Layer your space

Maximalism isn’t about clutter and clashing tones - it’s about carefully curating elements you love and things that make you happy.

Begin with your favourite tones (yes, that can include neutrals), add plenty of tactile texture and pattern and layer up your lighting.

Then introduce pieces that intrigue, surprise and delight - from statement lamps and gallery walls to pops of colour, like TikTok’s “unexpected red*” trend, where a single touch of red is used to add extra vibrancy to a room.

*This works with any bright colour.

Dial back your colour palette

Sticking to just a few main colours (maybe three or four) avoids overwhelm -maximalist guru Abigail Ahern calls this her “magic formula”.

Instead, play with saturation levels, using different tones of the same shade to create interest through your space.

Don’t forget the biophilia

Touches of nature lift maximalist spaces to a whole other level.

Begin by maximising daylight, using and create light plays across your walls. Choose natural fabrics and materials for extra tactility and cosiness, and of lush greenery -planting will help you introduce dramatic form where you need it and balance and soften where you don’t!

4Eyes Bakery has enjoyed the best possible start having been voted ‘Britain’s Best Loaf 2024’ for their garlic and rosmeary focaccia. The focaccia took the top honour ahead of over 180 other loaves and also scooped the prize for the ‘International’ category.

“I’m utterly proud and privileged to go up against so many talented guys” said Tom. “To walk away with the trophy... I’m just absolutely speechless”

4Eyes Patisserie was created by Matt and Stuart just over seven years ago,

“I trained as a chef and worked in a number of kitchens but always struggled to get good quality pastries and cakes,” said Matt. “That’s when I had the idea of producing these ourselves and selling them wholesale. We’ve grown from there.”

Tom joined 4Eyes in September 2021, bringing with him many years working in supermarket bakeries as well as for Dobbies and Bakewell Bakery. Far from the mass-produced loaves you generally handmade, artisan bread.

But to ensure that the many cafes, restaurants and hotels can enjoy the smell of freshly-baked bread every morning, it means working what many of us would consider unsociable hours. Tom’s working day starts at 12am to make sure everything is cooked fresh and ready for the drivers who depart at 3am. All deliveries are completed by 9am so when those cafes,

doors or dining rooms, you can enjoy that wonderful aroma.

“Moving to the new premises has enabled us to develop the bakery side of the business,” said Tom. “We now offer a sixday delivery service for all our products.”

4Eyes now employ 18 staff and the next step is to expand their services further

Leeds restaurant Tharavadu marks a milestone anniversary this month.

hen Tharavadu opened in Leeds in June 2014 it was very much a founding partners. Its South Indian cuisine was very different from what customers have come to expect from Indian restaurants over the years – there’s no chicken tikka masala, no jalfrezi and no naan breads. But the team needn’t have worried, they were busy from the get-go and this month celebrate their tenth anniversary.

Siby Jose, Prakash Mendonca, Ajith Kumar, Rajesh Nair and Manoharan Gopal pride themselves on being very much a team, with each bringing something different to the business, whether that’s in the kitchen or front of house.

It’s a formula that clearly works and has led to the Mill Hill restaurant winning all manner of accolades over the years. This includes recommendations in the Michelin and Harden’s Restaurant Guides, consistent ratings as one of the Top 10 Indian restaurants in the UK as well as being considered on of the Top 100 restaurants in the country by Square Meal. Most recently, chef Ajith Kumar was voted Chef of the

Year 2024 at the Oliver Awards, which recognises the best restaurants in Leeds.

And as for the future, they haven’t ruled out opening a second restaurant but have set their sights on Manchester to complement the already burgeoning Leeds restaurant. But in the meantime, keep enjoying this gem in the heart of Leeds.

It’s written by BAFTA Award winning writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran (who wrote TV hits including Birds of a Feather and the stage hit Dreamboats and Petticoats) and directed by the award-winning Mark Bell.

Championing sustainability, a new Harrogate boutique offers preloved designer and high street clothing and accessories at discounted prices.

Offering customers a sustainable alternative to brand new clothing, Cat Stanford and Kate Watts have set up Preloved Chic at Windsor House on Cornwall Road in Harrogate.

The boutique opened in April and stocks preloved designer and more unusual and unique high street clothes and accessories.

Everything that they sell is preloved with most of it never worn and still with the original tags.

Cat has over 30 years in the fashion industry and has a wealth of knowledge and experience. She has worked in the preloved market for the past four years and decided she needed a base to take the business to the next level. Kate was one of her original customers and suggested that they went into business together.

Having researched the possibilities for a premises in the centre of Harrogate and talking to their very loyal client base, they decided that being on the high street was not the right place for the boutique.

The girls decided it was paramount to give their customers a personal and more private shopping experience – with plenty of character and ample free parking,

“Harrogate lacked a place where ladies can come and shop for amazing pieces at greatly discounted prices,” said Cat. “At Preloved Chic you can buy a Stella McCartney jacket for less than a third of the original price and a beautiful dress from Zara. Sustainability and recycling is huge now and we felt that we needed to offer this to the ladies of Harrogate and surrounding areas.”

Garments range from high-end jeans such as Paige and AGolde, priced at £60, to dresses for the races by designers

such as Victoria Beckham, Rixo and Ulla Johnson from only £120. The stock changes on a regular basis as new items come in weekly.

The boutique offers appointments between 10am and 2pm on a Thursday and Saturday for ladies to come in and have a private shopping experience. Here, the girls can help you with putting a capsule wardrobe together and advise on new

styles and fresh looks.

Harrogate is one of the best places to live in the UK. Fact. And you don’t just have to take our word for it.
