SHE SPEAKS TO HANNAH SANDERS. ara Pascoe is not only an awardwinning stand-up comedian, but author, actress, singer and playwright. And her newest tour, LadsLadsLads, is one of her most honest, personal and heartfelt shows promising to be full of laughter and the occasional tear. Here, she talks about the upcoming tour, her new book ‘Sex Power Money’ out next spring and career highlights.

Tell us about your show LadsLadsLads.

It’s sometimes hard to summarise what a show is about. I wanted to give people the sense that it is fun and celebratory. It’s about having fun, trying new things in a way of being braver and more self-reliant. Some of my shows in the past have had serious aspects, theories and research but this one is lighter. It’s like a party, except only I get to talk and you have to sit there watching me. How do you feel going back out on tour?

I love going on tour. I love our nation, I love rainy days up north and cold evenings by the

seaside. It’s a luxury to get to travel for one’s job and it’s still a novelty for me. Do you see the show developing throughout the tour?

As my comedy is personal there are always updates, this show develops with recent escapades – my friends can persuade me to do anything by saying “you’ll get five minutes out of it”. Tell us about your new book Sex Power Money.

It’s about porn and sex work from a historical and evolutionary perspective. I am taking biology and the plasticity of human sexuality into account, and also laying out the whole spectrum of arguments in the debate about these aspects of our society. I’m also trying to explore power dynamics in sexual exchanges which are not as clearly defined as paying for sex – things like men paying for dinner, the abuse by powerful, rich men such as Weinstein and Trump – but with jokes like my last book, Animal. I’m talking about serious, important stuff, but keeping it accessible and stimulating rather than hectoring. Did the experience of writing a book change the way you approach comedy?

Writing a book has changed my stand-up, I think I’m funnier now because I can spend more time with ideas for the books, after a day’s writing doing a gig is a release. I only want to be silly, and it doesn’t feel as selfish if that makes sense? Comedy feels like a child’s job, you can’t believe you’re getting paid to do it. But there are huge things going on in the world and sometimes you feel a responsibility because you’ve a mic in your hand. Now my responsible side about the state of the world goes into book writing and stand-up has become a distraction from that. Tell us about your recent Radio 4 series Modern Monkey.

I wish it had been more scientific and I could’ve done more research but I kept being reminded it was supposed to be a comedy 24 Northside | www.northsidemagazine.co.uk

show and I had to write jokes about things. We recorded the show at several museums and I was so interested in everything I was learning about, especially the Foundling Museum. Do you think the world of comedy has changed much since you started?

I think audiences are changing and that directly influences the acts. Comedy used to be a crueller place, and while there is still lots of that kind of stuff (and lots of people who love it) there is a lot more diversity now. I hope that continues. Live comedy is flourishing within an economic downturn and that’s because the people making jokes are from a much wider spectrum. Their experiences are fresh and exciting and audiences want that. It’s not the individual cis, white, ablebodied man’s fault that historically, comedy clubs were so reliant on stereotype and tropes, but only one type of person’s reality was being reflected and I’m glad that’s improving. What’s one of your career highlights?

Getting to write books is a massive privilege. Whenever I do a book signing, that for me is a “pinch myself ” moment. Also selling out a West End run – those theatres are an absolute joy to play and it felt like a victory lap. I felt so much love for every person in the audience and wanted to kiss and hug everyone. I am a failed actor, didn’t get into drama school all of that malarkey, so getting to be in the West End was so special to me. What’s next for you following the tour?

I’d like to do some stand-up in America, and hopefully do some writing for TV. And another play, and I want to get a dog, and then more adventures so I can write another show.

ur region is hardly blessed with golf resorts that offer a great place to play combined with an equally enjoyable hotel to stay. Oulton Hall, near Wakefield, is an exception – 27 holes of parkland golf is complemented by a 152-bed hotel, offering pleasant surroundings, two restaurants and an excellent spa to boot. But you don’t need celebrities around to enjoy the surroundings and feel part of something special. A Piece of history THERE’S NO DOUBTING THAT THE REFURBISHED PIECE HALL IN HALIFAX IS A STUNNING ADDITION TO OUR REGION. IT WILL BE CELEBRATING ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY IN STYLE. RACHEL MARTIN LOOKS AT WHAT’S IN STORE. rade I listed, The Piece Hall, Halifax is a rare and precious thing. It is the sole survivor of the great 18th century northern cloth halls, a class of buildings which embodied the vital and dominant importance of hand-woven textiles to the pre-industrial economy of the West Riding of Yorkshire, from the Middle Ages through to the early 19th century. Dating from 1779, when it was built, The Piece Hall was the most ambitious and prestigious of its type, and now stands in splendid isolation as the only remaining example of the trade, and one of Britain’s most outstanding Georgian buildings. Re-opened on 1 August 2017 (Yorkshire Day), The Piece Hall is a contemporary leisure, retail, cultural and heritage destination, and the beating heart of a worldclass cultural quarter. The 66,000 sq. ft. openair piazza is enclosed by a mix of independent new start-ups, expanding local businesses and returning tenants. Since reopening, The Piece Hall has been

recognised by the British Guild of Travel Writers, being highly commended in the Best UK Tourism Project category, and announced overall UK winner at the Historic England Angel Awards, at which Claire Slattery, Calderdale Council’s arts and heritage manager, was also awarded Best Rescue of a Historic Building. A major new restaurant, operated by The Piece Hall Trust – a charitable organisation created to manage and sustain the future of The Piece Hall – will open later in the year, in response to considerable demand. The announcement comes as visitor numbers pass the two million mark, smashing original targets set for the first year. The new restaurant, which will be located overlooking the courtyard, has been made possible thanks to a capital grant from the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and a loan from Calderdale Council. All the profits generated by the restaurant and conference suite will be re-invested into the upkeep and cultural programme of this

historic building. The cuisine will feature the best of local produce and every effort will be made to source as much as possible from the area – from food and drink to the everyday supplies. Even the designers of the kitchen and interior, whilst national operators, have been sourced from the region. To add to this, the demand for conference and function facilities has been so strong that the Trust has also invested in an event space on the top floor – the Colonnade level – and with views across the valley, over to Beacon Hill with a glass surrounded balcony, demand for this space is already growing. As The Piece Hall celebrates its first anniversary, everyone is invited to join in the summer fun. Free family events, foodie festivals and a spectacular circus extravaganza make up a programme designed to entertain all ages. 15 September A closing summer spectacular, The Blondin Gala is a celebration of the historic moment in 1861 when international sensation Charles Blondin completed a tightrope walk across The Piece Hall. Internationally recognised UK tightrope performers, The Bullzini Family, will recreate the high wire feat for this specially commissioned show which is also part of the nationwide Circus250 celebrations. The performance will be accompanied by a gala featuring side show curiosities, vaudeville style street theatre, circus and magic acts.

Balloon Creations

8 August An opportunity to learn about perhaps the most famous English balloonists in the 19th century, Mr and Mrs Graham. The couple ascended from The Piece Hall in 1837 but are best known for their flights to mark Queen Victoria’s coronation in 1838 and during The Great Exhibition in 1851. Children’s feet won’t necessarily leave the ground, but they will learn the skills to create a special twisted balloon model that they can take home.

Communities of Calderdale

Until 12 August Communities of Calderdale is an interactive exhibition and programme of events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of St. Augustine’s Centre and highlight the rich diversity that makes Calderdale a very special place. The exhibition displays portraits and stories of people who call Calderdale home, be that through choice, birth or dispersal via the asylum system. Throughout the time, pop-up photography sessions will encourage people to add their face and stories to a growing collage. The story of St. Augustine’s Centre, a community centre who welcome all and work particularly with asylum seekers and refugees, will be also be told as they celebrate their landmark Golden Jubilee Year.

action, and once introduced into the body, it rapidly attracts the spare water to plump up the area. The treatment itself is painless, as a local anaesthetic is given beforehand. As this is a cosmetic procedure for the foot, you will only find this treatment carried out by a specialist, such as Tony. Once injected into the balls of the feet, the dermal fillers will last approximately six to twelve months. The procedure itself takes between one and oneand-a-half hours. There are minimal possible side effects with the procedure, such as post-operative discomfort and infection, although the latter is extremely rare. People who have had the treatment say they feel like they are “walking on pillows”, and that “there is no pain when wearing heeled shoes.” From special occasions such as weddings and race days, to occupations where you are on your feet day in and day out, those who wear heels or have lost padding on the balls of their feet will benefit greatly from this procedure. Devilishly decadent CLASSIC MEETS CONTEMPORARY AT THE MALT SHOVEL , WRITES CHRIS WILSON. fter a five-year gap I made my return visit to The Malt Shovel in Brearton, driving through Knaresborough and out into the snaking country roads beyond, with a certain degree of trepidation. Would new owners mean this lovely 16th century village pub and restaurant (as I remembered it), packed to the gills with rustic features, flagstone flooring, oak beams and real fires, have been given the dreaded makeover, complete with modern trappings such as fake industrial lighting? No chance. When Marik and Sylwia took over last year they were smart enough to realise that there was so much right about this gorgeous little slice of old England, the only sensible thing to do was leave well alone and maintain the high standards that had won The Malt Shovel a reputation as one of the region’s finest dining pubs in the first place. So there’s still a warm welcome, a good selection of real ales and wines by the glass to ensure that the pub side of the business remains authentic, and a charmingly relaxed atmosphere. The menu shows no shortage of sophistication but is definitely geared towards carnivores with hearty appetites, while the daily specials concentrate on fresh seafood. We snuggled into a cosy corner next to one of the fires (not much call in this scorching summer of course) and hunkered

down over our table, a converted vintage treadle sewing machine. The first indication that this was not your average pub meal came with a rather stunning amuse bouche, a smoked salmon, crème fraiche and veal roulade presented in white porcelain soup spoons on black slate. For starters my eye was drawn to a dish you don’t see on restaurant menus every day. Devilled kidneys (£6.50) always sounds like it belongs on the breakfast menu of a retro country house hotel but here, with immaculate morsels of tender kidney in a rich sauce with bruschetta, it was a devilishly decadent starter. On the other side of the sewing machine my friend Kathleen’s crispy monkfish and king prawn tempura (£7.80) served with crispy salad, sweet chilli and chilli sauce was a real winner, the freshest seafood encased in the crispiest batter. For mains I went with one of the daily specials, pan-fried hake (£16.90) with sauce vierge, greens and new potatoes. The fish was wonderfully fresh and the whole plate was beautifully balanced. Meanwhile Kathleen plumped for the wienershnitzel (£18.40), another old school classic you don’t see every day. This thin, breaded, pan-fried veal cutlet needs careful handling, as an extra 30 seconds in the pan can turn a delicate dish into old boot leather.

Given what had gone before, it was predictable that this was cooked to perfection and the accompanying dauphinoise, fine beans, lemon, capers and redcurrant jelly made for an ideal match. For desserts the superbly tart lemon posset (£5.20) with strawberry coulis and lemon sorbet and a classic affogato (ice-cream, biscotti, espresso) rounded off an exceptional meal in fine style. The Malt Shovel is well worth working up an appetite for, and if you happen to have your boots in the car, the website includes a couple of detailed country walks from the car park... well worth printing off in advance if you really want to make the most of this gorgeous pub in one of the prettiest parts of Yorkshire. Moving with the times AN INDIAN RESTAURANT THAT SATISFIES BOTH YOUR SPICE CRAVINGS AND YOUR SWEET TOOTH? STEP FORWARD BRADFORD’S KEBABEESH. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. hen I first started going to Indian restaurants in the 1990s, most had a similar approach; traditional Bollywood-style music, dark hued décor and all the classic curries. We’d never order desserts, largely because there was just the odd pre-packaged children’s ice cream. But nowadays, Indian restaurants are doing much more to stand out in a saturated market – especially if they are close to the many curry houses in the hot-spot of Bradford. Kebabeesh couldn’t be further from those dated cliches. It may have opened during the Indian restaurant boom, in 1971, but it is always moving with the times. It’s had a light and airy restaurant and ultra-cool conservatory with exposed hanging lightbulbs for some time, but now the branding and signage has changed to reflect the sleek and stylish look inside. Not only does it look the part, Kebabeesh also offers something you probably won’t find in any other curry house – a tempting selection of patisserie desserts – all made by a specially appointed pastry chef, owner Jay Durrani assured me. These desserts were the first thing my dad and I noticed in the see-through fridges as we arrived, and I made a mental note of the

chocolate cake for later. Once settled in the conservatory, we admired the ceiling of white branches, dressed in fairy lights. It’s these small touches that really make a difference. Flicking through the streamlined menu, Kebabeesh has a good mix of classic dishes and specials. I decided to have a break from the norm, and ordered the grilled mushrooms (£3.50), marinated in an aromatic ginger and lemon sauce. Having a change paid off and I’d certainly be ordering them again. A carnivore through and through, Dad had the Kebabeesh special (£6.95), a mixed starter made up of chicken boti tikka, masala fish, seekh kebab, a lamb chop and an onion bhaji. It was a generous starter, which would easily fill two people, but Dad had brought his appetite, and he’d soon finished the lot. I continued down the menu less travelled and ordered a palak paneer (£7.95) as my main, while Dad had a good old, chicken tikka masala (£8.95). My paneer came in an earthy sauce with spinach and fenugreek, whereas Dad’s masala was creamy with a spicy aftertaste. Both were complemented by a classic garlic nan (£2.65) and pilau rice (£2.20). We’d almost forgotten desserts, when our

waiter brought over a cake stand filled with everything from fruit tarts to cheesecakes. I chose a tall and chocolatey slice of Oreo cake (£4.95) and Dad had a banoffee pie (£4.95) – both were presented beautifully with drizzles of caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream and tasted even more so. Blooming marvellous HANNAH SANDERS DISCOVERS THE BOTANICAL DELIGHTS OF THE POTTING SHED. hen you think of a garden shed, a rickety old thing tucked away in the undergrowth, forgotten and unloved, may spring to mind. But, not all sheds are like this; some are works of art covered with cascading vines, painted in the brightest of colours with a stunning view of blooming foliage… as I discovered at The Potting Shed. This chic garden retreat, nestled in the picturesque spa town of Harrogate has skilfully brought the outdoors inside with its rustic charm and unique sense of style. Vintage furniture, an abundance of greenery, leaf patterned wallpaper and lampshades filled with garden tools all create a novel al fresco vibe - it was as if I fell down the rabbit hole to a restaurant that was in full bloom. We were seated in the sunflower shed, and as we perused the menus, the little details such as plant pot cutlery holders and delicate vases tucked away on the shelves brimming with plants caught my eye, making me feel as if we were enclosed in our very own private garden. After much deliberation (and some advice from our waitress) we ordered halloumi fries (£6.25), maple-mustard chipolatas (£4.25) to start.

The salty halloumi fries dressed in Mediterranean spices, drizzled with a fresh pomegranate molasses were moreish, and perfectly complemented the sweet pineapple flavour of the Gin Thyme cocktail (£7.45), while the mini sausages were a perfect indulgence, marinated in maple syrup with just the right amount of spice from the Dijon mustard. For mains, my other half had his eye on the chicken, red onion and sun blushed tomato pizza (£9.50), later claiming it was one of the best he’s ever had; crisp savoury dough matched the succulent meat and rich cheese. Looking for a meal to match the glorious sunshine, I opted for something lighter with the shed chicken kebab (£10.95). Served on a garlic flat bread with minty chopped salad and piled high with a generous portion of succulent chicken, and coated in a sweet chili sauce, the dish combined all the right flavours for a summer’s day. Desserts proved impossible to resist, and once my eye caught the peanut butter fudge cake (£5) I was sold. Combining two of my favourite things; peanut butter and fudge, the cake was rich, delightfully gooey and full of flavour.

The toffee popcorn sundae (£4.95) was a welcome refreshment, as with hearty scoops of vanilla ice cream, drizzled in salted caramel sauce and finished with toffee popcorn it was a sweet lover’s dream - and one my partner finished in record time. The Devonshire Arms YORKSHIRE VEAL TARTARE 500g Yorkshire Veal Fillet (room temperature) 3 Whole ceps 25g Exmoor caviar 80g Blue pep nasturtium leaves 300g Rapeseed oil 4 Pullet eggs 4 Breakfast radish Warm 150g of oil to 62ºC. Separate the eggs, discarding whites, and place yolks into the warmed oil for 10 minutes. Set aside until ready to serve. To make the Nasturtium oil, blend the

Nasturtium leaves (keep some back for presentation), with the remaining oil until smooth, pass through muslin cloth to produce a flavoured oil. Cool. Prepare veal by removing sinews and dice to around ¼ cm. Season with sea salt, freshly cracked white pepper and add enough nasturtium oil to lightly coat the veal. Next, using a mandolin or a sharp knife, slice both the radish and the ceps just thick enough to keep their natural shape. Placing the tartare in the middle of the plate, strain off the yolk using a spoon onto a cloth, and carefully place a yolk on top of

George’s Great British Kitchen GRILLED SEABASS WITH SWEET POTATO, CHICKPEA AND SPINACH CURRY AND SMOOTH MANGO CHUTNEY 400g (drained) Chickpeas 50ml Vegetable oil 10g Cumin seed 10g Brown mustard seed 250g Diced onions 400g Sweet potato (cut into 2cm, roughly dice) 10g Green chilli 25g Jalfrezi spice 30g Ginger paste 30g Garlic purée 500g Chopped tomatoes 100g Spinach (shredded) 12g Salt 10g Coriander (chopped) Open the chickpeas and wash off any excess water. Heat a deep-sided frying adding the vegetable oil, cumin and mustard seeds – fry until the mustard seeds begin to pop then add the onions frying until soft and turning golden. Add sweet potato and cook for further 10 minutes. Add garlic and ginger and cook for two

minutes then add the green chilli, jalfrezi spice and tomatoes, turn the heat down to low and simmer gently for 25 minutes until fragrant and thick and sweet potatoes are cooked. Add the spinach and cook for a further five minutes until wilted. Lastly add salt and coriander, stir and remove from the heat. Fold through chickpeas. If not using straight away, store in the fridge for up to five days or freeze.

Weigh out the ingredients, put in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for 30 minutes. Blend the mix and push through a fine sieve. Place back into a clean pan on the stove and reduce on a low heat until thick (coats the back of the spoon). Pass through fine sieve and cool. The Cleveland Tontine TASTE OF RASPBERRY PISTACHIO AND LAVENDER Raspberry Delice 50g Italian meringue 200ml Double cream 100g Raspberry purée 2 Gelatine leaves

the remaining third of raspberry coulis, place in pan and heat until the gelatine has dissolved. Once dissolved allow to cool slightly then fold in to the cream and meringue mix. Place in lined tray and refrigerate for 12 hours or until set.

Fold two-thirds of the raspberry purée into the ready-made Italian meringue. Lightly whip the double cream. Soak gelatine leaves in cold water until soft, drain and squeeze out excess water. Add to

Shake well then fill a cup half way with the aerated mix and microwave for one minute. Leave the sponge to cool then rip into

pieces and place in a dehydrator for 12 hours at 70 degrees till crisp (you can use an oven if you do not have a dehydrator). Lavender Ice Cream 50g Egg yolks 125ml Milk 125ml Cream 25g Sugar 5g Fresh lavender Pick off the lavender buds leaving no woody stalk and bring milk, cream and lavender to the boil. Mix the sugar and egg yolks. Then add the milk mix to the egg mix, return to the pan and cook the anglaise out. Pass the anglaise through a fine chinois, cool and churn. Blanch the peas for about 2 minutes or until just cooked, drain and submerge the peas in the iced water. When cool, shell the individual peas and mix with chives and lemon juice when serving. Do not do this in advance as the peas will turn brown from the acidity.

Pea purée 300g Frozen peas 3g Salt 15g Sugar 50g Water Thaw the peas and blend with the remaining ingredients. Crab mix 300g White crabmeat 75g Brown crabmeat 15g Chives (finely chopped) 1 Lemon (zest and juice) 1 Lime (zest and juice) 3g Celery salt 15g Dill (finely chopped) 25g Mayonnaise

Combine all the ingredients together, add additional seasoning and chilli if needed.

Buttermilk and horseradish granita 300g Buttermilk 3g Salt Either 50g fresh horseradish Or 20g horseradish sauce

Fresh peas 400g Fresh peas (in shell) 10g Chives (finely chopped) 1 Lemon (zest and juice)

Transfer the ingredients to a blender and blend till smooth. Allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes then strain through a sieve and freeze. When serving, scrape with fork to create the granita.

Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Whilst you are waiting, pod the peas and set up a bowl of iced water to cool the peas in.

Another string to World Island’s bow In its second year, World Island is the creation of promoters Super Friendz, and its 2018 line up boasted the likes of Sampha, Loyle Carner and Alfa Mist, plus an equally high calibre of after-party bookings. The warm weather was fittingly soundtracked by Carmody’s feel good folk-pop, Yellow Days’ dreamlike lo-fi indie and Alfa Mist’s mesmerising beat-making. Masego proved to be the surprise standout; the multi-instrumentalist rose to fame last year when his improvised performance of saxophone-laced Tadow with FKJ racked up over 37 million views on YouTube. Sunday was the day of jazz, with Laura Misch, Nubya Garcia, Ezra Collective, Moses Boyd and Yazmin Lacey on the bill. Jazz has seen nothing short of a renaissance in the past year, with young British artists breathing new life into the genre, combining it with electronica, afrobeats and hip-hop. Unknown Mortal Orchestra brought the classic festival vibe and it was clear that for many revelers, they were the main event. And closing the festival with the eclectic Gilles Peterson was an apt choice.

Parents, staff and friends of Harrogate independent prep school, Belmont Grosvenor enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing to raise thousands of pounds for charity. Belmont Grosvenor School’s annual summer ball, organised by the PTA, was held in a marquee on the ‘Head’s Lawn’ at the co-educational school in Birstwith. Guests at the black-tie event enjoyed a Slingsby Gin and Prosecco drinks reception on the terrace at Swarcliffe Hall before moving inside the marquee for dinner provided by The Good Food Story and live music from The Ordinary Men. This year, pupils, parents and staff at the Harrogate prep school have been supporting local charity The Rainbow Fund, which helps poorly, disabled and disadvantaged children across Harrogate. Money raised at the Ball will also go towards a PTA-funded project at Belmont Grosvenor to upgrade the playground equipment across the school’s 20-acres of grounds.
