 for his team who also topped the Doncaster Sheffield Airport and FlyBe Team Classification. Jonathan Hivert (Direct Énergie) rounded out the podium six seconds later.

Thousands of people watched the dramatic finish from Fox Valley. Earlier in the day, more than 4,000 cyclists took part in the amateur sportive which started and finished at Fox Valley.

The centre is owned and managed by Dransfield Properties Ltd, which has its head office there. The managing director Mark Dransfield made the presentation to the winning rider. The company’s charity cycle team also took part in the sportive.

Mark said: “The Tour de Yorkshire has been a fantastic event to be involved with and it was an extremely proud day for everyone

who has worked so hard on making the finish here at Fox Valley such a great success.

“We hosted an event for the Tour de France Grande Depart in 2014 and this weekend’s Tour de Yorkshire finish definitely brought the crowds out again and showed what a fantastic part of Yorkshire we have here in north Sheffield.

“This has been a real team effort working with all the local communities who gave such a fantastic welcome to the riders.”

After the stage, Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Sir Gary Verity was glowing as he reflected on another hugely successful Tour, and reserved special praise for the tremendous Yorkshire public who made 2017 another record-breaking year.

He said: “The last three days have been utterly unforgettable. I realise I keep saying it, but I could not be prouder of this great county we call home. One million roadside fans on a single day is a truly phenomenal figure and there are barely any week-long races in the sport that can command 2.2 million spectators, let alone a three-day event like ours.

“When I drove the route today there were smiling faces everywhere I looked and ‘The Yorkshire Terrier’ more than lived up to its billing as a stage to remember.

“I’d like to congratulate Serge on a hardfought victory, and thank all the riders, partners and public who made this the best edition of the Tour de Yorkshire yet.”

Stage and race winner Serge Pauwels said: “I’ve cycled all around the world and my favourite three crowds are for the Classics in Belgium, those in the Basque Country, and here in Yorkshire.

“The support today was incredible. Sheila’s cycling salad days TOUR DE YORKSHIRE SPARKS MEMORIES OF THE SHEFFIELD PHOENIX CYCLING CLUB IN THE FORTIES AND FIFTIES.

fter last month’s Tour de Yorkshire inspired us to dig up some cycling-themed photos from the past, Sheila Needham from Grenoside kindly sent in some snaps of her cycling in her younger years.

The photo above was taken of Sheila (on the right, wearing white socks) taking part in a grass track race in Blyth in 1950. She was a member of the Sheffield Phoenix Cycling Club, who would compete against clubs from all over the country. Sheila was living on Derbyshire Lane near Graves Park at the time.

“It was quite a big organisation with lots of talent,” she says.

“Laycocks Sports Club on Archer Road is where we used to meet.

1948 to 1958 were wonderful days. I used to go to train at a track in Chesterfield and remember days in Graves Park.

“The mining community was a big part of setting up the races, which usually took place on bank holidays.”

The second photo (top right) is of Sheila cycling up Baslow Hill (still a popular cycling route) in 1949, and the final photo (bottom right) sees Sheila marshalling in Blyth with her cycling friend Dorothy Simpson in 1950. Dorothy was from a keen cycling family, so her love for cycling seemed inevitable. However, Sheila’s appreciation for the sport seemed to come from nowhere.

“It was just me who loved cycling. My family weren’t bothered. I’m now in my 84th year and I don’t think there are many of us left. I’ve not seen Dorothy for about 40 years!”

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced gardener, you’ll know that spring is one of the busiest times and the need to prepare for the upcoming months is crucial.

Here are some top tips to help you.

Get rid of weeds

As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to feel alive again. The weeds that you dread to see will start appearing, along with ivy and brambles too. It is best to get rid of them as soon as possible.

After tending to your garden with all the general after-winter care, it’s time to start focussing on what style you’re going to go for this year. 2017 is full of new and exciting garden trends, from colour blocking and natural materials to vertical gardening - there’s something to suit every taste.

Keep it trim

Colour Hit

Start pruning dead, overcrowded branches or stems.

Ornamental grasses, perennials, evergreens along with rose bushes and shrubs need pruning in early spring.

This involves creating blocks of colour, whether it’s with a painted area behind a planter, coloured tiles or even a solid coloured outdoor rug. Living blocks of colour are on trend too; greens, browns and reds are easy to achieve by using plants.

Use clever plant selections to get brighter colours such as pinks or yellows. Also pick plants that change

colour seasonally, to give your garden a fresh lease of life every season.

Light up

Outdoor lighting is not only being used to highlight horticulture but, also to serve as mood lighting for outdoor events. Invest in some LED fairy or solar powered lights and create a walkway through your garden or, simply decorate trees and bushes to add some sparkle.

Vertical Gardening

With garden space at a premium, plants are headed the same way as architecture; vertically.

Taller plants have become increasingly captivating, serving as a great alternative for urban gardeners. Wall planting is set to be a big feature of 2017, so invest in some hanging shrubbery and create your own wonder-wall.

Mow your lawn

This is the job you’ve probably been avoiding- as it really isn’t the most fun. But as the rain is easing off, it’s time to break out the lawn mower and give your grass a much needed haircut.

The Urban Jungle Smaller houses, more people renting and a passion for seventies kitsch has led to a trend for more indoor plants. It’s easy to create a small indoor garden with wall hangings, shelves and terrariums, adding a new lease of life into your home which is easy to care for. Look out for cacti as they are set to be the 2017 trend for indoor plants.

POPULAR VEGETABLES TO GROW Growing your own vegetables can be very beneficial to cost and saving. If you’re thinking about growing crops, the middle of April is the best time to do so. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying dwarf selections or patio vegetables. However make sure you weed before planting, as if not the area can become overcrowded.

Carrots

Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. Be careful not to crush the foliage, as this can attract carrot flies - putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this.

Potatoes

When the stems are 23cm high, it’s essential that you start ‘earthing up’; dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. This is a must as it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light which causes potatoes to become green in colour and poisonous.

Leaf Lettuce

Thin seedlings when leaves start to appear, proceed until the plants are 30cm apart. Water the plants when the soil is dry in the mornings. Watch out for slugs and sparrows; make a barrier to put around them.

Back to Basics

Instead of the clean-cut modern look, landscapers are going back to the DIY image of the 1970s. Expect more natural materials, running rivers and wooden décor this year.

To create a stress-free natural look try using repurposed old wood, driftwood, plant pots, or even create a rockery.

Plants to look out for

Old and new mash-up

English marigold Bright and cheery annual plants that will bloom early summer. They are easy to care for and available in dwarf and tall varieties. Plant in full sun and rich soil.

It isn’t about choosing one style and sticking to it this year. Try bringing both traditional and modern elements into your garden to make it more eyecatching and unique. Pair handmade artisan wares next to furniture with a modern design or in front of a painted wall.

New plants on the scene

Zinnia Last year it was a calendula, along with the mountain pepper and Golden Duchess. This year gardeners are keen to find plants that can stand up to the tough weather. Fleuroselect have mentioned that 2017 will be the year of the zinnia, bean and begonias.

After preparing our garden for springtime, it’ll be time to think about making it colourful in time for the glorious summer sun. Here are some popular flowers for this year.

Zinnia One of the easiest plants to grow and bloom heavily.

Plant in full sun and rich fertile soil. When the seedlings reach three inches tall, thin them so they’re six to eighteen inches apart.

Comfortable seating

Gone are the days of hard wooden benches, or metal chairs, now it is time for comfortable outdoor seating. Invest in some colourful @PulseRMC

If you want something more unusual, try a swinging round seat or daybed.

Hyperlocalism

Plants or vegetables with a local connection are set to see a boom. Look at plants native to your local area and take inspiration from nearby woods, parks or hedgerow. Talk to a garden centre about what would suit your garden.

Outdoor kitchens

Garden kitchens go perfectly with outdoor seating. BBQ are not the only thing outside anymore, gradually fridges, work surfaces, sinks and fire pits have made their way outside and this trend will only continue to grow.

White plants

White plants are more of a returning trend than a new one. The flowers glow at night, which will complement any outdoor seating.

Try water growing vegetables

Having a constant supply of fresh organic vegetables is difficult if you have limited garden space. Try putting the roots of various vegetables including celery, green onion and cabbage in a water bowl and watch them regrow.

To the moon and back DS Automobiles has created a special limited edition run of its popular DS4 CROSSBACK just in time for the start of the summer.

Called the CROSSBACK Moondust, to differentiate it from the rest of the DS4 range, it gets an exclusive matt platinum grey paint finish, a set of 18-inch gloss black ‘Brisbane’ alloy wheels and inside it gets Basalt Black leather upholstery.

Two engines will be available: the PureTech 130 petrol available with a six-speed manual gearbox and the BlueHDi 120 diesel available with sixspeed manual and automatic transmission.

FULL FAT FIAT The Fiat Fullback Cross – a stylish new version of the brand’s pick-up – has made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
