Stick to a schedule

Regulate your body’s clock by sticking to the same bedtime every night. Although it’s tempting to stay up later and have a lie in at the weekend, try to keep to the same times as this can throw you out of sync when Monday morning rolls around.

Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual

You are more likely to sleep if you calm yourself down before getting into bed. Try deep breathing to slow down your heart rate or a herbal tea containing valerian roots, camomile and lavender. You could also try spraying lavender on your pillow or putting lavender oil on your pulse points.

Avoid sugar and caffeine

It’s fine to have a cup of coffee to prepare you for the day ahead, but it’s believed that having caffeine after 3pm can disturb your sleep patterns. Sugar can be just as detrimental, so try to cut down and don’t have sugary foods later in the day.

Switch off

Reading may help, but stop using a back-lit gadget such as a TV, smartphone or tablet an hour before bed. If you can’t resist looking at your phone last thing at night, check if your phone has a night shift setting (most of the newer iPhone and Android phones do).

Choose a comfortable bed

It can be difficult to know what to look for when testing out a bed in a showroom. If you have back problems, make sure you choose a firmer mattress.

Foam mattresses are often recommended for this and come in different levels of firmness. Ask a member of the sales team for help if you are unsure.

Flip your mattress

Regularly flip your mattress to maintain its longevity and comfort. Many new mattresses claim to be non-flip, but it’s still best to rotate them, on average, every three months. Use your best judgment and if you feel a bit of a sag or can see one with the naked eye, it might be best to rotate your mattress more often. Remember: if your mattress is over 10 years old, it’s time for a new one.

The celebrations will continue as local dance acts and performers such as The Torn and Gainsborough Ukulele Strummers will also join in the fun as they set to put on an amazing show across the weekend. Food lovers will be in for a treat as they will have the chance to sample some local dishes created by some of the region’s restaurants.

The Marshall’s Yard kitchen will be joined by the centre’s very own chefs from Root, Cream and Prezzo, alongside chefs from NYC Bar and Grill, Adam’s Bay, Vincere Hospitality and The Clock House. Demonstrations will start from 11am giving shoppers a chance to pick up some tips and recipe ideas.

The event will also see a special birthday balloon release by all those celebrating a 10th birthday or anniversary this year to join in the Yard’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

Whites of Old Cantley Farming for five generations, the White family have been growing oilseed rape on their farm since the late 1970s.

In June 2016, the company produced their first batch of coldpressed, extra virgin rapeseed oil that was harvested themselves.

What is special about their method, is that all the rapeseed is dried using solar power.

ANOTHER BAWTRY FASHION WEEK HIT BRINGS VISITORS TO TOWN. ow in its fifth year, the annual Bawtry Fashion Week has once again proved a huge hit with visitor numbers to the town soaring during the event.

Retailers hosted fashion events and promotions, with ladies fashion boutique Yasmine of Bawtry’s Joseph Ribkoff Fashion Show seeing over 80 ladies view the latest collections for the season. And, for the first time, the newly relocated art gallery, Limited 2 Art hosted and offered the perfect back drop for the inaugural VIVA fashion show with owner Ruth taking to the catwalk.

The Crown Hotel created a delicious BFW fizz cocktail, with sales recorded at well over a hundred, and a BFW Facebook competition to win prizes over £220 was won by Mark Galsworthy of Bawtry. It was presented to him at the after show party which was held at Bawtry Bar and Brasserie – a celebration of another hugely successful week.

Finger-licking fun RIBS, WINGS AND FAJITAS... HANNAH SANDERS ENJOYS GETTING HER HANDS DIRTY AT RELISH, DONCASTER. ith its modern exterior, tasteful décor and private booths, Relish is the ideal place for a weekend meal in the heart of Doncaster – especially if you are a fan of steaks and barbecue sauce like us.

Arriving at 2.30pm on a Saturday afternoon, we ushered ourselves inside the spacious restaurant and were surprised to be greeted by a busy restaurant, full of chatter and tempting aromas.

We were greeted and seated in a private booth with green leather seats, which was perfect for relaxing – after much deliberation – with a Tom Collins (£6.75) while my partner opted for a large Coke (£1.90).

Even with an extensive menu choice, the standards when it comes to quality of the food and attentive service are reassuringly excellent.

For starters I opted for the fried chicken wings (£5.90), which came with a side of BBQ or piri-piri sauce, along with sour cream. The chefs managed to get the skin delightfully crispy while keeping the chicken

succulent and moist. My partner went for the BBQ pork ribs (£6.50), which melted in the mouth and were coated in Relish’s own dry rub mix, lathered in a sweet, tangy BBQ sauce and served with a side of coleslaw.

For mains, I chose to stay with the fingerfood and went with the Relish fajitas (£12.90) along with an Old Jamaican Ginger drink (£1.90). Served with both beef and chicken, seasoned with fajita spices and an array of peppers and onions it gave off just enough heat for it to be thoroughly enjoyable.

The flour tortillas came in their own personal box with a side of salsa, guacamole and sour cream – if you like a bit of fun with your meal, this is the one for you.

My partner went for the sirloin steak (£18.90) with a creamy peppercorn sauce (£2). The chefs didn’t miss a mark when it came to cooking the steak, which was cooked to medium-well done perfection. However the winner of the night was the peppercorn sauce, which was rich and full of flavour.

Homemade desserts proved impossible to

resist. I had the sticky toffee pudding (£5.50) along with an espresso (£1.80). The pudding was doused in a rum caramel, which had soaked into the sponge, giving you a subtle taste of alcohol with every bite. My partner chose the baked vanilla cheesecake (£5.50), served with a seasonal fruit compote which was rich and sweet – the perfect ending to our afternoon meal.

A surefire bet RACHEL MARTIN IS ONTO A WINNER AT THE OLD WEIGHING ROOM. day out at the races is a real treat: a glamorous slice of escapism where you can swan about in your Sunday best splashing your cash on pampered thoroughbreds. But winning (and losing) money can also make you extremely hungry, so it’s always wise to factor in a pit-stop – or better yet – a top-notch lunch for sustenance.

Anyone who frequents the races knows the jockeys’ weighing room is the heart of the racecourse: the inner sanctum, the place where the public are prohibited from going.

But at Doncaster Racecourse it has been transformed, by means of a £125,000 refurbishment, into a glamorous champagne bar and restaurant, steeped in history and the glory of winners’ past.

With the original scales remaining onsite, the architectural design features from the 1920s have been well preserved, and, as we enjoyed a panoramic view of the racecourse from the terrace, pre-dinner drinks in hand, we took a moment to bask in the early spring sunshine and old-worldly surroundings before being invited to our table.

We were given plenty of time to digest our complimentary bread selection before our starters arrived. For my partner, this was the

soup of the day – seasonal root vegetables topped with spring onion, which proved both rich and luxuriously creamy. I had a seasonal goat’s cheese salad with carpaccio of pickled beetroot, caramelised walnuts and honey mustard dressing. Each ingredient had its own unique taste, but they married together extremely well – the sweetness of the beetroot working particularity well with the strong taste of the cheese, which had perfectly melted inside its coating.

For mains, my partner plumped for the roast Yorkshire beef with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and red wine gravy – the latter a subtle but unmistakeable thread through the whole hearty dish which had plenty of flavour. My roast leg of Yorkshire lamb was slow-cooked until tender and served with roasted vegetables, savoy cabbage, creamed potato, cauliflower and broccoli cheese. Like the surroundings, each dish was elegant in presentation and decadent in portion size.

For dessert I had the espresso crème brulee with pistachio and brandy snap crisps – creamy but not too sweet. My partner made short work of his dark chocolate and honeycomb mousse, topped with port-

poached fruits and chocolate tuille. The latter adding another dimension to the overall taste – both just sweet enough to round off an excellent afternoon.

A trip to Doncaster Racecourse may leave you a little poorer (we had no luck on the horses), but if you dine at The Old Weighing Room you will certainly leave rich with gastronomic satisfaction.

DONCASTER LITTLE THEATRE LTD Barbara Upton is company secretary, young lit director and adult director at Doncaster Little Theatre Ltd, where she has been a member for 20 years.

“As a trustee/director I am tasked with completing the legal requirements of Companies House and the Charities Commission and as artistic director I take responsibility for our youth group, running weekly drama workshops. I also act, when time allows, and direct adult plays.

“We produce at least nine adult shows per year and three children’s shows, but we also encourage others to hire the theatre and in the last two years have been able to welcome a variety of bands, solo performers and theatre groups.

“We also run a Friday afternoon cabaret show, helping older members of our community enjoy the live theatre experience, and we support Phantom Cinema, which is a community project allowing people to see cult films.”

Looking ahead, she says: “We have already completed part of our business plan, which was to make the theatre building more appealing, but some parts of the building have not changed since it was renovated 22 years ago. We plan to refurbish the public toilets and install a shower in one of the dressing rooms, as well as replace the auditorium doors. We will be seeking funding to help us complete this current plan.”

One to remember The Cirque Du Soleil has been on Terri Moore’s bucket list for a while and when she saw it was coming to tour the UK with their show Varekai, she had to go and see it at the First Direct Arena, Leeds.

“The Cirque Du Soleil did not disappoint,” says Terri. “From start to finish my eyes were glued to the stage, trying to watch everything that was going on kept you mesmerised. I can honestly say this was one of the best things I have ever seen and one of the best nights out of my life.

Sing-a-long for the time of your life The producers of sing-a-long-Frozen and sing-a-long-Rocky Horror Picture Show return to Cast with the brand new sing-a-long screening of the classic 1987 film Dirty Dancing on 6 May. This time around, it’s the summer of 1963, it’s college boys versus dancing hunks, it’s one of the best loved movies of all time and, yes, and there is a guy as great as your dad.

Join Baby and Johnny in a fun-filled screening of the dance classic where the audience is the star of the show. A host will lead a vocal warm up, show the audience how to use a free interactive prop bag and have everyone dancing really dirty.

Poetry, painting and pictures… South Yorkshire talent will be in the frame at Frenchgate as the shopping centre is creating a new cultural exhibition space for Doncaster.

Selected work by local artists and poets will be showcased to visitors in the busy thoroughfare connecting the shopping centre to the town’s train station – which will become ‘The Art Space at Frenchgate’.

A poetry exhibition, titled ‘These poets, our kin / These poems, our stories’ will be hosted in The Art Space and curated by Dan Ryder, a Doncaster-based poet, editor and social media manager at Doncopolitan magazine.

The new Art Space and poetry exhibition are both set to open by the end of March.

2nd Annual Charity Golf Day in support of Age UK Rotherham Rotherham Golf Club will play host to Age UK Rotherham’s second Charity Golf Day, following on the success of last year’s event, which raised over £4,000.

After a warm up at the club practice ground, golfers will enjoy 18 holes and the occasional stop off at the halfway hut, with on the course prizes to be won on the day, coupled with nearest to the pin and beat the pro challenges.

Golfers and their teams will be able to register from 11.30am in the reception area of the clubhouse. A hot bacon sandwich and drinks will be served upon arrival in the Fullerton Room, followed by a prompt shotgun start at 12.30pm.

After an exhilarating round everyone will be invited to regroup and socialise prior to a twocourse dinner being served in the Jack Hulley lounge. A charity raffle/auction will then follow.

The Phoenix Players in a previous production

The Phoenix Players Rotherham drama group, The Phoenix Players have just begun rehearsals for Steptoe & Son, which will premiere at the town’s Civic in May. Phoenix will be performing three of the best episodes from the 1972 series: Oh What a Beautiful Mourning, Divided We Stand and A Star is Born.

The show’s director, Tracey Briggs said: “It is a rather poignant time in that Alan Simpson, one of the original TV shows writers, died recently, just as we held a casting session. We certainly intend to do his work justice, it is still so funny and appeals to all generations.”
