Quality made to order DAVD J MARTIN’S BEAUTIFUL BESPOKE FURNITURE COMBINES CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL. n these days of mass produced furniture, it’s good to know there is a well-established business dedicated to creating beautiful bespoke, handmade pieces for your kitchen, bedroom, study or lounge. Not only does David J Martin have a stunning showroom, customers are also amazed to find their huge on-site workshop on the bottom floor, meaning everything is done in-house, enabling owner David to guarantee high quality at every stage of the process. There’s a team of eight, highly trained carpenters working on kitchen cabinets and islands, bedroom furniture including wardrobes, desks and study furniture, each one made unique to order. David himself is a carpenter by trade, training for years before completing a degree in the subject. He ensures his staff are trained to the highest standard, resulting in the finest quality products. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd,” said David. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to making our own cutters for producing mouldings.” This means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs.
16 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
In the David J Martin showroom, a stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. They cater to all styles, from traditional to modern handless kitchens, while cocktail cabinets are particularly on trend right now. After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors. For those customers undertaking full refurbishment of their home, David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work, as well as building furniture. For David it’s all about creating a high quality customer experience, whether the job be big or small. One call to David J Martin could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity – David only employs the best tradesmen. In the company’s 37 years of trading, David @PulseRMC
J Martin has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction. The company is highly regarded for their customer and after-sales service, ensuring that every customer is a happy one and fixing any problems with their furniture, whether that be two weeks or ten years down the line. Bumford wins regional title in nationwide heating competition Barnsley’s Bumford Heating Limited, has been announced as North East and Yorkshire’s Best Heating Installer 2018. The entry was commended for its exceptional professionalism, numerous examples of going above and beyond for customers and an outstanding level of technical capability during a particularly challenging installation. The Heating Installer Awards recognises the outstanding and essential work completed by UK plumbers and heating installers every day. In March, a panel of experts met to judge the hundreds of entries submitted from across the UK, in order to decide the regional winners. All regional winners were recognised for their amazing entries at tradeshow, Installer 2018. Regional winners received their prizes from the

award sponsors and had the chance to speak about the awards to fellow plumbers and heating installers. Neil Bumford, managing director said: “We’re over the moon to have won the Heating Installer Award 2018 for the North East and Yorkshire, and would like to thank our customers for nominating us, particularly as this year marks the company’s 50th anniversary. “At Bumford Heating Limited we are incredibly passionate about the work we do and aim to provide the best level of service possible to all customers.” The awards launched in 2016, asking tradesmen and women to submit examples of excellent work carried out over the last 12 months in order to shine a light on industry champions who often go unnoticed. The awards are sponsored by Danfoss, Wolseley, Avanti Gas, Polypipe, Sentinel, Installer Magazine, and Vaillant UK. To contact Bumford Heating Limited, call 01226 749300 or visit www.bumfords.com.
BUMFORDS’ TOP TIPS Each month Neil Bumford, MD of Bumford Heating, tells us one of his top tips for keeping our homes warm and energy efficient. Don’t waste warm water – if you waste warm water, you are paying for two energy bills – once for the water, and once to heat it. My money saving tips include using a washing up bowl rather than using a running tap. This could save you around £25 a year. Other water saving initiatives include installing water saving devices to taps, which will also help you save money by lowering your water usage. For more information about Bumford Heating Limited and the services they provide, visit www.bumfords.com.
College raffle raises funds to end period poverty Barnsley College’s Donate/Take initiative has raised £822 to buy sanitary products to end period poverty for students by holding a luxury raffle. The initiative was set up by art, design and fashion tutorial team leader, Katharine Jackson and tutorial learning mentor, Moz Khokhar. Donate/Take boxes have been placed in female toilets across the college campuses, where staff and students can donate sanitary products that can then be taken by those who are in need. Katharine said: “We have students who don’t come to college when they are menstruating as they don’t have the means to support themselves during this time. Having an open and approachable attitude to talking and supporting students during their period removes the stigma and taboo around this subject.” The project’s latest fundraising initiative saw them run a college-wide luxury raffle where incredible prizes, including a 32gb iPad, could be won by staff and students. The prizes were donated by college departments and local businesses such as the Barnsley Morrison’s supermarket and Churchfield Dental Centre. Moz added: “We had some very generous donations from departments, individuals and external companies, which helped make the raffle the success it was. We would like to thank everyone who bought tickets and all those who donated prizes.”

FUN FOR ALL IT’S CARNIVAL TIME! HERE’S THE PICK OF THE AREA’S BEST FETES AND FESTIVALS. estivals may conjure up images of packed-up cars, camping and fields of mud, so it’s no wonder many of us would rather stay close to home and enjoy the range of one-day festivals on offer in our own area. The great thing about a community festival is that it’s easier to gather your friends and family together, but even if you are flying solo, you’re sure to bump into old friends and neighbours. It is a great way of feeling part of the community, and in most cases, these events raise money for local causes and charities. With this in mind, we’ve rounded up some of this summer’s best galas and carnivals taking place in north Sheffield.

A parade led by the Gala Princess, will go through the village and arrive at the park for 1pm. Baking and craft competitions and dog show Scrufts will return, while dance acts, singing groups and the Oughtibridge Brass band will provide entertainment, and a range of food stalls will feed all the family.

THE ESSENTIAL FESTIVAL GUIDE WHETHER YOU’RE A BATTLE-HARDENED FESTIVAL-GOER OR YOU’RE TAKING YOUR FIRST FORAY OUT INTO THE MUD AND MUSIC, HERE’S A HELPFUL GUIDE TO HELP YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TRAMLINES EXPERIENCE.
FOOD AND DRINK Spending days partying to awesome acts makes you work up an appetite, and we all know that quality food and drink are a vital part of any festival experience. With that said, Tramlines have hand-picked the best street food stalls from near and far, with a wide variety of options available to suit everyone’s dietary needs. They will also be sourcing some of the best local brews, alongside household names. Head outside the festival and sample delicious street food or pop into one of the local cafés and restaurants.
ACCESS PA Ticket Scheme. Tramlines provide a PA ticket scheme for individuals who would be unable to attend events without bringing a personal assistant. Once you have bought a full price ticket, fill in the online access request form in order to receive your personal assistant ticket.
VIEWING PLATFORM A viewing platform with a stewarded accessible toilet is located at the main stage. In order to gain access to the viewing platform, you need a viewing platform wristband. This also comes with a lanyard that can be worn by a personal assistant or companion so that they can join you on the platform.
ACCESSIBLE TOILETS There will be a stewarded accessible toilet located beside the viewing platform at the main stage - a viewing platform wristband is required to gain access to this toilet. There will be other non-stewarded accessible toilets at every toilet block throughout the festival. 32 Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk
tranquillity - from rock balancing to foraging for materials to create woodland crafts. Jamboree Arts will also be hosting a circus school on Saturday and Sunday, where you can walk the tight wire or try your hand at juggling and acrobatics in the big top.
STROBE LIGHTING There will be general warning signs around the main arena if strobe lighting will be used. Due to the nature of the artists, it is likely that strobe lighting will be used throughout the performances. There will not be a warning immediately before a period of strobe lighting.
MEDICAL SERVICES There will be a first aid tent located in the main arena, alongside medics and first aiders on patrol around the event. If you need to store medication, contact Tramlines in advance so the appropriate arrangements can be made.
VIP A new venue means a new VIP area. This year’s VIP will be located next to the lake, setting the scene for an idyllic festival experience. You will get to jump past everyone in the queue and take advantage of the VIP entrance, and it doesn’t stop there, as you will have access to a private bar, lakeside seating and “posh loos” will be on standby all weekend.
AFTER HOURS ASSISTANCE DOGS Assistance dogs are welcome on site.
CHILDREN AND FAMILIES This year there will be a wide-ranging set of activities for people of all ages and under 12’s get to enjoy the festival for free when accompanied by a paying ticket holder. By day, Into the Trees is the dedicated family area, and the new pop up cinema, brought to you by Village Screen, will be running across the weekend, if you’re in the mood to kick back with a movie. Responsible Fishing will be taking the reins on Saturday and Sunday, bringing their woodland workshops that run throughout the weekend - allowing for a little peace and
By night, Into the Trees will welcome an older crowd, with Club Tropicana blowing up Friday evening by bringing you the best 80s, 90s, pop and disco anthems. Expect ridiculous Hawaiian shirts, free flower garlands, confetti cannons, flamingos, rubber ducks and more. Saturday night hosts The Cool Beans Roadshow Mega DJ Party - expect an energetic, interactive and amusing hour of power from the duo, which is guaranteed to leave a smile on your face. Think Vic and Bob with decks and a mixer, plus special guests. Fruit N Juice will be closing on Sunday with their empowering focus and celebration of everything feminine and queer. Expect R&B to Kylie and all things wonderful in between. Head over to the city centre once the activities in Hillsborough Park finish, where the pubs, clubs and warehouse spaces will ensure the party continues into the early hours.

In the Rev, we trust JON McCLURE HAS HAND-PICKED HIS OWN LINE-UP OF CRACKING BANDS FOR TRAMLINES. SHOULD BE GOOD, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR. t’s been a hell of a decade for music in Sheffield. Both Jon McClure of Reverend and The Makers and Tramlines Festival have changed and grown so much, giving the Steel City back the strong musical reputation it deserves. So it’s only right that a member of Sheffield musical royalty (or should that be clergy?) should get actively involved in the festival’s 10th birthday party. Tramlines have invited Jon to curate The Leadmill Stage, at the festival’s new home in Hillsborough Park, which will feature a line-up of live music exclusively curated by the Reverend and the Makers on the Sunday 22 July. Jon has now announced his completed his Sunday line-up, which includes headliner Tom Grennan and Sheafs, with the addition of Spring King and Sophie and the Giants. “I am very excited to be bringing the best new music to Tramlines for my stage

curation,” he said. “I’m stoked to be working with my friends at The Leadmill, and having Tom Grennan and Sophie and the Giants there will be ace as they are artists I have worked with previously. All the bands are ace. See you down the front!” The stage will also allow live comedy to make its debut at the festival in the daytime, with Jon also on board with the curation. The side-splitting comedy line-up, will be headlined by local legend John Shuttleworth, who will be showcasing his unshakeable faith in his own musical compositions, on Sunday 22 July. Joining John will be Britain’s only ‘goth, lesbian, transsexual comedian’, Bethany Black, with her uniquely dark brand of humour. Sophie and the Giants are a new band straight out of Sheffield, hotly tipped by the Rev for great things. Despite forming last @PulseRMC
year, they have already made significant forays into the world of music, touring with Reverend and the Makers, The Rifles, Findlay and Yonaka. Their debut single ‘Monsters’ was released in April filled with roaring guitars and a fem-punk attitude from the lead singer Sophie Scott. The Rev’s final addition, Spring King, originate from Macclesfield and are a fourpiece art-pop-punk band who shot to fame following their appearance at SXSW in 2015. After supporting the Kaiser Chiefs ‘Stay Together Tour’ in 2017, they have a host of festival appearances coming up in 2018, including a return performance at Tramlines after their appearance last year. It’s great to see the Rev so committed to supporting and giving a platform to both home grown Sheffield bands, as well as scouting out some of the best up-and-coming acts and bringing them right to our doorsteps.
CATCH REVEREND AND THE MAKERS ON THE TRAMLINES STAGE ON SATURDAY 21 JULY.
Reverend and The Makers will also be performing on the highly coveted main Tramlines Stage on the Saturday night, shortly before Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds take to the stage to headline. Jon has just as much love for the big name bands at this year’s festival and counts himself as one of Noel’s biggest fans. Though many festival goers may be praying for some Oasis classics at Tramlines 2018, Jon is quick to compliment Noel’s latest releases with High Flying Birds. “I salute Noel for trying to do something different. I’ve always wanted him to make that sort of Setting Sun [Oasis] album that he threatened to do with The Chemical Brothers,” said Jon. “Luckily, he’s sent me the album, I’ve heard it, and it is very different from anything you’ve heard from him before. “Holy Mountain doesn’t really represent how different it is; there are some other bits that are way out west, and I think it’s the best thing he’s ever done. I hope and wish he’ll do more of it.” Jon is quick to point out that he’s never

been one to rest on his laurels. He knows that he’s been lucky to still be going and gigging after all these years. Many people from Sheffield’s illustrious musical past have struggled to make it pay and fell by the wayside. “I’m a lucky b*****d and I don’t forget that. I never forget that,” he agreed. “The only time it ever went wrong was after the second album. Our record label folded and I was taking loads of drugs and I’d had a few knocks from the press for being political. There was about a six-month period where nothing happened. I hated it.” With that in mind McClure is now looking at ways to secure his future for years to come. As well as helping other bands in Sheffield to get on the right track, he often turns to other members of Sheffield music royalty for advice. “I’ve been talking to Hawley a lot, I look at him and think you’re 50 and you’re doing better than you’ve ever done arguably. How do you get to that point? That’s what I’m interested in. “Cos I’m doing alright. Seven albums in. All in the top 20. This one has been the highest since the first one, but I just look at him and think, ‘you’ve smashed it pal!’” As well as the recent release of seventh album, The King is Dead, McClure has hinted at some more projects in the pipeline that will blend music and some of his other passions together, but until then it’s time to enjoy the limelight at Tramlines. It’s been an incredible 11 years since Heavyweight Champion of The World burst into our clubs and radio waves, but you can be sure that the band’s hometown fans will be heard singing this classic for miles around Hillsborough Park when they play Tramlines next month. THE TRANSFORMATION OF ITS HOYLAND STORE SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT PREMIER EYE CARE’S COMMITMENT TO ITS CUSTOMERS.
A whole new look remier Eye Care, Hoyland’s leading opticians, has just undergone a major refurbishment at their King Street practice and the transformation in-store is simply amazing. With all the negativity that’s around in Hoyland at the moment, it’s very encouraging to see one local business investing in, not only its own future, but that of its local customers with such an excellent transformation. Owner Tanveer Hussain said: “We have a strong and very loyal customer base here in our Hoyland branch and our investment with our branch refurbishment here in Hoyland reflects what we think of the future
for the town. “At the same time as the refurb, we’ve also introduced several new ranges of frames from well-known brands, which we’re sure will turn out to be very popular with our customers.” With the warmer weather and bright sunshine hopefully being more of a regular feature, Premier Eye Care is the place to find all your favourite brands. Ray-Ban sunglasses have been popular, so they’ve got the latest models in. Adding to this, they have Oakley sunglasses as part of the Tour de Yorkshire event and Polaroid sunglasses, polarised as standard to eliminate all types of glare.
If you’d like to book an eye test or you’re thinking of getting some new frames, or indeed, those prescription sunglasses for your holidays, then now is a great time to pop down and see the team at Premier Eye Care. You can call in and see them at 5 King Street in Hoyland town centre, next door to Heron Foods or you can call them on 01226 742158. There’s ample free car parking at the side or rear of the practice. Premier Eye Care 5 King Street, Hoyland, Barnsley, S74 9JU Tel: 01226 742158 www.premier-eye-care.co.uk

FORGET THE PAIN OF THE PLANE, TRAVEL TO NEW YORK IN STYLE ONBOARD THE CUNARD QUEEN MARY II. BY CARMEL STEWART. sometimes think it would be easier if we were all required to wear pyjamas when travelling by air. That way we would have less hassle at airports having to take off coats, jackets, jumpers, shoes and belts while sorting out bags, laptops, phones, keys, cash, liquids and, in some cases, pushchairs, toddlers and nappy bags. It’s for our security, I hear you say, and so it is, but that doesn’t make it any easier so when the invitation arrived to spend Christmas in New York, I hesitated. Airports at Christmas? Hmm. But I had the time and was saving on hotels, so it seemed churlish to refuse. Keen to avoid the easy-peasy, cheap and squeezy airlines, I looked at an alternative means of transport and came up with a Cunard non-stop crossing on the Queen Mary II. Not to be confused with a cruise, for me this was a strictly one-stop journey from Southampton to New York, which is far less stressful than you might imagine. First off, there is a train directly from Sheffield to Southampton. Off the train, into a taxi; out of the taxi into the departure lounge; bags whisked away almost before the taxi had come to a halt. Slight moment of panic – were they so efficiently dispatched by a port employee or by an opportunist thief? Momentary hesitation and then relax. I’m on holiday. I have my passport, my ticket, my bank card and my Kindle, what else do I need?
Entry to the departure lounge was equally straightforward. Walk through the doors and you’ll be presented with a coloured card, up the escalator to the spacious waiting area with free magazines and newspapers, plus coffee, tea and snacks at not too exorbitant prices. Then it is merely a question of waiting for your colour to be called. So long as you have your passport, a printed copy of your ticket and a printout of your ESTA (US Visa), check-in is very simple and hassle free. There is the inevitable security screening but it’ll take all your ‘Merry Christmas’ bags without a murmur – Henderson’s Relish, hot sauce selection, mince pies and all. A short stroll later and you arrive on board what can only be described as a floating luxury hotel. The setting is truly spectacular with a magnificent central staircase, endless corridors, wonderful dining rooms, dance hall, theatre, planetarium and swimming pools. There is even a kennels staffed by qualified professionals, so your pets can also travel in style. Excellent food is available in multiple locations; the Queen’s Grill, the Princess Grill, the Britannia Club, King’s Court and the Golden Lion pub among them. There are multiple activities too. Joining in is optional. Some entered everything with huge enthusiasm, others were of the bah

humbug variety and kept clear. You can dress up for dinner or not – although eating after 6pm requires smart/casual at the very least. Some took the plunge with long frocks, bow-ties and cummerbunds, others skated very close to the edge with black jeans and Tshirts. I was not keen on joining the choir, learning to paint, Trivia tournaments or ballroom dancing but I did learn to play backgammon, thanks to Terry who was not an employee but an enthusiast, eager to spread the word. If I have a point of criticism it has to be for the internet access which was truly dreadful. Not that that was anyone on board’s fault. It is what it is but the fact that Cunard charges were so high was a bone of contention among all trying to log on – or indeed log off. I paid more than £80 for my 240-minute package. It regularly took me 20 minutes to access my emails, five minutes to read them and a further 20 minutes to log off – all
included in the paid for time. I twice had to go to reception and ask them to log me off as my laptop was stuck fast. So, Cunard, why not make it FREE? It won’t change the doziness of it all but it will stop people complaining. One thing about which there was no complaint was our guest speaker – Sir Ranulph Fiennes – an excellent entertaining speaker and a thoroughly pleasant gent into the bargain.
THE DETAILS: A transatlantic Christmas crossing on the QMII costs from £889 per person. That fare includes the crossing, food and soft drinks in certain areas. It also included the flight home but not any alcohol. Fine dining requires an upgraded cabin. Normally, I would advise travellers to book the best they can afford but, if New York is your final destination, select the cheapest you can live with for a week. You’ll have access to all the shows and entertainment. The food in King’s Court is wonderful and plentiful. Service is help yourself – and people did, believe you me – but it’s relaxed and comfortable. Afterwards you can stroll across to the Carinthia Lounge for coffee. If you are feeling really anti-social, room service is available free of charge. There are plenty of areas to sit and relax during the journey. A balcony suite will give you the same view of the Atlantic mile after @PulseRMC
mile but that’s about it. If you decide to go on to the Caribbean, more expensive accommodation is worth considering. On boarding you will be required to register your bank card. Any expenses incurred will then be deducted. There are many upmarket shops on board as well as places for fancy coffees and cocktails, spa treatments and hair styling – all of which will be added to the final tally. If you travel with the family a check on expenditure every couple of days will save palpitations at the end of the voyage. Note too, that, unless you ask to have it removed, you will automatically be charged tips at between $11.50 and $13.50 per person per day, depending on accommodation. You will also find 15 per cent has been added to your bill for any bar, wine or salon services. It all adds up if you are not careful. Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk 39

THIS MONTH, PETER HAIGH AND SONS CELEBRATE THEIR FIRST ANNIVERSARY. HERE, PETER LOOKS BACK OVER A SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR. eter Haigh and Sons opened for business on 12 June 2017. We had an idea of how we expected the business to grow over the first year, but knew we would have no money as we had invested what we had into the business. At the beginning, there were no phone calls for several weeks, but we stuck at it and have come out the other side, stronger and happy knowing we made the right decision. We have been overwhelmed by the love and support we have been given over the past year, not only by the families we have met, but by family, friends, neighbours, clergy, our suppliers and other funeral directors. It really is a family business with myself and Julie at the helm, and sons Matthew and Oliver helping with the back office, and Julie’s parents being pivotal in getting the business open.
Several funeral directors told us we would be lucky if we did 10 funerals in our first year. We have done over 30, and the families we have cared for have given us some beautiful testimonials. Peter Haigh and Sons provide the complete funeral service for all areas of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham. We provide a professional, compassionate and competitive service, which compares favourably with the big funeral companies in Sheffield. We provide you with an initial ‘estimate of charges’ so when the final invoice arrives, there are no extras added. We are also signatories of the 'Fair Funerals Pledge' where we put the price of our most affordable funeral online along with third party costs. Our website shows all our pricing - transparency is key to providing
a good service. Julie, Matthew, Oliver and I would like to say thank you to all the families for entrusting Peter Haigh and Sons to arrange the funeral of their loved ones. We have met some lovely people, albeit under sad circumstances, and some have become friends. We hope to serve the community of Ecclesfield and surrounding areas for many years to come, and hope you will trust us to be your local funeral director. THIS MONTH’S PICTURES RECALL SUMMER FESTIVALS OF DAYS GONE BY.
Village in a carnival mood t’s summer, and that can only mean one thing… festival season has finally arrived. So this month, we look back at old photos of Bolsterstone Carnival – a local event with close ties to church celebrations. The ladies in the photo (above) appear to be outside St Mary’s Church in Bolsterstone. The church dates back to 1879, although there is evidence that a place of worship has existed on the site since the 12th century. It is not certain why the ladies were dressed up – perhaps the carnival was a fundraising event. The accompanying caption says: “This is the Bolsterstone Carnival of 1923. The ladies are, from left to right: Lilley Haigh, Nellie Cooke, Mrs R. Shaw, Mrs T. Westhead, Nellie Rodgers, Mrs Dyson and Mrs Donkersley.” Below is a photo, presumably taken in the same year. The caption for this says: “It wasn’t just the ladies who enjoyed dressing up! Here we see the Bolsterstone Men’s Group having fun. On the back row, second from the left, is ‘Walshy’ Gill and third from the right is Herbert Swallow. On the front row, second from the left, is George Hall.” St Mary’s Church has also commemorated its supporters over the years. Depicted (centre right) is a memorial plaque featuring the names of those who rang the bells as part of a major celebration in 1909. “This memorial to the ‘Change Ringers’ of 1909 can be seen in the bell tower of St Mary’s Church in Bolsterstone. St Mary’s was the only church in the area to have

Summer breeze THESE NEW DRIVES WILL LEAVE YOU LOOKING AND FEELING GOOD, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH.
Good things come in small packages If you want a luxurious vehicle but don’t want your usual three big German manufacturers – Mercedes, BMW and Audi – then Volvo is your next best bet. In recent years the Germans have pounced on the emergence of the small premium crossover market – the most popular market in the world – whilst Volvo has yet to catch up on the act, until now. Named the Volvo XC40, it’s the perfect younger brother to the XC60 ad XC90 as it holds all their core values and luxury feel but compacted into a smaller package. Three petrol engines and two diesel engines are available with power ranging between 150 and 250hp. Offered with front- or all-wheel drive, and manual and automatic gearboxes. Priced from £27,610
Design Editions The McLaren 570S Spider is one of the world’s best all-round supercars at the moment. With its speed, looks, presence, handling and build quality nothing can really touch it within its class. There are five Design Editions: Silica White, Storm Grey, Vermillion Red, Onyx Black or Vega Blue. Each colour is matched to an interior scheme from the By McLaren Designer range; four sporting and one with a more luxury accent. Wheel finish, brake caliper colour and branding and finish of the 570S Spider’s electrically retractable two-piece hard-top are also all selected by McLaren designers. As with the normal 570S Spider, power is generated from a twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 making 562hp, with a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds with vmax occurring at 204mph. Priced from around £173,000.
THE M2 IS DEAD… LONG LIVE THE M2
The BMW M2 – the car which has wowed the motoring community since its launch in the spring of 2016, and made its name as one of the best M-division cars to ever be made – is now dead. While this may seem be a tragic miscalculation by BMW, trust us, it isn’t, because say hello to the BMW M2 Competition. What makes this different from the normal M2? Well, apart from changes to the steering, braking system, exhaust and suspension and wrapping it in a revised exterior design that has been enhanced for aerodynamic efficiency, the biggest change is with the engine – fitted under the hood is the same engine from the BMW M3/M4 but detuned to ‘only’ 410hp. Manual and automatic options available. Cost? £49,285. @PulseRMC
Is there anything quite like a Lotus? They are barebones, no-nonsense motoring with a motorsport heritage that can give the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini a run for their money on the public roads. And the best of all – they’re British! Lotus’s new creation, the Exige Cup 430 Type 25, as the name suggests, is based on the ballistic Exige 430 car, with the Type 25 playing homage to the Type 25 F1 racing car of the 1960s piloted by the great Jim Clark with its unique livery in metallic Lotus Racing Green or Old English White. Powered by a 3.5-litre supercharged V6 motor, it produces 430hp and 440Nm, a 0-60mph time of 3.2 seconds and 220kg of downforce. Price? £110,000. Pulse | www.pulsemag.co.uk 49
