As the green shoots of spring are popping through the ground, racing enthusiasts from across the country are getting ready to don their racewear for the official opening of the UK flat turf season. The Lincoln, which showcases world class racing in Doncaster, has a new sponsor for 2018. Online casino 32Red have partnered with Doncaster Racecourse to present the 32Red Lincoln. First past the post last year in the Heritage Handicap was Bravery, who made a fairytale start for North Yorkshire handler David O’Meara thanks to an inspired performance from jockey Danny Tudhope. The race, which take place on 24 March,
will get the flat season underway with eight months of racing and entertainment activities ahead. And after a day filled with racing and socialising, an evening of entertainment from The Fillers, the world’s greatest Killer’s tribute band, will see visitors singing along to classics including Mr Brightside, Run for Cover and Runaways. The gates open at 12noon and the racecourse will formally start the flat season at 13.50pm, with seven races throughout the afternoon. Abby Chandler, head of marketing from Doncaster Racecourse, said: “The 32Red Lincoln is a really exciting race for us as it gets the season underway in style. We are looking forward to welcoming racegoers back to Doncaster Racecourse for this event and we know that it will be a great day out.
“The flat season includes the popular William Hill St Leger Festival and this year’s Ladies Day will be followed by a performance from one of the UK’s best-loved pop stars, radio broadcaster, actor and DJ, Martin Kemp. “Early bird tickets for Ladies Day go on sale on 5 March until 31 May and with this year’s entertainment announced we suggest that you grab them while you can. Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) was formed in 2011 by a handful of independent Bawtry retailers, and since then, it has grown to have over 80 members, a chairperson, a vice chair and various sub-committees who work together to promote Bawtry to the local and wider community. Whilst membership is charged at £20 per month, the BRA remains a not-for-profit organisation, which has the interest of its members and the town at its heart. And as such, BRA works closely with Bawtry Town Council and the Bawtry Residents Group to represent members, raising the profile and reputation of Bawtry as a prestigious destination town, and host some of our muchloved events, including Bawtry Fashion Week and the Visit Bawtry Polo Cup. BRA also have a proactive social media presence, with over 11,500 followers – not to mention a website which provides a wealth of information for residents and visitors alike – and they have recently become members of Welcome to Yorkshire. As warmer weather beckons, we’re also preparing to spring into action, and the calendar of events kicks off with the annual Bawtry Fashion Week (BFW) from 4-11 March. Now in its sixth year, BFW is a real mecca for people who love fashion and enjoy the shopping and social scene that is associated with it. What’s more, although the Tour de Yorkshire doesn’t pass directly through Bawtry this year, riders will be gearing up to navigate through our neighbour village, Auckley as part of stage 1 on 3 May. Special mention must also go to Bawtry Hall, the latest exclusive venue for hire in Bawtry. It’s great to see the grade II listed building coming to life as Bawtry’s newest wedding venue.

aunched in 2013 by Bawtry Retail Association (BRA), the annual Bawtry Fashion Week, is packed full of events, offers and showcases as the town’s independent businesses support the popular initiative. The aim of the event is to promote the importance of shopping on the local high street and supporting the local economy, whilst also highlighting the array of top fashion brands available in the town. This year’s event will take place between Sunday 4 and Sunday 11 March and a glittering schedule is beginning to emerge as to what visitors can enjoy during that time. Brilliant brasserie Hannah Sanders enjoys a feast at a Bawtry favourite.
A
rriving at the popular Bawtry’s Bar and Brasserie on a chilly Thursday evening, we were ushered inside and instantly made to feel at home by the warm welcome of the staff. As we were led to our table which provided us with a panoramic view of the restaurant, I immediately fell in love with the décor. Stripped-back wooden tables, antler lightshades, wooden oars placed on the wall, an old-fashioned record player, a fire and feature bar perfectly tied together to create a rustic and contemporary feel. With so many tantalising dishes on the menu it was difficult to decide, so to tide us over we nibbled on olives and freshly baked bread with a balsamic and olive oil dip (£4.95) along with a Warner Edwards rhubarb gin served with a Fever Tree ginger ale tonic, garnished with fresh raspberries and blueberries (single £6.80) and a Coke (£3.50). To start my partner opted for the Thai fishcakes (£7.95) served on a bed of fresh greenery – delightfully crisp with the sweet chilli dip providing some subtle heat. I chose the
BBQ chicken wings (£7.95), which came piled high in a metal bucket. The chefs managed to get the skin delightfully crispy while keeping the chicken succulent – very moreish when paired with the sweet, tangy BBQ sauce. For mains, my partner went for the recommended surf and turf, choosing the 10oz sirloin steak (£24.95). The chefs didn’t a miss the mark when it came to cooking the steak, medium-well done, to perfection. The chilli king prawns were juicy and fresh with just the right amount of kick, however the star of the night was the brandy and peppercorn sauce (£3), which was rich and full of flavour. I went for the halloumi burger (£13.95) coated in a garlic and herb crumb with a tomato and chilli chutney, roasted peppers, chard leaf and served on a rustic, freshly baked bun. Both dishes came with a generous helping of home cut chips and salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar. For dessert, my partner satisfied his sweet tooth with a homemade warm chocolate brownie (£6.95), which was delightfully gooey, served with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with a salted caramel and chocolate sauce. I opted
for something lighter – the lemon tart (£5.95) and a double espresso (£2.25). The pastry was smooth with the tartness of the lemon being complemented by the fresh mint and strawberries – a refreshing end to the meal. Bawtry’s Bar and Brasserie is well known for its food, but it was not only the delicious dishes, but the attentive service and relaxing atmosphere that made this one of our favourite dining experiences. Plain sailing at The Ship Great food and a relaxed atmosphere makes for a great dining experience, writes Phoebe Seymour.
W
hile I enjoy dressing up for the occasional swanky restaurant, coaxing my partner into a shirt and something other than jeans and trainers is another story. That’s why I was relieved when I found out we were going to The Ship @ Bawtry – an honest, down-to-earth, British pub. With a warm welcome and living room-style décor – with quite a few models of ships, of course – you instantly feel right at home. Stained glass windows, classic pub patterned upholstered booths and dark wooden furniture gives The Ship a traditional look, while its forward-thinking menu includes a vegetarian board, as well as all the usual classics such as hearty meat dishes and pies. Being a veggie myself, I was surprisingly spoilt for choice. The Wallis family have been at the helm of The Ship for over a decade now. Originally run by Mandy and Dave Wallis, their son Chris took over in November 2015, bringing with him heaps of experience, having previously revived the Blacksmiths Arms at Everton. “Before we took The Ship over, it was a drinkers’ pub,” says Chris. “It was struggling to survive in a market where so many pubs were closing down and was in desperate need of a
new lease of life. We’ve since increased the food offering and created a more familyfriendly environment.” Though the focus is more firmly on their food offering, it’s still a great place to pop in for a pint too. There are always four guest cask ales available and the pub is a proud past winner of the CAMRA Pub of the Year award. However, there are some familiar lagers on tap as well. While perusing the many options on the blackboards, I had half a San Miguel (£2.25), while my driver had a Pepsi (£1.50). Homemade creamy garlic mushrooms (£4.95) with a hint of white wine for me and a tangy homemade tomato soup of the day (£3.95) for him, both served with warm crusty bread, made for a promising start. My partner loves a good steak, and it wasn’t long before he was mopping up the last few drops of peppercorn sauce with tender fillet medallions (£14.95) and golden brown scalloped potatoes. Meanwhile, I was tucking in to a colourful homemade vegetable curry (£9.95), packed full of juicy mushrooms, tomatoes and peppers and accompanied by a generous helping of rice and naan bread.
No pub meal would be complete without a Great British pudding, and my partner’s treacle sponge (£3.95) certainly fit the bill. I opted for an American-style wedge of caramel apple pie (£3.95) topped with a cool and creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream. And to highlight every element of Bawtry Hall’s unique appeal, each couple also enjoyed a personal tour of over 200 years of history, including baroque fireplaces, flowing staircases and an opulent white Tuscan front porch, embellished with crisp white hydrangeas. Bawtry resident and business founder will be sadly missed.
T
he founder of popular Doncaster designer fashion boutique Robinsons of Bawtry passed away peacefully on 19 February surrounded by his loved ones. Tony Robinson, 66, who lived in Bawtry, founded the boutique over 30 years ago and remained a popular, larger than life character in the market town where he could be seen enjoying a coffee and a chat. Russell Jones, current owner of Robinsons of Bawtry and lifelong friend, commented: “It is with much sadness that we had to say our goodbyes to Tony, many years earlier than
anyone hoped. It has always been, and will remain, an honour to carry on the legacy of his store and also the amazing fundraising work that he has done over the years through the Robinsons charity fashion show that he established.” Created by Tony, in memory of his first wife who died from cancer, the fashion show has raised over £350,000 since its inception over 25 years ago. Andy Longworth, friend and Bawtry business owner, commented: “Tony was a true friend; a gentleman who had a fantastic sense
of humour and a zest for life. It is an incredibly sad time and I shall miss him but will always look back fondly on the good times we had.” Tony was a well known figure in the fashion industry since having opened ‘43’ boutique in Doncaster in the ‘70’s before Robinsons of Bawtry and then Olivers in the Victoria Quarter in Leeds. Everyone is welcome to attend the service at 1pm at St Nicholas Parish Church, Bawtry on Friday 9 March followed by a celebration of his life afterwards at Ye Olde Bell Hotel, Barnby Moor.

The perfect venue LUXURIOUS, ROMANTIC ROSSINGTON HALL MAKES FOR A MEMORABLE WEDDING. ossington Hall celebrated a busy 2017
R which saw the luxury wedding and event venue turn into a 24/7 hotel. Now open every day for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, the Hall also has nine luxury bedrooms. An additional 11 bedrooms will be completed by this summer with plans for a further 20 bedrooms in the coming years. Whilst previously known mainly as an exclusive wedding venue, the Hall’s restaurants have gained a loyal following in the last year. Diners can now chose from Menu 1882, a more informal dining experience to that offered from the Library menu, for a quick meal during the week. Those wishing to book meeting or event space for a corporate function can benefit from free wifi, onsite parking and a variety of meeting rooms of differing sizes. Corporate rates are available for the bedrooms for those wishing to stay. Regular commuters along the Great North Road will have seen work being done to the Hall’s historic Gate House recently. The Gate House had fallen into a severe state of disrepair but work has been undertaken on a new roof, windows and doors over the winter months and new signage for the entrance purchased. The Gate House’s exciting future will be revealed soon!
‘We wanted our wedding to be classic and timeless and keep things as simple as possible to ensure the wedding was elegant. We chose the colour scheme of black, white, gold and dusty pink and felt these colours complimented one another. Rossington Hall is such a beautiful old building we did not feel we needed to decorate the venue to show off the character and age of the Hall. ‘We chose Rossington Hall as our wedding venue as we thought it would be perfect for a Christmassy winter wedding, and we were right! Ascetically the hall is grand and fantastic for photos but what really made our day special was the staff. Hannah and Laurie were an incredible help both setting up in the morning and running the day all the way through till the early hours. They really made sure our day went how we wanted and were a great support. The food was brilliant with all the guests commenting on standard and speed of service. The bar staff were friendly and helped us keep on top of our bar tab. The rooms were all amazing (especially the bridal suite!) and keep to a good standard of cleanliness. The Hall can be hired on an exclusive or nonexclusive arrangement and has hosted weddings from just eight people up to 150. The team pride themselves on being able to create a bespoke day for the bride and groom by not offering set packages, instead allowing the couple to create their dream day around their own budget. Each Wednesday between 5pm and 7pm the Hall is open for a Wedding Open Night - where the wedding team will be on hand to show you around and discuss any questions that you may have. It’s very informal, and a great opportunity to bring family and friends along for their opinion. Couples can also arrange private viewings if they prefer on any day of the week including evenings and weekends. BEST FOR GROWN-UP KIDS Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Swiss Chocolate Bunny 440g, £6 A grown-up take on a classic kid’s choice, this Easter treat from Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference range is a realistic twist on the usual cartoon-esque hollow bunny. This was such a work of art, it was a shame to behead it. But we were soon rewarded with smooth Swiss milk chocolate, which was easy to break up as it bent rather than snapped, therefore avoiding pesky crumbs – well, it would be a shame to waste any. CHARITY BALL TO HELP FUND CHILDREN’S HEART SURGERY A charity ball will be held to raise money for the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund which has helped so many children including local boy Freddie. Freddie from Doncaster was born with a very complex and severe heart condition. By six months old, he had already had three operations and is expected to need more in the future. The Little Hearts Charity Ball will be held on Saturday 21 April at the Keepmoat Stadium to raise funds for the surgery fund at Leeds General Infirmary. There are opportunities for businesses to sponsor tables and donate raffle/auction prizes to raise money for this lifesaving children’s charity, plus a few tables left if you would like to attend.
