NOT ALL DOMESTIC ABUSE IS PHYSICAL THE EMOTIONAL INJURIES CAN BE JUST AS DAMAGING

www.jonessolicitors.co.uk

Many people are subjected to a form of domestic abuse which makes their lives a misery without their partner being physically violent to them. This type of emotional abuse is also known as coercive controlling behaviour. The abuser will use subtle ways to control and monitor their partner’s day to day life, perhaps by demanding to know where they are at all times and who they are talking to; insisting on looking at their mobile phone; checking the mileage on their car etc. It can also take the form of more sinister behaviour which completely undermines the other person’s self-confidence, making them feel stupid and worthless and constantly afraid to do or say anything which might upset their partner. Very often abusers work hard to isolate their victim from family or other people who could support them, and tell them that no-one would believe them if they were to try and get help. In some cases the victim is denied access to bank accounts and feels completely reliant on their abuser.

The good news is that both the police and the Family Courts now recognise this type of abuse for what it is and can act to protect victims and their families. The abuser can face criminal charges, and if you are suffering from this or any other form of abuse, your solicitor can act to protect you by applying for a Non-Molestation order and if necessary, an Occupation Order requiring the abuser to move out of the family home. Legal Aid is still available for this type of case, subject to financial assessment, and once the court makes an order against an abusive partner, it is then possible to apply for further legal aid to deal with divorce and finances too. Best room in the house EXTEND YOUR HOME WITH A NEW CONSERVATORY OR ORANGERY FROM EYG. onservatories and orangeries have undergone a very modern makeover Conservatories and orangeries are in high demand by home owners who are looking to add a room to their property that is affordable. Now, more and more homes are choosing to extend with a conservatory, and modern technology has meant that today’s conservatories and orangeries are a world away from the old draughty designs, which were too cold in winter and boiling in summer months. With new materials, better insulation, and roofs that are either fully or part-tiled, modern conservatories and orangeries are now useable all year round. Add pelmet lighting, roof lights, electric windows, mood lighting, or even underfloor heating, to make your conservatory the best room in the house. Nick Ward, Managing Director at Yorkshirebased home improvement firm EYG, said conservatories and orangeries are seeing a surge in sales as home owners choose to invest in their homes by expanding them rather than moving house. He said: “Orangeries and conservatories offer a home extension at a fraction of the cost

C

8 Eastside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

and build time, compared to a traditional brick-built extension. We are seeing a huge surge in popularity with our new generation of conservatories that are warm in winter and cool in summer, no different to any other room in your home. “Our customers are using them as sun rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, kitchens, play rooms, or home offices. Because they’re useable all year round, they’ve become an integral part of the home, and there are so many bespoke features you can add to personalise the room and add touches of luxury.” EYG has a range of roof options, from fully tiled, lantern glass room, Rooflite, and Hybrid – which is alternate glass and solid panels that

still let light flood in. Conservatories and orangeries come in a variety of materials, colours, and designs, and customers can create their own bespoke design. Solid roofs can also be fitted onto existing conservatories to upgrade them and give you all the benefits of a new generation conservatory while keeping costs down. Mr Ward added: “Upgrading old conservatories with a new solid or Hybrid roof is a great option for people who have an old conservatory which does not maintain a comfortable temperature. Adding a new roof also transforms the look and appeal of the room.” EYG is one of the UK’s leading windows, door and conservatory manufacturers, founded in 1970. The firm has just opened a new Conservatory Village at Walkers Garden Centre in Doncaster, where customers can now go along and view orangeries and conservatories and speak to the sales team. At Walkers, customers can see our new Cappella Orangery, an orangery with a hybrid roof, and a bespoke conservatory in anthracite grey UPVC.

The art of the possible FROM TRANSFORMING A BEAUTIFUL BUILDING TO ORGANISING A HUMAN CHAIN THROUGH BAWTRY, GALLERY OWNER RUTH WORSMAN IS UP TO THE CHALLENGE. t’s an overcast Sunday morning in Bawtry and more than 70 people have gathered in the streets. They stand patiently in line from The Courtyard to the Market Place, all within touching distance. A flash of colour appears at The Courtyard and moves along the line of people, passed carefully from to the next. Another flash of colour follows, followed by a third and fourth until more than a hundred have been transported. No, this isn’t a strange, ancient ritual, but a human chain, organised by Limited 2 Art Gallery owner Ruth Worsman to help move artwork to the gallery’s beautiful new premises in Bawtry’s Market Place. It’s a big day for Ruth, the gallery’s new home is more than four times the size of its predecessor, and sits in one of Bawtry’s most iconic buildings. With the move, Limited 2 Art has become one of the biggest, independent art galleries in the North. Limited 2 Art has come a long way since it moved into The Courtyard in 2004. After spending their first few years trading in a building site, the recession hit in 2008, leaving the business bruised but fighting. With the help of its loyal customers the gallery survived, and business has been booming ever since. The Old Town Hall building was built in 1890 and has been home to many different

I

businesses including a car showroom and a working men’s club. Most recently it had been Bawtry Flowers and Plants, and in 2016 Ruth finally got the keys and the transformation in to Limited 2 Art began. And thanks to the work of Ruth and her designer David Bowling, the inside of the Old Town Hall is unrecognisable. “David took all my ideas and creativity and made it possible. He added the finishing touches and gave it the wow factor.” Said Ruth. “We have taken an old building and put a new one inside, everything inside is new.” Together the pair have created a stunning space to display Limited 2 Art’s collections, including a private viewing room, bespoke framing room and a mezzanine level to create more space for displaying artwork. Ruth has already received huge acclaim from both the art world and her loyal customers who have visited the gallery. She said: “An art publisher who has been in the business 30 years was overwhelmed by the beauty of the place, he said he would place it in the top 20 independent art galleries in the country.” As well as movers and shakers from the art world, the best of Bawtry have been flocking

to the new gallery. Ten paintings have been sold to links in the human chain, the fabulous art caught people’s attention as they passed it along, and on the second day of trading the man who made the gallery’s new signage popped in to buy a sculpture. Although she says the extra space has taken some getting used to, Ruth has settled into her new gallery well: “It’s perfect for a gallery, the Courtyard gallery was more bijoux and small, we had outgrown our space there, this is the perfect space for us.” She said. And more space means room for a viewing room, a lifelong ambition for Ruth, she said: “I’ve always dreamed of having a viewing room to show off art in a private setting” The room has specialist lighting which showcases the art at its very best, or that can be adjusted so the art can be interpreted and appreciated in a different light.

The extra space also allows for Limited 2 Art to expand its bespoke framing service, which now has its own dedicated room, and the addition of a stock room means customers have even more choice available to them. It’s not only customers that will benefit from the gallery’s upgrade, with more space to entertain Limited 2 Art will host more visiting artists, and Ruth plans to host a bi-annual competition for the region’s amateur artists, starting in 2017. The gallery’s inaugural show on Saturday 3 September 2016 will be by Kerry Darlington, who has previously shown work at The Courtyard, but is yet to see the new premises. For Ruth, the aim is to have a new visiting artist every four to six weeks, transforming Limited 2 Art into a destination gallery for artists and art-lovers alike, and putting Bawtry on the art world’s map. There are still some finishing touches to be

added to the gallery, its regular artists are helping to decorate the stairs with original pieces of art. Each has been sent a board to paint, and once installed, customers will be able to see a new piece of art with every step up to the mezzanine level. Sophisticated new premises and future plans aside, Ruth’s ethos for Limited 2 Art remains simple, she said: “This new gallery is about providing more beautiful art for people’s beautiful homes.” It may be Limited by name, but not by nature, and the gallery is set to flourish in its fabulous new setting.

The girls helped me pick the shoes and bag and, as I was trying it all on, the hat was delivered to the shop – it was obviously meant to be!” Not only does the lady wearing the dress win, but the boutique that sells the victorious dress will win the coveted Eastside Best Boutique 2016 award. Not only are their staff friendly and their clothes beautiful, but if you wear one of their outfits to St Leger you could be Eastside’s Best Dressed Lady 2016.

“We will definitely come back. Service was great. Food was fresh and flavoursome. I loved the decor and the place felt bright and airy. I see great potential for this restaurant and hopefully given time it may just be "the place to go" in Doncaster.” Lilly Le, Doncaster. “Brilliant night. The food was delicious. Had fillet steak with peppercorn sauce - absolutely amazing - most delicious steak to be found in Doncaster. Had the red velvet cake for dessert and my other half had strawberry cheesecake, both were delicious. The bar staff (Sophie and Ellie) were brilliant and made us feel so welcome. Special thanks to them for a lovely night out one of the main reasons we will be returning.” Rebecca Bower, Doncaster. “My partner and I had the pleasure of eating at Crab & Moo to celebrate our anniversary. We were delighted with the warm welcome and the attentiveness of John and his staff. The new menu provides a wide range of choices to suit everyone's appetite. John insisted we try the Triple Chocolate Flake Cake and it was easily one of the best desserts we've ever had. The portion sizes were perfect – generous without making you feel greedy – and the quality and presentation of every dish was exquisite.” Andrew and Phoebe, Doncaster.

FEVER!

NOTHING SAYS SUMMER MORE THAN MUSIC IN THE OPEN AIR – AND TFEST IS BACK TO GET TICKHILL ROCKIN’ IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. ant to avoid extortionate big-name festivals in far away, muddy fields? It seems every town and city is creating their own urban music playgrounds Sheffield has Tramlines and Tickhill has TFest! Now in the year of the third festival, Saturday 17 September will see Tickhill Cricket Club and The Scarborough Arms rocked with another stellar line-up of accomplished, crowd pulling professionals, plus exciting up-and-coming performers from across Doncaster and South Yorkshire. “Since the first festival in 2013, TFest has continued to be the talking point of the town, not just in Tickhill but throughout Doncaster and the surrounding areas, says co-organiser Steve Madin. “We’ve condensed all our great acts into two venues bringing everyone together for a much bigger and better festival experience.” Huge headliner acts include Simon Cowell’s all-time favourite Britain’s Got Talent act, Signature, now known as the world’s number one Michael Jackson tribute, South Yorkshires Bang Bang Romeo, bringing their unique brand of 60's influenced rock ‘n’ roll back to Yorkshire after winning widespread critical acclaim at the Isle Of Wight Festival, and aspiring Little Mix tribute act, Little Mix Experience.

There will also be performances by wellknown local acts including Sheffield indie rock ‘n’ roll band Adelphi, Doncaster’s Ginger Tom and rock/hip-hop act Kid 85. Following the success of 2013 and 2015, the event has prompted some brilliant local artists to return to the festival, whilst a surge of new artists and bands have been approaching the organisers. Over 300 acts have applied to perform at this year’s festival, and it is not just the performers that are eager to attend. An estimated 3,500 people turned out for the last event, and this year looks to be even more popular. So what is it that locals and visitors alike love about TFest?

MUSIC

“It’s a big thing for the community. The festival brings people to Tickhill who wouldn’t usually come here so it really keeps our economy and the town alive.” says co-organiser Simon Stringer. “There’s a unique atmosphere here that attracts people of all ages.” There will be a number of caterers attending the festival including fresh food marquees and a real ale tavern for the grown-ups, along with entertainment for the kids, including face-painting, a bungee jump, zorb balls and inflatables. Festival goers are encouraged to bring along their own chairs and blankets, but the festival does employ a strict no food or drink policy - so leave your picnic baskets at home and sink your teeth into all that TFest has to offer. And whilst a lot of festivals mean leaving the kids at a play area while the parents hit the stages, joint organiser Jennifer Hall is uber passionate about ensuring TFest is an experience to be enjoyed by the whole family. “I want to bring the thrill of live music to people who may not experience it in other ways. We want to give children a platform to see live music and feel inspired to pick up an instrument and play.” She says. TFest is very much an event hosted by the community for the community. Steve runs two Tickhill-based hairdressing businesses, SJ Grooming and Stephen Jon, Simon, who is the marketing director of a Doncaster-based business, grew up in Tickhill and Jennifer is a long standing member of the local business community, owning and running Feast sandwich shop in Bawtry for over 10 years. Having also worked as an event organiser for more than 15 years, alongside charities including Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Cancer Research UK, Jennifer has worked tirelessly to ensure TFest creates a safe environment for everyone attending. “I want to create a safe environment for

families and teens to be in, and we work hard with our bar teams and the police to manage the environment and actively promote challenge 21, to discourage underage drinking. TFest is a very safe environment with a huge focus on families.” Says Jennifer. This year’s official programme, designed by Simon, costs £2 and a huge fraction of the money made will be donated to local charity partner The Eve Merton Dreams Trust. The Eve Merton Dreams Trust was set up in 2011 by Martin Lawrence and Clynton Johnson, and is a non-profit organisation that donates the money it raises to help create a dream for terminally or seriously ill cancer patients in the Doncaster area. “We are delighted to announce that TFest have chosen The Eve Merton Dreams Trust as their charity partner for 2016. We’re thrilled to be working together to raise funds and vital exposure, and I hope that the people of Doncaster will get behind The Eve Merton Dreams Trust and help us help those that need it the most in our local area.” Says Clynton Johnson, Co. Founder, Dreams and Operations Director. The Eve Merton Dreams Trust will also have a marquee at the festival where people can help raise funds. “We wanted to give something back and are delighted to have the opportunity to raise funds for such a worthy cause. The Eve Merton Dreams Trust provides invaluable support for terminally or seriously ill cancer patients and their families in Doncaster, and we can’t wait to hear from the charity about the dreams our festival will help to fund.” says Steve. “Simon, Jennifer and I are proud to promote so many talented local businesses and acts and to be creating a real buzz. Why step out of this area when there are so many amazing acts on our doorstep?”]

Bravo for Roccos MEDITERRANEAN WEATHER, CLASSIC ITALIAN FOOD – WHAT ELSE COULD YOU ASK FOR? RICHARD ABBEY ENJOYS LA DOLCE VITA IN TICKHILL. ith temperatures topping 30 degrees, a group of lycra-clad cyclists slowing my journey through the sundrenched countryside and the prospect of evening dinner outside, you could be forgiven for thinking that I’d stepped out of my front door into the Med. While that would have been lovely, I was in fact in Doncaster, well Tickhill to be precise. Roccos Italian Kitchen occupies perhaps one of the best spots in town, a south-facing courtyard that was buzzing when we arrived in the early evening (having finally left the cyclists behind). It’s a beautiful spot – and a real selling point for the well-loved trattoria. Although sorely tempted to make the most of dining al fresco, we decided to take a booth within the air-conditioned interior. What can I say? It was too hot. I’m British – you know how we like to moan about the weather! – and I like to be comfortable when I eat instead of squinting, sweating and complaining about my Peroni getting warm. There. The inside of Roccos is very nice too with lots of warming browns and creams offset by cool lighting and windows that open out onto the courtyard. It’s stylish without being overfussy, which pretty much rings true with

W

the food too. There’s plenty to choose from with a good number of starters, pizzas, pastas, risottos and meat dishes to tempt, while the wine list, unless you know what you’re looking for, may require a little nudge in the right direction. A glass of L’Aristocratico pinot grigio (£5.15) was a good choice and the perfect accompaniment for what was to come. Starters of arancini (£7.25) and capesante alle nocciole (£12.25) offered different perspectives. My goat’s cheese stuffed-arancini had that rustic, gutsy flavour you’d expect from Italian food while the capesante (scallops) demonstrated skill, not just in pairing flavours – apple, celeriac, hazelnut on this occasion – but with the presentation too. For mains I had a real hankering for a steak and the filleto di manzo (£25.95) here was as good as you’ll find; charred and caramelised on the outside, medium-rare in the middle and dripping in a tasty garlic butter sauce. Simple but delicious. After raving about the scallops there was yet more shellfish across the table, this time in the form of linguine gamberetti indiavolati (£12.25). The pasta was al dente, the prawns were plentiful but it was the flavours of chilli, garlic and lemon that really stood out, giving

the dish a delightfully fresh flavour. Desserts came recommended by our waiter and good choices they were too. Raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake (£5.95) was wonderfully light, perfect for a summer’s evening, while the tiramisu was just that little bit more indulgent and had all the hallmarks of the Italian classic – chocolate, coffee, cream – delicious. A macchiato (£1.80) rounded off proceedings. The courtyard – which was still buzzing as we finished our meal – may be a huge selling point for Roccos but to be fair, the food’s all you need, whatever the weather. I was sold. It’s all go at theYorkshire Ice Cream Farm IT’S BEEN A LABOUR OF LOVE FOR OWNERS EDWARD AND REBECCA STOREY, BUT ALL THE HARD WORK IS PAYING OFF he Yorkshire Ice Cream Farm based at Sunnybank Gardens on the A614 near Hatfield Woodhouse, is soon to celebrate its second anniversary in the production of handmade ice-cream. Entrepreneurial duo, Edward and Rebecca Storey have worked in the artisan food business for many years, setting up a handmade chocolate shop in Guernsey, frequenting county shows and fairs up and down the country selling toffee and fudge and then opening a successful coffee and ice-cream shop in Doncaster. When they decided to move purely into the ice-cream business, the pair spent years searching for a suitable premises and eventually in 2014 bought Sunnybank Garden Centre. The Storeys have also secured planning for a new tearoom/restaurant and farm shop, and are in the process of planning to build a barn to accommodate an indoor all weather play area, seating and plant sales. “The move to Sunnybank has far exceeded our wildest expectations”, says Rebecca. “We envisaged a 10-year plan to get where we wanted to be with the business and hopefully subject to planning and my husband working 20 hours a day – we should do this in three years. “It hasn’t been easy moving here by any means, we are working seven days a week and undertaking just about all the work ourselves. The site was very run down and needed a lot

of up-dating. It’s really never ending, however we are loving every single minute of it. “When we walk the dogs around the nineacre site on a night, we can’t believe it’s ours –until I catch my reflection and spot the wrinkles and grey hairs of course!” Aside from homemade ice-cream, Sunnybank has a whole lot more to offer. There’s a fabulous tearoom offering homemade daily specials and beautiful home-baked cakes; a crazy golf course; an inflatable castle and slide; a free woodland children’s play area; ping-pong tables; a fantastic array of locally grown bedding, basket, alpine and perennial plants; and last, but not least, a brilliant secure caravan storage site, offering great value and second-to-none security for your caravans, accessible seven days a week. Sunnybank are also now offering children’s party packages, starting at £10 per head and hire of Our Betty – a vintage ice-cream bike suitable for weddings, parties, christenings, corporate events and shows. EATING OUT

A sarnie celebration RACHEL MARTIN GETS MESSY AT THE CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY COFFEE STOP. t a time when our food scene is a festival of pretention, The Classic and Contemporary Coffee Stop, Bawtry is a victory for all those who like to get messy when they eat. We arrive on a Thursday afternoon greeted by a wooden-panelled café at Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry - ready to soak up the best of the British sunshine with a sarnie and a well-earned pot of English tea (£1.85). Keeping it simple, the Bawtry café boasts sandwiches and paninis designed to be meals in themselves. They are large. They are cheap - at around £7 a pop. They are modestly complex. And they are very messy to eat. According to café owner Simon, “if you don’t get your hands dirty, you’re not doing it right”, an ethos welcomed by myself and my companion. Simon is not just the boss, but part of the scene. If you want a quiet meal, he won’t get in your way, but if you want a chat and a laugh, you’ll get one. Simplicity in menus is a virtue loved by customers, smart chefs and restaurant managers alike. And it is clear from the get go that the team at The Classic and Contemporary Coffee Stop are hell-bent on celebrating the delights of the humble British sandwich. My companion - a fellow lover of

A

minimalism - orders the ham and mature Cheddar panini (£7.15) and I settle on the roast beef, blue cheese and fried onion panini (£7.45) - I was unintentionally thankful that I arrived with a packet of extra strong mints in my purse. Though in the midst of a lunchtime rush, both paninis appeared promptly - toasted on the outside and crisp against the paleness of the cheese - teeming with decidedly British fillings. Accompanied by a generous portion of side salad, hand cooked crisps and homemade coleslaw. A note to those thinking of dining: there’s no need to fill up on breakfast before your arrival. Individually each element was excellent. The contrast between the fried onion and juicy beef was unexpectedly terrific - an immediate front-runner for the title of Bawtry’s best panini. If such an award exists. Dessert was a giant slice of Sonya’s Cherry Bakewell (£3.45) baked fresh that morning, but the magic ingredient was Sonya herself, bringing it to the table. The cake was a joy, except that we were so full we had to box up the half we couldn’t devour and re-visit it later that evening. The café’s décor is endearingly and artlessly simplistic. Keeping it minimal – with lots of comfortable seating - in an unpretentious location where the prices can be kept low.

The key ingredient at The Classic and Contemporary Coffee Shop is the staff, who are readily on hand to welcome you with a smile and some friendly conversation, no matter how busy the café. And it may sit slightly off the beaten track, but is teeming with visitors from opening through to close. Boasting great food, good drink, and prices so low you could get properly full for around £15 per head – there’s plenty to love here. You’ll certainly leave happy. And messy. Opening Times: Mon - Sat - 9am - 5:00pm, Sun - 10am - 4:00pm The Classic and Contemporary Coffee Stop Great North Rd, Bawtry, Tel: 01302 711 900 www.bestcakes.co.uk/coffee-stop

Food, glorious food IF IT’S HEARTY, TRADITIONAL PUB GRUB YOU ARE AFTER, THEN IT’S DEFINITELY ALL ABOARD THE SHIP, WRITES MOLLY McGREEVY. n the days of gastropubs, wooden boards instead of plates and minimalist décor, the hearty pub grub and homely atmosphere at The Ship at Bawtry hark back to the glory days of pub food. And glory is not in short supply at The Ship, the pub’s entrance is decorated with awards. They were the first winners of the Best Pub award at the inaugural Eastside Restaurant Awards in 2013, are proud owners of a plethora of accolades from CAMRA, and more recently were awarded Pub Restaurant of the Year by Marston’s. The pub has been ran by the Wallis family for almost a decade. It was under the charge of Mandy and Dave Wallis until November 2015, but has now been taken over by their son Chris, who is no stranger to running award-winning pubs. Before taking the helm at The Ship he ran the Blacksmiths Arms at Everton. There are decisions aplenty to be made when dining at The Ship, thanks to their incredibly extensive menu of meat, fish and

vegetarian options, as well as specials and proper puds to end the meal on. Having perused the various menus options are displayed on chalkboards on the pub’s walls, rather than at tables - I settled on breaded brie wedges (£4.95) to start, whilst my companion chose the tempura battered king prawns (£4.95). Our starters arrived promptly and beautifully presented, the two, large brie wedges were coated in light breadcrumbs, allowing the flavour of the melted cheese to shine through. The wedges came with a sweet, fruity Cumberland sauce which complemented the tangy brie incredibly well. The prawns looked beautiful and contemporary on the plate, and were garnished with a balsamic glaze, my companion praised them as some of the best prawns she has ever had. They keep things simple at The Ship, mains come with the customer’s choice of potatoes, salad or peas, or for a little extra your meal comes with a selection of fresh vegetables. To accompany my Mediterranean vegetable

frittata (£8.95) I chose the chips and peas, whilst my companion opted for the fresh vegetables - a generous portion of courgettes, red cabbage and carrots – to go with her pan fried salmon fillet. (£9.95) As our desserts arrived the pub was filling up for quiz night, a popular Thursday night event. My companion’s homemade white chocolate and Twix cheesecake (£3.95) was sweet and delicious, and enough for two to share. My almond tart (£3.95) was a lighter dish, and a pleasant, pudding to end on. As we left The Ship quiz night was in full flow, a proper pub game, for a homely, traditional pub. The Ship at Bawtry, Gainsborough Rd, Doncaster DN10 6HT, Tel: 01302 710129

Catch the Bawtry buzz BAWTRY COMES ALIVE ON SUMMER EVENINGS AND ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO SAMPLE THE ATMOSPHERE IS BAWTRY’S BAR AND BRASSERIE, SAYS STEPHANIE BURNS. recently had the pleasure of introducing a friend to Bawtry. Though she’d heard lots about the town, she’d never actually been and was dying to see what all the fuss was about. I couldn’t have picked a more perfect evening to show her just what makes this place so special. We arrived at 8pm on a warm Friday evening, and the buzz from people spilling out onto the street from the various pubs and bars to catch the last of the day’s warmth was infectious. It’s on gorgeous summer evenings like this that I think Bawtry shines its brightest. As we reached our destination for the evening - Bawtry’s Bar & Brasserie - the buzz continued, with a packed bar of groups and couples starting their weekend in style. Even before we took a seat, the scrubbed wooden tables, antler chandeliers, and a mismatch of decorations - an old gramophone in the corner, two oars criss-crossed on the walls, chests as tables - all set against a backdrop of dark grey walls with candles flickering in storm lanterns, made the atmosphere incredibly inviting. Bawtry’s shares a building with Coleman’s Steakhouse and Pizzeria - they both opened

at the same time last year and have made great contributions to the town - and they both serve the Coleman’s menu. After great starters of Thai fishcakes (£6.50), packed with chunks of fish and prawns and joined by a sticky sweet chilli dip, and five huge salt and pepper chicken wings (£6.25) spiked with an extra kick courtesy of red chilli, jalepenos, onions and shards of garlic, we put the establishment’s namesakes to the test. Pizza is something you often only appreciate when you shun the supermarkets and takeaways and allow yourself to indulge in the real deal – a proper stone-baked version with a freshly made base and spread liberally with high quality ingredients. Coleman’s/Bawtry’s have clearly done their homework; a beautifully crisp base was matched brilliantly by a generous topping of goats cheese, red onion marmalade, wilted spinach and garlic oil (£9.95) and had my dining companion in raptures. Could the other eponymous dish match this calibre? Absolutely. The 7oz fillet steak (£17.95) was one of the juiciest, tastiest, most tender steaks I’ve had, with a char-grilled outer that sliced like butter and gave way to a perfectly cooked medium-rare centre. I don’t know

how they manage to make it so full of flavour but, whatever they’re doing, I’m a fan. The accompany chips and onion rings were excellent, too. Portions aren’t small but do try to leave room for dessert. Sticky toffee pudding and Snickers cheesecake (both £4.50 and served with zingy raspberry ripple ice cream) were perhaps more indulgent puds than we really needed but they were definitely worth a little extra greed. While Bawtry’s and Coleman’s don’t serve particularly fancy food, what they do, they do incredibly well. I’ll be dreaming about that steak for a long time to come and my friend is already asking when we can schedule in a return visit to her new favourite town. The big prize awaits... DO YOU WANT TO BE IN THE RUNNING FOR THE 2016 EASTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS? FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN MAKE YOUR MARK... he search is on for the finest dining establishments across the Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts region, as we launch the 2016 Eastside Restaurant Awards. This glamorous black tie event, staged at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry on Monday 10 October, gives a huge boost to the local restaurant scene as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. Now the search is on again to find the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food in a superlative setting. Eastside’s reviewers will be out and about over the next few months, checking out established and new restaurants, seeking out the very best the region has to offer. All our recent award winners have been exceptional, so expectations are high. Meanwhile here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2016, contact Eastside’s publishing manager Terri Moore at terri.moore@rmcmedia.co.uk

T

Join our Judging Panel We want to give Eastside readers a voice on the independent judging panel that decides the ultimate prize – the Eastside Restaurant of the Year. The search is on to find one reader to join with our other judges, all chosen for their knowledge of food and their passion for dining out on the Eastside scene, to eat together at some of the region’s finest restaurants before deciding which venue should be named as Eastside’s Restaurant of the Year. You can leave your credit cards at home; all we want is your opinions. And you will need to clear your diary for a few dates later this year when we bring the judges together to dine out and make their choices. Does this opportunity tickle your tastebuds? To apply for a place on our judging panel, please email the editor, Chris Wilson, at chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk and tell him in no more than 150 words what qualities you think the judges should be looking out for in the search for Eastside’s Restaurant of the Year.

CAST YOUR VOTE We will always give Eastside readers their say in our Restaurant Awards. They are a discerning bunch who travel the region to experience the best restaurants, bistros and gastro pubs. That is why the Eastside Readers’ Choice trophy is so highly prized. The Eastside Readers’ Choice Award cuts across all boundaries. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a muchloved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered into a draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant. Voting is free: simply visit our website – www.rmcmedia.co.uk – and click on ‘Competitions’ to let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details, any multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified.

Thrilling spectacle

IT WAS ANOTHER GREAT OCCASION AT THE VISIT BAWTRY POLO CUP, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR, AS OVER 1,000 SPECTATORS ENJOYED FOOD, DRINK AND FIERCE COMPETITION. ow in its fifth year, the Visit Bawtry Polo Cup has fast become one of the most highly anticipated, as well as one of the biggest fundraising events in the area. This year, it raised over £5,000 for local charity Aurora, taking the total to over £25,000 since its inception in 2011. Eight teams battled it out at the Vale of York Polo Club Misson on Sunday 3 July 2016. Each team was sponsored and entered by members of the Bawtry Retail Association. Old favourites the Crown Hotel, China Rose, Robinsons of Bawtry, Fine & Country, and The Vanilla Rooms, along with new sponsors Deluxe Hair & Beauty Lounge (formerly Lash & Nail Boutique), Origin Broadband and The Glow Company all took to the pitch to do battle as guests watched from the side-lines with picnics, or from the comfort of the Robinsons Champagne Marquee. “Our Visit Bawtry Polo Cup has become one of the biggest polo events in the North of England and we welcomed over 1,000 spectators this year,” said Russell Jones, event organiser and proprietor of Robinsons. “Warmest congratulations go the China Rose team who have taken part each year

N

and this year managed to claim the winner’s cup.” China Rose played new team The Glow Company in the final, the latter of which was a particularly fine achievement as its team patron, James Cameron, had never played polo until a few months ago. Estelle Johnston from China Rose, who watched with her family, said: “Our team were fantastic and I am so proud of Megan Kershaw, our patron, for guiding the team to victory. We are already looking forward to next year when we will try and retain our position on the winner’s podium!” Spectators were also kept fed and watered with a range of food and drink options to suit everyone. The Pizza Guy served wood-fired pizzas from his Land Rover Defender complete with in-built oven, whilst Jaysters served up a delicious hog roast and barbecue. Thaymers provided luxury dairy ice creams for dessert, along with a selection of fudge and a chocolate fountain by Laura’s Fudge, whilst the Cheese Cave Deli of Bawtry took the stress out of picnics with their ready-made hampers, which came with a choice of wine or prosecco – the perfect accompaniment to a quintessentially British summertime event.

Aurora supports local men, women and their families, who are living with a cancer diagnosis. From wellbeing classes and working with Macmillan Cancer Support to holistic and beauty treatments, the Aurora team are there for people at a time when they need it the most. Emma McKay of Aurora Wellbeing Centres commented: “Once again, we had a fabulous day at the Visit Bawtry Polo Cup and the weather was fantastic. We would like to thank Bawtry Retail Association and Robinsons who make this a very special date on the Doncaster calendar happen and also everyone who attended to support the event and our charity. Thanks also go to the Bawtry Air Cadets who were truly brilliant and a great help on the day.” The Bawtry Retail Association is a member organisation that is dedicated to working with the town’s retailers including designer clothing boutiques, art galleries, gift shops, home accessories stores and specialist food outlets to promote Bawtry as a retail and social destination. GASTRIC BAND VERSUS HYPNOTHERAPY GASTRIC BAND: LIZ FROM ELIZABETH ANN THERAPIES EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENCES. f you need to lose more than a stone in weight, you may well want to know the answer to one key question: what is the difference between gastric band surgery and gastric band hypnotherapy? They are both designed to portion off part of your stomach: one is an actual operation, carrying the usual risks of infections and side effects, while the other is a virtual gastric band surgery hypnosis session whereby you are in a state of hypnosis and your unconscious mind thinks it has had the actual surgery. This, of course, carries no harmful side effects or risks of infection. Gastric band surgery has a 70 per cent success rate and costs thousands of pounds. The gastric band hypnosis programme has an 80 per cent success rate and costs hundreds of pounds. The gastric band hypnotherapy programme also helps to improve your relationship with food so your eating habits are improved and any unhelpful thinking patterns are addressed, such as emotional eating, cravings and many more issues. The gastric band surgery is also only available to people healthy enough to have an operation, whereas the gastric band hypnotherapy programme is available to people who are not. Having read the above, only you can decide which is the best alternative.

I used to be very fit and even belonged to a football club. I've now stopped going as I just can’t keep up, and just feel like completely giving up. Inside view FIND OUT WHAT LIFE IS REALLY LIKE ON CAMPUS WITH A VISIT TO QUEEN ETHERLBURGA’S. ou wouldn’t buy a car without going for a test drive or even consider putting an offer in for a house before having two viewings, so spending some time at a potential school for your child is absolutely crucial to get the feel that it is the right place. Open days are a great chance to see the school when all systems are go. It is a way to see all the departments and facilities and to talk to students and staff to find out exactly what life is like on campus. Queen Ethelburga’s is an independent, day and boarding school at Thorpe Underwood near York. It is set in a 220-acre estate and surrounded by simply beautiful North Yorkshire countryside its facilities really do have to be seen to be believed. The Sports Village is a huge complex complete with a 125 state-of-the-art station fitness suite, which puts most public gyms to shame. There are dance studios, a boxing gym, martial arts room, cycle studio, indoor courts, a table tennis arena and an aqua centre which has infinity trainers, a pool, spectator areas, sauna, steam room and jacuzzis. Sport of a different kind is available at Muggles, the students’ recreational centre and café. “Open days are a great chance to see the school when all systems are go. Find out exactly what life is like.” is an extensive gaming area, DVD library, karaoke, DJ and instrument area and a 3D cinema for the latest releases. No expense has been spared in providing pupils with a similar calibre of facilities in the classroom. A science complex provides the perfect area to pursue the subjects, Home Economics has its own cookery school, the Business Department is impressive with designated work areas and board rooms and there’s an extensive art and fashion department with a complete photographic studio and pottery kilns. With both QE College and The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s named as the top two schools in the North of England, and both in the country’s top 20, according to the Daily Telegraph’s Independent Schools’ League

Table from A*/A A-Level and equivalent results in 2015, you can’t ignore the fact that QE now offers a world class education. The majority of Year 13 leavers go on to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, including Oxford and Cambridge and those belonging to the Russell and former 1994 group. The ethos of assessing every student individually and finding out what he or she enjoys or is good at, gives pupils the basis and confidence to pursue subjects at which they are successful. The Queen Ethelburga’s motto is “to be the best that I can with the gifts that I have” – with the next Open Day on Saturday 1 October – perhaps that’s a date for the diary to find out exactly how they achieve that. Call 01423 333330 for more information.

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £30m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.qesportsvillage.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 80% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 40% of the fees

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

QE £30m Sports Village Elite Sports Academy Awards worth upto £7,000 Day or boarding, upto 100%. Membership costs of Elite Sports Academies for: Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball, Rugby, Swimming.
