Crystal Peaks shoppers learn how to Drink Wise, Age Well
FUNDRAISERS COMPLETE EPIC BED PUSH TO SUPPORT MACMILLAN APPEAL Eighteen fundraisers pushed a hospital bed 12 miles from a Dronfield pub to Chesterfield Royal Hospital to raise funds for the NGS Macmillan Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. It was the second time the team haven taken on the challenge after the huge success of the event last year, which raised over £9,000. It was organised by Jolly Farmer pub landlord Ashley Tipper, who said: “It was probably the toughest thing I’ve ever done, those beds weigh a lot more than you’d think and pushing it up Hady Hill was a huge challenge. But equally it was just a memory that all of us involved treasured so we thought – let’s give it another go!” The bed started at the Jolly Farmer pub and headed into Chesterfield town centre and onto Calow Lane for the uphill trek to the hospital. The funds raised went to the Macmillan Appeal to help build The Chesterfield Royal Macmillan Centre, which will offer over 21 chemotherapy chairs, two treatment beds and three treatment rooms to North Derbyshire residents. Wild owl rehabilitated and at the Tropical Butterfly House The Tropical Butterfly House has had an unusual guest recently – an owl was brought in by visitor Paul Tredgett. He found the owl in the middle of Marsh Lane at Eckington in Sheffield. The owl was brought to the wildlife centre in North Anston, which funded the medical bills at the veterinary clinic to treat his infected eye, and then looked after him until he was ready to be released back into the wild four days later. He was released on 26 May by Tropical Butterfly House staff and Mr Tredgett near a barn close to where the owl was originally found. Abigail Carter, animal team leader, said: “It’s moments like this that remind me that I have the best job in the world and everybody at the Tropical Butterfly House would like to thank Mr Tredgett for rescuing the little owl when many people would have carried on driving.”

Almost 2,000 people sought advice on alcohol and better health as Drink Wise, Age Well brought its services to Crystal Peaks. The project helps people make healthier choices about alcohol. The team spent six weeks at the award-winning Sheffield shopping centre with a special pop-up shop. During that time shoppers were offered the opportunity to try out interactive activities aimed at highlighting some of the particular harms that can be caused by alcohol in older people, as well as the benefits of making some changes to drinking patterns. The team also shared information and tips for making healthier choices and offered on-going support if needed. Drink Wise, Age Well has been running across Sheffield over the last two years and promotes healthier ageing, keeping active, meeting new friends and learning new skills. Joining Drink Wise, Age Well throughout the six weeks were Sheffield Carers, the Alzheimer’s Society, Woodhouse and District Community Forum, Shelter, Neighbourhood Watch, Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care, Healthwatch Sheffield, Addaction, Right Turn, Safer Road Partnerships and Sheffield Alcohol Support Service. Monte Carlo or Bust for old banger fans Paul and Judy It was Monte Carlo or Bust for keen motorist and St Luke’s Hospice supporter Paul Howard as he took to the road on a fundraising wing and a prayer. Paul, the community liaison manager at Sheffield’s Parkwood Academy, and wife Judy were competing in the Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally which saw them drive through six European countries to glamorous Monaco and back in a £500 20-year-old Subaru Impreza. But for Paul and Judy, all their hours on the road were worth it as they raised more than £2,000 for Sheffield’s only hospice. Beginning in Namur, Belgium and finishing in Monte Carlo, the 3,000km route took the couple and fellow old banger fans through Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France on a journey that included such famous locations as the Black Forest, Lake Como and the Gotthard Pass. “This was an incredible way to raise money for St Luke’s and the support from Paul’s school, Parkwood Academy, and their many sponsors and friends was fantastic,” said hospice community fundraising manager Megan Senior.

Put a smile on your face TAKE A SHORT DRIVE AND ESCAPE THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE CITY AT ASTON HALL HOTEL, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. “
alk about idyllic,” my partner mouths, so as not to startle the ducks and moorhens blithely sticking their bottoms in the air, while a hooligan crew of white geese cruise about looking for trouble. There are few pleasures in life greater than a drive out to the countryside for dinner. And when we arrived in Swallownest on a warm summers evening, spitting feathers after a lengthy stroll round Rother Valley lake, the first glimpse of Aston Hall Hotel on the horizon was enough to bring a smile to a Queens Guard. Rebuilt after a fire in 1772, the Grade II listed building is steeped in history, though it has found itself on the receiving end of several restorations over the years and is now viewed as more of a luxury retreat than a manor house that once played host to Lord Byron’s affair with Lady Frances Webster (the wife of his best friend). Nowadays, the audience and interior décor is more corporate, but the grand entrance still exudes both a sense of history and wealth, and after a quick mosey round the gardens, which, we’re told by a garrulous groundsman, were built so that visitors to the estate could travel between them by carriage. We were greeted in the Bamford restaurant by a basket of fresh-baked, crisp on the outside soft on the inside poppy seed and sesame seed bloomers. Ok, so not as glamorous as a horsedrawn carriage, but when topped with the smoothest butter, it got the evening off to a great start.

My appetiser of gazpacho with whipped goats’ cheese, salsa, homemade rosemary focaccia and balsamic pearl (£5.95) was a harmonious, refined assembly. The whipped goats’ cheese was just that – silky soft – and the earthy gazpacho, seasoned with a snowdrift of balsamic pearl, perfectly complemented the crunch of the bread. My partner’s truffled beef was unfeasibly glossy and the perfect foil for the medley of sweet, rich and salty port and truffle sauce – the tender, ruby meat muddling with the puddle of crisp paprika fries. No tricks, just fireworks. Next up was a delicate medley of roast chicken with sautéed Jersey royals (£14.95) – a perfectly balanced plate that brought with it intense charred leek and squid ink purée, asparagus, peas and pancetta. Accompanied by a side of rocket and parmesan salad (£2.50), the dish was full of flavour and texture, the chicken faultlessly marrying with the bite of the asparagus and the smoky ham contrasting the hints of sweetness from the purée. Perfectly pink in the middle, my partner’s 8oz sirloin steak (£17.95), served with grilled mushroom, onion rings, homemade chips, rocket and tomato salad, was incredibly tender and required very little cutting effort, the charred exterior giving way to flesh that was juicy and lightly tangy. My properly wobbly dessert of elderflower and pear panna cotta (£4.95) was worth celebrating. With its lovely, moist gingerbread and syrup-soaked crumb and accompanying
poached pear, it was the epitome of a stunning summer pudding; the texture comfortingly silken, the heady floral scent coming through with every bite. And then there is my partner’s deliciously thick warm chocolate and marshmallow cake (£4.95); served in a dense block and topped with sauce, for an added buzz of sweetness, the crème anglaise helped to offset the intensity of the chocolate and the strawberries added a welcome hint of sharpness. Once more, a perfectly thought out plate. Earlier in the year head chef Craig Simpson and his team were awarded an AA Rosette for culinary excellence, and on the evidence of the service and food on our visit, it has many more plaudits ahead, even if it’s no longer a pilgrimage for literary aficionados (although you never know if there’s a poet hidden away in Darcy House). Find a new best friend GIVE A DOG A SECOND CHANCE WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM SHEFFIELD DOG RESCUE. BY HANNAH SANDERS. here’s something about having a pet that makes a home complete. And when you choose to adopt a dog from a local rescue centre you can be sure your new family member will truly appreciate your loving care. Sheffield Dog Rescue, founded in 1984 by Mavis Goodrich, is a charity that was set up to help give neglected or abandoned dogs a second chance at life with a loving new family. Nowadays, many of the dogs are brought in by the North East Derbyshire dog warden, along with the public, after their original owners could no longer care for them. Sheffield Dog Rescue is staffed by a small army of volunteers who are dedicated to ensuring all the dogs receive the upmost care and are re-homed to the best possible family, giving them the happy life they deserve. Each dog’s temperament, age and behaviour is different, which is why the passionate staff work hard to match the dog to the potential owner. The charity also works with professional dog trainers and behaviour counsellors to provide the dogs with extra support when necessary. All of the rescued dogs receive initial vaccinations,

are microchipped, deflead and dewormed. They also cover the cost of spaying or neutering each dog and new owners receive one year’s free membership to Sheffield Dog Rescue. The kennels are located at Mosborough, Sheffield where the dogs can be viewed by appointments. Having a dog is rewarding and the bond you and your family will create with one is lifelong. Once you have decided to adopt, visit the kennels and talk to the knowledgeable staff. When you’ve made that connection with the dog, the team encourage you to take the dog on a few walks to see if you are the right fit. After this, you pay a £120 adoption fee and the staff always do follow-up checks to make sure the dog and yourself are both happy and settled. However, even if now isn’t the right time

for you to adopt a dog, Sheffield Dog Rescue always welcome voluntary dog walkers, as all of the dogs need to be exercised and socialised as much as possible. All of the work they do wouldn’t be possible without public donations and fundraising, which the team do twice a month at Crystal Peaks. They take along Freddie, who has become a big hit with the locals – and answer all the public’s questions about adopting. You can keep up to date on their next appearance and latest news by following their Facebook. One recent example of public generosity is an eight year old called Fraser, who was determined to raise as much possible to help care for the dogs. He put together a yard sale, and made an impressive £36 which the team at Sheffield Dogs Rescue were extremely grateful for. and the odds are you will M Norway, be asked about the cost of a round of drinks. Never mind the Vikings, mountain trolls or mystical beasts reputed to lurk in the depths of the fjords, it’s the legend of the pricey pint that seems to linger in the British consciousness. So, to answer your question, around £8 for a ‘large beer’ that I reckon was just short of a pint, and the same for a glass of wine. Pricey enough to deter the stag and hen crowd, but not quite enough to demand total abstinence. Just go careful… and don’t get involved in any big rounds. We were staying in Stavanger, a large, bustling port just over an hour’s flight from
Newcastle Airport on BMI Regional. The harbour is the heart of the town with navy boats and cruise ships jostling for position while the water’s edge is busy with bars (where those prices certainly don’t seem to act as a deterrent) and fancy seafood restaurants. Head for the narrow, winding streets away from the waterfront and you’ll find many more dining and drinking opportunities, along with plenty of designer shops. There is also a large oil terminal further along the bay, a solid symbol of the reasons for those signs of prosperity. On 23 December, 1969 Norway struck an offshore oil field rich enough to guarantee the nation’s wealth for generations to come.

From that day onwards, Stavanger was slowly transformed from a dying community where sardine canning was the main form of employment, to the boom town of today. With so much to see and all of it within close proximity, Stavanger is an ideal weekend break location. A city stroll to get your bearings is a sensible first step, and this will inevitably lead you to Old Stavanger, a truly lovely area of steep cobbled streets, perfect wooden houses gleaming with white and pastel shades, immaculate gardens and hanging baskets. This is also where you will find the sardine canning museum. OK, so reading that sentence didn’t make your pulse quicken, but trust me, this place is a gem. Take a guided tour courtesy of museum manager Piers Crocker, an Englishman who married a local girl and never left, and lose yourself for an hour in his fishy tale of the local industry that reflects the town’s fluctuating pre-oil fortunes… and don’t forget to pick up a tin of chocolate sardines from the gift shop on your way out. There are other ways to see the sights. A Segway tour of street art, which seems to be embraced locally rather than dismissed as cultural vandalism, saw me tackling an unlikely form of transport. Thankfully our guide Rami stashed his machines in an

underground car park, which was deserted and therefore the perfect place to find your balance before taking to the streets. Those gentle practice runs did not quite prepare us for the more demanding task of going uphill on wet, leafstrewn cobbles, but even the most ungainly member of our group (i.e. me) quickly got the hang of it and lived to tell the tale. All this activity, and the bracing sea air, will work up a healthy appetite. For seafood lovers Fisketorget, which has a dominant position at the top of the harbour, is a combined restaurant and fish market where I ate tremendous creamy fish soup with crunchy croutons and pan-fried hake with baked root vegetables, spinach, celeriac purée and shellfish sauce. Over the course of our weekend we also enjoyed local venison at Hall Toll, another harbour-side restaurant in the old customs building, and char-grilled squid and steak at Renaa Maltbaren, the informal, contemporary sister bistro of a rather more sedate Michelin-
starred venue next door. After dark the bars are packed, and with canopies, heaters and blankets as standard, sitting outdoors with a cold beer is a yearlong pastime. Dress accordingly, of course, this is northern Europe so fleeces, hats, gloves and waterproofs are always travel essentials. We stayed at the Victoria Hotel, in the heart of the town on the harbour edge and pleasingly traditional. The rooms were modern and pristine, but the best thing about the hotel was the staggeringly good buffet breakfasts. Forget your wormy bacon and fried eggs turning to bullets under heat lamps, we were offered vegetable juice shots and fruit smoothies, inventive salads of spinach, watermelon and pinenuts, smoked salmon, beetroot, pickled cucumbers and the local black bread. It was healthy, invigorating and a positively lifeenhancing way to start the day. Away from the busy town, fjords and mountains dominate the landscape and even on a short stay it’s essential to get a taste of
the true Norwegian wilderness. A 30-minute coach trip to the outskirts of the neighbouring town of Sandnes took us to the starting point for an exhilarating afternoon hike that took us to the top of the Dalsnuten mountain. The last section was suitably strenuous but the rewards came with breath-taking views of the Jaeren region, with distant mountain ranges, lakes and fjords seemingly stretching to infinity, and looking back towards the sea, an equally dazzling view of Stavanger glistening in the late afternoon sun. We’d already packed for all weathers, of course, and this particular afternoon stroll definitely required hiking boots. Our final morning left one thing to be ticked off our ‘must do’ list and that was the fjord cruise from Stavanger to Pulpit Rock, a steep cliff which rises 604 metres above the Lysefjorden. The view from the top of the rock is the shot you’ll see in all the guide books, and it’s one of Norway’s most popular tourist destinations for those with the energy to tackle a full day’s walk with a strenuous climb at the end. I must admit, floating in the bay looking up at the sheer rock face, I suddenly wished I was one of those hikers on top of the rock looking down. Maybe next time.

Champion, was the R Snooker inspiration behind a ground-breaking Sheffield social enterprise, set up by his son, Stephen Harrison following his death. Inspired by his father’s legacy, Stephen went on to play snooker professionally for twelve years, before becoming a UK and world qualified snooker coach and setting up The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy in 2007. Fuelled by his passion for the sport and, in particular, for increasing access to the game, The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy is a non-profit enterprise based in Sheffield providing snooker coaching and competitions for a wide variety of disadvantaged groups. “The focus of our work is with young offenders, people with physical and learning disabilities or mental health problems and young people and adults not in education, 44 Image | www.imagemagazine.co.uk
employment or training,” says Stephen. “My father, Ray Harrison, was highly successful at playing this sport and also in promoting snooker to many disabled people. He was in a wheelchair, a victim of polio, but he had learned how to lift and move his body into certain positions which gave him full control of the table. “He was such an inspiration and because of him I know that snooker is not only accessible to people with physical handicaps, but it is also a terrific sport for helping people with weak, concentrative powers. “I train people who find focussing on strategy difficult, helping them learn where to position the balls and which part of a ball to strike with the cue, and have found that with patience, respect and specialised tuition they can enjoy the sport, follow the rules and learn how to improve their standards.” Since launching the academy, Stephen has
gone on to set-up the UK Snooker Awards, a national project aimed at kick-starting snooker at grassroots level, and the enterprise has continued to grow – proving that snooker can help young people, in particular, with complex needs such as autism, Aspergers and ADHD with social skills, numeracy, literacy, concentration, confidence, independence, dexterity, hand-eye coordination, nutrition and employment opportunities “A lot of the children struggle to cope in social situations and can find it daunting when first join the club. Once they get into it and start making friends though, you see the concentration they channel into the game and

just how much their confidence increases and attitudes and lifestyles evolve. We even see children attending the club independently, which is a huge step. “Once members turn eighteen, we also offer them the opportunity to become a voluntary coach, so that they can continue to play snooker throughout their adult life and pass on their skills to the younger children who attend – with the hope that this will eventually lead on to securing fulltime work.” In April, the academy staged the fourth National Junior Disability Snooker Championship and Stephen hopes that it will continue to grow across South Yorkshire and eventually take-off worldwide. “We want to encourage more and more young people, both boys and girls, to get involved and while we’re focused on growing the enterprise from its grass roots here in Sheffield right now, in the long-term I’d love to see it expand worldwide and snooker be reinvigorated and reintroduced into the Paralympics, where it hasn’t been played since 1988. “I watched the Paralympics in pride and wonder and to see well trained athletes performing to such incredible standards in spite of their disabilities was truly inspiring. Quick, skilful movements, bordering on the dangerous at times, were exciting to watch and the satisfaction the athletes felt because of their achievements was a joy to see. “With this in mind, I’m asking for support in backing my dream and we’ll be fundraising in the local community as we

I’m so grateful that my son James has been able to attend the Stephen Harrison snooker sessions over the last six/seven years. James is a young man on the autistic spectrum and as such, he has difficulties with social communication and interaction. He has a very limited range of unusually strong and narrow interests, so I was surprised and delighted when he first said he wanted to join the snooker club. Over the years, it has helped him develop his social skills by mixing with other young people and he now has another interest we went to see the World Championships at the Crucible earlier this year and James wants to continue to play snooker as a leisure activity throughout his adult life. Playing snooker has helped James learn about persistence, focus and concentration. Keeping score helps with maths and it has significantly improved his hand-eye coordination. Going to snooker on Saturdays was also James’ first experience of spending time away from his family, apart from school, and he even appeared on BBC Look North last year talking about the snooker club. All in all it’s had a big impact on his independence, confidence and maturity. And, in turn, I’ve really appreciated having that time at the weekends to give me a bit of a break. The club has such a lovely atmosphere, it’s a calm environment but full of fun too. The staff are so friendly and encouraging and you feel like you’re part of a big, extended family. This is all down to Stephen. He is such an inspirational man, with a huge passion for the sport and, in particular, for increasing access to the game for people with disabilities. James has since continued to attend the club as a volunteer, helping with various jobs such as cleaning the tables, and this has also had another positive impact James has been able to include this on his CV when applying for jobs, he can talk about snooker at interviews and Steve has kindly agreed to provide a reference for him. Very recently, James has accepted a parttime job and I firmly believe that attending the snooker sessions were a vital part of this journey. I cannot praise Stephen and the snooker club highly enough for the huge impact it has had on James’ life and on mine too. I am sure other families feel the same. Telling it as it was THERE IS MUCH TO LEARN FROM SUCCESSFUL SHEFFIELD BUSINESSMAN SIR HUGH SYKES, WHO REVEALS ALL IN A NEW BOOK FROM RMC MEDIA. he deal was, to say the least, a big one. At stake was the chance to become a world leader in the market. All that was standing in the way was one shareholder. Trouble was, the shareholder was American. And he was not about to sell to an English buyer. End of story. Not quite. Because the buyer in question was Hugh Sykes and he wasn’t about to be put off by the repeated rebuffs. Where hardnosed business talk had failed, charm succeeded. The resourceful Mr Sykes located an English stately home where the aristocratic owner would, for a fee, entertain guests to dinner and an overnight stay. So it was that the two men and their wives dined in state, enjoying impeccable service from the butler and his staff, plus a tour of the place with the Lord of the Manor himself. The American couple were bowled over by this display of English hospitality, and all resistance to the big deal melted. The tale says a lot about Sir Hugh Sykes, and he in turn says a great deal about the business world in his new book Lighting the Furnace – the story of a burning ambition (RMC Media, £16.95). In it, he recalls a business career which saw him take a small homespun business in the Derbyshire village of Bamford and build it

into a serious international player which he later sold for a cool £72million. Yet this is not just another dry business biography. Sir Hugh devotes significant space to special quick-reference sections aimed at providing basic advice for those who would seek to emulate his achievements. As such, it is required reading for the would-be entrepreneur. Endorsements come in the shape of a warm reception from the likes of former Prime Minister Sir John Major, who welcomed the book with the comment “There is much to learn from him”. The Sykes name, of course, has a special resonance in Sheffield. Even those unaware of his business achievements will forever associate him with the transformation of the city’s East End in his role as Chairman of the Sheffield Development Corporation, which oversaw radical and permanent changes to the previously run-down area of the Lower Don Valley. The efforts of the SDC changed the face of the city forever. But it was not all plain sailing. A chapter dealing with the story of the regeneration has the ominous title Mutiny and Chaos. Sir Hugh does not shy away from telling it as it was, with opposition both internal and political. As such, it’s a fascinating insight into the Sheffield of the eighties and nineties.

Dream drive PHOEBE SEYMOUR TAKES THE MG3 STYLE FOR A SPIN. he MG3 Style is newly arrived at Eric Stead – the MG car specialist – and the dealership are so proud of it, they invited me to take a test drive. Sales adviser, Dennis Berry, met me at their showroom with the key and explained why the MG3 Style is such a dream to drive. “The Style is one of the best in the range,” said Dennis. “There’s only one other above this one and that’s the Style Lux. The engine hummed quietly and every gear change was effortless. First, I drove up to Wentworth to see how the MG handled the narrow country roads. It passed with flying colours, even when faced with road works and temporary traffic lights in the village. Then it was time to get on the motorway

and pick up some speed. Again, the transition up the gears was easy and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Boasted as being perfect for city driving, I thought it only right to take in Sheffield city centre. After navigating the narrow roads of Wentworth village, the city streets were a breeze to zip through. Finally, I found a car park to practice some manoeuvres in. Although, reversing into spaces was fairly simple, it was reassuring to hear the bleep of the sensor alarm when I was getting close to a car behind me. As I returned to my own car, I realised why I was so reluctant to give the MG3 Style back
– it actually makes driving fun. Navigating city streets and country roads is – dare I say it – an enjoyable experience. You can even have fun personalising the colour and design, from Hello Yellow with a playful Emoticons roof, to the modest Rose Red MG I drove for the day. With brilliant customer service and every type of MG, from a pristine 1979 MGB GT to the larger MG GS SUV on display, it’s no wonder Eric Stead continues to be the most reputable MG dealership around.
