Reading may help, but stop using a back-lit gadget such as a TV, smartphone or tablet an hour before bed. If you can’t resist looking at your phone last thing at night, check if your phone has a night shift setting (most of the newer iPhone and Android phones do).
Flip your mattress
Regularly flip your mattress to maintain its longevity and comfort. Many new mattresses claim to be non-flip, but it’s still best to rotate them, on average, every three months. Use your best judgment and if you feel a bit of a sag or can see one with the naked eye, it might be best to rotate your mattress more often. With retail, business and leisure at the forefront of the move, plans have been set in motion to show just how much the area has to offer. Here are just a few of Doncaster’s influential establishments that are helping to make the area a growing cultural boomtown, along with a number of developments to look forward to in 2017 and beyond.

PGA Golf Course The proposed 18-hole course will be ‘tournament level’ to encourage the best of the best to compete and is yet another win for the area’s budding sporting industry. The picturesque grounds of Rossington Hall will be repurposed to fit a professional, world-class course, along with a club house and luxury homes, too. Part of the European Tour, the site is set to reform Doncaster as the sporting capital of the region, cementing the town’s status as talent creators. It’s a move that coincides with the £56 million dual carriageway, linking the city to Robin Hood airport, driving yet more traffic to Doncaster’s increasingly busy streets. Dome restaurant quarter Dubbed the ‘Herten Triangle’ by locals, planning applications are currently being considered by Doncaster City Council with the aim of adding new restaurant franchises to the Lakeside retail park. Located between Asda and Vue cinema, the eight-unit building could potentially provide hundreds of jobs and increase footfall to the area. This, along with the Civic Quarter, could be another area packed to the brim with creative and leisure offerings.

£10m Doncaster town centre investment Major plans to transform Doncaster Town Centre are moving forward after the approval of £10 million of funding. The Sheffield City Region cash will be used to start work on Doncaster’s Urban Centre Masterplan and diggers have already started work. Demolishing the former Doncaster sorting office next to the railway station will provide improvements to the 'gateway' to the town. More than £3 million will also be used to transform the market area and the remaining £7 million will used to transform the station forecourt. The work in the market area will focus on the most iconic buildings, the Corn Exchange and the Wool Market, providing the ability to host more events and attract more people. The plans also include consolidating the current Irish Middle Market into the existing market hall building and using the space to extend the car park. Later in the year, work will begin on the frontage of the railway station and the car park, providing a welcoming arrival point for visitors. Mayor Ros Jones said: “When I launched the masterplan last November I said we needed a comprehensive and achievable plan that will make a real difference. Confirmation of this funding demonstrates that we have this in our masterplan document and shows Doncaster is definitely moving in the right direction. “It is extremely positive to see the masterplan coming to fruition so quickly and residents will soon start seeing the changes which will help Doncaster move forward and thrive. We will now be working closely with our partners and traders over the coming months to develop detailed plans with a view of starting work in the markets area towards the end of year.”

Case Study: Lyndsey and Paul Ashcroft When Lyndsey’s partner Paul popped the question, there was only one wedding venue that stood out from the crowd. aul asked me to marry him on what I thought was a girly trip to London in October 2013. Little did I know he was waiting on one knee when I arrived at the hotel. We began planning around two-and-ahalf years ago, so we could make sure everything was just perfect. We had looked around a few other places but nothing compared to The Crown Hotel. It ticked all the boxes and the staff were just so nice; they showed us around everything and made us feel welcome from the very beginning. When we arrived on the day, it was perfect from start to finish; they couldn’t have done any more for us. The style was rustic meets ‘the big city’ (in keeping with our engagement) – lots of cream, lace and fresh flowers and touches of rural textures, which complemented my lace, Justin Alexander dress and cathedral length veil. With the starlight backdrop, rustic

signage and ceiling and wall drapes, it looked absolutely beautiful – I received so many lovely comments. What our guests didn’t know, was that Paul and I had a few surprises up our sleeve. We had arranged for a vintage double decker bus to drive our guests from the church to the reception and had even designed a personalised cake, decorated with flowers on the front and my husband’s influence on the back – Sheffield Wednesday football club, Game of Thrones, Clash of Clans and a pub scene. We also hired the Warning Tones, who had everybody up on their feet dancing, and later on in the evening we had a photo booth and ‘pimp your own Prosecco’ table, complete with raspberries, blackberries and strawberries. All of our guests – 90 for the day and 120 for the evening reception – commented on how wonderful the food was. For the wedding breakfast, we had an absolutely phenomenal
four-course meal, comprising pork and liver terrine, salmon fillet wrapped in filo pastry and individual apple and blackberry crumbles topped with cream, followed by tea, coffee and cheeseboards. And when they brought out the finger buffet later in the evening – a medley of fajita-style chicken fillets, selection of handmade pizzas, mature cheddar and spring onion, honey roasted ham, tomato chutney and a selection of local pork pies – no-one could resist. The service we received from the Crown was truly out of this world – from planning the wedding to helping us on the day and looking after us once it was all over, they were absolutely brilliant. On behalf of Paul and me, I’d like to say a massive thank you to all of the staff for making our day so special. It was a five-star experience and I would absolutely recommend The Crown to anybody thinking of getting married.

Wedding Open Day The arrival of spring signals the start of the most exciting time in the social calendar – the wedding season. And The Crown Hotel in Bawtry were delighted to kick off in style by welcoming lots of newly engaged couples to their wedding opening day on 29 January. On arrival, guests were treated to a glass of fizz and a selection of canapes, before discussing the details of their big day with the Crown’s dedicated wedding co-ordinator. White Rose Occasions decorated the Hogarth (laid for a wedding breakfast) and Leger (laid for a civil ceremony) suites in a beautiful neutral theme, with white, creams and florals in abundance. Coupled with gorgeous ceiling drapes, twinkle lights and stunning table decorations, the rooms were transformed into wedding wonderlands. Also on hand was head chef Caz, who has been serving up delicious food from the Crown kitchen for more than 30 years. Not only was she able to discuss the finer details of each menu option, but new wedding breakfast dishes, including half melon filled with fresh berries, prosecco sorbet and fresh mint, and whipped goats cheese, beetroot, orange and balsamic salad, rosemary crostini, were exhibited in the latest Crown wedding brochure. They were all cooked and displayed exactly as they would be on the day so guests could envisage exactly how their wedding breakfast would be presented.
To highlight every element of the Crown’s unique appeal, each couple also enjoyed a personal tour of the hotel, including the beautiful secret landscaped garden, sumptuous bedrooms, The Vanilla Rooms hair salon and Elizabeth Ann Therapies, where couples chatted through the luxury wedding hair and beauty packages on offer. In addition to White Rose Occasions, many of the Crown’s recommended wedding suppliers were also in attendance, including Classic and Contemporary Cake Company, Celebrations of Bawtry, Time for Diamonds, Ella Mace Stationery, Amelia’s Sweetie Cart, Vibe Music and Jess Brett Live music. With so much to entice and enthral, it’s little wonder the hotel are already taking bookings for 2020 – though there are still dates available if you’re hoping to walk down the aisle sooner. s the days get longer and warmer weather beckons, we’re preparing to spring into action in Bawtry. Bawtry Retail Association will be hosting their annual Bawtry Fashion Week (7-11 March) with a fashion extravaganza which will see some amazing events and promotions. Bawtry’s Bar and Brasserie will also once again play host to the official After Show Party (Saturday 11 March, from 5.30pm), where everyone is welcome to join them for a complimentary glass of prosecco, canapes and live music by Adrian the saxophonist. For those who prefer the great outdoors, Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry are delighted to announce their sixth annual ‘Yorkshire Caravan Show’ (4-12 March). Held at the Doncaster Road site, the day is set to include the Trax FM roadshow, a face painter, reptile rendezvous and a host of demonstrations and family entertainment. Following a very successful series of ‘meet the artist visits’ in 2016, Limited 2 Art is proud to welcome another two highly acclaimed artists to its gallery. Giving collectors and art enthusiasts the chance to meet the artists and view their latest work. One of the world’s most collectable and successful living artists, Todd White will be visiting the gallery on the evening of 3 March, followed by leading contemporary artist Stephen Hanson on 11 March.

Putting on the style Bawtry is gearing up for its most exciting fashion event of the year …

awtry is a vibrant and glamorous destination for fashion throughout the year, but there is one annual event when the market town really shines – Bawtry Fashion Week (BFW) For the past four years, BFW has been celebrating the best fashion outlets of Bawtry with fantastic events taking place throughout the town. Founded in 2013 by the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA), the aim of the event is to promote the importance of shopping on the local high street and supporting the local economy. Ross Jarvie, chair of Bawtry Retail Association said: “Our annual fashion week gives all our retailers, not just those associated with fashion, the opportunity to work together and create a fantastic event that attracts visitors to the town from miles around.” Highlights from 2016 included a fashion show showcasing Joseph Ribkoff ’s latest collection, Bawtry Eye Academy showed off their fabulous collection of Walter &

Herbert frames, and Bawtry’s Bar and Brasserie rounded off the fun-filled week with a glitzy after-show party. Fashion and jewellery outlets will be getting in on the action too. ow that Christmas and New Year’s Eve are well and truly behind us and celebrations have been cast aside in favour of some much-needed healthier alternatives, the time has come to look ahead to the trends you will be wearing in 2017. Spring/summer collections from some of fashion’s biggest names have already arrived in store at Robinsons and these are the trends to shop for now.
Kitten heels A kitten heel is often considered fashion’s ultimate footwear faux-pas but nothing could be further from the truth for 2017. Our penchant for a lower heel gained momentum last year and the next take on the trend is this most ladylike of accessories, replacing last season’s loafers with just a hint of a heel. Avoid verging into twinset and pearl territory by styling yours with straight-leg denim, oversized sweaters and everso-slightly unruly hair.
METALLICS Gold lamé isn’t just for Christmas. AW16’s metallics are sticking around for the season ahead, only they’re migrating from the dance floor to the daytime. Brighten a dull month with some subtle shimmer, adding a chunky knit to balance out the glamour with just a hint of the ordinary. The silver pleated skirt has surprisingly become something of a wardrobe staple and the style more often reserved for festive soirees will keep you ahead of the curve when recycled with a black polo neck and block-heeled ankle boots.
Slogan t-shirts SS17 is the season to be outspoken in slogan T-shirts that let you put your point across without saying a single word. Last season’s logos, patches and embroidery have been replaced with wording that gets the message across loud and clear.
PINK Seeing the world through rose-tinted spectacles isn’t hard in 2017, with various sugary sweet shades of pink sweeping the rails. Fuchsia reigns supreme, with powder pink and raspberry bubble gum hues added for good measure.
Super-sized shoulders 2016 was all about baring your shoulders, but 2017 sees them covered up in the most statement of styles. Eighties-style power dressing makes a storming return for SS17, with puffed shoulders, sculptural sleeves and – dare we say it, even shoulder pads making a comeback to add some serious attitude to everything from dresses to outerwear.

RETAILERS LAUNCH LEGENDARY ST LEGER LADIES DAY Ladies Day at the St Leger Festival each September is one of the most iconic days in the Doncaster racing calendar, and this year, a new meeting in April will officially launch the event. Worst kept secret
The word is out... and with Sunday roasts as good as this, it’s little wonder, writes Rachel Martin.
W
hen you come across a really great pub you want to shout about it. Yet at the same time you also want to keep it to yourself, for fear it will get overrun. However it seems the secret is most definitely out at The Turnpike, Bawtry. The traditional Yorkshire pub has been around for a long time, but it is one that deserves not to be forgotten. In a town full of contemporary bars, cafes and grills, it offers an oasis of tradition with warm, welcoming service and a home-cooked roast just like mum used to make – more on that later. With a snug, blazing fire, exposed stonework, low ceilings and traditional wooden furniture, it’s exactly what you’d hope for in a cosy pub. But what The Turnpike does so well is strike the balance between old-fashioned touches and a modern, open-plan design. It doesn’t feel like a modern day gastro pub, but neither do you feel hemmed in by cramped seating and gloomy corners. When fine dining and rigid restaurants don’t quite cut the mustard, hearty pub grub is the order or the day, and, in search for comforting classics on a rainy Sunday afternoon (all washed down with a pint of real ale), the menu looked excellent: almost entirely
rustic, with a sense of distilled purity and, blissfully, nothing about sharing or small plates, just your time-honoured starters and mains. To start my partner ordered the cocklewarming root vegetable soup, and for me the garlic mushrooms, which disappeared among a volley of “hm-mmms” before I’d noticed it had arrived. The food here is cooked fresh, so they ask you to be patient while you wait, and though it does take a little time, it’s certainly worth it – both starters had us cooing with delight. Landlord Charlotte Bentham was at liberty to wander over while we awaited our mains – two traditional Sunday roasts with all the trimmings – and chat about how business was doing (very well, it turns out). First things first, you will not leave hungry. The portions are outstanding with plates piled high with meat, veg, Yorkshire puddings and, the critical test of any roast dinner, roast potatoes, which I’m thrilled to report were pleasingly crisp and fluffy. My partner’s beef was cooked to just pink (as requested) and my roast pork was teamed with perfectly crackly crackling. I can say with confidence that anybody looking for thoroughly accomplished, no-fangled British cooking will not be disappointed.
As a fan of traditional puds, I was thrilled to see treacle sponge and fresh custard on the dessert menu and my partner opted for the equally sweet chocolate brownie and ice cream. My sponge was every bit as nostalgic and comforting as I could have hoped for and the brownie was delicate – despite being absolutely packed with flavour – and delightfully gooey. When chef Daniel Head came out to send us on our way, face aglow at the end of a long service, he couldn’t have been friendlier: answering questions and singing the praises of his suppliers. He had that hospitable quality good chefs often have: that of taking pride in his work as a means to connect and communicate with people, to have them happier walking out of the place than they were when they walked in. We certainly were. It had even stopped raining. Sunday menu: one course £9.95, two courses £12.95, three courses £15.95. W
ith so many big-name chain opticians around, how does a small independent opticians in Bawtry manage to get shortlisted for the Family Optician Award at the National Opticians Awards? Sarah White, owner of Bawtry Eye Academy, believes it’s all down to their outstanding personal service. “It’s the personal touch,” she says. “We take more time with customers – and our customers enjoy spending time with us. We want everyone to leave happy. “Our customers range from ages two to 92. We encourage all children to get checked out to catch any problems early on and 25 per cent of our clients are children under 16. Going to the opticians can be scary for children so we make sure we are approachable and involve them – not just talking about them to their parents. “We regularly give out feedback forms and are constantly reacting to customer’s suggestions. There’s a real family feel here and even my eldest daughter helps out. We aim to make every customer’s experience a positive one.” Furthermore, their range of frames are not just your usual high street brands. As well as offering 15 different ranges of glasses for
children, they also offer quirky designer brands such as Öga for adults. However, if you are looking for well-known brands, there’s Ted Baker, Stark and Italian brand Vanni for men and Persol and Tiffany & Co, which is proving particularly popular, for women. But it’s not just their fantastic choice of frames and brilliant service that make them stand out. “We offer a lot of services other opticians don’t,” adds Sarah. “We have a wide range of contact lenses and offer visual dyslexia testing.” Though Bawtry Eye Academy only opened in June 2013, Sarah has been qualified for more than 25 years, whilst Sanjiv Sethi has been an optometrist for 30 years. Accompanied by an equally experienced and passionate assistant manager, Helen Wallace, the team are well placed to give customers the best service in Bawtry and beyond. A trip to the opticians is uneventful for most, but for some, it’s life-changing experiences. “What I love most about
my job is making people happy,” says Sarah. “The other day there was a boy who came in with his parents, who had just adopted him and were taking him for his first eye appointment. “He’d never had glasses before and when he put some on, his face was a picture. He then turned and said`: ‘You’re my mum!’.” And this isn’t the only way the business is making a difference to its community. Plans are well underway for the Doncaster Tour De Yorkshire ProAM Ride, a pair of charity cycle rides as part of the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire festival.

International flavour GUESTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD JOIN THE ROTARY CLUB OF ROTHERHAM FOR ITS ANNUAL DINNER. he Rotary Club of Rotherham staged their 96th annual dinner at the Carlton Park Hotel. Mayor of Rotherham Cllr Lyndsay Pitchley and her consort, Alex Armitage, were present along with the governor of Rotary District 1220, Colin Gell, and his wife, Ani. The dinner had a number of guests from far-flung parts of the globe with the response on behalf of the guests given by Scott Chapman, from Seattle, who attended with his wife Trilce, who is from Lima in Peru. There was a guest from Thailand and the president's cousin Kiera, with husband Daniel, travelled from Cologne. Representing the Rotary Club of Doncaster was David Allen with his wife Shelagh. At the reception guests were entertained by piper Ed Arnold and, after the draw and an auction, Liverpudlian comedian Jamie Sutherland kept the room laughing with his

A shining example of Lee and his team’s creativity is Rioja’s patatas bravas – a traditional Spanish staple of potatoes with a tomato sauce. Being such a traditional Spanish dish, the patatas bravas is part and parcel of the Rioja Tapas Special (£26.95), a set menu of sorts, which myself and my companion opted for. Mixed breads to start followed by four tapas dishes and the patatas bravas. Again, mixed breads are not an unusual starter, but it was the local rapeseed oil with red wine reduction that put Rioja’s offering above the rest. Sweet and gloopy in consistency, it complemented Rioja’s handcrafted olive and garlic and herb butters perfectly.
Having to whittle our choices down to just four tapas dishes soon became the hardest decision of the evening – Rioja’s new menu features new and revised dishes plus some customer favourites. Unable to choose from the fabulous selection of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes, we opted for five plates, rather than the usual four. From Rioja’s latest selection, it was the Duck and Butternut Squash Spring Rolls (£6.25) and the Pea and Broad Bean, Rocket and Parmesan Fritter (£5.45). Initially wary of the unusual flavour combination, the duck and the squash were a beautiful pair, the meat neither fatty nor greasy. Alongside the vividly pink Beetroot and Feta Falafel (£5.45), the fritter was the most vibrant dish of the night, a deep green in colour with the fresh taste to match. Making a triumphant return in the Spicy Chorizo (£5.95) was the red wine reduction – coating the chorizo in a sweet, sticky sauce. Our final choice, and the restaurant’s most popular dish, was the Halloumi Fries (£4.95). Simple, cheesy and the perfect accompaniment to any other item on Rioja’s menu. Although not a condiment to any of our chosen dishes, intrigue led us to ordering a sample of Rioja’s grapefruit mayonnaise – usually found alongside the Crispy Calamari (£5.05). Citrusy and refreshing, the rare,
delicious flavours once again showcased Lee’s team’s skill for making ordinary dishes extraordinary. For dessert, it was the traditional Spanish Bunuelos that caught my companion’s eye, whilst I chose the Chocolate Brownie (£3.65) from Rioja’s ever-changing selection of cakes. Soft on the inside, crispy and sugary on the outside, the Bunuelos were simply divine dunked in the rich, chocolate sauce they sat beside. With such a high calibre of food and service, Rioja may be a newbie now, but as a reputation for exciting, delicious meals prepared with thought and skill grows, it won’t be long before Rioja becomes a firm favourite in the Eastside region. Lakeside Village helps Doncaster to get healthy! A leading retail outlet in Doncaster has joined forces with Hallcross Medical Services to help improve the health of the local community. Lakeside Village has announced that it is the latest venue for Doncaster residents to access a free NHS health check which will take place at the centre on the first Friday of every month. Provided by Hallcross Medical Services, the NHS Health Check is an important step for many people towards improving their health and becoming more aware of what they can do to lead a healthier life. Since July last year over 17,000 people from Doncaster have already benefited from it. The NHS Health Check, which can help lower people’s risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of dementia, is available to both eligible staff and visitors and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.
