COLUMN t has been such a thrill this week to host our friends from across the Atlantic, who are joining us for this year’s Black Diamond Ball. Wentworth Woodhouse has several historic links with the US; the two Rockingham Counties (one in New Hampshire and one in North Carolina) are both named after the Marquis of Rockingham who lived at Wentworth Woodhouse. I was lucky enough to travel to North Carolina in 2024 to meet some of our supporters, many of whom live in the town of Wentworth there. Sharing our histories is a wonderful way of building international partnerships. As part of our ten-year birthday celebrations in 2027 we shall be launching a USA-based foundation in Charleston, South Carolina, aiming to harness support for our work whilst also encouraging more US visitors to our explore our region. The Black Diamonds Ball is not the only event oozing with glamour this year; from 13-15 November the Goldsmiths North show is coming to Wentworth "!! ! ! Everybody buying a ticket to visit the house will not only enjoy the new headset tour of the State Rooms, but they will also enjoy full access to this stunning show. Silversmithing is a traditional heritage craft and one that we hope to support through our new Heritage Skills Centre of Excellence which will open in 2028. Don’t miss out, we expect the show to be hugely popular, with visitors certain to kick-start their Christmas shopping there. The news is now out, this Christmas, Wonderland is coming to Wentworth Woodhouse (1 December 2026 and until State Rooms will be transformed into Alice in Wentworth Wonderland, where you can follow Alice down the rabbit hole and discover a magical world ! ! ! characters and wonderful surprises. Step into a world where nothing is quite as it seems and embark on your own adventure through the grand rooms of Wentworth Woodhouse. Wander through the Room of Doors, discover the Hall of Hearts, follow the trail of Drink Me and Eat Me, and make your way Down the Rabbit hole before arriving at the wonderfully whimsical Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Look out for curious details, try your hand at Wonderland-inspired games, dress up and capture plenty of magical photo ! ! your adventure by. On selected dates, the Wonderland

experience will become even more immersive, with live actors and interactive moments creating a wonderfully curious atmosphere as you explore the transformed State Rooms. But the adventure doesn’t stop there! We have a programme of Alice-themed activities taking place throughout the season, including our Mad Hatter’s Tea Party (family friendly or adults only!) and Alice-themed storytelling sessions, alongside a packed programme of events as part of Winter at Wentworth. From festive workshops (see Wreathmaking and Festive Table Decoration workshops), to Christmas shopping at Goldsmiths North, plus special performances, including A Christmas Carol by Gerald Dickens, the great-greatgrandson of Charles Dickens, there’s plenty more to discover. A new chapter for BESPOKE MEDSP PA in Horsforth

Dr Magdalena Bejma on 12 years in aesthetics, the team behind the clinic and building again with purpose. espoke MedSpa has a new home in Horsforth – and for Dr Magdalena Bejma, the move marks an exciting next chapter for a clinic already recognised as one of Yorkshire’s best. 2006 and is a General Practitioner as well as an advanced aesthetic doctor. Her medical career included hospital work and dermatology in Leeds. She has spent the over past twelve years in medical aesthetics, building her experience through clinical practice, continued training and teaching nationally and internationally other practitioners. Over time, Dr Bejma has become a personal brand in her own right, known for a thoughtful approach to aesthetic medicine and results that enhance rather than change someone’s natural features. “I want patients to feel listened to and to receive honest advice,” she says. “The right treatment is diffferent for everyone – and sometimes the right advice is to wait or not to treat at all.” Bespoke MedSpa’s treatment menu includes doctor-led aesthetic treatments

and injectables, regenerative skin treatments, advanced laser and energybased procedures, women’s wellness and private GP P services. Technologies include Sciton BBL HERO and MOXI, Morpheus8, advanced CO2 laser and XERF radiofrequency. The team draws on this range to create treatment plans around each patient’s needs, with clinical assessment guiding what is appropriate. Magdalena is quick to point out that the clinic clinic’ss reputation belongs to the whole team. Patients experience Bespoke welcome to consultation, treatment and aftercare. “The right team makes all the diffference,” she says. “Everyone brings their own skills and experience, but we share the same priorities: patient safety, kindness and making sure each person feels supported.” The team brings together clinicians and skin professionals who share knowledge, support one another and keep learning. Magdalena believes that a welcoming, consistent experience depends on everyone working together – not just the person delivering a treatment.

Like many women in business, Magdalena’s professional journey has been shaped by personal challenges as well as ambition. Personal setbacks afffected the direction and pace of the business, giving her the chance to pause, reassess and decide how she wanted to rebuild. “I had to step back, think about what mattered most and decide how I wanted to move forward,” she says. “I came through that peri period iod with a stronger sense of purpose and a real appreciation for the people who stand beside me.” “Bespoke is bu uilt by all of us,” she says. “I’m proud d of what we have created together, and exccited about what we can do next in Horsfforth.” Bespoke MedS Spa Leeds, LS18 5N NX pa.co.uk bespokemedsp

Much Ado About SALT CELLARS Forced Entertainment Brings Shakespeare to Doncaster.

heatre lovers in Doncaster are in for an extraordinary treat this autumn as pioneering performance company Forced Entertainment brings its globally renowned Selected Works: Table Top Shakespeare to Cast. Following their landmark 40th anniversary, the international awardwinning ensemble is turning Shakespeare on its head, stripping the Bard’s classic plays down to the raw power of storytelling. Sitting at a simple one-metre table, a single performer uses ordinary household items - from salt shakers to teacups - as stand-ins for iconic characters, creating miniature dramas that are funny, accessible, and surprisingly moving. ! ! Etchells.

T

“It’s an intimate, playful celebration of what theatre can be using minimal resources. Audiences don’t need prior knowledge of Shakespeare to engage with it.”

*** When you’re thinking of what makes a typical theatre show, a few things a clear storyline, realistic characters brought to life on stage by a team of Forced Entertainment, all of the above is something to avoid. They’ve spent over four decades questioning our understanding of theatre, and creating playful, comical, sometimes improvised performances that are anything but typical. Their performance work Selected Works: Tabletop Shakespeare has been a project over 10 years in the making, in which Forced Entertainment aimed to tell the stories of all 36 Shakespeare plays, using ordinary objects from salt and pepper pots to sponges, as the actors, and a simple table as the stage. Out of this full canon, Forced Entertainment have picked a number of plays as part of Selected Works for this regional UK tour, visiting venues around Yorkshire, with performances presented as double bills - audiences can expect to experience a tragedy and the comedy, right after each other. Tim Etchells, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Forced Entertainment explains; “It’s about the magical transformation that occurs when the audience invests in these objects as characters. Whether it’s red and green objects for the Montagues and Capulets, or items scavenged from a shed to give Macbeth a brutal feel, it relies on that fancy period text. You need someone in

the room, creating a world with what’s at hand.” access, with the original verse a barrier for many audiences. With Selected Works, Forced Entertainment aims to knock that barrier down. The performers use language to describe the events of the plays, condensing down epic narratives into a fun, accessible, one hour-long performance. “It’s an intimate, playful celebration of what theatre can be using minimal resources,” Tim notes. “Audiences don’t need prior knowledge of Shakespeare to engage with it.” Forced Entertainment have developed their own very unique way of working as a team, where every member contributes to the whole. “We are a particular breed of theatre makers,” Etchells says. “We work in the studio; we make things in the rehearsal room. We are terrible at knowing much in advance. My role is to be on the outside, watching, while everyone else is in the middle of the joyous confusion. That gives me a different insight.”

“We tend to try a lot of different alternatives as we’re making a show. We say we’re eliminating possibilities from our inquiries! You do the work to the point where it becomes clear what the direction needs to be. It’s almost like you haven’t made a decision - the work has made it for you.” It’s a philosophy that has served them well over four decades - and has allowed audiences around the world to truly feel a part of the performance on stage: “I’m interested in creating performance spaces where the audience has a lot of imaginative work to do. I don’t want to lecture. I don’t want to tell people of energy that is funny, unsettling and playful, where the audience negotiates the politics, the emotion, and the reality of what’s in front of them.” Tickets (from £12) are strictly limited for these intimate performances, and can by calling 01302 303959 or online at castindoncaster.com

A building with a HEARTBEAT

By Dr Rebecca Grant, founder of Rejuvenair, a holistic healing sanctuary where wellness meets transformation. y journey into natural medicine began more than 20 years ago and it started with my own experiences of healthcare and feeling that something was missing. There were times when I felt unheard. Symptoms were being addressed individually, but nobody seemed to be asking the deeper question – why was That question led me on a journey to understand the human body in a way that went far beyond symptoms and diagnoses alone. I became fascinated by how everything connects, from our immune

system and hormones to our gut, nervous system, cellular health, emotional wellbeing and the way we respond to stress, illness and our environment. This curiosity eventually led me to complete a PhD in Natural Medicine in 2022, alongside my work in psychotherapy and as a yoga teacher. Throughout that journey, my interest in human biology, psychology, recovery and health optimisation continued to grow. But there was one question I kept coming back to. Why wasn’t there somewhere people could go to access everything they

needed to support their health and brought together nutrition, movement, emotional support, physical therapies, recovery technologies and a deeper understanding of what might be people could feel supported, educated and empowered. Most importantly, a place where we asked why symptoms were occurring rather than simply looking for another tablet to suppress them. That vision became Rejuvenair Sanctuary.

The ballet is set to captivate audiences in Leeds from 15 December to 2 January, with a 20-show Christmas run at Leeds Grand Theatre. Patron Kate Fenton talks to Richard Abbey about the upcoming Whitby Lit Fest, a four-day celebration of the written word.

PREVIEW hitby’s gothic past and links to Bram Stoker’s Dracula often %$#"$! ! $ ! ! ! $! seaside town’s links to literature stretch much further and will be celebrated at the Whitby Lit Fest from 19-22 November. The four-day festival, launched last year, exists to celebrate Whitby’s heritage and this year has over 50 events featuring bestselling authors, broadcasters, actors, historians, poets and performers. Perhaps the most recognisable name appearing at the festival is Hugh Bonneville; the actor – best known for starring in Paddington and Downton Abbey – will be talking about his latest children’s book, Rory Sparkes and the Spy Who Loved Tea, at the Whitby Pavilion on 21 November.

But you can also see the likes of John Boyne, Ann Cleeves, Joanne Harris, Si King, Greta Scacchi, Corinne Bailey Rae and many more. The festival is very much a community initiative and was set up by a steering committee of local businesses including The Whitby Bookshop and Hetty & Betty alongside North Yorkshire Council Libraries, Visit North Yorkshire and English Heritage with support from Cause UK Public Relations and Hello Technology. Novelist, former BBC radio producer and Whitby resident Kate Fenton was approached by the festival organisers to become patron, an honour she was surprised by but very honoured to accept. !# ! ! ! !% " ! PREVIEW Another interview with a royal connection is David Lascelles, the Earl of Harewood, who has written a book about his father who was imprisoned at Colditz towards the end of the Second World War. “He was part of a long string of aristocrats who were kept together because the Nazis thought they might be a bargaining card,” says Kate. “As Germany collapsed, Hitler issued orders that they should be executed but a prominent Nazi stepped in and saved them. For his book, David went to Germany and actually this person’s family.” Kate has also curated her own interview and will be speaking to Louisa Young who is continuing the literary legacy of Elizabeth Jane Howard and writing the sixth instalment of The Cazalet Chronicles. She will also be speaking to Sally Coulthard about her book, A Brief History of the Coast in 100 Objects, and local author Jess Kidd, who’s novels focus around a former nun-turneddetective. Vastly experienced, Kate’s interviews are meticulously researched and structured and generally last for an hour, with the last 20 minutes often opened up “You really have to think about the shape of the interview, where you want to take it to and identify the areas that have real interest to the audience,” explains Kate. “Sometimes writers get hung up on particular things so you need to shepherd them and give them the opportunity to shine. “The whole point of having a good

aking it in the music industry has never been easy, just ask anyone who has anyone who has done the pubs/clubs/live venue circuit hoping to get their big break. But for upcoming artists today it’s perhaps that bit harder, with less emphasis on physical sales and more on playing live and social media presence. Investment from record labels is understandably not as big and many artists have to engineer their own success before executives stand up and take notice. Sam Scherdel is the perfect example. After years of playing in bands around the South Yorkshire region, the

M

Mexborough-born singer-songwriter got his big break just over a year ago when his self-penned track, Somewhere in the Middle, went viral on TikTok, achieving a million views in just four days. As of September of this year, it has now exceeded 3.3million Spotify streams and has seen Sam’s growth on the platform sky-rocket. TikTok and Instagram, as well as other social media platforms, have now become routine for modern musical artists who now have to be much more than musicians, but content creators too and it’s something Sam has had to get on board with.

“I wasn’t comfortable doing it but I am now,” Sam explains over a cup of coffee in the centre of Doncaster. “The turning point for me was getting comfortable doing it, that’s when I started to see the results. Instead of doing one music video you do 40 tiny ones, that’s the way the industry has gone.” The explosion of Somewhere in the Middle has led to a year of what Sam can only describe as ‘life-changing’. The song was picked up by ITV’s Love Island and was used in one of their more tender moments on screen, which elevated Sam to an even larger audience.

INTERVIEW “The Love Island thing was a ‘pinchme’ moment,” beams Sam. “We heard whispers it was going to happen but we didn’t know when because it gets edited on the day. We got three hour’s notice and were actually at a gig in Newcastle so had to watch it when we got back.” And Love Island were not the only ones to pick up on the song. The Hull NHS choir, who have previously performed for King Charles III, had shortlisted the track as a potential choir song and went on to create their own arrangement independently. When a clip of the performance began circulating on TikTok, Sam discovered it and immediately recognised its potential to grow into something bigger. “As a choir, we always tag the artists whose songs we sing on social media 9876543621670/6./-,6+-1764-72176*0)6/./-6 replied,” says choir leader, Lucy Vere. “He told us how moved he was by our arrangement, and incredibly, within just six weeks of that original tagged video, we found ourselves in the studio with him recording our version together.” After initial rehearsals in a hospital education centre, Sam and his band brought the track to life at Yellow Arch 578(2)1'650/&+/%(64%)$#12(/6"/-!8-,6 Prize-nominated producer Colin Elliot. The result is a spine-tingling, strippedback but expansive version that captures the raw emotion of the original in a completely new way. “I was just stunned seeing the song grow beyond anything I’ve ever released before,” adds Sam. “Honestly, it brought a tear to my eye hearing it performed like this. EATING OUT

Grab a slice of THE ACTION

It’s renowned for its exceptional pizzas but there’s much more to Doncaster’s Da Leo, writes Ross Heppenstall. f a truly authentic taste of Italian cuisine in a delightful setting is your thing, then a visit to Da Leo is simply manna from heaven. This highly-rated, family-run establishment in the heart of Doncaster is celebrated for transporting diners to the heart of Italy with its vibrant atmosphere and commitment to traditional Italian food. The restaurant is particularly renowned for its exceptional pizzas, featuring fresh, thin dough and high-quality toppings. But Da Leo offers so much more with an extensive menu which boasts authentic ingredients. The friendly and attentive staff are famed for their outstanding service, which complements the Italian decorations and music that complete the immersive dining experience. Visiting Da Leo on an autumnal Tuesday evening, my dining partner and I were not sure what to expect, having never been here before. Even before we stepped through the doors, the allure of this establishment was clear to see. It felt welcoming from the outside and even more so once we entered and were immediately greeted by a member of staff. We had booked a table for 7pm and the always a telling sign of its popularity. Da Leo guarantees diners a culinary journey crafted with passion, with every dish ensuring a memorable dining experience. As one would expect, there is a fantastic drinks menu including a range both of which we sampled as we pored over the starters menu. The list of starters is also a sight to behold with a huge choice of traditional Italian dishes. These include garlic bread, fungi alla crema (creamy garlic mushrooms),

There are well over 20 starters, with other highlights including Carpaccio Di Bresaola (thinly sliced beef on a bed of rocket salad), Gamberetti All’Aglio (King prawns sauteed in a garlic butter with wine sauce). There is also Gamberi Piccanti (King prawns sauteed with garlic and chilli in tomato sauce) and Frittura Du Calamari Gamberi (deep-fried crispy calamari rings and king prawns served with garlic mayo). The average price for most starters is £8.95, which represents great value as we were about to discover. I opted for the Antipasto All Italiana, a selection of cured meats, cheese and grilled vegetables for one at £12.95. This is also available for two at just £19.95, making it perfect for sharing, but my friend ordered deep-fried halloumi served with sweet chilli sauce (£7.95). Both our starters were delicious and really whetted the appetite for our mains. Here, there is a fantastic choice of every traditional Italian dish you could ( & & ! & !& ' & )&$)( !)( The pasta and risotto offerings include penne al arrabbiata, penne pesto, penne pollo, carbonara, bolognese, lasagne, salmon, risotto and four ravioli dishes. Pizzas generally range from £12.50 to £16.90, although a ‘Make your own’, which includes four toppings of your choice, is a tantalising option at £17.90.
