Ideas of the BODY
Sarah Villeneau’s ceramics are familiar yet strange, writes Rosie Brennan.

UGH, Ceramic, rope, synthetic hair piece, found pottery shard, solder, miniature religious book with bristles, hazel stick
Photography by Jamie
FEATURE
Artist Sarah Villeneau lives and works in Doncaster, in a large ramshackle studio at C-View, the old Doncaster Art College. Her work is inspired by the physiology of the body and organic form and texture. Her approach is intuitive, trusting the material to help guide the process to produce work that conjures ideas of the body, evoking the visceral, whilst also suggestive of landscape, fossilised remains or a relic of a bygone age - familiar, yet strange, uncomfortable, intriguing. The work is highly tactile, inviting touch, and sometimes has interactive elements - recorded sound, or parts that move or can be played.
Over the last three years, Villeneau has
starting with Collect Open in 2023 - part of the international annual Collect Art Fair in London. This saw a sea change in her work - going bigger and bolder, and combining non-ceramic materials in an assemblage approach e.g. found objects, solder, cord, hair, pottery shards, and, to some extent, sound. In 2024, she exhibited at Ceramic Art London, Festival of the
and had a solo show, Visceral Echoes, at the wonderful gallery at Danum Gallery Library and Museum.
This might be in the form of guitar wires
can be played, or percussive pieces. The exhibition at the Millennium Gallery as part of Festival of the Mind incorporated electroacoustic recordings inside sculptures, and at the DGLAM exhibition one of the pieces had a speaker inside in which you could hear of a recording of ants scuttling about in the undergrowth.
Villeneau invited Juxta voices, the
which she is a member, to create a piece responding to the works on show and using an assemblage of ceramic pieces to create sound alongside the vocal performance. The combinations of both sound and mixed media are done in the spirit of ‘make do and mend’ - bringing a lightness of touch and a sense of humour to the work.
This year she has shown at West Dean College in Sussex, where she is a tutor, and Contemporary Ceramics Gallery in London. Doing Collect Art Fair was transformational - it not only pushed Villeneau’s practice to a whole new level, but was also wonderful to see the work looking at home in such a beautiful and iconic building. It was the catalyst for the subsequent opportunities to show at Ceramic Art London and DGLAM in 2024. Although Villeneau has had solo

opportunity in such a large space and with a large body of work. The response to the exhibition was very positive, consolidating
of the show will be coming out soon.
From 11 months old, she lived in America, roaming free in the countryside of upstate New York, soaking up the natural world around her and collecting strange objects (and sometimes small wild creatures!), creating her own little Cabinets of Curiosities and a world of make-believe.
A family tragedy and subsequent move back to the UK at age 15 was a huge wrench at such a developmental age, leaving her adrift in a world she did not recognise. Enrolling on a pottery evening class in her twenties, she fell in love with clay - it felt like reconnecting with the land she left behind and that the world could made sense with this material in her hands.
voice, with numerous twists and turns along

opportunity to do an MA at Loughborough University in 2012 that she was able to experiment and develop her own signature style of visceral abstract sculpture.
After three extremely busy years, the artist is taking it a bit more slowly this year and also trying out a new direction. Her next public event will be at Compton Verney in Warwickshire at Potfest by the Lake, 20-22 June, but behind the scenes she will be working on a project with scientists at Birmingham University investigating the Gut Microbiome, and continuing her exploration of sound recordings in the wild. In the meantime, people can visit the studio by appointment, sign up to the newsletter (on average about four per year), and/or follow the artist on Instagram to keep updated. Whilst Villeneau does not run regular classes, she can accommodate small groups by private arrangement.

This might not be the most obvious pairing but there’s a certain harmony between them that feels fresh, uplifting, and surprisingly versatile. Are open-plan kitchens still the way to go?
By Mary Major
When designing a new kitchen, one of the first questions people ask is: should we go open-plan? For many families, mine included, the answer is often yes. With young children, it’s a game-changer. Open-plan living allows me to cook, clean, and keep a watchful eye while my kids... well, find new ways to cause mischief!
For over a decade, open-plan has dominated, replacing the formal dining rooms of the past that were used once a yearusually for Christmas - and otherwise became storage or homework zones. In my own home, I recently completed a twoyear renovation, transforming a dated bungalow into a bright, sociable family space. The open-plan layout brings in beautiful natural light, and the large sliding doors have connected our kitchen to the garden - now our 'third room' for BBQs, play, and sunshine.
But times are changing. Since the pandemic, more of us work

from home, and the need to create separate zones - for work, rest, and play - has grown. Still, this doesn’t mean going back to closed-off rooms. With clever design - think pocket doors, glass dividers, or acoustic panels - zoning can be both practical and beautiful.
If you’re unsure which layout suits your lifestyle, speak to an experienced kitchen designer. They’ll help you weigh the pros and cons and visualise your ideas with lifelike CAD drawings. The right solution is always personal - it’s not about trends, it’s about how you live.
Most importantly, enjoy the journey. Designing a kitchen can be overwhelming, but the result - a space created just for you - is always worth it.
Happy kitchen planning, Mary

Independent personal & professional “Over the moon!”

Frankie and Yash, from Old Whittington, Chesterfield, were ‘over the moon’ with their new bathroom suite, which was designed and fitted by KC Bathrooms. Here’s what they had to say:
“Craig immediately put us at ease, listened to what we wanted and produced designs in accordance with our wishes. From the moment we met him, we knew we were in safe hands. He was particularly creative in maximising the use of space and we were impressed with his depth of knowledge and innovative approach.
“The installation couldn’t have gone any better; the fitter was polite, punctual and tidy and his craftsmanship was carried out to meticulous standards. Only a few minor tweaks were required, which were sorted immediately.
“We can’t thank KC Bathrooms enough for their incredible standards of service. Our new bathroom suite, complete with rain shower, is exactly what we wanted. The wall and floor tiling complement everything beautifully.
“We are so pleased with the work of KC Bathrooms that we commissioned them to do a further project – to design and fit an en-suite shower and toilet in our master bedroom.
“We are delighted with the work of KC Bathrooms and would 100 per cent recommend them.”

Fresh FLAVOURS
Sam
Pegg visits The Ashford Arms to try their new menu.
eautifully set in the picturesque Peak District village of Ashford in the Water, the team behind The Ashford Arms has been welcoming locals and visitors alike for just over a year. With a completely refreshed menu introducing bold a few best-loved classics, this charming listed building with its characterful interior and extensive outdoor seating is a perfect stop for walkers, couples or anyone looking for excellent, locally sourced food in a stunning spot.
We settled into their bright indoor-outdoor seating area on a sunny afternoon, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. The new menu has been carefully crafted, putting seasonal, sustainable, local produce front and centre, with suppliers including New Close Farm in Over Haddon, Winster in Buxton.
To start, I chose the new pan-fried scallops (£13.95), beautifully cooked and paired with fennel and baby spinach purée, crisp grilled asparagus and vegetable
crisps – a light yet vibrant opener. Across the table, my dining companion went for another new addition, the pork and smoked paprika scotch egg (£10.95) – golden and crisp with a perfectly soft yolk, a punchy herb mayo and fresh rocket salad.
For mains, I stuck with a classic – the
rare with triple-cooked chips, roasted vine tomatoes and a Portobello mushroom
is something many places don’t quite get right, but here it was perfectly cooked,
with the new menu, choosing the lambchetta
grilled pitta. A creative, summery plate that
lightly, sharing ice cream (£6.95) and an Affogato with Frangelico (£9.95) – ideal for the hot weather. The dessert menu itself is impressive, with options like spiced mango and pistachio tiramisu and
exotic fruit semifreddo with mint and basil espuma, smoked almond praline and berry coulis.
The Ashford Arms leans into its idyllic surroundings with charm, from the listed building and friendly welcome to excellent local coffee and wine. There’s parking at the rear, cosy rooms upstairs for overnight stays, and no shortage of scenic walks right on the doorstep.
The care and thought behind the new menu really shines through, showcasing clever combinations, fresh ingredients and respect for great local produce. Whether you’re visiting after a countryside walk, staying the night or just popping in for a special meal, The Ashford Arms is a lovely spot to relax and enjoy a proper taste of the Peaks – and the new menu is a reason to keep coming back.

Picture PERFECT
Chris Wilson heads to North Yorkshire to sample a quintessential country pub.
The Fox and Hounds (or F&H to go by the modish new pub sign) is ideally placed in the heart of Sinnington, which is close to Castle Howard and the North York Moors Railway and between the little market towns of Pickering and Kirbymoorside.
The village itself is a picture-perfect realisation of what we all think an old-school English village should look like. The River Seven (tinkling gently rather than surging after that dry spring and early summer when we visited) runs through it and there’s an attractive church, a village hall and a beautiful backdrop of rolling hills and lush forests.
Whether you choose the restaurant or the bar, there’s a lovely unhurried and friendly atmosphere at the Fox and Hounds perfectly matched by a menu generously packed with comforting, hearty dishes.
Putting Coquilles St Jacques (£14.50) on the menu may scream 1970s but there were some great things about that beige decade and the combination of king scallops with creamed potatoes, gruyere and breadcrumbs, served in the shell of course, will hopefully never fall out of fashion. This was a classic old-school starter at its best. Another splendid starter was the pan-fried chicken livers with fried onions
on toasted sourdough with a red wine and grape jus (£9.50). Chicken livers are tricky little devils, leave them in the pan for 30 seconds too long and they become as tough as old boots. Thankfully, chef had kept one eye on the clock and the result was a soft, tender treat.
Moving on to mains, a duo of lamb (£32) consisted of a two-bone rack which was
and a tartlet of braised shoulder, inventively topped with feuille de brick. Fear not dear reader, I looked it up, so you don’t have to. It’s a super-thin type of pastry originally from North Africa, and, in contrast with the crisp buttery traditional pastry base and
A simpler but equally impressive plate
potatoes, seasoned vegetables and madeira cream sauce (£38.50) was always going to stand or fall depending on the quality of the steak. This was absolutely top-notch, medium rare, with all the trimmings in order. No need to mess with the formula here. Desserts kept up the dazzlingly high light as air but packed a proper summer fruit punch, accompanied by raspberry ripple
cheesecake (£11) came with meringue shards and a coconut and lime sorbet.
After all that indulgence and an evening stroll through the gloriously quiet village, it was time to retire. Each room has its own individual touches, and we were in the Parr room, named after the family that owned several local estates in the Tudor era. Sir Thomas Parr was a close companion of Henry VIII, and his daughter Catherine
Instead, we enjoyed a blissful night’s sleep in a room that was beautifully decorated with crisp white sheets and a spectacular headboard with a pattern that matched the cushions on the bed and the footboard bench. Some serious thought has gone into every last detail.
After a predictably excellent and generous breakfast it was time, with some reluctance, to move on. Whether you’re looking for an overnight base to break the journey to the coast, or a longer stay to explore this wonderful part of the world in more detail, F&H ticks all the boxes.

PA Jewellery look at the unique qualities – and colours – of tourmaline.
ourmaline offers a beautiful rainbow of colours, with no other gemstone having quite the same range of hues, or even stones that have more than colour!
TThe gem was recognised as a distinct mineral species in the 1800s, often being confused with other gems previously. The name tourmaline originated in Sri Lanka, deriving from the Sinhalese meaning ‘mixed gems’ and referring to the multicoloured assortment of crystals found in the gem gravels of that country.
as pink or green tourmaline, some varieties also have their own names, such as rubellite for red or indicolite for blue.
A rare variety with a vivid blue to
discovered in the state of that name in Brazil although the name is often now applied to similar gems from Mozambique and Nigeria. The presence of traces of copper gives a stunning ‘pop’ to their colour.
It is not uncommon for a single tourmaline crystal to display more than one colour due to alterations in the chemical environment during growth. The crystals form as long prisms with a rounded triangular cross-section and those displaying more than
one hue may vary along the length (so one end of the crystal is one colour and the other end a different colour) or have concentric zones of different colours when viewed in cross-section. Because of the range seen in tourmaline it is possible to see a variety of combinations, but the most common is green and pink. A variety called watermelon tourmaline is often cut into slices to display a bright pink centre framed by an outer zone of green.

Tourmaline also exhibits strong pleochroism, a property that is connected to the way light interacts with a gemstone and means that it can appear different colours when viewed from different directions, in tourmaline’s case often darker and lighter shades of the same colour; darker when viewed along the crystal and lighter when viewed from the side.
It is quite common to encounter carved tourmalines in both jewellery and decorative objects, since it can form in large sizes and such a range of colours. The gem is rather prone to inclusions, and using it in this way, or for beads, cabochons, and rose cut gems, really shows off the beautiful colour in material that would not be especially attractive as a faceted gem. The inclusions can then add texture to the gem’s appearance and give each stone a unique look.

If you would like to learn more about tourmaline or view our tourmaline jewellery please visit our showroom or you can also view some of our tourmaline jewellery on our website.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE
Functional medicine is a personalised and integrative approach to healthcare which involves understanding the prevention, management and root causes of complex chronic diseases. The ultimate goal is to heal disease and promote a healthy life. A healthy life is not defifined as simply an absence of disease, but rather a positive vitality filled with energy, joy, gratitude and balance. The Functional Medicine model evolved from the insights and perspectives of a group of influential scientific leaders who realised the importance of a personalised approach to disease causes based on the evolving research in nutritional science, genomics, and epigenetics.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Functional medicine gives Dr Hula the clinical decisionmaking tools they need to navigate the landscape of illness by exploring all relevant mechanisms. Your personal treatment plan is backed by scientific research. Part of this research involves selecting the most appropriate tests to get the best possible results relevant to you.

Q&A with Simon Roberts & Natasha Fathers of Greaves Wealth Management
Why is intergenerational wealth planning such a big topic now?
Natasha Fathers (Chartered Financial Adviser): Families are thinking ahead - about helping children with house deposits, school fees, or managing inheritance wisely. Good planning can reduce tax and protect family assets for years to come. Isn't estate planning just for the wealthy?
Simon Roberts (Independent Financial Adviser): Not at all. With frozen tax thresholds and rising property values, many families are edging into Inheritance Tax territory without realising it.
What can people do now to prepare?
Natasha: We look at gifting, trusts, pension planning, and lifetime transfers - always aligned with your personal goals. Small changes today can make a big difference later.
What makes your advice approach different?
Simon: We make complex issues feel simple. It's about trust, long-term planning, and keeping the whole family's financial future in mind.
Want to make sure your loved ones benefit - not the taxman?
