Austria has a wine producing history dating back many centuries. Numerous people have found the delights ofAustrianwineswhilstholidayingtheremaybe

of Austrian wines whilst holidaying there, maybe perhaps visiting or working in Austria. I searched for an Austrian company that offffers an excellent range of quality wines – be it someone’s preference for red, white, sparkling or a ‘pink’ one. W Weeingut Nastl is a major producer of wines, including many award-winning productions and islocated in the Kamptal region of the country, with the winery being situated in Langenlois. Nastl winemaking has a history from 1656 and, today, the company very much participates in the reductions of interventions, to produce affffordable, outstanding wines, with quality and attractive presentations. Gravity is utilised, to a great advantage, in their winemaking process, furthering reduced interventions.

An excellent red wine, as a good ‘all-rounder’ which pairs with casseroles and red meats very well. The Nastl family pride themselves on commitment and dedication, producing delectable wines to a high standard. The traditional Austrian on-site restaurant, plus tastings and tours, are further very popular features of the winery.

A new lease of life AFTER 70

Retirement sparked new motivation and new experiences for Mal Harris, which he shares in a self-published book.

yourself without motivation once working life comes to an end. After all what are you going to do with yourself with so much time

day? What will your purpose be? These were all questions now 73-year-old Mal Harris asked himself as he approached 70 in 2022. For his part, Mal, who spent his working career mainly in banking with the Audit Commission in Eckington and local authorities, determined to keep his mind active. Mal’s wife, Denise, continued to work for the NHS and apart from household chores and duties, Mal was free to work on a project and so took to writing.

First off, he wrote a play about old age, a dark comedy called ‘Being so Cheerful’. He followed this by writing a children’s picture book, ‘Shubby and the Mammacs’ about a little girl, based on his own daughter and her three magical animal friends. Finally, Mal plucked up courage and wrote his memoirs, ‘A Mere Mortal’ which he self-published in 2019.

Physically, Mal continued to play tennis regularly at Ridgeway Tennis Club, where his favourite pastime, photography. Then came the turning point. Mal reached 70. Could he maintain his zest for life, especially the physical activities he had pursued up until then?

Certainly, Mal could continue to support his beloved Blades for whom his late cousin Trevor Hockey had been such an icon in the seventies with his great friend Tony Currie. It was in fact at Bramall Lane that a friend in the seat alongside suggested that Mal have a look at the over-sixties football at

gym complex on Moss Way. Initially, he was still playing tennis, so politely declined.

However, when a shoulder injury interrupted these activities, he went along to watch. Within a month Mal was playing sevena-side football on reduced size pitches, and thoroughly enjoying a sport he had previously played some 60 years earlier!

It was last year, that it became clear that my Mal’s memoirs needed updating. In July 2024 he published a second edition of ‘A Mere Mortal: From child genius to obscurity’ to include more of his recent available through Amazon and KDP on Kindle, as well as through booksellers online such as Waterstones. A Mere Mortal can be

Crystal Peaks library too.

A Mere Mortal is a fun, witty episodic account of Mal’s life from birth in Gwent, early years and schooling in Churchdown, Gloucestershire, through university in Swansea including a year spent teaching in Normandy in 1972/3. It also acts as a piece

in a world without laptops, mobile phones and streaming, not to mention dishwashers,

The story continues, to include exciting ventures on stage in Swindon amateur theatre in the Old Town and at the Wyvern,

in Mal’s own photographic studio in Truro, and on air on commercial radio in Cornwall, Devon and the Scillies with Pirate FM, encountering and interviewing

and enjoying sports and hobbies here and abroad. Needless to say, not all of these adventures ended in unmitigated success!

Celebrities who make an appearance include Seb Coe, Linda Lusardi (who opened Mal’s photographic studio)

Sotherton, television’s Ruth Langsford, Olivia Newton-John, the ‘Street’s Chloe Newsome, artist Pete McKee and footballer Andy Cole.

What Mal could not have predicted at that time was that by the end of 2024 he would have embarked on another of his more-or-less abandoned hobbies again. Crags Radio, a community-based radio station in Creswell, were looking for presenters. Having previously volunteered and dabbled in commercial radio, Pirate FM and Malibu FM in Cornwall, Mal hesitatingly approached Crags, and to his delight was accepted. It is now a pleasant challenge to produce his own two-hour sixties show once a week every Tuesday.

Gathering Landscapes

For 150 years, Weston Park Museum has treasured aspects of the world around them. Opening on Friday 28 November, a new exhibition curated by Heavy Water Collective, artists Maud Haya-Baviera, Victoria Lucas and Joanna Whittle, examines the curious, beautiful, macabre and magical connections people have made to the land. Gathering Landscapes presents eclectic museum collections, spanning art and archaeology through to natural science and social history.

Humans have long sought to make sense of the natural world through art, ritual and the act of collecting. Science, industry and farming have transformed our relationship with the land, with nature

and culture often in opposition. This sacred landscape is also a lucrative natural resource. Yet our spiritual connection to the land remains.

Heavy Water Collective draw from archives and collections to create artworks that reclaim narratives in a contemporary context. Gathering Landscapes: 150 Years of Collecting at Weston Park Museum sees them delve

enduring, fundamental connections to the land. Bringing together artwork, artefacts and archival material, alongside work by the artists themselves, this playful treasure-trove invites visitors to consider the collection, and the historical stories it tells, in new and surprising ways.

Forming multiple and unexpected connections, the displays ask us to resist the idea of nature as static and separate. Instead, our evolving connection with the world around us is framed through ideas of ritual and meaning, exploitation and loss, and ultimately, joy, hope and resilience.
