It’s the mother of all musicals –September.
Mamma Mia!, the feelgood musical with a score of irresistible ABBA songs, runs from 15-16 September and will transform the Lyceum into a Greek paradise to tell a story of of love, friendship and identity. It follows Sophie’s quest to discover the father she’s never known and brings her mother face to face with three men from her distant romantic past on the eve of a wedding they’ll never forget.
Created by Judy Craymer, it is a recordbreaking super trouper of a show seen by over 70 million people worldwide, in 50 countries and 16 different languages.
This production stars Lydia Hunt as Goldthrop as Bill, Luke Jasztal as Sam and Richard Meek as Harry.
Working with writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd, Craymer managed to achieve a landmark theatrical triumph with blockbuster, crossgenerational appeal. She was working in royalty Tim Rice in the early 1980s when the time were collaborating with Rice on Chess. The access Craymer had to the ABBA pair was crucial.
“I had to pester them for a long time!” she laughs.
It was Johnson who suggested centring the story on a mother and daughter. Together with Lloyd, she and Craymer put together a female-led show full of affection, with a playful nod to Greek tragedy. The strength of that narrative, Craymer believes, sets Mamma Mia! apart. musical,” she says. “It’s an original stage musicals and theatre-going culture.”
In New York, it helped revitalise Broadway after 9/11, proving a balm for theatre-goers. Its return, says Craymer, feels very special.
“It’s inspiring to see that the show still has huge cultural resonance.” Mamma to return in the UK after the Covid crisis, and again, proved a tonic. “It offers more important to audiences in times of it’s almost therapeutic.”

This summer is building up to be a sizzler, not only in terms of temperatures but also the incredible diversity of things to see and do that we now have available in our region. Over the coming months I shall be exploring the very best of what our region has to offer and sharing the highlights with you.
The team at Wentworth Woodhouse launched the 2026 exhibition ‘showcase’ Echoes of the House: Lives in Light and Motion on 7 July. The exhibition transforms the State Rooms with digital storytelling techniques, revealing unexpected and surprising stories from the house by those who shaped it and those that shape it today. Drawing inspiration from historic storytelling devices such as zoetropes and magic lanterns, the exhibition combines striking physical installations with immersive digital experiences. Visitors encounter emotional narratives of real people brought vividly to life, alongside spectacular moments of visual wonder.
Building on the success of the smallscale exhibition If Walls Could Talk from 2021, Echoes of the House embraces the spirit of Phantasmagoria: a constantly shifting world of optical effects, illusions, and fantastical assemblages, creating an exhibition that surprises, delights and reimagines how heritage stories can be told. It’s all very exciting and I believe, quite groundbreaking in the way we are delivering storytelling. The exhibition runs until the beginning of November.

In July I was fortunate to be invited to the launch of the new exhibition ‘Collecting Rotherham’, a major new temporary exhibition at Clifton Park Museum. Running until Spring 2027, the exhibition invites visitors to travel through 130 years of collecting, showcasing everything from the museum’s very oldest acquisitions to its most recent additions – including items that have never been displayed before.
Clifton Park Museum has been collecting since 1893 and now cares for over 75,000 objects. The size of the collection means they can’t display everything at once;
designed to spotlight these lesser-seen treasures. Spanning six galleries, the

Far from a traditional display, the exhibition highlights the odd and eccentric, provoking ideas about the key role museum collections play in producing knowledge and histories, and how the act of collecting world. To bring these concepts to life, the exhibition features a thought-provoking, immersive experience created by Urban Projections, aka Rebecca Smith.
Set within the beautiful Clifton Park, a visit to the museum over the summer offers a full day out at no cost as admission to Clifton Park Museum and the Collecting Rotherham exhibition is free. What’s not to like?

Peak District Highland Games Marks 10th Anniversary at Matlock Farm Park.
The Peak District Highland Games returns to Matlock Farm Park on Sunday 30 August 2026, celebrating a decade of bringing strength, spectacle and Scottish tradition to the heart of Derbyshire.
Now in its 10th year, the much-loved event promises another thrilling day of competition as some of the UK’s top strongmen and strongwomen go headto-head in a series of crowd-pleasing challenges. Spectators can relax in the grandstand or settle onto traditional straw bales to enjoy the action-packed programme.

Sparkling chandeliers hang overhead, stunning artwork adorns the walls, and carefully chosen fabrics create an atmosphere of effortless elegance and sophistication. Longbow Venues’ newest venture has transformed the stunning former Royal Bank of Scotland building into one of Bakewell’s most striking dining destinations.
We began our evening in the bar, arriving just in time for the live music. There’s something undeniably special about the

After much deliberation, my companion settled on one of the Flapper Favourites, the Clover Club (£12), while I opted for the Faux French Martini (£9), which was every bit as indulgent as its alcoholic counterpart.
For our evening meal, we made our way upstairs via the grand staircase to the restaurant. Much to our delight, the gentle sounds of the piano were still able
to be heard, creating a relaxed ambience throughout the meal. The music can even be experienced from the outdoor terrace, ensuring that wherever you’re seated, you’re immersed in the atmosphere.
To start, I chose the Sweet & Sour Glazed Duck Bonbon (£11.50), served with sesame crispy rice and an Asian slaw. It was a beautifully balanced dish and a thoughtful nod to Longbow Venues’ founder, Rob Hattersley, and his family, showcasing the personal touches that make every Longbow venue feel unique. My companion selected the Poached Halibut (£12.50), elegantly presented with a caper beurre blanc and crispy vegetables. It was delicate, beautifully cooked and bursting

After a quick clean-up, we headed to the Prince of Wales for a bit of dinner. We were greeted by the lovely Lilli who showed us to the bar area and offered us a drinks menu. With the sweat still dripping off my forehead, I ordered us two Hendricks gin
and tonics with cucumber, which quickly hit the spot, and I started to regain some sort of normal temperature.
The menu consists of six starters, seven mains and a grill section for steaks. It is a great mix of pub classics like burger and
twists. It is also full of local ingredients - Wye Valley asparagus, Derbyshire lamb rump (indeed, all the meat is from Derbyshire), and Dovedale blue cheese. A lot of chefs proclaim to use local produce but just pay it lip service, but here at the Prince of Wales they clearly care about local farmers.
Once seated at our table, the starters came quickly. I had ‘Miranda’ tomatoes with blue cheese, jalapeno and Henderson’s relish and vodka dressing. The ‘Miranda’ tomatoes (again locally grown) were sweet and everything a summer tomato should be. The whole dish was beautifully presented out on its own.
Dad chose Derbyshire lamb chops served with jungle curry, mint and coriander. The two plump and tender chops were delicate and rich, and the spicing was perfect.
To accompany it we had a fantastic Australian Shiraz, as recommended by
Lilli. My theory was that if it’s hot like this in Australia, the wine must suit today’s temperature, which gave my dad a chuckle. For mains we both wanted the Cornish

Three decades, one unforgettable celebration
Hundreds of customers, friends, former staff and special guests came together last month to celebrate the 30th anniversary of restaurants.
Nonnas on Ecclesall Road marked the milestone with an afternoon and evening of live music, entertainment, dancing and memories, bringing together people who have been part of the restaurant’s doors in 1996.

The importance of using a solicitor to draft your will has been highlighted by a case in which charities lost £1 million of inheritance because a will was not properly witnessed and therefore found to be invalid.

Four years after drafting a will in 2014 that left the bulk of her estate to her two goddaughters, a retired doctor decided to revise her wishes and had a new will drafted by a will-writing company. One of the goddaughters

amount of money to her goddaughters in the revised will, with the bulk of her estate to be divided between four charities: Médecins Sans Frontières, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Dogs Trust and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
When the new will was written, a member ofstafff f from the will-writing company visited the doctor’s home to have the will signed and witnessed. However, she did not bring a second person with her and signature, where it was signed by another staffffmember. As the doctor was not present for the second signature, the will became invalid. For a will to be valid, two witnesses must sign the will in each other’s presence and in the presence of the testator.
When the doctor died later that year, the new will was declared invalid due to the issue with the second witness.
Consequently, probate was issued on the
