It is thanks to the Ecclesfield Civil Parish Past and Present Archiving Project, a collaboration between Ecclesfield Parish Council and local history groups, that this material is now being brought together to form a comprehensive online archive. This month, we spoke to project co-ordinator Christine Handley for all the details on the project, including their upcoming events and information on how local residents can get involved (page 14). We have also been sampling the delights of the fantastic Whitley Hall Hotel. From pigeon breast served with chocolate ganache to a gourmet meat and potato pie, this grand old hall impressed us at every turn. See page 26 to read all about our experience. Getting in the spirit at one of the project’s many events

As the project dedicated to recording and preserving Ecclesfield parish’s history prepares to reach its end later this year, Stephanie Burns spoke to project co-ordinator Christine Handley to discover exactly what she and a dedicated team of local volunteers have been up to. he Ecclesfield Parish Council region has a rich and proud history, recorded over time in a great number of historical photographs, films and documents. But due to the nature of the parish – which covers 22 sq km around Burncross, Chapeltown, Grenoside, High Green and much of Ecclesfield – this material has been spread over several locations and has lacked a single, comprehensive archive. Until now. In 2012, parish clerk David Morton and local councillors recognised that something should be done to pull this information together, and make it available to all those who wished to access it, by working with and building on the efforts of several active local history and conservation groups. After 18 months of talks and meetings, they proceeded with a successful Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bid and in 2014 were granted £82,400 to help record and preserve this history. They have been working hard ever since to build a clear picture of what life was – and is – like in this corner of north Sheffield. Supported by project co-ordinator Christine Handley, the Ecclesfield Civil Parish Past and Present Archiving Project – as it is officially known – is collating and digitising a huge amount of material to create an online resource for schools, individuals and other groups to learn more about their local history.

Thousands of photographs, prints, books, newspapers, diaries, maps, films and audio materials from the mid-19th century onwards are being collected and either scanned in to appear online or put into a digital archive to preserve them for use in the future. Events 2016 ‘90 Years Young’ in High Green Saturday 30 April 10.30am-3pm Wesleyan Church schoolroom, High Green To coincide with the Queen’s 90th birthday, Christine and Heritage High Green will take a look back at the changes that have taken place in the village and the domestic, working and social lives of its inhabitants. Ecclesfield Parish Council chair Cllr Sheila Constance will open the event. It will feature displays, a timeline of events and a ‘fashion through the ages’ show. Jenny Bland will also be bringing her history van and transporting visitors back to the 1920s when Princess Elizabeth was born. A great opportunity to find out more about the archiving project and the new website.

financial support of both Sheffield City Council and Ecclesfield Parish Council, has been run by a community enterprise for well over 20 years. Local children have been involved with the baths since its inception, even protesting its potential closure in the 90s, and Christine believed it was only fitting that this tradition continued until its end. She was therefore delighted when KS3 pupils at Ecclesfield School agreed to get involved. Coordinated by English teacher Charlie Pritchard-Brennan, the students looked at contrasting factual writing, analysing the opening day brochure, creative story writing and interviewing people to record their memories. As well as the local history groups, schools, churches, libraries, Scouts and Guides that are already involved, Christine is encouraging individuals to contribute. “It’s a broad brush project so there are lots of ways that people can help out,” she said. “We’re training volunteers so they have the skills to carry on the work beyond the official end date of the project this October – from IT skills to interviewing techniques.” She is also eager to impress upon people the ‘present’ aspect of the project. “One of the things I keep saying to people is that what we’re doing today is history and we need to record it properly. We take lots of photographs in this modern age but it’s about what really captures the essence of the current time. So, while it’s great to gather material from 100 years ago, we also feel that preserving the present is just as important as reminiscing about the past.”

With food this good you don’t need an excuse to dine out at the Whitley Hall Hotel, writes Stephanie Burns.

FOOD TO CELEBRATE t’s one of S35’s most spectacular hidden gems. Nestled in the beautiful countryside between Penistone Road and Chapeltown Road, Whitley Hall Hotel has no doubt been the setting for the special occasions of many a Pulse reader. Indeed, on the night we visited – a midweek evening as spring was just beginning to bloom – we overheard a number of celebratory clinking of glasses and happily paused in a doorway at one point as a family gathered to have their photo taken on the grand old staircase in the lobby. The evening had begun in style with a G&T in the lounge; a roaring open fire crackling in the background and a window overlooking the pristinely manicured gardens adding to its charm. We took our time over the menu and quickly set our mouths watering over the prospect of dishes such as chicken and pistachio terrine, marinated Moss Valley belly pork and pan fried sea bream fillet. However, it was something much more homely that drew my attention to the specials menu – a meat and potato pie. Now, you may think that this particular dish seems out of place on such a sophisticated menu, but this was no ordinary pie. Served silverservice style at the table, this was a triumph of wonderfully tender beef, rich flavoursome gravy and flaky puff pastry and was easily one of the best I’ve ever eaten. My partner’s charred sirloin of Hereford beef was just as good. Accompanied by shallot chutney, confit cherry tomatoes and seriously good chips, it was an excellent example of another classic. These hearty dishes had followed rather more delicate starters, both of which looked pretty as a picture. My creamed goat’s cheese was cut through with a ragout of sharply pickled vegetables, ensuring the overall experience wasn’t too rich. Across the table, my partner thoroughly enjoyed his lesson in adding a touch of sweetness to a savoury dish thanks to a butter-roasted pigeon breast that, alongside sour cherry and beetroot purée, came with a smooth chocolate ganache. It was a wonderfully unusual addition to the plate. For puds, the spiced sugar doughnuts immediately caught my eye and were every bit as scrumptious as I’d hoped, and the indulgent iced biscuit nougat and areo foam (a kind of chocolate and cream mousse) that accompanied them were divine. It was a

similar story for my companion’s brandy snap basket – filled with homemade ice cream and sorbet, it was a refreshing end to our evening. Although we hadn’t arrived at Whitley Hall Hotel to celebrate an occasion, we left safe in the knowledge that we’d experienced something really rather special. And besides, when the food and setting are this good, who needs an excuse to visit?

Exams are looming, but keep calm and don’t panic, writes David Kaye. ou may have noticed that a wave of panic is beginning to spread through S35. To be precise, it is gripping those households and families where there are children who will be doing exams and tests. There will, however, be households where the occupants are very relaxed. I remember one boy at school who didn’t seem to care. He had never done anything remarkable in class work and didn’t seem to study particularly hard. When it came to the main event, he was quite unruffled and went on to get grade A in every subject. Others are very bright and normally score top marks in everything they do but, come exam time, they struggle with the pressure. Coping with pressure is necessary in today’s world. Indeed, some tension is useful if there is to be good performance. The problem comes when there is too much, or it isn’t managed well enough. Here are some thoughts for families dealing with test and exam pressure at this time of year. As Arthur Ashe, former world number one tennis player, said: “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.” This means doing revision thoroughly. Don’t be fooled by the idea that spending hours swotting will necessarily be good. It is much better to do 20 minutes

concentrated effort then relax as the brain will be processing even when not revising. Don’t forget to have days with no school work. We have a view that more is better – but look at Finland. They have one of the best performing education systems in the world yet they do less school work than we do. When taking downtime, consider its quality. Are video games the best way to relax the body and brain? Finally, try to avoid making the whole exam thing a make-orbreak experience. Yes, it is true that you need maths and English GCSEs for just about everything these days, but there are other opportunities if the grade is missed first time around. I wish every child and their families the very best as this important time of year approaches. THE GARDEN GURUS Alan Titchmarsh says… get your soil up to scratch Your garden soil is likely to be in poor condition right now, after the wet winter has washed away many of its nutrients. So one of the very first jobs to do, is to get the soil up to scratch – then it can nurture all your plants, just as they’re starting to grow. Feed beds and borders with any good general fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone or another organic alternative. Sprinkle it on by hand all over the soil, applying it underneath shrubs and round the base of climbers, perennials and clumps of bulbs. Trickle a line of fertiliser along the base of all your hedges – they’ll be feeling fairly starved after this winter and spring is the perfect time to feed them. Fruit trees, bushes and canes also benefit from a good start-ofthe-season feed, so use the same general fertiliser for those too. But since they need extra potash to encourage flowering and

fruiting, also give them sulphate of potash (at half an ounce per square yard). This same “cocktail” is a good late-spring feed for clematis, which is a greedy plant and also appreciates extra potash.

Carol Klein says… sow your seeds

Start with a small room so you won't feel daunted. Make a list of what you have, and what you no longer need. Divide everything into categories, such as paper, gadgets, clothes, books. Take out everything that needs to be cleaned – and I mean everything, including the curtains. If you haven't used something for more than a year, out it goes. If it holds very dear memories, start a memory box. Divide everything into: things that are useless and have to be thrown away; items that can be recycled; and things you can give to friends. Then start assembling your piles. Once you've collected everything, act immediately – go to the tip, the charity shop or the recycling depot. Bring in a basin of hot, soapy water. Clean those ledges. Clean windows until they shine. Dust the lamp. Get the vacuum attachment and clean the dark corners. This takes time – don't expect to do more than two rooms a day.

Outdoors, self-sown seedlings are beginning to peep out in beds and borders, but the greenhouse is heaving with life. Providing it has been stored in a cool, dry place and out of bright sunlight, most seed is raring to go. Any pot or recycled container will do for your sowing as long as it has drainage holes (imperative) and a reasonable depth (at least 5cm). What are we sowing? Lots of veg. Fill containers liberally with peat-free seed compost and firm gently to produce a level surface just below the rim of the pot or tray. Sprinkle small seeds on the surface of the compost by pinching with thumb and forefinger or tapping from your palm; it doesn't matter how you do it as long as the seed is sown finely. The biggest cause of death in seedlings is from damping off, a fungal disease that makes them collapse. And the main reason for damping off is sowing too thickly. Cover seed with a layer of sharp grit, emulating what would happen in nature. The grit helps stop the seed being washed away yet retains moisture underneath and provides drainage around the shoots. If seedlings are there for any length of time, grit also deters weeds and liverwort from taking hold.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen says… substance before style Many people place maintenance way down their list of property essentials, preferring to spend money on more immediately glamorous items, but there's no point in buying a costly, luxurious carpet or rug for your bedroom, if two months later a leak caused by faulty roof tiles means you have to replace it. There is nothing stylish about damp. Preventive care is the best form of maintenance - it's the least intrusive and, in the end, it's the least expensive. Get the basics right - and then you can have fun! The great irony is that if most of us spent a little time and money on some simple maintenance, in the long run we'd probably have more to spend on the, admittedly, exciting creative and imaginative aspects of home ownership.

Monty Don says… select seasonal flowers After the first delicate bulbs of early spring and the pastel flush of yellow that follows with daffodils, tulips bring colour like a carnival to the garden. The earliest will start flowering at the beginning of April, but the end of the month and well into May is their prime season. Before choosing your bulbs, it is worth remembering where tulips come from so that the ground can be properly prepared. They mainly originate from an area that now occupies Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Armenia, where they grow on shale slopes. This means they have very sharp drainage so they never sit in the wet. Give them as much sun as you have and – most importantly – do whatever you can to improve the drainage. If you have very wet, cold soil, it is a good idea to grow new bulbs in containers. The bulbs can then be lifted in due course and the best surviving bulbs from the containers planted into the borders. Not all tulips flower at the same time. It is much easier to plant tulips of the same type and group such as lily-flowered, triumph or parrot tulips together. www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

College claims Schools Under-18s cup Barnsley College’s Sports Academy footballers are celebrating after winning the South Yorkshire Schools Under-18 Cup. The boys claimed the trophy thanks to a convincing 4-0 victory against Maltby Academy in the final, which was held at Balby Carr Academy in Doncaster. Lizzie Murphy experiences the rich variety of life in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica.

NATURAL WONDERLAND lying through the forest canopy nearly 1500m above the ground, this felt like a challenge that would even make Bear Grylls think twice. Well, almost. The fact that I had been kitted out with a harness and a helmet and was accompanied by a team of safety-conscious guides may detract slightly from the True Survivor element of Costa Rica’s Ecoglide zip-wire experience. In fact, it was the perfect introduction for two adrenaline rookies such as myself and my traveling companion, my dear old dad. Costa Rica is a land rich in experiences. A paradise for thrill-seekers and nature-lovers alike, the country attracts over 2.5million tourists annually. Almost half of these visitors are seeking to explore the expansive natural beauty of the country, which is estimated to contain five per cent of the world’s biodiversity. As both a biologist and lover of all things Attenborough, I leapt at the opportunity to discover this treasure trove of tropical life. I was certainly not disappointed by the gems we uncovered. Some of Costa Rica’s richest life is found on land, in the rainforests of the northern highlands. A varied selection of mammals live here, from the heavily armoured armadillo to the wide-eyed kinkajou.

The star of the show is without a doubt the sloth, the world’s slowest mammal. Sleeping for between 15 and 20 hours a day, this animal moves so slowly its fur provides the perfect habitat for moths, beetles and cockroaches. We were lucky enough to spot one of these weird yet wonderful creatures during a night walk in the cloud forest of Monteverde. Hanging from a thin, trailing vine a mere three feet above us, it swung itself delicately upwards in search of some evening grub. It was not just this mysterious mammal that our tour guide, Elbert, was keen for us to witness. Once we were fully equipped, torches in hand, he led

along the seabed. Smaller, and thankfully less vicious, than Hollywood’s infamous Jaws, the white-tipped reef sharks paid us divers little attention. These were silent, graceful creatures, their sleek bodies moving in gentle curls with the current. Our breathing remained steady and slow, respectful of the fact that we were merely visitors to their aquatic kingdom. Eventually our air supplies indicated it was time for us to leave so we headed back to the surface, all limbs intact. A trip to Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of its prime surf locations and the choice is vast. The northern Pacific coastline is a haven to backpackers and beach bums, all in search of the perfect wave. We chose to spend the final few days of our Central American adventure at Tamarindo Bay, one of the most famous surf resorts in the country. Being a complete novice to the sport, I spent an intense two hours inhaling seawater as I threw myself off the board in a frenzy of flailing limbs. Such an exhausting effort finally paid off and I finally managed to ride a wave, albeit on an oversized foam beginners’ board. Costa Rica is so much more than a holiday destination; it’s a country of adrenaline and adventure. It’s the perfect place for those who are looking for something with a bit more bite than just sun, sea and sand… perhaps with the help of a shark or two.

Elbert had his walkietalkie at the ready, communicating with other nearby guides to ensure we saw the finest of what the forest had to offer under the veil of darkness. Elbert pointed through trees and branches to show us a side-striped palm viper, poised and ready for ambush. He shone his light into a small burrow between thick, knotted tree roots to show us a female orange-kneed tarantula. Leaves came alive, suddenly revealing themselves to be expertly camouflaged katydid crickets. He was so enthused to show us the forest at night our pace quickened until we were leaping over dead wood and hurling ourselves over fallen branches in true Indiana Jones-style, desperate not to miss out. Our explorations of Costa Rica’s natural wonders however, were not restricted to land. Never one to pass up the chance to dive beneath the waves, I spent one morning scuba diving off the north Pacific coast, around the Catalina Islands. On the boat ride to the islands a pod of dolphins joined us, breaking the water’s surface with their arching bodies. The diving itself uncovered moray eels with needle teeth, scorpion fish nestled into the sand and a shiny, silver trumpetfish, proudly hovering above the sand.
