Summer 2026 has been giving us it all. Heatwaves, festivals, lots of alfresco dining and let’s not forget the FIFA World Cup - what a ride that was! Leeds is absolutely booming and the city’s social calendar has barely had a day off.
One of the biggest talking points has to be the debut of Roundhay Festival. What a weekend. Not only was it a huge moment for Leeds, but it showcased exactly why Roundhay Park is one of the country’s most spectacular outdoor event spaces. I’ll admit, though, I’ve reached the stage in life where back-toback festival nights require military-level recovery planning.
Friday belonged to Mr Worldwide himself. Pitbull brought the party, and what a sight, seeing thousands of bald caps bouncing along to every banger across Hill 60. It was one of those brilliant sights that you only get at festivals. Then came Lewis Capaldi, providing the perfect antidote to the previous night’s high-energy chaos bringing the chill vibes with everyone singing along to his biggest hits. I hope it comes back next year.
From one celebration to another, Leeds Pride marked its 20th anniversary in spectacular fashion with over 90,000 people celebrating across the city. It’s
work on and seeing months of planning
year’s move to a full weekend format felt like the perfect way to celebrate two decades of Pride in the city, and judging by the crowds, Leeds agreed. It was so good the teamed have announced the twoday event will be back next year.
The streets were packed from start to
good pop performances, drag queens and entertainers combined with an epic parade. It was another reminder of what makes Leeds such a brilliant place to live.
Of course, no Leeds summer is
to book brunch, and The Alchemist

has got just the one. The city’s original cocktail masters have launched a brandnew Bottomless Brunch that’s every bit as theatrical as you’d expect from them. Available every Saturday, guests can enjoy three drinks alongside one brunch dish from a menu that includes favourites like Chicken their signature Full Alchemist Breakfast. The drinks list doesn’t disappoint either - IYKYK. If your brunch isn’t Instagramworthy before you’ve even picked up your fork, are you even doing it properly?
Talking of long-awaited openings,
worth the wait!
The restaurant itself is stunning. Inspired by Bombay’s historic Irani cafés, it’s the perfect balance of vintage charm and elegant design.
The food more than lives up to the surroundings too. The legendary Bacon Naan Roll remains as good as everyone says and the Chicken Ruby delivers! The Okra Fries and Chilli Cheese Toast are delicious too. Safe to say, this place is a must try this summer.
With all that eating and drinking, some form of exercise seemed sensible. Thankfully, David Lloyd came to the rescue with the launch of its new indoor padel and pickleball courts. After introducing outdoor courts last year, the club has doubled down on two of the UK’s fastest-growing sports, giving members even more opportunities to jump on the trend regardless of the weather. For me though, the courts are only part of the appeal at David Lloyd. The hot days have meant I’ve been making full use of the outdoor pool before heading to the spa. It’s been giving the holiday vibes I’m always craving and a great place to work from during the heatwaves.
Finally, a mention has to go to Mint XL. At a time when it feels like nightclub closures dominate the headlines, it’s so refreshing to see investment in Leeds’s nightlife. The team behind the legendary Mint Festival are breathing new energy into the city with Mint XL, transforming the former PRYZM venue on Woodhouse Lane into a 2,000-capacity home for electronic music.
With an impressive line-up of DJs already announced and more events planned throughout the year, it’s exactly
scene needed. The city has always punched above its weight musically, and it’s exciting to see promoters continuing to back that reputation rather than letting it fade.
Leeds isn’t slowing down anytime soon, and neither am I.

More than 90,000 people came together to celebrate 20 years of Leeds Pride

elcome to my new column highlighting all the wonderful things that are happening at Wentworth Woodhouse and across the South Yorkshire region. This summer is building up to be a sizzler, not only in terms of temperatures but also the incredible diversity of things to see and do that we now have available in our region. Over the coming months I shall be exploring the very best of what our region has to offer and sharing the highlights with you.
The team at Wentworth Woodhouse launched the 2026 exhibition ‘showcase’ Echoes of the House: Lives in Light and Motion on 7 July. The exhibition transforms the State Rooms with digital storytelling techniques, revealing unexpected and surprising stories from the house by those who shaped it and those that shape it today. Drawing inspiration from historic storytelling devices such as zoetropes and magic lanterns, the exhibition combines striking physical installations with immersive digital experiences. Visitors encounter emotional narratives of real people brought vividly to life, alongside spectacular moments of visual wonder.
Building on the success of the smallscale exhibition If Walls Could Talk from 2021, Echoes of the House embraces the spirit of Phantasmagoria: a constantly shifting world of optical effects, illusions, and fantastical assemblages, creating an exhibition that surprises, delights and reimagines how heritage stories can be told. It’s all very exciting and I believe, quite groundbreaking in the way we are delivering storytelling. The exhibition runs until the beginning of November.
For those on child-minding duty over the summer holidays don’t forget that the activity cabin at Wentworth is open throughout; sit back and relax in a deckchair and let the little ones be entertained with crafting activities and garden games. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
In July I was fortunate to be invited to the launch of the new exhibition ‘Collecting Rotherham’, a major new temporary exhibition at Clifton Park Museum.
Running until Spring 2027, the exhibition invites visitors to travel through 130 years of collecting, showcasing everything from the museum’s very oldest acquisitions to its most recent additions – including items that have never been displayed before.
Clifton Park Museum has been collecting since 1893 and now cares for over 75,000 objects. The size of the collection means they can’t display everything at once;

exhibition features items from the museum’s diverse collections, including Natural Sciences, Fine and Applied Arts, Archaeology, Social and Industrial History, and the York and Lancaster Regimental collection.
Far from a traditional display, the exhibition highlights the odd and eccentric, provoking ideas about the key role museum collections play in producing knowledge and histories, and how the act of collecting world. To bring these concepts to life, the exhibition features a thought-provoking, immersive experience created by Urban Projections, aka Rebecca Smith.
Set within the beautiful Clifton Park, a visit to the museum over the summer offers a full day out at no cost as admission to Clifton Park Museum and the Collecting Rotherham exhibition is free. What’s not to like?
In next month’s column I shall be happening at other attractions in the region over the summer and particularly for those who with families. Keep hydrated folks!

The Trolleybus Museum in Sandtoft takes you back to a bygone transport era.
Trolleybuses – electric public transit vehicles that draw power from dual overhead wires – were a popular sight in Doncaster and Rotherham until the early 1970s when they were eventually taken out of service.
Anticipating this decline, in 1969 a group of volunteers decided to join together to celebrate this much-loved mode of transport. Through the generosity of the mother of one of them, Mike Dare, a young schoolteacher from Reading, a four-acre site – a former wartime RAF station – was purchased in Sandtoft and so The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft was founded.
“By the end of the 1960s only three operational British trolleybus systems remained,” said Chas Allen, a volunteer at the museum. “Before then, groups of enthusiasts around the country had realised that this mode of transport was fast disappearing and had set about saving examples. Their immediate problem was where to keep these historic vehicles; a secondary aim was to set up a working museum where the public could enjoy the trolleybus’s unique characteristics.”

For most events, tickets are priced

“Every penny you spend at the museum goes to maintaining our collection, our buildings, and developing the site,” added Chas. “We rely on our open days, fundraising, donations and bequests and are always looking for more volunteers.”

Leeds International Festival of Ideas returns to Leeds Playhouse this October with
here’s a particular kind of buzz that only a festival can bring to a city, and this autumn it settles on Leeds Playhouse. From 6 to 10 October, Leeds International Festival of Ideas (LIFI26) takes over the stage with a line-up that reads like the most interesting dinner party you’ll never quite manage to throw yourself.
The headliners alone are worth clearing your diary for. Louis Theroux opens the week on Tuesday, taking us Inside the Louisphere for an evening with Britain’s most quietly disarming interviewer, before Tim Minchin closes things out on Saturday with Creativity Among the Chaos — expect wit, music and mischief in equal measure. Both are already sold out, which tells you everything about the appetite for a proper night of ideas in this city.

That’s the real charm of LIFI26: one swings from laugh-out-loud to genuinely moving, often within the same evening. It’s a chance to think a little harder, feel a little more, and do it all surrounded by a city that loves a good conversation.

In and up and coming area of Leeds city centre, The Whitehall Restaurant and Bar is quietly making a name for itself, writes Richard Abbey.
You don’t need me to tell you that Leeds city centre has changed immeasurably over the last few years, particularly the area around the train station, where work is still ongoing.
If you head up Wellington Street you’ll plazas and pedestrianised areas. But with has been in a rise in the number of bars and restaurants this new, stylish area.
One of these is The Whitehall Restaurant & Bar, an independent venue that opened seven years ago, who now feels like before the pandemic, it then found itself surrounded by building sites (these high hidden by scaffolding for a good number of years. Thankfully, that façade is now fully revealed.
The Whitehall occupies a corner plot on to Man’s Market and the Lazy Lounge with The Soap Factory and Hoist House favourable wraparound outside terrace which catches the sun when it shines.
Inside, it’s a contemporary affair with high ceilings, striking lighting and modern furniture, with a number of booths to add sized bar area if you prefer to call in for a drink but overlooking the food would be a mistake.
The Whitehall describes itself as ‘modern British’ and looking through the great steaks, including sharing cuts, as well as Lindisfarne oysters, tuna tartare and native lobster. To complement this, there’s a good choice of starters, small plates, pizza, pasta, mains and side dishes. It was hard to know where to start.
After being greeted warmly by manager, Chelsea, we were shown to our table before ordering drinks and looking over the abundant choices. There are also daily specials and my wife was quick to choose

The specials board seemed like a good place for me to start and the sauteed squid

Scallops are always a favourite of my wife’s and the Scottish king versions, served with heritage tomatoes, goats curd, a delicate, summery dish that allowed the ingredients to shine.
It didn’t seem fair to visit The Whitehall without trying one of their steaks, which

Another recommended dish was a side

Big Barn Cafe at Manor Farm can satisfy every appetite, from breakfast and brunch to hearty lunches, writes Richard Abbey.
don’t what it is but every time I’ve visited Manor Farm in Oldcotes, I’ve been blessed with glorious sunshine which just seems to bathe the rural venue, which is home to a café, conference centre and lots of little independent shops, in the most beautiful light.
It’s been a few years since I last visited Manor Farm and there’s been some little changes, most notably on the retail front but they’ve also added a reformer pilates studio and a dog beauticians as well as some new outdoor seating and signage to the café.
The farm has a grand history, dating back to 1855 when it was built for Edward Challinor who owned the nearby Hermaston Hall in Oldcotes. Challinor commissioned the build as a place for further guests to stay for hunting seasons.
Later Manor Farm became a true ‘farm’ and has seen the farming of cows, pigs and pheasants. The property was bought by the Priestleys in 2012 and still remains their family home. Restoration has been key to the family vision, to upgrade and give continued life to this historical grade two listed building.
Abi Priestley is often a welcoming face around the site, which has ample free parking and is located just off the Blyth Road, and she popped into see us as we were enjoying our summer lunch in the Big Barn Café.
The café is a grand space and retains much of its original features, including exposed brick walls and roof beams. The mood is softened with antique rugs and furnishings and strings of lights to create a cosy, welcoming venue.
We’d arrived for lunch, which is served from 12pm, and includes a variety of options, from sandwiches and salads to baked potatoes and more substantial dishes. New for 2026 are

sharing platters – you can choose from Ploughman’s, antipasti or cheese – as well as sharing pasta bowls, which can also be served as individual portions. Diners can choose from linguine carbonara, mac and cheese, tomato and basil penne and chicken Alfredo.
Despite the amount of tempting options, it was the weather that (£14.95) or hot beef ciabatta (£14.95) did quite sit with 30-degree heat so we opted for much lighter dishes of chicken skewers (£13.95) and a ham and cheese toastie (£10.95) with a side portion of fries (£4.25).
Both ticked the box for a ‘lighter lunch’ option and delivered on both
was well cooked with a subtle chargrill tzatziki.
My dining companion was equally every bite as well as the very good crispy fries.
We’d both opted for cold drinksSan Pellegrino orange for me and a Diet Coke for her (both £2.50).
The food at the Big Barn Café has that homemade, freshly-prepared feel and this extends to the choice of desserts, which ranges from panackes and peanut stacks to a selection of cakes, scones and brownies.
My dining companion opted for the lemon meringue with ice cream (£6.95), which had a lovely scorched

The ‘new’ incarnation of Dario’s conjures up the same spirit and commitment to authentic food that made the original so popular, writes Ross Heppenstall.

ario’s was a much-loved and popular restaurant in Doncaster in the 1970s and 1980s, standing alongside the A19 between Bentley and Askern and a familiar landmark at the junction with Sutton Road.
In April 2023, after more than 40 years of the restaurant being missed by so many, the name returned with the opening of a new Italian restaurant with the same name in the same location.
Over three years on since its reopening, Dario’s remains iconic, a thriving, modern destination frequented by the great and good of Doncaster and many more who
Just over 30 minutes from Leeds by car, my friend and I travelled on a midsummer’s Friday evening to sample the culinary delights on offer.
It is a lovely venue on Doncaster’s rural outskirts with a countryside vibe and was packed when we arrived for our pre-booked meal at 7.30pm.
Right away it was clear how popular Dario’s has become and its outstanding reputation speaks for itself.
When the restaurant reopened in April 2023, it was the Martin family, proud Doncaster locals with a deep love for the community, who took on the building and set about bringing back one of the town’s most cherished restaurants.
Now it has the same name, the same spirit and the same commitment to authentic Italian food that made Dario’s so
There is a real buzz about the place as we take our seats by the window with a great view of the outside terrace, where plenty of drinkers and diners are enjoying the beautiful sunshine.
Although Dario’s is very much a restaurant, a number of people have popped in for few Friday night drinks to ease their way into the weekend.
It is also a wedding venue and host special events, with a Tina Turner tribute act scheduled for 26 September, priced at £40 per ticket which includes a drink on

arrival, two-course meal and a disco until late.
Rebecca Knowles, Owston Hall’s deputy general manager who hails from County Cork in Ireland, introduces herself and could not be more welcoming.
The waiting-on staff are extremely friendly and attentive and we order a pint of Guinness and a Pinot Grigio before pouring over the menus.
There is fantastic wine list, a wellstocked bar and favourites on tap including Poretti, 1664 and Wainwright.
There is also a great choice of spirits and cocktails and a quick glance at the choice of starters certainly whets the appetite.

classic Italian dishes such as bruschetta, calamari, baked garlic mushrooms, caprese, mozzarrella sticks and fennel spiced meatballs.
The Dario’s Antipasti sharing board, though, looks too good to resist. It comprises a selection of cured meats, cheese, calamari, mozzarella sticks, focaccia, olives and garlic aioli and is excellent value at £23.95 (there is also the option of a sharer for four people at £45.50).
There is also a wide range of tasty salads includes a Caprese grande, Caesar, beef tagliata and salmon as well as risotto
including a seafood or garden pea variation. You really are spoilt for choice at Dario’s, especially when it comes to pasta dishes.
I go for the Dario’s speciality lasagne, which is Dario’s signature beef lasagne with ragu, ricotta, balsamic and parmesan. The portion sizes are very generous and to say it was the best lasagne I have ever tasted would be no exaggeration.
My friend chose the 8oz ribeye steak with fries, Portobello mushroom and cherry tomatoes, which was similarly cooked to perfection.
Yet there is so much more on the menu to explore.
Other pasta dishes which come highly recommended include caponata rigatoni; roasted pepper, courgette, red onion, olives and pomodoro sauce.
ravioli, carbonara, king Prawn Linguine, Beef Ragu, Meatball Linguine in addition to a huge range of Pizzas of course.
Prices for mains are generally around the £15 mark while prices naturally increase for steak.
Tuscan chicken with new potatoes, green beans, garlic mushroom, spinach, parmesan and cream sauce at £16.95.
There is also seabass, salmon, sirloin steak, ribeye steak and a choice of Dario’s homemade burgers along with a variety of side dishes including rosemary roasted baby potatoes, fries and garden peas and pancetta.
It was so tempting to order a dessert, but we were simply stuffed after an amazing starter and main course.
But, for the record, the choice is huge with prices ranging from £4.95 to £7.50.
There is a signature tiramisu or affogato (two scoops of vanilla ice-cream, dark chocolate dome, espresso), mini Nutella doughnuts and chocolate fondue (with chantilly cream and strawberries).
Other offerings include triple chocolate brownie with pistachio ice-cream, bourbon sticky toffee pudding and homemade custard, lemon and panna cotta (with raspberry coulis and shortbread biscuit) and a selection of ice cream and sorbet served
I am already looking forward to my next visit to Dario’s, which looks set to go from strength to strength. And how we should all raise a glass to that.
