I have been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate and have been advised that there is now an alternative treatment to long term drug therapy and the more invasive surgical options. What is involved and what are the benefits and advantages over the current treatment options for me? ANSWER:
It is not uncommon for men to have problems with their ‘waterworks’ which may be a symptom of an enlarging prostate gland. This particular condition is known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and is increasingly more common in men over the age of 50. It should be defined separately from other conditions such as prostate cancer, prostatitis, bladder problems and urethral strictures. Traditional treatments would usually focus on conservative measures (e.g. avoiding alcohol and caffeine, bladder training etc) to improve mild symptoms. As symptoms increase it may be necessary to consider medical treatments to relax the prostate muscle or shrink the prostate. These medicines are very successful particularly in men with potential for longer term prostate growth and worsening symptoms. Side effects can be limiting, particularly sexual dysfunction in some men. If the symptoms get worse or men stop passing urine altogether then surgery is indicated. Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the best known operation for men with persistent symptoms, or for men who fail on medical therapy. The technique involves removing prostate tissue. More recently, a new technique called Urolift has been developed to treat men with moderate to severe symptoms, without the need for invasive surgery such as TURP. Urolift involves the insertion of surgical staples into the prostate. The staples hold the prostate channel open (like tying back a pair of curtains) and allow men to pass urine more easily. The major advantages are that the procedure can be performed as a day case operation, a urinary catheter is often not required and a speedy recovery whilst preserving sexual function is achievable. Urolift also offers a new treatment option for men who wish to discontinue their medical therapy entirely. Problematic prostates can affect men at any age and a full assessment to diagnose the underlying problem is essential. Men suffering from BPH should speak to their GP and, if necessary, seek an opinion from a consultant urologist who can then inform them about appropriate, bespoke treatment.

n times gone by the British gentry may have been introduced with a grand fanfare of trumpets, but when knocking on the door of Carlton Towers, it’s a chorus of barks that precedes the introduction of Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan Howard. “Shush Sprout! Fonz, get down! Good boy Frank.” Lady Emma calms the dogs whilst Lord Gerald pops the kettle on, and soon we all settle down to discuss life at Carlton Towers, the ancestral home of the family of the Duke of Norfolk, and one of Yorkshire’s premium venues for weddings and corporate events. Carlton Towers became home to Gerald, Emma and newborn son Arthur in 1991. The house hadn’t been lived in since Gerald’s grandparents died in the 1970s, but the couple were no strangers to Carlton. “Put it this way, it was a very nice house to come to on a weekend and fill it with friends,

WEDDINGS AND A COOKERY SCHOOL ARE JUST THE START... carouse, and have a shoot and have a party.” “Don’t say too much!” Gerald interrupts his wife, before she continues. “Then when it came to living here with a baby and more babies on the way it was the most impractical house you could ever imagine.” By the mid-nineties the couple had three children and were slowly restoring Carlton to its former glory, with Emma leading the project. “I did it all, I loved it, I didn’t have any formal training but I loved decorating and it seemed I could do it, because it got good reactions. This house is my big baby,” she says. The restoration work began with a grant to redo the house’s stonework, a condition of the grant was the family opening their home to the public 30 days a year. Having wed at Carlton themselves, the couple opened their home as a wedding venue, today almost 80 weddings a year are held in the stunning venue and grounds. With weddings a success the couple turned their attention to refurbishing the old servants’ quarters into Cooks, The Carlton School of Food. More than just a cookery school, Cooks offers courses on learning to grow, bake, butcher, cook, forage or preserve food. The school is also available to hire for corporate events or for chefs to entertain clients in an unusual setting. Carlton Towers is keen to welcome more
corporate events at the house: “We’ve got land, we can do,” says Emma. Set in more than 1750 acres of stunning grounds, the house can be used for a whole host of exciting countryside pursuits and large-scale public and private events. With more than 20 luxurious bedrooms available for overnight stays after activities, Carlton provides a magnificent and unique setting for corporate away days. Lord and Lady Gerald are brimming with ideas for Carlton Towers, they’ve recently welcomed 40 piglets, have planted a vineyard with the intention of producing their own wine and, just before my arrival, their first pot of Carlton honey had arrived. The plan is to serve visitors food and drink grown, butchered and prepared on site, making for a truly special experience at Carlton Towers, whatever the occasion. WELCOME TO SKIING FOR GROWNUPS. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. here is one big plus about the midlife crisis. Having got it out of the way, you can use advancing age as the excuse to live a little. Or preferably, a lot. I knew I’d arrived at that point when other parents at the school tried to interest me in a group camping weekend. Now if wet canvas, cooking on a Bunsen burner and waking in the early hours for torchlit treks across a landscape reminiscent of Passchendaele are your kind of thing, go ahead. I spoke for myself. They were a few words that spoke more eloquently of liberation than did the Gettysburg Address. “I don’t do tents”. Villa Rose is definitely for people who don’t do tents. Or, come to that, not your average chalet-based ski trip. It has succeeded in taking what is

essentially a great way to spend a week’s winter break and refined it, to the nth degree. The business brains behind Villa Rose chose their location carefully. The beautiful little Haut Savoie town of Samoens has a number of things going for it. For a start, it’s a mere one hour from Geneva airport, where
a private transfer awaits. And because it is not as well-known as the mass tourism resorts like Val d’Isere, there is a pleasing absence of the lads-on-tour apres-ski brigade. Lesser-known it may be, but its lift system links with nearby Flaine to provide a huge range of excellent skiing within clear sight of Mont Blanc. And the town itself is still unspoiled, right down to the 550-year old lime tree that still grows in the main square. But where Samoens really scores is the fact that it’s ideal for those who’ve never skied before. It is without doubt one of the best beginners resorts in Europe. Rather than confining new skiers and boarders to the lower slopes, which are always the first to wear thin during the thaw, Samoens has a main cable car which takes them right to the heart of the piste network.

The Secteur Debutant features a series of slopes graded in difficulty so as to allow fear-free progression from rank beginner to budding intermediate, all within a few days. If you happen to be a capable skier and your friends or family are booked into ski school in the morning, the layout of the ski area means you can enjoy a few runs then meet for lunch at one of the nearby mountain-top restaurants (the Caboens being the pick). And the cable car takes newcomers and experts alike back down at the end of the day. Waiting for you will be one of Villa Rose’s drivers, who will shuttle guests and their equipment back to the chalet. It’s then time to make your way to the best restaurant in town. No need to bother venturing out in the cold to find it. This particular haven of culinary excellence is a few steps from your room door.
Alpine apple and Champagne rarebit
TRY THIS AT HOME:
Serves 4 4 slices wholegrain bakers’ bread 2 apples, skinned, cored and finely sliced 2 large banana shallots, finely chopped 50g grated Emmental 50g grated Gruyere Half tablespoon English mustard 100ml Champagne (or Prosecco if you must) 2.5 tablespoons plain flour Pinch salt and two turns black pepper Half a round Reblochon cheese to melt on top. 1. Toast the bread on one side. Combine all ingredients except Reblochon thoroughly in a bowl until you have a loose paste. 2. Butter the untoasted side of the bread and top generously with the mixture. Place slices of Reblochon over each slice. 3. Place in an oven preheated to 210c until golden on top. Place the slices in warm bowls and top with a poached egg.
This is the domain of Villa Rose’s own chef Dan Bearcroft, who goes to great lengths to ensure diners are well lookedafter. Before he wields so much as a single spatula, Dan consults guests in advance to establish their particular food requirements or preferences, from which he builds superb four-course menus. The challenge presented by my own family would have stopped Escoffier in his tracks. Four vegetarians, three of whom nevertheless eat seafood. One of the trio does not like spicy food, and two don’t care much for mushrooms. Sanguine professional that he is, Dan didn’t bat an eyelid at such a complex brief. “I’ve dealt with harder ones in the past,” came the reply. So by the time we headed, champagne in hand, up to the dining room with its open-plan kitchen, he had prepared a menu that could stand comparison with the finest of fine dining restaurants. Breakfast is founded on the same principles. After fruit, pastries, delicious
French bread and freshly-squeezed orange juice, your hot course is cooked to order. Typically, this might be a choice of eggs Benedict with a lemon hollandaise, crepes, smoked salmon and scrambled egg, or Dan’s own speciality, an apple and Champagne rarebit, the recipe for which he kindly gave us. When it comes to the arduous business of actually skiing, every angle is covered. For instance, Villa Rose staff arrange hire of equipment, which is then delivered to the boot room on the first morning. There’s an expert on hand to ensure correct fittings. All in all, it’s a far cry from ski holidays of yore, with their three hour coach transfers along dizzying mountain roads, cupboardsized accommodation and chalet girls who were all called Annabelle. So how was the skiing? Therein lies a tale. Call it the vain pursuit of lost youth if you like, but we decided to hit the piste for the first time in ten years – as snowboarders. If our ten and fourteen-year-old offspring could do it, so could we. Or could we? Find out how we got on in next month’s issue.

is always the uncertainty of B there what it will hold, but never was that question so at the forefront of my mind than before beginning sixth form. Now, having completed my first year and awaiting the beginning of the next, the question still persists and it seems more crucial than ever. It is difficult to put into words the feelings that come with knowing that all your current decisions will have an impact on your future. It is certainly anxiety-inducing, to say the least. From your exam efforts to the work

you do beyond school hours, there is the continual pressure to work hard and do well. Burnout is certainly a common feeling amongst students before they enter the summer holidays, all too eager to have respite to recover from the emotionally draining year. The years of sixth form are like no other: it is a 24/7 occupation, with school work and contemplation of the future even pervading my summer holidays. As I anxiously wait for my AS level results, the beginning of the UCAS application process and ‘summer homework’ unfortunately keep me occupied. With my school setting the deadline for university applications for November, there is mounting pressure over making my decisions for the future: if I want to go to uni, what degree would I like to study and what career path would I be interested in pursuing? Such responsibility is daunting for every student, but even more so when you don’t know what you want, as is the case for myself. Although many possibilities float around in my mind, not being sure that you are making the right decision certainly adds to the stress. After all, the worst situation would be applying for a course or university you are not sure you want to take or attend, but only realising you don’t once it is too late. This, along with the increasingly competitive nature of the application process, makes year 13 both a difficult and pivotal year. The need to ‘stand out’ and sell yourself as a person who universities should be desperate to want on their course through your personal statement forces a thorough evaluation of how your personality and all your interests can be used to make others view you favourably in a way that you never considered before. It certainly invites a selfexamination of whether you’re good enough, especially in relation to your peers.
But, of course, none of this matters if you don’t meet the entry requirements for the course you want to take, causing tension and unease to accompany your studies and exam efforts in year 13. But this pressure is certainly felt in year 12 too, perhaps more so on my year than those who came before us, following the introduction of new changes to exam specifications as of 2015. Most AS levels no longer count towards your A level grade, meaning that exams which you do at the end of year 12 will have to be conducted again the following year, meaning all your work in year 12 must be relearned in preparation for year 13 exams and thus increasing the intensity of your workload in this final and critical year. Hopefully this gives you some idea of the woes faced by today’s generation of students. Although I have so far painted the school life of a sixth form student and year 13 in general in quite a pessimistic and unfavourable way, that is only one side of the story. There are certainly benefits to sixth form: with the increased workload comes a new-found independence that in lower years you don’t quite have. From the responsibility being placed on you to manage your studies and success to being free to wear your own clothes and finally shed yourself of your hideous school uniform, I know I have I enjoyed this greater degree of freedom. Besides, approaching year 13 may bring with it many worries and pressures, but it also comes with the anticipation that you are coming close to the end of your school life and moving into a new chapter. Knowing I have my whole life ahead of me brings a mix of emotions, from a feeling of fear of the unknown to ultimately a feeling of optimism, but I am hopeful that the future will be promising.

Many schools have community or local authority nurseries attached to them, allowing children to access a wider range of facilities. When you have created a shortlist, visit each setting and talk to staff. First impressions are very important and you may find that you get ‘the feeling’ as soon as you walk in. Research shows that high levels of emotional wellbeing are essential for children’s development at any age. Children that are the happiest in their setting will make better progress than their peers. FROM THEIR FIRST STEPS TO GRAVITY-DEFYING TRICKS, THE LITTLE GYM IS THE PLACE TO GET YOUR YOUNGSTERS RUNNING, JUMPING AND DEVELOPING THEIR PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS. or children, play is every bit as important as work and whilst it’s the start of a new academic year this month, it’s also the start of a brand new term at The Little Gym. The Little Gym is a non-competitive gymnasium that gives babies as young as four months, to children as old as 12 a place to explore movement. The focus is different for each age group, but all of the classes follow a Three Dimensional Learning Approach - Get Moving (muscle control, co-ordination and motor skill development), Brain Boost (colour recognition, language development, and number and letter recognition) and Life Skills (independence, sharing and co-operation). The parent/child classes are a great opportunity for parents to nurture their child’s early development with the Bugs classes (four to ten months) focussing on hand-eye co-ordination and preparing them to take their first crawls/steps and the Birds classes (ten to 19 months) taking this to the next level with running and jumping and incorporating gymnastic equipment for greater exploration. Beasts (19 months to two and a half years) and Super Beasts (two and a half to three years) take this spatial awareness and co-ordination even further. Funny Bugs (three to four years) is a Pre-

School Gymnastics class where socialising with others and building confidence are just as important as furthering physical abilities. Children also learn and perform gymnastics routines for their parents during Show Week. Giggle Worms (four to five years) and Good Friends (five to six years) take things further still, cartwheels and forward rolls being just some of the things children learn in the safety of their soft play areas. Flips/Hotshots (beginner), Twisters/Hotshots (intermediate) and Aerials/Flic Flacs (advanced) are Primary School Gymnastics classes for six to 12 years and take defying gravity to the next level. Each child’s skills vary at this stage, but all will build strength, coordination and confidence, whilst playful themes will be implemented to keep them on track. Kate Henebury opened The Little Gym in Harrogate in 2010, before the amazing demand from parents led her to open a branch in Leeds in April of this year, and the response there has been just as encouraging. But in one important way, this super-sized restaurant still resonates with the ideals that brought the original Sukhothai, a tiny front room of a restaurant in Chapel Allerton, such instant acclaim many years ago… the food is absolutely authentic and consistently delicious. With herbs, exotic vegetables and spices flown in from Thailand on a weekly basis and a comprehensive menu of classic and less familiar dishes, this is the perfect place to enjoy the best of Thai cuisine, in a setting that makes even a simple midweek bite with an old friend feel like a special occasion. Immaculate service by a handful of hardworking young men and women dazzlingly dressed in national costume is all part of the show, but it’s as well to blot out those distractions and concentrate on the tough choices that will lie ahead in selecting from a massive menu. We made it slightly easy on ourselves by selecting the tong kam mixed starter (£5.45 per person) to share. This contained the best prawn toasts I have ever eaten; forget those

modest little mass-produced triangles you may have nibbled on elsewhere, these were thick soldiers, piled high with prawn meat and sprinkled in sesame seeds. Also on the large sharing platter were vegetable spring rolls, fishcakes and crunchy vegetables in crisp, light batter and a selection of dipping sauces. Sharing is definitely the way to go with Thai food and we continued the theme with our mains. Gang kiew wan (£11.45) was a prawn green curry with coconut milk to take the edge off the chilli heat, and bamboo shoots and courgettes for texture and crunch. The sauce was thin but full of flavour, perfect for being soaked up by boiled jasmine rice (£2.75) and soft rice noodles (£3.50). Equally enjoyable was phed gata lon (£11.95) stir fried duck on a sizzling hot platter with garlic, black pepper, oyster sauce, lemon grass and lots of other good things. The meat was very tender and juicy, with a spicy kick that cut through the richness of the duck without being too overwhelming. For those wary of ultra-spicy food, the Sukhothai menu comes with a chilli rating ranging between mild for one chilli and spicy for three. Our main courses both were judged to be ‘two chilli’ dishes and were hardly a challenge. Having said that, the som tum salad
(£6.95) received the same rating but was by far the hottest dish we sampled on the night. I love Thai salads and this winning combination of shredded papaya and carrot alongside the tomatoes, raw chillies, peanuts and dried shrimps would have perked up the most jaded taste buds. Do take note, however, despite the mid-range chilli rating, this is a hot one. Turkish delight CHRIS WILSON IS IMPRESSED BY THE WOW FACTOR AT LAVANTA. t took the best part of 20 years cooking for other people in Leeds before Orhan Girgin realised his ambition of opening his own restaurant. And while the charismatic Turkish chef/proprietor of Lavanta can’t be accused of rushing into things, his steely determination to be his own boss and run things his way ensures that this contemporary restaurant, specializing in Mediterranean and European cuisine, really does have the wow factor. It’s not flash, but from the moment you cross the threshold it is clear that much careful planning has gone into getting the look just so, with chic wooden floors and leather seats and wallpaper that seems to be a type of sandpaper speckled with gold. A team of bright young things ensure a warm welcome and attentive service while Orhan, dressed in immaculate chef ’s whites with a dazzling smile to match, finds time to pop up from the kitchen, chat to customers and make sure everything is just so. Having grown up in a restaurant in the coastal town of Mersin in Southern Turkey, he was always going to follow family tradition when it came to choosing a career, but it was one of those rare and beautiful chance meetings – a holiday romance that blossomed into the real thing – that brought him to

Leeds where he is now firmly settled with wife Debbie and son Jamie. Meanwhile the flavours of home are very much to the fore – although not exclusively, this is more a Mediterranean than purely Turkish restaurant, with a touch of Yorkshire too. After sampling homemade flat bread (tempting, but go steady) and a selection of dips and marinated olives (£1.95), the best way to get a feel for the flavours on offer is to start with chef ’s shared meze sampler (£9.95 per person). This spectacular looking black slate was artfully crammed with highlights from the meze and starter menu, plus whatever Orhan felt inspired to add, allowing us to taste calamari with homemade tartar sauce, spiced aromatic duck pastries, grilled halloumi with fennel pesto, seafood salad and lamb kofta, to name just the highlights. As well as regular trips to Turkey to stock up on supplies, Orhan takes great care to source his meat and fish from local farms and producers; he also hangs and butchers his own meat. A main course selection from the daily specials, lamb loin with cumin roast potatoes, courgette and mint raita (£18.95) proved he knows what he’s doing. Large chunks of spiced lamb had been char-grilled to tender, juicy, perfection. It was nice of them to bring the steak knife, but a butter
knife would have glided through it. Our second main was also from the specials list. King prawn, crab, chilli and garlic linguini (£16.95) was cooked in a very savoury arrabiata sauce. The seafood was sparkling fresh; the sauce had plenty of bite. There is a sensibly smart but well-chosen wine list, from which a lovely light-bodied Pinot grigio (£19.95) flowed nicely. Portions are generous so desserts may be a stretch but two strong Americano coffees (£2.45 each) and a shared portion of Eastern Mess (£6.95), a Mediterranean take on a popular English classic with pistachios, rose water and fresh berries added to the crushed meringue and thick cream, was a sweet and relatively light way to end a splendid meal in a classy setting. Glorious gyros THE MAD GREEK BRINGS THE AUTHENTIC TASTE OF CRETE TO LEEDS, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. ostas Tsiknakis said goodbye to Crete, and the family olive farm, to run a restaurant and takeaway in Chapel Allerton. It’s called Mad Greek, and watching the relentless rain one afternoon in late July as it soaked the small outdoor dining area that contains his single olive tree and the grapevine that will never allow him to open his own vineyard, I’d have said it was a fair comment. After all, who in their right mind would give up the guarantee of months of unbroken sunshine on that gorgeous holiday island for this? But having sampled the gloriously authentic food on offer at this homely establishment I’m happy Kostas swapped the southern tip of Europe for northern England. This is the most delicious and authentic Greek food I have eaten since... well, since my last holiday on Crete. Mad Greek is the real deal; the venue is slightly rough around the edges but wonderfully welcoming, with Kostas’ beaming smile and dedication to replicating the food of his homeland providing all the encouragement you should need for an immediate visit.

The menu has all the specialities you may remember from that little taverna you found on your last Greek holiday, and on sunnier days than this you’ll find an enthusiastic bunch of diners sitting outside, tucking in and watching the world go by. Cruelly denied that option, we sheltered in the small indoor dining area and savoured hearty, flavoursome Greek dishes. We began in classic style with stuffed vine leaves (£2.90) packed with tender, herby rice, and spinach and feta cheese pie (£3.20) which had beautifully light pastry and a generous filling. For mains there was no question for me, it had to be the classic Gyros special pork (£7.50). OK, so at first glance we are in the same territory as the dreaded beer-fuelled late night kebab, with tightly packed meat rotating on a spit, but banish all thought of the nasty fatty monstrosities that always bring regrets the morning after. This is the finest pork, roasted to a peak of slightly charred deliciousness and freshly carved, chewy but still moist and bursting with savoury flavour. Served with excellent pitta bread, tzatziki, fresh tomato, onion and a generous portion of kicking chilli sauce, you
don’t need a belly full of ale to find it irresistible. Spicy lamb chops (£6.50), succulent and beautifully char-grilled, were another hit and it just so happened that Kostas had finished cooking a tray of moussaka (£7.90) so it seemed churlish to refuse a portion. Consisting of slow cooked aubergine with minced lamb, seasoned with herbs and topped with melted cheese, this was much lighter than previous versions I have tried and all the better for it. Mad Greek opens from 12 noon from 12.30am every day, with deliveries from 5pm to 11pm. It’s cheerful, superb value and you’d have to be be mad not to try it. Caring For Life (CFL) is a Christian charity that provides accommodation, support and friendship to the homeless and vulnerable, not just in the short term, but throughout their lives. CFL started in 1987 after Baptist minister Peter Parkinson noticed several homeless men attending his church in Leeds. This plunged some of the Church members into a whole new form of outreach and thanks to the joint efforts of founder Esther Smith, CFL was formed. Peter bought Crag House Farm and the rest is history. What started out as little more than a farmhouse and a small amount of land has expanded into 120 acres, including an on-site cafe, restaurant, farm shop and nursery. The Granary Restaurant, Farm Shop, Café and Garden Nurseries are run as a social enterprise and your custom plays a vital role in providing a much needed income to help pastoral support workers provide love, care, and in many cases, life-long practical and emotional support. care for up to 150 people a week. Some of these people are homeless and living in emergency hostels, whilst others are at risk, living in poor conditions. The team find safe accommodation and help these individuals get back on their feet. Providing everything from help with day-today things such as food and finances, the team not only provide practical, but emotional support, for those who have no one else to turn to. The charity also runs 16 therapeutic projects to teach skills and help those in need achieve a more independent, dignified and routine lifestyle. There are farm projects such as agriculture, woodwork and helping out in the stables, but there are also other projects including art, drama and computer classes and even numeracy and literacy training. This means that when you buy beautiful flowers from their greenhouse, you’re not only donating money, you’re giving one of the gardeners, who grew them from seeds, a rewarding experience which will cultivate confidence. The Granary café and restaurant opened in 2012, and has just launched a fantastic new menu with their create-your-own breakfasts proving particularly popular. They also offer hearty lunches, sharing platters and afternoon tea – all lovingly made onsite with the farm’s ingredients.

Guests indulged in a delightful slowcooked duck egg with asparagus and pancetta, which was followed by a main dish of lamb with feta, mint peas and new potatoes, and finished with a light, summery dish of mixed berries and meringue with earl-grey cream.
