EDITOR’S MESSAGE: s Easter approaches and spring slowly begins to make an appearance, our thoughts have turned to holidays in the sun and planning our next escape.

In this month’s Pulse, we look at two very different adventures. If you’re a walking-in-the-Lakes kinda person, my trip to Kendal (page 26) could provide the ideal inspiration for your next UK getaway.

After tackling one of the area’s many mountains, it was the gentler side of this beauty spot that really took my breath away.

At the other end of the scale, Burncross student Ashleigh Revitt’s charity trip to India was a rather more challenging endeavour.

Helping orphans and widows with the aid of her auntie’s charity, World Christian Ministries, she enjoyed an enriching experience that will stay with her for a lifetime. Read all about it on page 46.

With more of their quality eco-friendly homes due for completion, Fenwood Estates are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. any Pulse readers will be familiar with Fenwood Estates. Barnsley Sixth Form College welcomes Ecclesfield pupils Barnsley Sixth Form College welcomed Year 11 pupils from Ecclesfield School for a GCSE revision conference. The event gave the pupils the opportunity to take part in a range of workshops and activities to prepare them for their forthcoming GCSE exams.

The day included tours of the facilities at the new £18million Sixth Form College, opened in January, which were led by current A Level students who previously attended Ecclesfield School.

Bumfords apprentice given permanent role Bumfords have employed Luke Dale on a permanent position after his successful year-long apprenticeship.

Luke, 19, from Wombwell, will now work within Bumfords’ busy online warehouse picking and packing thousands of orders a week for despatch around the globe.

Luke said: “This is a great opportunity for me. I have learned a tremendous amount and really enjoy coming to work. The wide range of products we sell is really interesting.”

Managing director, Neil Bumford, said: “We are really lucky to have Luke on board. He is a great member of the team, he gets on well with everybody and works really hard. He has never been late or had a day off ill.

He is the kind of person that any business would love to have.”

The company has also unveiled a new logo, which features the original colours of black and orange, first introduced when the company started in the late 1960s. Chapeltown charity spring fair Local crafter Marie Elizabeth (formerly of Marie’s Tea Room in Chapeltown) and her twin sister Sarah will be hosting the Chapeltown Charity Spring Fair at the Scout Hut on Burncross Road on Saturday 9 April, 10am-3pm. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Sheffield Helipad Appeal for Northern General Hospital.

LAKELAND LIFESTYLE From gruelling hikes and outdoor pursuits to relaxing cruises and quaint villages, the Lake District has it all. Just make sure you’re prepared for all weathers. By Stephanie Burns. he step-by-step map stuck to my sweaty palm said it would take 40 minutes to reach the summit of Wansfell Pike, and I’d be damned if I was going to miss that target. As my agile partner hot-footed it up the mountain like a graceful mountain goat, I quietly cursed my short legs and struggled to keep up. Thank god we hadn’t attempted Wansfell’s scarier neighbour, Scafell Pike.

The only thing that kept me going was knowing that, once we eventually reached the top, the 360-degree view would be worth every gruelling step. ‘You have a clear view over Windermere,’ the map said, ‘coming round to the west you can see: the Coniston fells, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, the Langdale hills and then the Fairfield Horseshoe. Closer to you is Red Screes.’ It even told us to look out for the Yorkshire Dales and Morecambe Bay. I couldn’t wait to play spot the landmark while munching on my well-deserved Kendal mint cake.

Of course, I should have taken into account the reality of our location. On reaching the top, we were met not with far-reaching views of the North West’s beauty spots but rather a sky full of dark grey clouds and bitingly cold gusts of wind that threatened to send us tumbling right back down the gravelly path from whence we came. Ah, Great British weather, you cruel thing.

We had begun our journey on that cloudy Saturday in higher spirits, with a 20-minute trip on an open-decked Windermere Lake Cruise (£3.95pp oneway, www.windermere-lakecruises.co.uk) from Brockhole to Waterhead Jetty. From there, we’d set off through Ambleside – it’s worth taking a minor detour to check out the hidden 70ft waterfall of Stockghyll Force along the way – before scaling Wansfell and then descending down Nanny Lane into Troutbeck, a quaint little village with a couple of good

pubs, a nice picnic spot outside the Post Office, and some great examples of traditional Lake District architecture.

After winding our way down several green lanes and bridleways, we arrived back at Brockhole (www.brockhole.co.uk) four hours after setting off for a muchneeded drink and an obligatory mooch around the gift shop. There was much more to do and explore – an adventure playground, treetop treks, mini golf, pony rides, bike hire, boat hire and exhibitions – but there was something even more appealing waiting back at our hotel.

BEST ORGANIC OPTION Montezuma’s organic milk chocolate button egg 250g, £9.99 With adorable bunny packaging and a generous portion of buttons, this egg made a great first impression. On the downside, the thickness of the buttons meant they didn’t instantly melt in the mouth, but the chocolate egg was redeeming with a moreish light, creamy texture. If it’s organic and British you’re after, this is your egg.

BEST FOR STYLISH FRIENDS Tesco Finest milk chocolate square egg 300g, £8 The contemporary design was an instant hit with the panel and the contents did not disappoint either. The thickness of this egg made it difficult to break into but – oh boy – it was definitely worth the effort. With a creamy taste similar to Galaxy chocolate, this stylish egg was a real hit and is something any milk chocolate lover would be delighted to receive.

With milk chocolate making up one half of the egg and a dark caramel chocolate for the other, it is also ideal for those in search of variety. Packed with chewy caramel throughout and sprinkled with chunky fudge pieces, self control is needed to avoid overindulgence.

BEST FOR WHITE CHOCOLATE LOVERS Nestlé Milkybar milk and cookies 162g, £3 Any fan of white chocolate will enjoy the sumptuous creaminess of this and the cookie pieces add a welcome crunchy texture. The shell also wasn’t too thick, making it ideal for any parents looking to limit their children’s chocolate intake over Easter.

BEST FOR DARK CHOCOLATE LOVERS Green and Black’s organic dark 70 per cent 165g ,£6.59 For those who find milk or white just a little too sweet this is an ideal alternative. While the panel agreed the chocolate was high quality and featured a nice strong flavour, the accompanying fruity fragrance caused a split of opinions. Some thought it added another dimension, while others found it overpowering. Nevertheless, this is an intense indulgence with the bonus of being organic.

From wartime variety concerts to its final days as ‘The Bug Hut’, readers share their memories of Ecclesfield Cinema.

END OF AN INSTITUTION rs M Swann (nee Hodges) of Elm Rise in Chapeltown sent us a beautiful handwritten letter recalling her first memories of Ecclesfield Cinema, which was featured in the January edition.

She said:“I was about seven and I used to go on a Saturday afternoon. It cost one penny and we had a bag of sweets given to us at the door. You went in the side entrance.

“A few years later my uncle Jack Hodges was made manager, his wife Dorothy was in the pay-box, my sister Beryl was the upstairs usherette, and my dad Bob Hodges was the night time projectionist.

“Once a month in wartime, a variety concert was held to raise money for the war effort. All the performers played free of charge.

One night during an air raid Uncle Jack came out front of the cinema and said anyone who wished to stay could remain. We all went down to the cellar and sat round the massive boiler (what a place to pick).

“The night of VE Day Tommy Parkinson had a small band and he came and played all night on the top step of the cinema. People came from all around and danced till the early hours of the morning at the front of the cinema.”

We also received an essay on the cinema from Nigel Womersley of Mill Road, Ecclesfield, which he wrote several years ago. In the piece, he includes great detail about the people who worked there, including his cousin’s husband – the very same Jack Hodges.

Nigel describes Jack and Dorothy, who lived in a flat between the stalls and the balcony, as always looking the part and never being afraid of hard work. He said:“They thought nothing of taking the stage curtains down after the Saturday night showing was over, and washing them by hand in the cellar. They were then laid out by the boiler to dry. Dorothy would then iron them and they would be back in place for the Monday evening opening. What a job!

“At one time Jack was a familiar figure in the village, riding his cycle – complete with ladder, paste bucket and posters to display forthcoming attractions! He was a showman you see, never missing an opportunity to promote the cinema house.”

Nigel also provides a detailed history of the cinema, which opened on New Year’s Day 1921 and cost £15,000 to build. The cinema closed in February 1931 but reopened with ‘talkies’ the following March – the first one being King of Jazz.“There was no shortage of films as the cinema house was used as a store for films

due to be shown in the city, as its cellar was an ideal ‘safe place’,” said Nigel.“During the Thursday night of the Sheffield Blitz (December 12 1940), films were shown until 6am the following morning.”

In 1947, the cinema was sold to Essoldo – owned by the Sheckman family – who also bought Capitol at Lane Top and The Forum at Southey Green.“Television was taking a firm grip on the entertainment scene,” said Nigel.“This, coupled with ripped seating, shabby decorations, and lack of heating, caused attendances to drop. What was once a fine building, with potted palms either side of the stage, was now nicknamed ‘The Bug Hut’.”

The decline continued until the final showing, The Young Lions starring Marlon Brando and Dean Martin, on Saturday 7 February 1959 – at which Nigel was present. He was among an audience of just 30.“During the interval, the stage curtain was raised and a hand written slide was projected on to the screen thanking patrons for their attendance during the years. That was all. A village institution had collapsed and that was how it said goodbye!”

The building stood until it was bulldozed in June 1971.

Ron Pell of Smithy Carr Close in Chapeltown rang to request our help in obtaining a photograph of his older sister, Gladys Beever’s, first home. On Gladys’ birth certificate from 1933 her address is listed as 1 The Huts, Arundel Road, Chapeltown, which would have been opposite the entrance to Asda if it was still standing today. In 1936, the family moved to a house just off Burncross Road, near the old Hallamshire Maternity Hospital, and The Huts were demolished. Broken leg? Would you like to see a tree surgeon?

Words: David Kaye ’ve nothing against tree surgeons. They are great… for sorting out trees. The notion of having a leg sorted out by anyone other than a medical surgeon would seem ridiculous.

Why, then, are some people prepared to do this with education?

I have had a few enquiries recently which have started me thinking about real value for money and the nature of professional skills.

Perhaps education doesn’t hold the same mystery and awe as medicine because of our own journey through school, coupled with an approach from some of our politicians that anyone can teach.

Since 2012 it has been possible for mainstream academies to employ teachers without Qualified Teacher Status. The idea behind this policy is so academies can hire ‘great linguists, computer scientists, engineers and other specialists’. Indeed, people often get mixed up thinking that if you can do something very well, you can teach it.

I remember a mathematics lecturer. He had a Doctorate degree and was a mathematical superman, but he was incapable of coming down to the level of mere mortals. He couldn’t relate to their needs.

The dangers with this anyone-can-teach approach become more apparent with primary and lower secondary education.

Most of us have a good grasp of the curriculum content. Does this mean we would be able to teach it?

The question is, would you allow an unqualified doctor to examine you, let alone operate on you? Should it be acceptable, or advisable, for unqualified teachers to practise?

The tuition industry is also becoming much larger. Some tutors are highly qualified and experienced teachers, such as those at Kip McGrath. They also work within an organisation where standards are monitored and controlled.

Other tutors may be good graduates, but have no training in the art of teaching. I have also come across ‘trained tutors’ who possess neither degree nor Qualified Teacher Status.

We have freedom of choice, but when it comes to investing in your child’s education, what is the best choice? Take the cheap approach and hope the tree surgeon fixes the correct leg, or get the job done properly first time?

A summer spent helping people struggling with poverty has given Ashleigh valuable experience that she hopes to use to inspire others.

MISSION TO INDIA ach summer, the cities and beaches of the world are packed with post-A Level students letting their hair down and celebrating the end of school. Whether heading straight into work or onward to university in September, this final blowout is a liberating experience and, for many, a significant step towards independence.

One Burncross student who decided to break with this tradition last July was 18-year-old Ashleigh Revitt. While her friends interrailed across Europe, she chose to embark on an adventure with a more benevolent twist.

Traveling to the South Indian state of Coimbatore with World Christian Ministries (WCM), she spent two weeks working with widows and orphans living in extreme poverty. The Devon-based charity is run by Rachel David – a cousin of Ashleigh’s mum – and her husband Andrew, who have been directors of WCM since 2004.

Since Rachel’s dad Roy established the charity in 1980, they have been providing education, food, healthcare and employment opportunities to some of India, Africa and The Philippines’ poorest communities.

Together with Rachel, Andrew and their daughter Hannah, Ashleigh arrived in India and, after a short rest, threw herself into work. “We literally landed, had three hours sleep and then went out to do a kids’ fun day,” she laughs.

This was just one of the activities Ashleigh took part in. WCM have a number of children’s homes in Coimbatore and Bangalore, which take care of hundreds of impoverished children, and most days they would visit the homes to check everything was OK and deliver some much-loved treats.

“On our way to a home we would buy toys and cakes because the children never have cake and they love it,” explains Ashleigh.

“Some of the children chose a dance and Hannah is a good singer so she would sing them a song. Then we played with them and made sure they were happy. Without WCM, these children would be on the streets – there’s no funding for them because there’s so little money there.”

The same is true for the widows who are helped by WCM. One 96-year-old, who Ashleigh met last summer, worked until she was

92 and was only paid in the rice she swept up from a factory floor. Thanks to WCM, she managed to finish work and lead a far happier life.

Ashleigh now sponsors one of the children, a young girl whose blind parents dropped her off at the home because they could no longer look after her. Along with the rest of the kids, who are aged between four and 18, she’s receiving nutritional meals, learning valuable life skills, attending school and learning English.

The children move out when they’re 18 but WCM is helping women beyond this age through their ESTA and Women of Worth (WOW) projects. ESTA funds and supports young women through university, and WOW helps women struggling with poverty, abuse and exploitation by providing them with access to education, food, medical care and business enterprise.

Despite the basic living conditions, many of the women and children – to Ashleigh’s great surprise – were in high spirits.

“They’re all so happy, inviting and welcoming, it’s just unbelievable,” she says. “I love travelling and seeing how other people are as I think you see things differently. You see not only how different the world is, but also how different the people are. A lot of people [in the Rachel with the Esta UK] complain about the littlest students thing and then you see what little others have and think ‘how can we complain’?”

Ashleigh funded the trip herself – flights alone were £700 – but called on the help of the community to raise money so she could buy gifts for the children.

She received donations from customers at The Wortley Arms where she worked as a waitress, The Wharncliffe Arms in Burncross organised a raffle, Ecclesfield Primary School (where Ashleigh’s mum works) held a non-uniform day and bake sale, her fellow Notre Dame sixth formers donated to the cause and Fletchers Bakery donated goodies for a bake sale. By the time she jetted off to India, she’d raised more than £1,000.

And the fundraising didn’t end there. Constantly posting their daily activities on social media, they helped to spread the word of their trip even further. “We were in a widow’s house one day and she had no mattress, just a metal frame bed,” Ashleigh recalls.

“While we were there we filmed a video and posted it on Facebook and within half an hour someone offered to buy her a mattress.”

Away from her charitable duties, Ashleigh experienced another taste of life in India – elephant spotting and checking out the local customs. “It’s different to what I thought as it’s more built up. The slums weren’t as bad as I expected and there are cows everywhere, even in the middle of the street. It’s also very loud; every driver beeps their horn just to let other people know they’re there.”

Ashleigh is now nearing the end of her first year at Sheffield Hallam University, where she is studying primary teaching. Her WCM adventure last summer gave her invaluable experience that she knows will help her in future.

“I now know first-hand what it’s like to help people in poverty,” she says. “Hopefully, when I’m a teacher, I’ll be able to inspire my students to do something similar with a charity like WCM.”
