stunning Grade II listed Old Town Hall building, serving up the freshest pizzas using their secret sourdough recipe. Add to that SALT’s impressive range of locally brewed lagers and beers and I’m sold.

Another project close to my heart is the Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards, which will take place at Leeds Dock on 13 October with over 700 guests attending and I’m privileged to be involved this year in support of St James’ Place Charity Foundation. It’s a brilliant way to acknowledge some of the amazing things these children have done to inspire others. Watch this space for more on this one.

1.Placetheflourandsaltinalargebowl.Useyourfingertipstorubthebutter andmargarineintotheflouruntilyouhaveamixturethatresemblescoarse breadcrumbswithnolargelumpsremaining.Trytoworkquicklysothatitdoes notbecomegreasy.Measureoutfourtablespoonsofcoldwater.Stirinjust enoughofthecoldwatertobindthedoughtogether.Donotovermix.Wrap thedoughinclingfilmandchillinthefridgefor10-15minutesbeforeusing.

2.Forthefilling,heattheoilinasaucepan,addtheonion,celery,carrot,garlic andsomesaltandpepper,andcookgentlyfor10-15minutesuntilsoft.Add thelentilsandstock,seasonwell,thenaddthebayleafandthyme,ifusing. Stirwell,coverandsimmergentlyforabout20minutes.

3.Addthesquashandsimmerforanother20minutes,oruntilbothlentilsand squasharetender.Stirinthebalsamicvinegarandthemustardandcheckthe seasoning.Setasidetocool.

4.Rolloutthepastryonalightlyflouredworksurfacetoabout3mmthick. Usingaplateoracaketinasatemplate,cutoutfour20cmcircles;youmay havetogatherupthetrimmingsandre-rollthemtogetyourfourthcircle.

5.Spoonthefillingontoonehalfofeachcircle.Brushthepastryedgeswitha littlewater,foldtheotherhalfofthepastryoverthefillingtoformahalf-moon shapeandcrimpwelltoseal.

hintofspice-theperfectlatewinter warmer.Acrossthetable,mywifetucked intoaplateofsalmongravlax,beetroot tartare,seedcracker(£10.50),pairedwith aRevelesteAlbarino(£5.50)fromSpain. Itwasafreshandflavoursomeplatewith thecoolwhitewineaddingextrazing.

FormaincourseItookadvicefrom ourwaiterandoptedfortheKaldolmar, aSwedishdishoffarce-stuffedcabbage leaves,goldensyrupgravyand cranberriespickledwithhibiscus(£19). Thiswasacompletelyvegandish,the farcehavingbeenmadewithkidney beans,pumpkinseeds,sunflowerseeds andspices.Weirdlyithadareal meatinesstoitwiththesubtleflavours allworkinginharmony.Sweetnesscame fromthegravyandcranberries,further offsetbyacrispWhiteRabbitRiesling (£6.50).Itwasatastydish.

MywifechosethebraisedYorkshire duckleg,celery,fennel,shisoandcream sauce(£22),whichispairedwithafullbodiedBarberad’AstiFiulot(£7).The aniseedandmint-likeflavoursworked reallywellwiththerichduckwhilstthe creamsauceaddedatouchofluxury.We alsosharedsometenderstembroccoli, finegreenbeans,garlic,chilli(£3.50).

If you’ve driven down Ripon Road recently you’ve probably noticed the new kitchen showroom that has recently opened. Designer Kitchen Direct is a business that is new to the area but one that is established in other parts of the country. Designer Kitchen Direct opened their first showroom seven years ago in Sheffield with the aim of establishing themselves as the region’s first choice for fitted kitchens, bedroom and office furniture. They have since opened further outlets in Barleston, Staffordshire and Newton Aycliffe, Country Durham, where they also have a factory. With their own factory, Designer Kitchen Direct manufacture their own kitchens, enabling them to offer a truly bespoke service – customers can choose any size, any style, and any colour, including a full range of Farrow & Ball colours. “Our prices beat everyone else for this level of quality and finish,” said managing director Dawn Rayner. “Basically we are offering designer, British-built rigid build kitchens at factory direct prices.” Dawn started out in the kitchen business in 1977 as an office junior, then trained in design before becoming a partner. She left the industry in 2003 but saw her passion reignited when her daughter-in-law Mary identified that there was a real need for bespoke designed kitchens but at a price that was affordable to the majority of people. And so Designer Kitchen Direct was born. Mary has a degree in Interior Architecture, trained in kitchen design

in 2003 and for the past 20 years has developed a new way of approaching design. “In any design, firstly I need to know how people live and use their kitchen, what are their main priorities and how they use their space in the home,” she said. “With this greater level of understanding I am able to design by function rather than just by aesthetics.” All cabinets and drawers will stand the test of time – they have 18mm solid backs and sides to hold them square, providing a firm base for high quality doors. Designer Kitchen Direct offer free, no obligation advice and are happy to come out and measure up, draw plans, and work out cost options for your new kitchen, working within your budget. They will also produce a 3-D walk through of your new kitchen so you really get to feel what it will be like.
