The flat is back! THE FLAT SEASON IS UNDER STARTER’S ORDERS THIS SPRING. righter nights and warmer days can mean only one thing – the flat season is under starter’s orders at Doncaster Racecourse. As the green shoots of spring are popping through the ground, racing enthusiasts from across the country are getting ready to don their racewear for the official opening of the UK flat turf season. The Lincoln, which showcases world class racing in Doncaster, has a new sponsor for 2018. Online casino 32Red have partnered with Doncaster Racecourse to present the 32Red Lincoln. First past the post last year in the Heritage Handicap was Bravery, who made a fairytale start for North Yorkshire handler David O’Meara thanks to an inspired performance from jockey Danny Tudhope. The race, which take place on 24 March,
will get the flat season underway with eight months of racing and entertainment activities ahead. And after a day filled with racing and socialising, an evening of entertainment from The Fillers, the world’s greatest Killer’s tribute band, will see visitors singing along to classics including Mr Brightside, Run for Cover and Runaways. The gates open at 12noon and the racecourse will formally start the flat season at 13.50pm, with seven races throughout the afternoon. Abby Chandler, head of marketing from Doncaster Racecourse, said: “The 32Red Lincoln is a really exciting race for us as it gets the season underway in style. We are looking forward to welcoming racegoers back to Doncaster Racecourse for this event and we know that it will be a great day out.
“The flat season includes the popular William Hill St Leger Festival and this year’s Ladies Day will be followed by a performance from one of the UK’s best-loved pop stars, radio broadcaster, actor and DJ, Martin Kemp. “Early bird tickets for Ladies Day go on sale on 5 March until 31 May and with this year’s entertainment announced we suggest that you grab them while you can. We can’t wait to see Martin Kemp perform in Doncaster and we know that our Ladies Day crowd will give him a very warm welcome.” Further information on the races and entertainment can be found at www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk Doncaster Racecourse Leger Way, Doncaster, DN2 6BB Tel: 01302 304200 www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk

Sheer style and luxury – on tap! ick and Rachel McKee from Holmesfield had decided their bungalow’s bathroom was looking dated, and after contacting a few bathroom companies, they were left feeling deflated at only being offered replacement units without any design or flair. However, visiting Bubble & Soak at their Dronfield showroom opened their eyes to what could be achieved by totally redesigning their bathroom, even creating more space. “Natalie, the showroom manager, was very creative with her designs, showing us how we would lose our cramped, raised shower unit and replace it with a walk-in wet room shower.” says Rachel. This created a larger shower area, whilst creating more floor space. “We loved all the design ideas and the bathroom looks much bigger.” When Bubble & Soak removed Nick and Rachel’s old bathroom suite, they discovered the previous shower unit had been leaking for quite some time. Although this was a complication they could have done without, Bubble & Soak resolved all the issues by firstly drying out the affected area, then adding a damp proof membrane to ensure no future complications. Using a selection of Villeroy & Boch rimless toilet, Hansgrohe shower, mixer and spout, Meryln shower screen and a luxury freestanding bath, this really is a Designer bathroom. What’s more, the recessed, made-to-measure mirror was created by building out a false wall, which also created a luxury storage shelf. All beautifully finished with Vogue radiator and classic, contemporary floor tiles, it certainly gives the ‘wow factor’, and the McKees are thrilled with their fabulous new wet room bathroom.
Since opening their Award-Winning Showroom back in March 2017, Bubble and Soak and have definitely made a name for themselves. Bubble & Soak provide a professional, personal service, helping customers create their dream bathroom or wetroom. They offer a Free design consultation including survey, quotation and 3D renders. Green, green grass NOW IS THE TIME TO START GETTING YOUR LAWN IN SHAPE FOR SUMMER. iving your house a spring clean is a popular activity this time of year and your garden deserves the same attention if you want it to look its best. When we do venture back outside, though, we are often faced with overgrown shrubbery and under-loved lawns, and bringing your garden back to life can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. As the weather gets milder, now is the perfect time to give your lawn some much needed TLC and keep it healthy and weed free in the months ahead. The milder winter means your lawn has probably continued growing all year and could have done with attention a little earlier than usual. First things first – it pays to take care of any bare patches that may have appeared. The best way to deal with them is to carefully rake the patch and then sow some grass seeds mixed with a little top-soil. It’s important not to let the seeds dry out, so remember to keep them well watered and you should see some sprouts appearing within a few days. Grass needs as much direct sunlight as possible to stay healthy and green, so raking up
any dead leaves and twigs is another important job and can be a great way to get the kids involved and develop their ‘green thumbs’. As a rule of thumb, the first dry and sunny day in March is the ideal time to give your lawn its first cut of the year. Cutting the grass too short, too soon, can attract unwanted weeds and moss, so to avoid that happening, make sure you use the highest blade setting on your lawnmower. Special fertilisers are available to use at this time of year to give grass the essential nutrients it needs to grow strong and give it a vibrant colour; these seasonal treatments have been specially developed to work in cooler temperatures. Spring weather conditions tend to result in a flourish of young weeds, and selecting a treatment that includes a herbicide can help to control brood-leaved weeds such as daisies, clovers, dandelions and buttercups. Once you’ve carried out basic maintenance on your lawn, it pays to plan ahead to prevent all your hard work in the spring going to waste, and to guarantee a beautiful lawn you can enjoy all summer long. Hotter weather and dry spells over the
summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up, but there are some really effective treatments out there that can help keep grass greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn care specialist GreenThumb. The surfactant attaches itself to the molecules in the soil to conserve any moisture, helping to reduce the amount of watering needed. Where soil type is mainly clay, which is common in the Sheffield region, the amount of water needed to keep grass green can be reduced by up to 80 per cent, so you can spend less time watering and more time enjoying your lawn. Give yourself another reason to be cheerful this spring and take care of your lawn now to enjoy the benefits of a luscious, green lawn year round. Call GreenThumb Sheffield on: 0114 276 0101 for a free lawn analysis or email: email@example.com GreenThumb Tel: 0114 276 0101 Email: firstname.lastname@example.org www.greenthumb.co.uk

Tidy up the exterior
Create a fantastic first impression for the impending parties by sprucing up the outside of your house. Give your doors a clean and a lick of paint, change outdoor lights, re-paint wooden fences and add some new plant pots, hanging baskets or a welcome mat to the entrance of your home. Don’t forget to clean your gutters, as rain and wind will have washed fallen leaves into them. If clogged drainpipes and gutters are neglected, it can lead to flooding so make sure to give them a thorough clear-out when the dryer weather arrives.
Instead of just wiping down the inside of your windows, make sure you take to the outdoors during the spring cleaning season to remove spots and smudges you don't usually have the time to tackle. If you can, wash them on a cloudy day to ensure the sun doesn’t dry the cleaner before you’re done wiping meaning you won’t be left with streaks.
Deep clean appliances Your oven and microwave have probably seen a lot of use especially over the festive period - so now is a good time to give both a scrub. It’s also important to give your fridge a deep clean, so it’s ready for all the fresh spring vegetables that will be filling it up. Don’t forget to clean the inside and out - take out all the interior and wash it with warm soapy water, and if possible pull the fridge out so you can sweep behind it.
Spruce up for spring THE WEATHER IS LOOKING UP AND IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR HOUSE BACK IN SHAPE, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. fter a long, chilly winter, it’s hard to believe that spring is just around the corner. The mornings are brighter and we’re starting to think about taking off our warm layers. But, with warmer weather on the horizon comes the realisation that we may have neglected our homes during the colder months, so the time has come to spring into
action. Although no-one looks forward to the deep-clean, when you see the accumulation of dust in forgotten places you know it’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues. With a little elbow grease and a lot of love, your house can have that fresh spring look again, simply follow these simple steps for a happy, brighter home.
Garden Spring is all about adding a splash of colour back into our lives, and what better way to do this than by brightening up the garden with an array of flowers. Now is the time to start planting so that your garden will be bursting with colour come springtime. If you really want to re-invent your garden, add some new furniture along with lights and accessories, and don't forget to pressure wash your decking or patio. Treat yourself to a fire-pit or barbeque to prepare for the summer party season.

After months of hiding yourselves indoors, your house is probably in need of a serious clear out. It’s time to be brutal with your belongings - find a place for it or throw it away. Take the time to have a clean of all your drawers and pack away your winter clothes for another year to give you some more wardrobe space. You could even make some extra money by selling unwanted items online, host a car boot sale or donate to your local charity shop.
Tidy up the exterior Create a fantastic first impression for the impending parties by sprucing up the outside of your house. Give your doors a clean and a lick of paint, change outdoor lights, re-paint wooden fences and add some new plant pots, hanging baskets or a welcome mat to the entrance of your home. Don’t forget to clean your gutters, as rain and wind will have washed fallen leaves into them. If clogged drainpipes and gutters are neglected, it can lead to flooding so make sure to give them a thorough clear-out.
Check the roof With the heavy rain, winds and snow storms up and down the country, your roof will have suffered a beating this winter, so it’s essential to check no damage has been done. This can be done yourself, or if the thought of climbing on the roof leaves you feeling queasy, you can hire a professional roofer.

Update furnishings If you don’t fancy painting your home, then give it a seasonal makeover by replacing throws and thick curtains with light furnishings, cushions and colourful accessories. Bring in pastels, vibrant colours or some rose gold with the help of picture frames, plant pots, candles and rugs to give your home that spring feel. As well, it’s important to wash your pillows, duvets and curtains and get someone to help flip your mattress.
Clean carpets Fabrics that have absorbed a winter’s worth of dirt will need deep cleaning to get them ready for another busy year of guests. Shampoo them or hire a carpet cleaner to get them in tip top shape. And don't forget to move your furniture while it is drying, which can take about a day but you can open the windows to help speed up the process. If you aren’t up to doing it yourself, simple hire a professional carpet cleaner to get the job done.
DUST THE FORGOTTEN PLACES Give your house some well-needed TLC by firing up the vacuum and getting rid of the dust. Take the time to take light fittings down, clear off the bookshelf, DVD cabinet, clear under the bed and sweep away all the hidden cobwebs. Dust and polish the smaller things including picture frames and desk trinkets to give them a new lease of life. Don’t forget to tackle the bathroom, by getting rid of any limescale that has built up. White vinegar can help do this, along with removing stains from the toilet, sink and shower - simply spray it on and let it get to work.

Year of the dog NICK GAVE UP ALCOHOL FOR A WHOLE YEAR TO RAISE MONEY FOR A CHARITY WHICH PROVIDES THE DISABLED WITH SUPPORT DOGS. BY RACHEL MARTIN. strong-willed Sheffield man has raised an incredible £1,500 for charity Support Dogs by giving up alcohol for a year. Dog-lover Nick White, aged 43, from High Storrs, had hoped to raise £500 but by the end of his One Year No Beer challenge had smashed his target. Not a heavy drinker, but someone who’d been known to have a few at Christmas and birthdays, Nick said that thinking of his charity of choice during the long, dry 12-month spell gave him plenty of motivation. “I started the target small as I wasn’t a big drinker - gone are the days when I used to go out and drink heavily - so I was absolutely amazed to smash my target,” he said. Nick, a bat ecologist, raises money for charity every couple of years and this time wanted to do something a bit different. He was inspired to raise money for Support Dogs after hearing one of their disability assistance dog clients speak about her
‘Finding out how these animals can be trained and use their skills was fantastic.’ experiences and the difference her dog made to her life. Support Dogs, whose head office is in Brightside, provides and trains assistance dogs for children with autism and adults with epilepsy and physical disability, enabling them to lead more independent lives. “I have a black Labrador, Sam, and love him to bits. In his own way he supported me when I was going through a mild depression, and just having him around and having to walk him, a dog really lifts your mood I think. Dogs are so loving, and don’t ask for anything back. “I heard Support Dogs’ client Amanda Davidson speak, met and chatted to her and she was inspirational. Then I found out about Support Dogs being based in Sheffield but helping people
all around the country. Finding out how these animals can be trained and use their skills was fantastic.” Nick decided to start his booze-free year just before Christmas last year. “I wanted to get the hardest bit out of the way first,” he confessed. His usual tipples of real ale, malt whisky and ‘the odd G&T on a summer’s evening’ went out of the window in favour first of Coke, then a succession of non-alcoholic beers. There were a few testing moments throughout the year – Nick’s wife’s 40th birthday for example, and his annual visit to the Test Match at Headingley - always a boozy affair - and having a nice cold beer at the end of a hot sunny day. But being the designated driver for 12 months had its advantages. “It’s changed my attitude to drinking – I never want to get to the point when I wake up in the morning feeling rough. It’s good to wake up and feel fine. I go running and enjoyed not losing out because of drinking the night before.” When the time came to start drinking again drew near, Nick says the craving got greater and greater but once the day came and he allowed himself a pint he found he wasn’t actually that bothered. “To celebrate I arranged to go out with a few friends, but I just had a couple of pints and stuck to that,” said Nick. “And my wife Rachel and I went to the Dales for a few days and we could go for walks and end up in the pub; it was nice to go in and have a pint. And I enjoyed Christmas this year! I’m just very grateful to everyone who donated and supported me during my 12 dry months.” Danny Anderson, fundraising manager for Support Dogs added: “We’re incredibly grateful to Nick for his fantastic fundraising efforts, and for the imaginative way that he chose to support us. “We rely entirely on the generosity of people like him to help fund dog our training programmes, which can truly transform the lives of many people with serious medical condition and disabilities.” To find out more and to donate to Support Dogs, visit www.supportdogs.org.uk.

OUR WINNER Tesco Finest Salted Caramel Egg 310g, £9 A smooth Belgian milk chocolate base with creamy milk and white chocolate. Both are sweetened with crunchy caramel pieces and enhanced by a hint of sea salt... With a description like that, we were salivating before we’d even opened the box. The egg is split into two halves, so you can enjoy the best of both. As we split this thick and decadent egg in half, a few members of the panel even let out some “oohs” and “aahs”. The salt beautifully balances out the sweet caramel and chocolate, it’s an impressive size, well-presented and is egg-cellent value for money. The fact that we couldn’t help going back for seconds, was also a strong indicator that this was the best of the bunch.
Top of the chocs 2018 OUR EGGS-PERT PANEL SHARE THEIR TOP TREATS FOR EASTER. TUCK IN...
ith such a wide range of Easter chocolates out there, and a number of family members with their own personal preferences to buy for, it’s enough to give you an eggs-istential crisis. To help with this predicament, our very
own tasting panel were on hand to put some of the most delicious Easter products from some of the best chocolatiers around to the test. Read on to find out which we deemed the most egg-cellent and which one we crowned the top of the chocs.
BEST ALL-ROUNDER Betty’s Trio of Spring Flower Eggs 250g, £27.50 Not sure whether your loved-one likes milk, dark or white chocolate? This trio ticks all the boxes. The dark chocolate egg is rich with delicious depth of flavour, the white (or should we say silver?) chocolate was creamy and obviously of a high quality, while the milk chocolate was a good balance of the two. Like most products in Betty’s Easter range, they were beautifully hand-crafted and decorated with flower frosting. 42 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk
BEST BOOZY CHOCOLATE Prestat Pink Popping Prosecco Easter Egg 170g, £17.50 Confectionary with a kick. Enveloped within this prosecco-flavoured chocolate egg are fizzing popping candy and strong prosecco-filled truffles. What’s more, it has the “By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen” seal of approval. And if it’s good enough for Liz, it’s good enough for us.
BEST FOR ALLERGIES Booja-Booja Around Midnight Espresso Easter Egg 35g, £9.99 Not only were we impressed by the gorgeously painted, egg-shaped wooden box this was presented in, we also couldn’t believe how deliciously silky these truffles were – especially considering they are organic and dairy, gluten and soya free. Coffee lovers will also enjoy the authentic flavour.
BEST FOR KIDS Thorntons White Chocolate Bunny 200g, £6 Thorntons is a must if you’ve got kids to buy for this Easter and this white chocolate bunny is a great choice. As well as being a decent size with a detailed kid-friendly design, you’re sure to get good quality chocolate from a high street favourite.
BEST FOR DARK CHOCOLATE LOVERS Chococo Luxury Madagascar MegaDark Egg 175g, £18 This one was certainly the coolest-looking of the bunch, with its geometric pattern and three layers of dark chocolate. If you know a true dark chocolate connoisseur, this bitter 85 per cent MegaDark egg is just the thing. Vegans and the ethically-minded can also rejoice, as the company strive to carefully source all their ingredients.
BEST FOR GROWN-UP KIDS Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Swiss Chocolate Bunny 440g, £6 A grown-up take on a classic kid’s choice, this Easter treat from Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference range is a realistic twist on the usual cartoon-esque hollow bunny. This was such a work of art, it was a shame to behead it. But we were soon rewarded with smooth Swiss milk chocolate, which was easy to break up as it bent rather than snapped, therefore avoiding pesky crumbs – well, it would be a shame to waste any. Plain sailing in Panama CARMEL STEWART RECENTLY ACHIEVED A LONG-HELD AMBITION TO TRANSIT THE PANAMA CANAL. HERE ARE SOME EXTRACTS FROM HER BLOG WHILE ON BOARD THE REGENT SEVEN SEAS NAVIGATOR.
Vive la difference The big difference between the independent traveller and the experienced cruiser is that the former hold on tight to their possessions, paperwork and passports, come what may. Experienced cruisers are altogether gentler, more trusting souls. The boss says hand over your passport at the beginning of the cruise and they do – not just for a few hours or even a few days but for the full duration of the excursion which, for some, could be as much as four months. For me, it has to do with the potential disasters every serial catastrophiser (such as myself) has at the forefront of their minds – the ‘what if ’ list of imagined problems. These will include an unforeseen event which will require paying a large bill, arrest for mistaken identity, detention for an unintentional misdemeanour (or for failure to pay that aforementioned large bill) and, on this trip, the need to buy an airline ticket to the next port due to one of the possible catastrophes actually becoming a reality. The point is, every solution includes the production of a passport which is not possible when my passport is locked on board inside the captain’s safe and I am locked inside the local jail. So, when the cruiser and the independent traveller meet, a compromise is called for. Suggestions on a post card, please.
Plain sailing After the initial clash of cultures, we have settled into our first cruise very well. By we I mean my Australian-based sister, Kathy, with whom I have been travelling for the past umpteen years. When booking, we chose our cabin with care opting for a mid-ship, twin berth, with balcony. Taking the hit for an all-inclusive deal has taken much of the hassle out of the whole process. We can eat where and when we like; we can drink where and when we like; and we can take part in lectures, activities and shore excursions on the same bases. So, when you are researching your cruise, have a calculator close by. All-inclusive has an expensive initial outlay but, once you have delved into your savings account searched every pocket and piggybank to gather together the 44 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk
required cash, that’s it. By contrast, a pay-as-you-go cruise will have you constantly checking to make sure you haven’t exceeded your allocated budget. But inevitably, there are things that will cost extra. For example, in my personalised Passages newsletter – thoughtfully delivered to every cabin every evening – I note that I can have an ‘Age Defying Pedicure’ for ‘Just $115’. The problem is that, while my feet may well acquire a more youthful appearance, the rest of me is ageing with alarming alacrity. The only real surprise is how rocky the journey has been. I have always been certain that a large vessel will be pretty stable, but the weather is such that everyone is rolling along the corridors – tail-end of the hurricane season will do that.
A cruise ship negotiating the Gatun Locks on the Panama Canal at Colon
Rolling Along Things have calmed down considerably since those first few nights and we have made very rapid progress, almost imperceptibly. We visited the Cayman Islands, which were very pretty and very English – roundabouts, driving on the left etc. Had hoped to ‘interact’ with turtles and stingrays but cancelled due to the bad weather so visited the botanical park instead. A few days later we visited Tayrona Park in Colombia where the guide was useless and the trip pointless. He knew nothing about the flora and fauna of the area. In addition, the loos were awful, no water either to flush or wash hands – bit yuk, frankly. But I enjoyed Cartagena, a little further up the Colombian coast, the following day, mainly because I chose the soft option – the hop-on, hop off tour during which I hopped on at the beginning and hopped off at the end. Kathy did similarly but added a city stroll to her itinerary and took some great pics showing the contrast between the old and the new. The day after was the day I had been waiting for – the transit of the Panama Canal – and we did so in style.
A dream come true We had been given an excellent talk the day before by the on-board Smithsonian Lecturer, Terry Bishop, so were well primed as to the history and the lay-out of the locks and the lake. We arrived early in the morning and were provided with an intermittent commentary which was not quite up to the Bishop’s standard but certainly added to the occasion. The captain directed operations from a mobile workstation on a cantilevered balcony so that he had an uninterrupted view of the canal and we had an uninterrupted view of him. We could see what was happening from every angle all day – it was really terrific. And, if anyone felt the need of a lie down during the long day, they still had a ringside seat, as it were, via the bridge dash cam relay to all cabins 24/7 throughout the entire cruise. For those who like the facts and figures, the Panama Canal is 48 miles long and connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, providing a conduit for ships and boats of all shapes and sizes. It comprises three sets of locks at either end of the Gatun Lake. The work was
originally begun by the French in 1881 but they did not have the required engineering expertise. The Americans took over the project in 1904 and the Canal finally opened in the summer of 1914. Its construction cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives. Small towing trains, known as mules, guided us through the locks. They run on tracks alongside, ensuring we don’t veer off course. Additional guide ropes are used to help the process. Alongside the original canal, there now runs a wider transit corridor which can accommodate larger commercial shipping. We were given maps of the canal and, later that evening, received personalised certificates as a memento but we didn’t really need a reminder. It was a brilliant day which really lived up to expectations with not even a minor hiccup let alone a catastrophe.

You’ve goat to be kidding me! Four baby goats have been born at the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre in North Anston, near Sheffield. Beauty, the first goat to go into labour on 22 January, had a complicated birth, and she nor her first kid suvived. But staff at Portland Vets saved a second kid’s life by performing an emergency caesarean section. A pygmy goat, he was named Beau in honour of his mother and was cared for around the clock in the Small Animal House until he was strong enough to join the rest of the goats in the Farm Barn. Just a few days later, two more baby pygmy goats, Sprinkles and Gaston, arrived. Sprinkles joined Beau in the Small Animal House as she needed monitoring; Beau and Sprinkles have since built a strong bond and where Beau goes, Sprinkles is right behind him. On 3 February, a fourth baby pygmy/Saanen goat was born and named Floss. Visitors can help feed the baby goats every day in the Farm Barn, until they’re all grown up – see the encounters timetable on arrival for times. The Tropical Butterfly House is open daily, located just five minutes from the M1, Junction 31, with free parking. Visit www.butterflyhouse.co.uk to plan your visit.

Keep calm and carry on as wartime spirit comes to Westbourne School It was a case of keep calm and carry on as Year Four pupils at Sheffield’s Westbourne School stepped back in time to discover a world of wartime hardship. Dressed in period costume, children from the Broomhill independent school found out what it was like for families of the 1940s to go through evacuation, experience an air raid warning and live with food rationing. And on a lighter note, they also found time to learn classic wartime morale boosting song Run, Rabbit Run.
Birkdale students rise to cyber security challenge Cyber security is in the news on a regular basis and members of Birkdale School’s Code Club, run by the Computing department, have been participating in the recent cyber security challenge Capture the Flag. This is run by students from Sheffield Hallam University. It involves challenges testing cryptography, secure coding and on-line security. Merlin Hancock (Year 8) was presented with a medal for best overall score. This was an outstanding achievement as the challenge is actually aimed at much older students. Alex Pilakoutas (Year 10) also received a prize and certificate.
