On the road to happiness... hen was the last time you went for a drive? Not a drive to the shops, or even a holiday road trip, but when you drove simply for the sake of driving, to enjoy a place or a car.

Even for those of us fortunate enough to write about cars for a living, it’s something we rarely do. We spend too long stopping to take notes, too long actively seeking rough roads to compare ride quality, and far, far too long sitting in some anonymous airport, battering the keys of a poor, defenceless laptop.

So when the man from Infiniti came calling and told me he wanted me to take a the new QX30 crossover and ‘just go for a drive’, I leapt at it. I could, I was told, choose any loop in the county. The only catch was that I had a mere two hours in which to do it.

And so I find myself crawling along the seafront in Scarborough, with the stunning expanses of the North York Moors out of sight yet still beckoning, painfully aware that I have to be back on this very spot just a couple of hours later.

the back of my mind for a moment and dutifully trundle along the front, stealing glances at the foreboding sea as I weave between the holidaymakers who seem so keen to be run over by 1.5 tonnes of approaching four-wheel-drive hatchback.

I’ve always loved the North Sea. God knows why, but I find it both hostile and welcoming – a vast, inhospitable wilderness, but a vital landmark, visible for miles, that tells me I’m back in one of my favourite places on Earth.

All too soon it’s time to turn my back on the sea, to climb one of Scarborough’s many hills and depart to the west. A couple of twists and turns later I’m free of Scarborough’s oppressive urban sprawl. The dilapidated but once-grand architecture that penned me in moments ago is now a speck in my rear-view mirror, and I’m nosing into the countryside that skirts Yorkshire’s secondfavourite National Park.

Pretty villages flash past the window. East Ayton, Wykeham and Snainton all merge into a blur of pale sandstone blocks, punctuated by the dashes of colour from the ivy-covered pubs and soggy billboards advertising events that happened last week, or perhaps last month.

Sadly, the road isn’t quite empty. Like bad pennies, a flotilla of small people carriers has surfaced, each groaning under the weight of beach balls, cheap tents and sodden swimsuits as its occupants make the most of the summer holidays.

Nevertheless, there’s still a small slice of satisfaction to be had from stringing a set of sweeping S-bends together, feeling the car change direction as I stroke the wheel from one side to the other, before having to slow

for yet another asthmatic old Ford C-Max. Eventually, though, I find myself ploughing back into the realms of proper civilisation, albeit in Pickering’s own, inimitable style. The town may not have the charm of Thornton le Dale, just down the road, but there’s something endearing about its no-nonsense feel.

Clearly it isn’t as large as I remember, though, because no sooner have I passed the sign begging me to drive carefully, than I’m turning right at the roundabout in the middle of town and climbing the steep hill up into the North York Moors.

Fifth-year geography lessons crowd my mind in a way they never could when I was revising for my exams, and I remember how the moors were formed. Originally a Jurassic sea, then a swamp, and then a sea once more, the area only freed itself from inundation about 30 million years ago. But it was the last ice age – a phenomenon many would argue is still ongoing if they saw the place in winter – that shaped the incredible scenery we know and love today.

It’s difficult to imagine the moors as they were 20,000 years ago, shrouded in a 200ftthick layer of ice, and like all the world’s natural wonders, the heather-strewn landscape left behind when the snows retreated has to be seen to be believed.

There’s no weather in which the moors look anything other than dramatic. The road is impressive enough, a ribbon of grey tarmac rising and falling in front of me, twisting and turning around huge lumps of sandstone, but it’s the view from the side windows that captivates.

Every so often, though, I feel the need to punctuate the drive by stopping in one of the

numerous gravel lay-bys and soaking up a view I daren’t always afford myself when I’m behind the wheel.

Some afternoons, I can sit on the bonnet of the car and see for miles, taking in every nuance of the rolling landscape. On other, perhaps more autumnal days, I’ll stay in my seat and look on in awe at the windswept and rain-soaked hills, which look lonely, but strangely cosy under the heavy skies.

I carry on down the open road, the car steaming ahead with as much purpose as the glacial meltwater that forged these valleys thousands of years ago, and enjoy the epic mix of fast, sweeping corners, long straights and tight, technical turns.

Then, looming atop the hill is something wholly alien. Perched at the top of Snod Hill like a spaceship that crash-landed in the most remote corner of Earth and has lain undiscovered for years, is RAF Fylingdales.

Secretively tucked away on the moors, its distinctive pyramid forms a huge part of the British and American ballistic missile early warning system, and was intended to protect the western world from the threat of nuclear strikes during the Cold War. It still monitors the sky to this day, a protective blanket shielding us from the militarisation of air and space.

That one concession to the modern world, though, vanishes behind me like a desert oasis that turned out to be no more than a mirage, and the sea I left in Scarborough appears in the distance again as the road begins to drop down towards the coast.

Poking up through the valleys before me, I see the red-roofed cottages of Whitby, and the gothic ruins of the abbey standing defiantly at the top of the cliff.

When the sun is out and the holidaymakers are in town, it isn’t easy to see where Bram Stoker found his inspiration for Dracula, but when the dark, foreboding clouds roll in and the sea churns, the ancient abbey’s haunting properties are in abundant evidence.

Driving through town is a challenge, thanks to the seemingly irrational one-way systems, the narrow roads and the volume of tourists, but the long wait at the traffic lights on the bridge offers the chance to soak up some of this historic fishing port’s atmosphere, and to glance down the cobbled streets that the great explorer Captain Cook would have known so well.

After crossing the bridge, I am met with a choice. I can climb out of Whitby on the fast main road, or turn off up a steep side road lined with drystone walls and take the more scenic, coastal route. Today, this is a nobrainer, so I hook a left and climb the hill, then drive down the narrow road along the clifftops, again stealing glances at the sea.

A couple of miles later, I rejoin the main road and head back towards Scarborough. It

isn’t quite as technical as the road across the moors, but the scenery is nearly as dramatic, and I have the added bonus of seeing the moors on my right and the sea on my left.

The tiny village of Robin Hood’s Bay passes below me, hidden by the steep valley in which it nestles, but given away by the little signposts that flash past as I negotiate the open road punctuated only rarely by uncharacteristically tight corners.

As I start to drop back down towards Scarborough, my route – and allotted time – so nearly over, I put in one final deviation, one last plot twist. Coastal Road never really affords me a view of the sea, but its countryside surroundings and loose, flowing bends do give me one last bastion of peace before I drop into the town, follow the coast under the shadow of the old castle, then look back out to sea as I retrace the wheel tracks of just two hours ago.

So as I sit here, wolfing down my fish and chips and looking out on the restless bluegrey surface of the North Sea as I formulate these words, you might think I was the lucky one. After all, I was given the time and the opportunity to simply enjoy this fantastic corner of this fantastic county. But I disagree.

We are all the lucky ones, because here in Yorkshire we have it good. I could gladly have spent my time enjoying the views in the Dales, or navigating the twists and turns of South Yorkshire’s Snake Pass, or even cruising through the flatlands of the East Riding as if I were in the British version of Vanishing Point.You just don’t get that variety in, say, Berkshire.

So next time you have a couple of hours to spare, or you want to avoid the in-laws, or you just need to get away from it all, get out there and drive.

Harvey Goldsmith: ‘we’re about family’

Festival fever LEGENDARY PROMOTER HARVEY GOLDSMITH TELLS MOLLY McGREEVY ABOUT THE FAMILY-FRIENDLY EVENT THAT BROUGHT HIM BACK TO LEEDS. or 50 years Harvey Goldsmith has managed, promoted and produced some of the world’s biggest acts and live shows.

He has worked with a whole host of household names, from Pavarotti and Bocelli through to Shirley Bassey, Queen, Elton John and Led Zeppelin, to name them all would fill a page. He also played an important role in organising Live Aid and Live 8, which raised millions of pounds for charity.

Harvey organised three hugely successful gigs at Roundhay Park in the mid eighties with sets from Madonna, The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. The shows brought thousands to Leeds and the gigs became legendary in the city.

Now Harvey has made a return to Leeds with OnRoundhay, a familyfriendly music and food festival in partnership with John Lewis, Northside caught up with the promoter to chat about the festival scene in the north.

First of all, why have you chosen to return to Leeds after all these years?

I had such a great time planning the shows at Roundhay Park before, I thought, let’s go there again. We felt it was time for another music festival in Leeds so here we are.

Do you think the north needs more cultural events to keep up with London?

There seems to be a lot of festivals in the region already. I don’t know if ours is different to them because we are aiming for a young, hip, family audience to have a great time. But we also want grandmas and grandads who bring their grandkids to also have a great time.

It’s triple focus: fantastic music, great food and a really exciting experience for kids, and they’re the next generation of festival goers.

Are small, family friendly festivals becoming more popular than bigger events for a younger crowd?

It’s not that big festivals are less popular, there’s just not enough acts

to go round. The big festivals with 30 or 40 acts need a big headliner and there’s not enough of them to go around.

That’s the problem, it’s not that people don’t want to go to festivals it’s that they’re all the same.

What makes smaller festivals so special?

Smaller festivals are more eclectic: we’re about family, others have a literature component, or a classical component or something different again, they’re drawing an audience that either didn’t go out or couldn’t go out because they had to get a babysitter.

At OnRoundhay the kids didn’t want to go home, they don’t get bored, they’re not scared, they can move around, they can see things and they can enjoy it. The queues aren’t too bad, it’s not big, and it’s not overpowering, that’s the niche.

Is snowboarding for everyone?

The food at Villa Rose is second-to-none

THE FRENCH ALPS RESORT OF SAMOENS IS THE PERFECT SPOT FOR BEGINNERS. WHERE BETTER FOR MARTIN EDWARDS AND HIS FAMILY TO TRY THE ALTERNATIVE TO SKIING? o what’s on your bucket list?

Some figures out recently suggested that learning to ski features on more than 30 per cent of the wish lists of things you’d like to do before departing this life.

This is somewhat surprising. After all, it’s hardly the most inaccessible pursuit, certainly not in comparison with other goals like skydiving, braving the Cresta Run or doing a spacewalk.

All you need is a resort that’s particularly good for beginners and a challenge. In my case it had to be snowboarding.

High noon. High up. Samoens, France.

It was here, on the sunlit expanse of snowcovered mountainside, that the generations would battle it out to see who could master the art.

In a moment of euphoria, we took up the idea advanced by our ten and 14-year-old daughters that it would be fun for the whole family to take snowboarding lessons together,

rather than the alternative, which would entail those of the older persuasion disappearing off in the general direction of Mont Blanc, having first deposited the children in ski school.

Our years of skiing experience would count for nothing as we learned from the ground up. All good clean family fun. And we would dispel the notion that boarding was the preserve of the young.

That, anyway, was the plan. In practice?

Here’s how it turned out.

Day 1. Eric the eagle. Eric was, despite his name, French, but spoke excellent English and was to be our instructor. The nice people at Villa Rose, our base for the trip, organised everything right down to the last piece of equipment.

His instruction technique involved joining hands with each of his students before setting off on what looked for all the world like a waltz down the nursery slope.

My turn came. I graduated from the waltz

to breakdancing as I crashed to the ground, from whence I was hoisted upright by Eric.

This was not going to be easy.

Snowboarding has a culture entirely of its own. Boarders seem to socialise in separate camps from the more numerous skiers, and even dress differently. Baggy ski pants, Peruvian hats and three-quarter length jackets are de rigueur.

The children showed a grim determination to succeed in their new pursuit, while I wistfully pondered the thought of a future populated by would-be sons-in-law with straggly goatee beards, who smoke roll-ups and go by names such as Mac, Jed and Maz. Day 2. “I’ve had enough! Whose stupid idea was it to do this silly snowboarding?”

The patience of the young was being sorely tested. It all seemed so simple waltzing with Eric, but actually getting the board to go in the desired direction was far from easy. We decided to calm the children with lunch at the lovely mountaintop restaurant nearby. But not before I had scythed down a ski instructor, and snowboarded through the middle of a French family’s slopeside picnic.

Day 3. Alone. Eric had done all he could for us. Now it was down to practice. Going in a straight line is not that difficult, but turning, particularly turning right, is another matter.

The tendency is to over-compensate the weight-shift and find yourself careering down the slope sideways on and facing uphill.

Day 4. “I’ve had enough! Whose stupid idea was it to do this silly snowboarding?”

There were all the signs of a full-blown tantrum. Thankfully, my wife says I don’t do it that often. Falling over is an unavoidable outcome of boarding. The difference is, it’s fiendishly difficult to get up again when you’re in your fifties. The young have no such problems. Seeing the parents admitting defeat and exchanging their boards for skis only served to urge them on.

Day 5. Triumph. Whoops and yells of

delight as they leave the nursery slopes behind and take on faster runs, flying fearlessly past the parents pottering along at a leisurely pace.

It had been a long route to what we suspected was true all along; it’s still possible to enjoy skiing at practically any age. But snowboarding? That’s a pursuit for the youthful.

If you are thinking of learning to ski or board, it’s vital to choose a destination that is suitable for beginners. A resort like Samoens ticks all the boxes. It’s a mere one hour’s drive from Geneva airport, with well-placed nursery slopes and the scope to explore a wide lift network when you’re confident enough.

In terms of accommodation, there are hotels and chalets. And then there’s Villa Rose.

All in all, it’s a far cry from ski holidays of yore.

Now that’s something that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Christmas with a difference TAKE A LIGHTER APPROACH TO CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR WITH A NUTRITIOUS, HEALTHY DIET THAT’S STILL FULL OF FLAVOUR, WRITES MOLLY McGREEVY. hampagne, canapes, chocolate, the roast, the pudding… the season of over-indulgence is fast approaching, but you don’t have to spend the festive season gorging on calorific nibbles and fizz – now is the right time to start planning a lighter approach to Christmas dining.

It’s easy to put on weight over Christmas, temptation is everywhere. On average people put on 5lbs in weight in the four-week festive season, leading to queues around the corner for gyms once January comes around. Staying in shape over Christmas can be easy, and just a few small changes can keep you on track for a nutritious, healthy diet when everyone else is reaching for the fattening nibbles.

Swap your snacks If you’re entertaining guests in the evening or cosying up in front of a festive film, swap crisps and chocolate for bowlfuls of dried fruit and nut or vegetable crisps. Make up a large batch of fruit and nut at the beginning of December so you are always prepared for entertaining.

To make vegetable crisps, thinly slice seasonal vegetables and brush lightly with olive oil and a little salt and pepper to flavour then bake until crispy. They’ll keep in an airtight container for a few weeks, so make a plentiful supply to keep you going throughout Christmas.

Katy Beskow, cook, food writer and cookery tutor, has a host of Christmas recipes that are meat, fish and dairy-free and just as luxurious as the usual festive fare.

She said: “Gone are the days of the dry nut roast as an alternative to turkey. I’ll be cooking my chestnut cassoulet with orange and rosemary crumb, served with twice-roasted thyme and garlic potatoes, maple-glazed pecan carrots and lashings of red wine gravy.”

Stay seasonal Winter is the time when root vegetables and chestnuts, two Christmas staples, are at their best, so take advantage.

Chestnuts are low in calories but rich in minerals, they’re quick and easy to make a batch of so there’s always something in the cupboard to snack on.

Replace roast potatoes with roast parsnips and fill up your Christmas dinner plate with vegetables before you pick up carbs and meat, that way there will be little room for the less healthy options.

Sprouts are not to be scoffed at either, they’re a good source of vitamin C and have plenty of fibre to keep your gut healthy during the Christmas binge.

Be careful with booze Bucks Fizz at breakfast, wine with lunch and

dinner and a Baileys for supper, alcoholic units can add up without you even noticing during Christmas, which is not only bad for your weight but will wreak havoc with your skin.

The lightest drink option is a single measure of white spirit and diet tonic, which adds up to around 60 calories, around a quarter of the amount in a pint of beer. To keep wine intake low, drink spritzers using a diet mixer, reducing not only the amount of calories you’re consuming but keeping your unit consumption low too.

Drinking water or soft drinks between alcoholic ones can reduce intake and keep your head clear the morning after. If the dreaded hangover does hit, drink plenty of water, take over the counter painkillers and rustle up an omelette full of vegetables for breakfast, the eggs will help liver function whilst the veggies will replace essential vitamins and minerals.

Get out and about It may be tempting to stay indoors and cosy up with a Christmas film marathon when it’s cold outside, but getting the family off the sofa and into the fresh air will help keep your fitness levels up during the winter months.

A brisk Boxing Day walk in the countryside or even a few hours on the dancefloor at the work Christmas do will be enough to get your heart beating and avoid piling on the festive pounds.

CHESTNUT CASSOULET WITH ORANGE AND ROSEMARY CRUMB

By Little Miss Meat Free Katy Beskow (serves four) INGREDIENTS

2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped finely 1 stalk of celery, chopped into fine chunks 1 carrot, sliced 4 leaves of cavolo nero, stalk removed and chopped roughly 2 cloves of garlic, crushed

200ml red wine (ensure vegan; Sainsbury’s, CoOperative and M&S label vegan wine) I can of chopped tomatoes 2 tsp dried rosemary 1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp dried sage 1 tsp Marmite 200ml good quality vegetable stock

200g roasted chestnuts, peeled and sliced (I use Merchant Gourmet) Generous pinch of sea salt For the orange and rosemary crumb: 2 slices of white day-old bread 1/2 tsp dried rosemary Zest of 1 unwaxed orange

METHOD

1. In a large heavy bottomed pan, heat the olive oil, onion, celery, carrot and cavolo nero over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables begin to soften. Add in the garlic and cook for a further minute, stirring to prevent the garlic from burning.

2. Turn down the heat to medium and pour in the red wine. Allow the red wine to reduce for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. When the wine has reduced and the vegetables are coated, add in the chopped tomatoes, rosemary, thyme, sage, Marmite, vegetable stock and sliced chestnuts. Reduce the heat to low and place a lid on the pan. Cook for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. In the meantime, make the crumb. Heat the oven to 180ÂşC/ Gas mark 4. Place the slices on bread in a food processor or blender and pulse on high until you get fine breadcrumbs; alternatively grate the bread into breadcrumbs. Layer the breadcrumbs flat onto a baking tray and scatter with the rosemary and orange zest. Bake in the oven for 5-6 minutes until golden, then set aside.

5. When the cassoulet is cooked, spoon into individual presentation dishes. Scatter with the crumb just before serving to ensure it stays crisp.

Back with a bang CLOSURE FOR A MAKEOVER CAUSED CONSTERNATION AMONG THE LOCALS, BUT THE CLARENDON HOTEL HAS MADE A TRIUMPHANT RETURN. he award winning Clarendon Hotel is at the heart of the tiny village of Hebden, just a couple of miles outside Grassington, and, last year when the pub was closed for renovation by new owner Lionel Strub, villagers, understandably, were concerned.

Lionel joined The Clarendon from the award-winning Mirabelle restaurant, Harrogate, and, one year on, the Clarendon still sparkles from a sympathetic restoration.

Surrounded by the rolling green hills of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, on a clear blue day it is all very postcard-like. The last of the summer sunshine floods into in a snug area packed with diners on a busy Sunday afternoon, and the bar area is full of tables occupied by local diners and drinkers, enjoying a good natter over one of the many ales and wines that are on offer.

Throw in a couple of dog bowls full of water, ivy-clad stone and large gold lettering that spells out the hotel’s name and I half expected Zac Dingle to come bounding out of the entrance, Theakston’s in hand, sporting a tweed flat cap, wellies and waistcoat.

With such a talented chef at the helm, rustic food is, obviously, the core offering, but for a chef with an extensive background in French cuisine Lionel has fully embraced British pub food.

and as we perused it a large glass of Pinot Grigio (£4.75) arrived with a splash of soda and a jingle of ice.

Eventually I opted for the quail’s egg and black pudding Scotch egg, which was a simply exquisite dish, and my partner the soup of the day. Both perfectly fitting for a Sunday.

Choosing our main course was quite hard; there was that moment when you work your way down the list and want it all. There’s a fair amount of locally sourced produce; roast loin of Yorkshire pork, Yorkshire Dales lamb shoulder and venison sausages, which had my name on it.

My partner invariably orders the beef. A splayed prime Yorkshire Dales roasted beef sirloin was roasted with freshly milled pepper and it was a triumph; pink, as asked for, tender, and paired with a little puddle of gravy, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and buttered vegetables to share.

The venison sausages were gently smoked and the accompanying horseradish mash was very subtle - that was a good thing, given that sometimes the horseradish can really overwhelm the flavours of the potatoes. It was a perfect plate-mate to the meat, along with a generous helping of homemade gravy (two courses, £17.50/threecourses, £21.50) Great attention to detail has been paid to

presentation and the Clarendon’s kitchen team is not shy of big flavours. I was hoping for tasty rustic food but I hadn’t anticipated how sophisticated it would look.

Our dessert did not disappoint; golden strawberry and pistachio profiteroles topped with ‘proper’ whipped cream and a smattering of berry compote, and it was, to put it mildly, heavenly.

Service is unobtrusive and seamless, while the cooking verges on fine dining.

The Clarendon has certainly returned with dignity and it came as no surprise when Lionel told us they have won the coveted Oliver Award for the Best Rural Pub. Well done team Clarendon and welcome back.

The taste of Kerala MOLLY McGREEVY FINDS UNUSUAL DISHES TO SAVOUR AT THARAVADU. isiting Tharavadu transports you to the heart of Kerala, a region in southern India, from the waiting staff in traditional dress through to the ornate Indian artwork and dark wood furniture.

The greeting is warm and welcoming. in Keralan, Tharavadu means ‘family who keep to tradition’, and at the restaurant of the same name there is authenticity at every turn. You won’t find the usual curries on the menu, instead expect to be educated in Keralan cuisine, inspired by Mother Nature and generations of home cooks.

Grasping the opportunity to expand my horizons, I chose the vegetarian sadya (£13.79). Translated into English as banquet, in Kerala the sadya is a variety of dishes, served on a banana leaf and usually prepared by the men of the village.

At Tharavadu, the sadya is served as a three course feast and, much to my disappointment, came on dishes, rather than on a leaf. A soup comes as the starter, which was full of classic Indian flavours, but with such a vast, unusual menu I also decided to order the mutta roast (£5.49).

One of the most popular breakfast dishes in Kerala, the dish was one of hard boiled eggs in a beautifully sweet sauce, served on a steamed appam, a pancake made with

coconut milk. It was easy to understand why so many Keralans choose to start their day with the mutta roast.

The sadya impressed most during the main course, when seven chef ’s special dishes were brought to the table on a platter, all with their own distinct aroma and flavour. One highlight was the beetroot and chickpea curry, a dish with a blend of flavours. First came the soft, sweet beetroot followed swiftly by a kick of heat, a simple but beautiful curry.

Other stand out dishes were the two kormas, which, like the starter, were more sweet than spicy but deliciously creamy and fragrant, and a soothing antidote to the heat of the beetroot and chickpea.

Following my lead, my companion also shunned her usual orders in favour of something new. To start came the kidilan kozhi (£5.69), a chicken dish that was unexpectedly very hot but cooked and spiced to perfection. For main she chose lamb, ordering the adu cheera mappas (£10.69), a dish traditionally eaten during Keralan Easter celebrations.

Cooked with spinach in a Tharavadu special sauce, the tender lamb fell apart and melted in the mouth whilst the koon mezhukku varatty, a sautéed mushroom side, was simply divine.

My sadya banquet continued into dessert with a bowl of semiya payasam, a warm, milky pudding easily comparable to rice pudding. Flavoured with cardamom and saffron it tasted almost Christmassy, fitting considering the dish is often eaten during Kerala’s own festive season and is made for the onam festivals.

Tharavadu has only been open since 2014, but has already won a plethora of awards, including the Oliver award for Best Indian Restaurant and a recommendation in the Michelin guide. For owner Siby Rose and his staff a commitment to genuine Keralan food by chefs born and raised in the region has paved the way to a quick route to success.

No passport required WHO COULD RESIST A ‘CULINARY TOUR OF INDIA’? RACHEL MARTIN BROADENS HER HORIZONS AT BENGAL BRASSERIE. ocated in the historic town of Wetherby on the banks of the River Wharfe, you will find the Bengal Brasserie. A restaurant worlds away from anything you’d find in your average Indian curry-house, and, with its sleek interior offering a high-end Indian dining experience, it has fast become the place to eat for curryloving locals since it opened four years back.

My partner and I were greeted by restaurant co-owner Malik Dobir, who, beaming with pride as he pointed out the “Best Curry House Of The Year” award for 2016 (as voted by the readers of the Harrogate Advertiser) prepared us for a “culinary tour of India, no passport required”.

Malik had prepared for us a special tasting menu, featuring dishes from all over India based on our personal spice preference. As we waited for our starters to arrive – the Bengal Special Combo for two (£9.90), consisting of chicken tikka, onion bhaji, lamb chop, prawn chotpati and nehar e kebab – fresh from the kitchen came a basket of golden poppadoms (£0.65) and assorted chutneys (£1.95).

which included mango, roasted tomato, diced onions and a chilli-spiced mint yoghurt, and, after polishing off every last morsel, our combo arrived still sizzling in the pan.

The onion bhaji was crispy with a lovely buttery flavour, and the prawn chotpatis’ were wonderfully light and delicate, with a rich, fishy filling inside. The accompanying chicken tikka was cooked to perfection and the lamb chops amply pink and tender.

Boasting sustenance and style, the menu is a mouth-watering mix of influences from across the Indian subcontinent, and I indulged in ‘just one more’ nehar e kebab several times before being presented with a selection of bespoke curries.

The Multani Lamb (£8.95) was a delight; a medium to mild curry which tosses cubes of lamb in a highly spiced sauce with herbs, mint and a touch of cream. The lamb was tender and the flavours were expansive and rich, singling out the freshness of the ingredients and the fact head chef Mohan Miah is able to use spices quite liberally without masking any of the individual flavours.

counterpart was just as tasty; a fiery curry laced subtly with cardamom, garlic and cinnamon. Our favourite dish of the night, though, was the Saag Aloo (£3.50), a lovely pan-fried patty of spinach, herbs and potatoes.

It was an explosion of exquisite tastes in the mouth, spicy, crunchy, fresh and delicious.

Accompanying the mains were a garlic (£2.95) and keema naan (£2.95) both toasted and slathered with butter, followed by a pudding of coconut ice cream (£3.35) served up in half a coconut shell.

While all this sounds like a greedy feast, this is proper sharing food, and blessedly light – miles removed from those belly-busting curries.

Thanks to the Bengal Brasserie, I have yet another excuse, as if I needed one, to come back to Wetherby and indulge in ‘proper’ Indian cuisine. And, if you don’t feel like dining out, Bengal Brasserie even delivers to the surrounding areas.

The setting is simply glorious – a traditional coaching inn perched at the top of an old-fashioned cobble-squared town complete with pretty church and ruined castle. At first glance, it would not seem totally surprising if the old Helmsley Highflyer, the 1830s stagecoach route linking Leeds and York, was still stopping to dispatch the great and the good (and the mail) three times a week.

First impressions can be deceptive, however.

It is a thriving market town in its own right and, while The Black Swan may offer the last word in old-fashioned creature comforts (including the four-legged variety as this is a dog-friendly hotel), the sustenance on offer is a celebration of all that is good about 21st century restaurant food.

There’s a new head chef, Alan O’Kane, who began his career in landmark London kitchens including The Savoy and The Capital before returning to his native North East where he played a key role in establishing some of the region’s best-loved restaurants.

He is making the most of some sensational local ingredients on a menu that celebrates the best classical and modern British cooking.

This is food worth working up an appetite for, whether it’s a gentle stroll in the hotel’s gorgeous walled garden, or something more strenuous such as the stunning seven-mile round walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey.

The Black Swan’s 3AA rosette Gallery restaurant has art from some of the region’s finest artists hung on its walls, but if you opt for the six-course tasting menu, it will be hard to look away from the dazzling succession of artfully arranged dishes.

That splash of XO sauce – a staple in Chinese cooking – was the first indication that chef likes to shake things up with the occasional hit of Oriental influence, a theme that carried on through the menu with a Thai aubergine dish and Japanese tosazu vinegar spicing up a gorgeously pink dish of Gressingham duck.

This is prime game country of course, and a tasting of raw venison was most definitely one of the stars of the night. With flavours of burnt orange, smoked coconut, beetroot emulsion and egg yolk, this was full-on modern food at its most adventurous and flavoursome.

Tasting menus are notoriously tricky to judge when it comes to portion control.

Being over-generous can make the last couple of courses a chore, but on this occasion the final taste of bitter chocolate dessert was delicious and even tinged with a little sadness that a memorable dining experience was over.

An overnight stay at The Black Swan is a

real treat after such a gastronomic feast. A nightcap in the cosy bar was the perfect way to relax and mull over the highlights of such a memorable feast, and after a blissful night’s sleep in a plush, beautifully furnished room with a garden view, a full cooked breakfast seemed like the only sensible way to start the day.

For a full flavour of what’s on offer this autumn, The Black Swan is currently offering a special one night package – A Bit Of A Dish – available Sunday to Friday until 31 March 2017 (excluding bank holiday weekends, Christmas and New Year). Leeds United return to city centre Leeds United is making a triumphant return to the city centre with the opening of a brand shop in the Merrion Centre.

The opening event saw manager Garry Monk and players Marcus Antonsson, Gaetano Berardi, Tyler Denton and Marco Silvestri cut the ribbon to declare the store open and sign shirts and autographs for fans alongside first team coach James Beattie.

Paul Bell, executive director for LUFC said: “It’s incredibly important for us to be coming back to the city centre as it will allow many Leeds United fans the opportunity to purchase official Leeds United merchandise without the need to make a specific trip to the Elland Road superstore.

Outstanding results for Ladies’ College Harrogate Ladies’ College are celebrating after an outstanding set of GCSE results, with a third of pupils achieving all A*-A grades and 92 per cent achieving A*-C. There were excellent results in subjects such as physics, statistics, French, Spanish, Latin and music where more than 70 per cent of all grades were A*A. In English Literature, 93 per cent of all grades were A*-B.

University Technical College opens University Technical College (UTC), a unique new school which partners with the region’s most advanced manufacturing and engineering companies as well as the University of Leeds has opened its doors for the first time.

UTC Leeds is the first school of its kind in the Leeds City Region to specialise in advanced manufacturing and engineering skills. The school, for 14-19 year olds, combines traditional academic subjects with hands-on work projects.

The £11m school will equip students with the skills and qualifications needed to succeed in 21st century jobs across a wide range of engineering, manufacturing and tech industries.
