Vulcan Drifter bike makes its stage debut All Shook Up is a unique take on the rock n roll era, with actors Josh Holliday and Adam Walker taking on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and some of Elvis’ biggest hits as they transport you back to 1950s Midwest America. Motorcycle enthusiast Steve Badger, of SD Motorcycles in Chesterfield, is responsible for loaning the bike to the Woodseats Theatre Company. The Vulcan Drifter is based on the Indian Chief Motorcycle, famously owned by Hollywood legends James Dean and Clark Gable. Peter King is the man the St Luke’s Hospice Woodseats shop turn to when they receive donations of watches and clocks which don’t work. Rather than letting time slip through his fingers, he has repaired more than 500 watches - and quite a few clocks as well - and put them back in working order ready for sale. Peter’s wife was cared for by St Luke’s before she died in 2013 – and not long after he became a volunteer, utilising the skills he had developed in a lifetime working in precision engineering.

Crawshaw’s comes to Crystal Peaks Crawshaw’s, the UK’s leading fresh meat supplier is coming to Crystal Peaks.The company, which has stores across the Midlands and the North of England, is opening one of its popular fresh meat factory shops at the award winning Sheffield shopping mall on 1 June. The Crystal Peaks launch is part of a rapid expansion programme that aims to see Crawshaw’s meet a target of 200 stores nationwide. Crawshaw’s was launched in Yorkshire in 1954 and over the following 60 years it has grown to become the UK’s leading fresh meat retailer. The new store in one of the centre’s exterior units will be opening next to McDonald’s and opposite Sainsbury’s.

There it was, glistening in the afternoon sun, tempting us after a stint in the sauna and steam room at Fishmore Hall’s new SPAshell facility. You go first, no you, no, I insist… after much to-ing and froing and umming and aahing – and chivalry on

my behalf it has to be noted – my wife and I decided to jump in the Scandi-style cedar wellness pool instead. The ice bucket would have to wait. In the end it was a good choice; I didn’t really need waking up after an extremely indulgent and relaxing back, neck and shoulder massage in one of the spa’s four treatment rooms, I was quite happy to be in full chill out mode. I’m sure my wife did too, after her ELEMIS facial and scalp massage. And what a view as well; it’s not often you can plonk yourself in a hot tub outside with the sun shining and such views afforded to us as the Shropshire countryside and Clee Hills. Even the cows
in the field opposite look totally relaxed – maybe the new spa is rubbing off on them too. It’s a stunning addition to the privatelyowned Ludlow hotel, which has recently been voted the Best Hotel in the Heart of England by Best Loved Hotels. The contemporary, almost cuboid design – which was delivered on the back of a truck and put together like giant Lego bricks – is in stark contrast to the Georgian main building. But, with its larch wood exterior and full-length windows, it blends perfectly into its surroundings. Inside it’s compact and well thought out with a comfortable lounge overlooking the gardens, luxury changing rooms as well as those previously-mentioned treatment rooms, sauna and steam room. We didn’t want to leave.

Inside the 15-room hotel, the bedrooms are spacious and well-designed with luxury bathrooms to match – ours had a huge bath as well as a walk-in shower, the perfect place to unwind and put on your finery before experiencing Fishmore Hall’s acclaimed 3 AA Rosette restaurant, Forelles. Head chef Andrew Birch has built up quite the following from far and wide and prides himself on choosing the majority of ingredients from within a 30-mile radius of the hotel. His show-stopping six and ninecourse tasting menus are perfect for a celebration, or just to indulge your foodie cravings if you feel like it. And indulge you must, as this was food of the highest order. We opted for the six-course version and were blown away. From the pigs head croquette canapés served at our table in the orangery to the petit fours taken in the lounge, we couldn’t fault a thing. Stand-out dishes included scallop served with ras el hanout, cauliflower, apple and coriander; venison served with cavolo nero, artichoke, chestnuts and chanterelles and a chocolate delice with salted caramel and almond ice cream. Service throughout was immaculate. After a good night’s sleep in the comfiest of beds, a hearty breakfast was just what you needed before taking a ten-minute drive into the centre of Ludlow to wander around the many independent shops, delis and antique centres. There’s also the famed castle and river should you wish to explore further. Of course you may find it too difficult to leave such lush surroundings as those at Fishmore Hall, but if you need sparking into life, you could always take the ice bucket challenge.

FLOWERS, TREES AND SHRUBS OF THE MONTH 1 Hydrangea Petiolaris 'Silver Lining' is a new climbing cultivar. It is very similar in most respects to the species, but instead of the normally deep green leaves, the foliage of this one has a very pretty variegation. Tolerant of some shade, and with a little support it is ideal for lighting up a dark wall or corner, and the flowers when they appear in midsummer will put on a wonderful display. 2 Hydrangea macrophylla are popular garden shrubs with delicate heads of flowers in shades of pink, white or blue. 3 Plant beautiful Royalty Hydrangeas now for an eye-

PONDS 1 Once new plantings have established, you can start to carefully introduce new fish. Start stocking and feeding when the water is warm. 2 Don’t leave fish sitting in plastic bags full of water get them in to the pond as soon as possible so that they have a sufficient supply of oxygen. However it pays to float the bags in the pond for ten minutes, to allow the water temperatures to equalise. 3 Continue to remove unwanted weed. 4 Make sure pumps are working adequately – if not, clean or buy a new one.
JOBS TO DO DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS 1 Plant out summer bedding and seed-raised plants, if not already done so. Make sure they are well watered and keep moist during dry weather. 2 Liquid feed containerised plants every two to four weeks. Wards stock a range of easy/ready to use plant food and dilution attachments, including Miracle-Gro®. 3 Be water-wise, especially in drought-affected areas. Used correctly and with water-wise gardening, a water butt will provide all the water you need to keep your garden alive throughout the long hot summer months. Always use a lid on water butts for safety reasons. 4 Wards stock a range of micro irrigation systems, designed to precisely release water to the roots of plants. Because the drip emitters release water slowly, you have greater control of the amount of water being delivered, eliminating water waste. These are ideal for borders and flower beds, vegetable patches, greenhouses, hanging baskets and plants in containers. If you need advice on setting up your micro irrigation system, the friendly and experienced staff are on hand to help. 5 Don’t forget to protect against slug damage. Wards stock a wide range of environmentally friendly slug control/prevention products. 6 Sweet peas need training and tying in to their supports to encourage them to climb. 7 Feed tomatoes, peppers, melons and cucumbers as soon as flowers have turned into fruit. Wards stock Levington® Tomorite® liquid plant food for tomatoes - also ideal for all other fruiting vegetables. For pot plants, ask in store for advice on specific flowering food for flowering and growing seasons.

If you’ve ever visited the water parks in Majorca, Portugal or Florida this scene may be familiar to you. However, now you don’t have to wait until your next foreign holiday to experience those thrills, as the largest aqua park in the UK is right on Sheffield’s doorstep. The 750-acre Rother Valley Country Park has four artificial lakes, and as well as a full size cable ski and wake park they’ve brought more exciting ways for people to wipe out with the aqua park. Complete with huge inflatable slides, a 27ft trampoline, climbing walls, runways and a blast bag; it’s the ultimate outdoor water experience.

Pulling into the car park on a sunny Saturday morning, my partner and I could just see the top of one of the inflatable slides and couldn’t wait to have a go. It was a quick and easy process getting checked in. Once we read the safety card and received the wrist bands, we struggled into our wetsuits and were ready to pick up the life jackets and listen to a safety briefing. This included inflatable safety, getting the lifeguard’s attention and even jokes about crocodiles eating all the sharks, causing a few chuckles from the adults and some panic stricken faces from the children. Then, after a quick walk to the water’s edge we were let loose to try our hand at the adrenaline-fuelled aqua park. After a few seconds deliberating how cold the water would be, I eventually bit the bullet and jumped in. I was thankful for the full
length wetsuit to give me that extra bit of heat as I made the short swim out to the inflatables. Once we pulled ourselves up onto the course and got our balance - which took a few minutes - we started to tackle the giant inflatables. As the course is a simple rectangular layout, it’s easy to navigate your way around. We started at one of the climbing frames, deciding to race against one other by one clambering over and the other under, needless to say going over was considerably quicker. Then we were back onto the runways and heading towards the first of four slides. After a few attempts on the runways, I discovered that instead of delicately walking across, it was easier to run across and saved me a few falls back into the lake. The slides were my favourite section of the

course. After a trying incline on the aweinspiring ladder, you’re rewarded with a thrilling free fall straight into the lake. After a quick swim, we pulled ourselves up onto the next section - which meant it was time to tackle the balancing beam and Jungle Joe. My partner made it look easy by getting across with ease, however, my balancing isn’t great so, needless to say, I didn’t even make it halfway across the beam without falling off. The Jungle Joe is an incredible, towering inflatable which reminded me of the spider web structure you come across at parks. After a tiring but exciting climb up, it was time to plunge back into
the water off the slighter smaller – but still exhilarating slide. And for those daring enough, you can finish the experience of the Jungle Joe on the blast bag which launches you skyward. the 27ft trampoline. I’m a big fan of trampolines and the experience was only improved by it being over a body of water. The activities aren’t just limited to the rectangle course, as just off to the side there are some more inflatables to try including the Rock It and the Rock and Slide. Overall it was a fantastic 50 minutes and despite being exhausted by the end, it was worth feeling achy the next day. If you’re looking for something exciting to do this summer, then I would recommend heading down to the Aqua Park for the ultimate inflatable experience.
