Spring has sprung at Staves I am pleased to report that after the usual slow start to the market postChristmas and New Year, spring has started with a bang! For those of you that keep a healthy interest in the local property market, you will not have failed to notice that the number of new properties listed for sale has dramatically increased, as has the speed in which houses are selling. Here at Staves we have listed and sold more properties during March than we have in any previous March on record. On average we have carried out 16 viewings for every new property listed and received an average of 3 offers per property. Furthermore 89% of our sales agreed during March were for the asking price or above. Therefore if you are looking to sell your property during 2017, now would be a great time to do so. Now home to over 30 pieces of life fitness and hammer strength training equipment, recent additions include a power mill, squat rack, assisted pull up/dip machine and heavier training plates. “Through my own passion for exercise, I always wanted to open my own gym with a vision of providing quality health and fitness,” says JoAnne. Recently, Sian Woodcock has joined the existing team at the Mind & Body gym. With a BSc degree in Health Related Fitness, her vast amount of knowledge and techniques will help enhance the already excellent classes. “I want to promote the importance of an active lifestyle for overall health and wellbeing for people in the surrounding communities,” says Sian. Sian has gained awards in working with participants with disabilities in sports and leisure, teaching in the long life learning sector and is nearing the end of her training for a diploma in GP/exercise referral, adapting exercise for older adults along with

exercises for pre and post-natal women. The Mind & Body gym are also launching three new classes including booty camp, pre and post-natal and lifestyle over 55s group exercises classes. Booty camp is focused on increasing the strength in your hamstrings and glutes by incorporating various techniques. It is a great way to help improve posture, reduces loss of bone density and alleviate lower back, hip and knee pain amongst other things. Keeping gently active during and after pregnancy is important and that’s where the pre and post-natal classes come in. In an aerobics circuit style, the classes focus on low impact movements
that are all easy to follow – leaving you and your baby feeling refreshed. There is really no age limit on exercise and Mind & Body are launching an over 55s group exercise class, which will focus of five main areas – aerobic fitness, balance, muscular fitness, relaxation and flexibility. “Sessions are tailored to background and ability and could include light weights and stretch bands. We’ll constantly be checking everyone’s form and condition but we will 100 per cent be making sure people are smiling and having fun,” says Sian. The gym has a range of memberships starting from £17 per month along with a gold membership of £40 per month, which includes full use of all the facilities and classes along with personal training once a month and regular programme reviews. Some classes are also open to non-members at £5 per class. Island of plenty
WITH GREAT WEATHER, RESTAURANTS AND GOLF, IS MAJORCA THE IDEAL LONG WEEKEND DESTINATION? JOHN MURPHY REPORTS. f you’re in need of a little tonic after being battered by the winter elements in Britain then you could do worse than take a trip to beautiful Majorca. Only two-and-a-half hours away from Manchester, the largest of the Balearic islands is an ideal long weekend destination. With typical Mediterranean temperatures, ranging from 15-20ºC in the autumn and spring, shorts and t-shirts will keep you under the low-cost airline’s miserly baggage allowances. And there’s plenty to do. The island is famous for its beaches, scenic coastline, Serra de Tramuntana Mountains in the north, classical road cycling terrain and impressive golf courses. No trip to Majorca would be complete without a visit to the historic capital, Palma. Dominating the skyline and overlooking the shimmering Mediterranean harbour is the Gothic cathedral of Santa Maria. A vast and impressive building, inside and out, it is famed

for its altar canopy designed by the modern architect Anton Gaudi. Other notable landmarks include Alumudina, a Moorish-style Arab fortress which was converted to a royal residence and the medieval circular construction, Bellver Castle. Perhaps the most enjoyable element of the city is the long seafront promena0de. Take a stroll, avoiding runners and cyclists, and marvel at the vast cruise liners that battle
for berths and the gleaming multi-millionpound yachts gracing the harbour. Away from the promenade, streets in and around the old town are home to some of the finest bars, bodegas and restaurants in Spain. Open a huge wooden door on a street corner and find yourself in an Aladdin’s cave of a courtyard area with locals highlighted in the shafts of spring sun filtering through the vines and glinting on their glasses of local wine. Catalan influenced food stars in an array of fine restaurants. One of the best views of Palma is from the wonderful terrace at the Castillo Hotel Son Vida, part of The Luxury Collection. Perched high above the Bay of Palma the 13th century castle hotel is an opulent mix of old and new. From the moment you are greeted in the vast entrance hall to the moment you leave you are enveloped by a sense of calm luxury inspired by the high ceilings supported by

vast columns, exquisite antiques and stunning, classical paintings. The air of opulence is maintained with marble and grand wood panelling running throughout the castle, with the latter featuring heavily in the elegant Es Vi bodega bar and restaurant with its huge glass doors opening on to the long terrace which juts out towards the bay. Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas and Prince Rainier of Monaco have sipped their cocktails here while enjoying the same stunning views. The bedrooms are equally grand and spacious with fine furniture and fittings, many with balconies offering views over the golf course which snakes around the hotel and beyond to Palma itself. The hotel is an ideal base from which to
explore Palma and the island but it also offers many facilities itself. As well as a beauty spa, the hotel has four tennis courts and can arrange sailing, riding, water sports, hiking, cycling, and even paragliding and parachuting. One of the most popular activities is golf, with guests being able to play at the adjacent Arabella courses Son Vida, Son Muntaner, Son Quint and Son Quint pitch and putt. Conveniently a shuttle from the hotel will take you at no cost to each course. Son Vida is the oldest course on the island with narrow fairways winding around the estate of mature trees, lakes and shrubs. It’s a tough, tight championship course where accuracy, not length is the requirement. Son Muntaner is more open and accommodating for the average club golfer with wider fairways funnelling into well protected, sometimes elevated greens. The newly sown Bermuda grass has helped with better contacts on many of the holes. Son Quint, opened in 2007, is the youngest course on the island offering wide fairways, straightforward par 4s and stunning views of the Bay of Palma, way below. All three courses are great value for money with green fees ranging from 50-90 euros, with the hotel able to reserve your tee times.

MOSFEST ON THE MOVE THE MOSBROUGH MUSIC FESTIVAL HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE ITS EARLY DAYS AS A FUN CHARITY DAY AT THE LOCAL MINERS’ WELFARE CLUB. MOLLY McGREEVY DISCOVERS THE SECRET OF ITS SUCCESS. his year marks the eighth Mosborough Music Festival, and for the first time the event is being held in the city – at Don Valley Bowl – rather than out in the suburbs, and has been given a new name to mark the occasion. The Lightning Seeds, Cast and From the Jam will headline the festival, which has a belter of a line-up of Brit-Pop legends, local upcoming bands and tribute artists. We caught up with organiser Steve Cowen, who started the event in 2010 as a charity fundraiser and has seen Mosborough Music Festival grow into the Mosfest it’s become in 2017.

How did Mosborough Music Festival start?
It started out of tragedy really. One of my talented musician friends - Ched Thorley committed suicide, leaving a five-year-old son. So I decided to have a fun day at Mosborough Miners’ Welfare Club, we had some bands play and held a footy tournament. So many people turned up that it was suggested we do it every year. As it grew it got too much, and I couldn’t really cope with it whilst I was working. Then I was made redundant, so I set up my own professional events company in 2013. I’ve always done events and charity in my spare time, but nowt on the scale of what we’re doing now. Charity is a huge part of what you do, who are you supporting this year?
We’re supporting Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity this
year, we still keep charity aspect alive, and try to pick a local cause. We’ve raised more than £50,000 and I’m really proud of that. In previous years we’ve helped various charities including Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, St Luke’s Hospice and Roundabout. The most rewarding was raising money for Reece Winterbottom, who lost his mum and then was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of six. It was a personal one because the family live at Beighton, we managed to raise the money for him, his dad and two brothers to visit DisneyLand Florida for two weeks, with £2,000 spending money. Talk us through your line-up.

Mosborough can feel a million miles away, at Don Valley we’ve got easy transport links. We’ve teamed up with SuperTram and City Taxis to help get people back into the city after the festival. What else is new this year?
Is championing local music something you’re passionate about?
We know up and coming bands so try and give them a platform. Red Faces played last year, they’re now making a big noise in the music scene, Oddity Road are doing really well, we’ve got about six local bands on. You’ve moved venue because the land you normally use is being redeveloped, are you excited to bring Mosfest to Don Valley Bowl?
I’m a Mosborough lad, so I’m a bit gutted we’ve had to move, but it’s come at the right time because we’ve been selling out. Now we’ve opened it up to the rest of Sheffield,
For the first time we’ve got three stages. The two big stages are side by side, which means there will be continuous music, not like most festivals that have changeovers of 45 minutes. As soon as one band finishes another kicks in on the other stage. We’ve teamed up with The Leadmill for our after-party. You can get in free with your MosFest ticket or programme, should be a really good night. We’ve pushed the boat out with line-up this year, because of us moving, but we’ve not put ticket prices up. “This year we’re pleased to welcome exhibits from other supporting organisations, such as A Fire Appliance, Edale Mountain Rescue, the Institute of Advanced Motorists and Sheffield College Motor Vehicle Apprentices,” says joint organiser Roger Hart of Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club. The Lord Mayor will attend at 2pm on the Saturday to present certificates to all of the dealers and, as well as the many cars on display, there will also be family entertainment including a stilt walker and balloon modelling for little ones, and live demonstrations from the Sheffield College Motor Vehicle Apprentices. Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between seven charities, including the Rotary club’s own charity, which is used as a reserve to help people in need. Recently, the club sent Aquaboxes to Nepal and Italy, providing families and communities with water filters and emergency supplies. Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club meets on a Tuesday evening and has a new speaker each
week. Most of last year’s money, around £750 each, was donated to local Sheffield charities including Sheffield Young Carers, St Wilfrid’s Centre, Emmaus Sheffield, Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind and the Alzheimer’s Society. This year’s chosen charities include Grimm & Co, a thriving apothecary located in the heart of Rotherham which runs innovative storytelling and writing workshops for young people, St. Luke’s Hospice, Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, Fable (For A Better Life with Epilepsy) which helps fund Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy for children and adults as well as support, Neurocare, a hospital charity that is raising money for a ROSA Robot for the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to carry out brain surgery, and Edale Mountain Rescue, as well as Rotary Charities. Sheffield College (Hillsborough) has also played an active part in the advertising of this year’s Motor Show, creating an animated clip that will be showcased to the public closer to the event, and designing flyers.

Powered by a 789hp 6.5-litre V12, the 812 Superfast is the most powerful naturallyaspirated car the company has ever created. 062mph takes just 2.9 seconds, exactly the same time at the special edition F12tdf, with a top speed of over 211mph. As with the F12 and F12tdf, the 812 Superfast sends its power to the rear wheels only via a instantaneous seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Where the F12 was all about beautiful curves, the 812 uses sharp edged angles to make up its appearance. It’s certainly more aggressive looking. Pocket rocket The Audi RS3 is one of the most powerful hot hatchbacks in the world. With 362hp produced from its 2.5-litre five cylinder engine, coupled with four-wheel drive and a quick shifting DSG gearbox, it can sprint from rest to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds. Not exactly slow. Now though, Audi has upped the power stacks even higher – power for the Audi RS3 now weights in at 395hp, making it the most powerful hot hatchback on the planet. 0-62mph is reduced to 4.1 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155mph. Racing pedigree With the imminent arrival of this year’s F1 campaign, Aston Martin has unveiled its latest additions to the Vantage range; the V8 and V12 Vantage S Red Bull Racing Editions. t was all going so well… we were part of the tourist throng in central London on the last hot weekend of the year. After an early breakfast, Westminster Abbey and the National Portrait Gallery had been ticked off our ‘must visit’ list. The turning leaves told us autumn was on its way, but temperatures soared into the seventies and the dress code was short sleeves and sunscreen. The first sign of trouble was an innocuous little announcement of delays on some lines due to signal failures on the underground. Sod’s law dictated that every conceivable tube journey back to our hotel in Kensington and then on to St Pancras for our train home was suddenly running a drastically reduced service. Cue mild panic and instantly revised plans. Forget that last leisurely lunch; it was time to head back to the hotel, grab our bags and sweat it out one last time on the tube in the

hope we would not miss our connection. By the time we made it back to what had been the base for a fabulous city break, you could say we were hot and bothered, but a guardian angel was ready to come to our rescue. Enter the immaculately suited-and-booted Alessandro Convertino, manager of the Baglioni, a rather lovely Italian-owned-andstyled boutique hotel in a prime position opposite the entrance to Kensington Gardens. On hearing the reason for our rushed exit, Mr Convertino had a suggestion. The hotel had a snazzy Maserati car for the complimentary use of residents which had just left to drop a party off at Harrods but would be back in five minutes… would we like a lift to the train station? Well, there was only one answer. Panic over, calm was restored, and during our smooth journey across London in airconditioned luxury we could ponder at
leisure one simple fact… the Baglioni Hotel and all who work there are one class act. OK, so he only offered us a lift. Common courtesy, you might say. But this gesture of kindness was just typical of the attention to detail that made the base for our two-day stay a lot more than just a place to stash the bags and sleep. The Baglioni is all about understated luxury and overwhelming comfort. With dark wooden floors throughout and high ceilings there is a lovely sense of space at all times, and the chocolate and gold colour scheme gives the bar and lounge a delightfully relaxing feel. Service is friendly, understated but immaculate nonetheless. Our suite was the last word in modern comfort with a separate dressing room, a lounge with a sofa and chaise and writing desk, a bedroom with a king-sized bed and a spectacular bathroom of black mirrored granite. There was even a fancy Italian

cappuccino maker… I really should have learned how to use it. No matter, the coffee to accompany fresh-baked breakfast pastries was simply superb. Trust the Italians to appreciate the importance of a proper brew to kick-start the morning. Brunello Bar & Restaurant is the name given to the hotel’s chic, recently refurbished restaurant. It has won many plaudits in London as a stand-alone dining venue and the highlights from a menu inspired by traditional trattorias of the 1950s included ridiculously tender Wagyu beef, succulent lobster and the sharpest Amalfi lemon tart. Tempting though it was to linger in the hotel (and they have a gym and spa if you feel so inclined), we were in a prime spot for one of my favourite London pursuits… strolling. We enjoyed a blissful sunset walk in Kensington Gardens. Kensington Palace is just a few minutes away, and with the round pond, the Serpentine and Hyde Park’s stunning Italian gardens all close by, there is no better way to relax on a bright, sunny evening (even if the constant screech of the vivid green parakeets that have made these parks their home mean the atmosphere is never totally tranquil). Stepping out of the hotel there are also some fascinating sights to be found simple by walking in the connected suburbs of Kensington, Bayswater and Notting Hill. This is embassy territory, and tucked away along these picture perfect streets and crescents with their immaculate whitepainted houses we stumbled across the embassies of Ukraine, Moldova, Iraq, the Netherlands and Russia. Of course, even when you have based yourself in a hotel with a splendid restaurant, you still want to sample something of London’s restaurant scene. I’ve come a cropper over the years, mainly by breaking the golden rule of never eating in areas that are obviously attractive

almost exclusively to tourists. You’re only passing through; you might not even tip so why should they bother. Know the feeling? I guess you’ve also succumbed to the fatal hypnotic effect of Chinatown. But I love Chinese food and really wanted to sample the real thing, as eaten by Londoners. I found it on the opposite side of Kensington Gardens at the Royal China on Queensway in Bayswater. Dim sum has been popular here for decades and the queues start at breakfast time on Sundays. An unassuming entry off a busy shopping street gives way to the substantial Oriental dining room with gold-leaf ceiling, which was buzzing with a lively atmosphere. Here we dined handsomely on steamed dumplings of crab and spinach and prawn and coriander, spare ribs in black bean sauce, sesame prawn rolls, crispy fried squid balls and authentically wobbly cheung fun with peanut sauce. London pubs are pretty special too and again, if you just veer slightly off the tourist trail you will be rewarded with proper, unspoiled watering holes. To name just a few, the Goat on Kensington High Street is one of London’s oldest and is rarely quiet, while The Elgin in Notting Hill is slightly bohemian in feel. Hotel Van Dyk is supporting Cash for Kids The four-star Derbyshire hotel has recently unveiled Cash for Kids as its charity of the year for 2017. Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids is a grant giving charity that supports individual children, groups and children’s charities where children are sick, deprived and in need of extra support. The Van Dyk has previously supported its Mission Christmas 2016 campaign by donating the use of the venue for the campaign launch. The overall campaign went on to raise £1,276,400 which supported 24,248 local children. The hotel also donated tables on showtime party nights to the charity to raffle at their fundraising events. “Cash for Kids is a fantastic local charity and as a familyrun business we take great pride in supporting the local community.,” said Eleanor Stephenson, business development manager at Hotel Van Dyk. “We are very excited to get involved in their fundraising efforts to benefit local children.” The hotel is in the process of planning a fundraising campaign with ideas including a charity quiz night, Cash for Kids specials in the two restaurants, along with a charity ball in the beautiful ballroom. “I’m incredibly excited and grateful to be working with Hotel Van Dyk this year. Not only are they helping by their staff raising vital funds but are helping our charity raise awareness of the support we provide for sick and disadvantaged children across Derbyshire, Bassetlaw and South Yorkshire,” said Cash for Kids manager Allan Ogle. MISSING PARROT FOUND EATING BISCUITS AT TESCO A much-loved parrot that was blown off course by the wind has been found eating biscuits in Tesco car park. Charlie the blue-fronted Amazon parrot went missing from the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre at North Anston when she was flying in the centre’s bird display arena. After a plea to find the bird was posted on social media, the community came out in force and she was soon found in the car park at Tesco, Dinnington, snacking on some chocolate digestives. To celebrate Charlie's return and her 19th birthday the zookeepers are making her a special cake.
Places for People raises more than £5,000 for the British Heart Foundation Places for People Leisure Centres in Sheffield have announced that their partnership with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has raised £5,074 towards the fight for every heartbeat. Around 7 million people are currently living with cardiovascular disease in the UK and the funds raised will help support the BHF’s research into preventing and treating these devastating conditions. “We are so pleased to have raised so much money to support their vital work. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our employees, customers and suppliers in helping us make a real difference,” says Alex Greaves, contract manager.

Simon hits the heights for charity Simon Brown of Browns Family Jewellers has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease. Simon’s epic trek took him to Uhuru Peak at an energy-sapping 5,895m above sea level. “Thank you so much to everyone for supporting me. It was a great experience but the mountain sickness was very tough above 5,000 metres,” says Simon.
