Dear Regina Alumnae, Since joining the Regina family in January, the pleasure has been distinctly mine virtually meeting many of you along with observing the camaraderie and participation with the alumnae events.

Yes, the events had a unique twist this year, yet the enthusiasm and sisterhood of the Saddlelites were not diminished! Can we talk about March Plaidness? Ladies, over $34,000 raised to support our current and future students of Regina! Remarkable! Thank you all who participated, and congratulations to the class of ’94. It was a nail-biter until the end as 1978 and 1989 were pushing hard. Good luck to all the classes for next year. Subtle hint number one, the bar is set! Get ready. 😊 The current young ladies of Regina are fortunate to have such a vast array of successful, accomplished alumnae. They share the sense of pride of attending a school rich in tradition and academic excellence with women who have impacted their professions and communities. Women of faith and values of whom are role-models, with some as mentors. At a time when women are continuing to break boundaries and have stronger voices, the moral and intellectual foundation provided by Regina High School is a blessing. We need to continue to support the mission of transforming girls into women of faith and vision. It will take all of us – staff, faculty, parents and alumnae to maintain the legacy of the Saddlelites.

We are moving forward with our STEM Initiative, upgrading curriculum and facilities to best prepare Regina graduates for the demands of the changing world and workforce. It is our goal to have our young ladies poised for success with best in class academics and a solid faith foundation. It is our goal to continue to have outstanding Regina Alumnae who are independent, critical thinkers making their mark on the world. This would not be possible without wonderful support of YOU. My Fellow Regina Alumnae, What another year it has been. With all the challenges that the pandemic has brought us, one thing has remained the same for me: I am extremely grateful for Regina High School and the Saddlelites that I am able to help every single day. I have been even more proud to be a part of the Regina family this year, especially watching our administration navigate us through COVID. Principal Diamond and President Treder Lang have kept our young women’s health and safety at the forefront of every decision they have made. Their focus was to keep everyone under this roof safe, healthy, and happy. I am happy that our senior class and the entire student body were still able to experience our one-of-a-kind Regina traditions that I’m sure you all remember as if they were yesterday, like Powderpuff. There’s no day like Powderpuff Game Day when you’re a Saddlelite!

Despite overcoming some roadblocks along the way, Regina and the Alumnae Association have so much to be proud of from this past school year. For one, in our fall issue, we featured impressive Alumnae in our first “40 Under 40” series. These women have excelled after graduating from Regina with so much still ahead of them! We also completed our third annual March Plaidness Giving Challenge, and I am being honest when I say that I cried tears of joy when it was over. Over $34,000 in tuition assistance! I was blown away by all the support during the competition. The best part was telling ten families that they were going to receive tuition assistance. This number has continued climbing with each year we have done the competition, and I pray that will continue to grow so we may help more of our fellow Saddlelites.

A new and exciting tradition that started this year for our Saddlelites is the Kairos Retreat. This past March, I helped start and lead our very first Kairos for 50 of our students. This retreat opened up our students’ eyes to their own goodness and worth, while showing them how God is working in their lives. I am so thankful that our administration trusted me with this process, and I cannot wait to see more of our Saddlelites benefit from this faith-filled retreat.

While we look ahead to next year, we have a great deal to look forward to. The project I am looking forward to the most is our STEM Initiative. If you look on pages 10-11, Regina has developed plans for a STEM Makerspace Lab that will transform a few of our classrooms and allow our students to become the future leaders of tomorrow. Over 68% of our graduates from the last 3 years have chosen to study a STEM program in college. This space will allow them to advance their skills while collaborating with their peers on hands-on, real-world projects.

As we look ahead to next year though, we are mostly praying for the peace and health of our entire Regina Family. We pray that we will be able to actually see our Saddlelites’ smiling faces every day, not through a camera or hidden behind a mask; and we pray that our Alumnae will help us continue our mission that we strive to achieve every day: Transforming girls into young women of faith and vision.

Regina's First Kairos Retreat!

Regina held its first Kairos retreat in March 2021. Kairos allows young adults come to the realization that God is truly working in their lives. The students become more aware of how worthy, blessed, and loved they are. We had 50 Regina students attend our first retreat, and we are looking forward to Kairos becoming another great Regina tradition where our young women can continue to strengthen their relationships with themselves, with others, and with God.

“I never believed people when I heard them say how life-changing Kairos is. These two words are used by so many people to describe this retreat, and now I can truly say I am one of those people. This is more than a retreat, it is an eye-opening experience that shows you how much you relate to other people and how much you are loved. Coming out of the retreat, I feel like a new person with the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders. I have now formed the belief that every single person needs to experience Kairos.” – Isabella Pine '21

Principal Ann Diamond '94: Catholic Foundation of Michigan's "Amazing Catholic Educator - Principal Award" Principal Ann Diamond '94 was recently recognized by the Catholic Foundation of Michigan and received the "Amazing Catholic Educator Principal Award." Principal Diamond was nominated for her endless dedication she has shown to the Regina community, especially this past year during the pandemic.

As a Regina Alumna, class of 1994, she stated in an interview with C&G News, her role at Regina is like coming home because she loves Regina and our mission so much. She has been Regina's principal for the last nine years, where she has worked hard to enrich all programs and opportunities for our young women in addition to ensuring that our building is a safe space for our students and staff to be in during the pandemic.

In a virtual ceremony, the Regina staff was waiting outside in the hallway to surprise Principal Diamond and congratulate her. “I just started crying. I never thought in a million years this is what I would receive,” Diamond said.

“It’s been very humbling. I’m just very grateful for the nomination and thankful to them for having me win this amazing award. I feel very blessed to have this job.”

Margaret E. Maruschak '64 "I was beginning to make it in a man's world, which was, to my surprise, becoming MY world!"

The Class of 1964's president went on to accomplish a great deal after graduating from Regina. She secured a position at Bristol Myers Squibb - a global biopharmaceutical company whose mission is to discover, develop and deliver innovative medicines that help patients prevail over serious diseases - and eventually earned an executive role at BMS. Margaret also held positions under Senator Chiles for six years, including a role as a speech-writer, staff assistant, and then as manager of the senator's Washington Office.

In 2020, she recently published her book, "Time To Remember," which recounts the impactful experiences of both her personal and professional life. Regina was grateful to receive a copy of the book, donated by Margaret's classmate, Dianne (Caramagno) Grose, who believed it to be worthwhile for our young women to read. "Time To Remember" contains inspiring advice for young women, especially in the sections and chapters entitled, "Learning to think for myself", "Don't follow the pack", and "Watch out for the bullies".

Margaret's story is accompanied by several photos of her traveling internationally due to her work in the Senate and at BMS. Notable photos include her living and working in Paris; traveling to Africa where she was a consultant to try and alleviate the HIV/AIDS crisis for BMS under Former First Lady Barbara Bush; attending a World Health Organization Summit in Switzerland; and hugging Former President George H.W. Bush!

Margaret's "Time To Remember" is a wonderful testament to her life and the perseverance she showed, and still does, by overcoming not only her shyness, as she states in the book, but also stage 4 cancer. We are very proud of all Margaret's accomplishments!

Beverlee Miller-Raymond '68 Founder and President of "Extraordinary Charities"

It seems as if Beverlee Raymond's philanthropic mindset continued at ironically the most perfect time to help her community. While she founded and opened The Extraordinary Charities Nonprofit Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 2019, I do not believe she realized that a global pandemic was going to hit, which meant her services at the ECPBC would be needed now more than ever.

According to the nonprofit's inaugural newsletter, ECPBC is a "nonprofit helping nonprofits. They are devoted to raising awareness of small but deserving Palm Beach County Charities. They also help them build their capacity, enabling these small nonprofits to continue their vital work in our communities communities of children, teens, adults, seniors - our neighbors who need a helping hand."

Right now the center houses the following local nonprofit organizations: aZul For Better Living; Family Promise of North/Central Palm Beach County; Feed The Hungry Pantry; Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches; Morningday Community Solutions; Sea Turtle Adventures; and Side Project.

Because of the COVID pandemic, the ECPBC's efforts, as well as the nonprofits they house, have doubled. According to the center's website, they have "been able to partner with Hormel Foods to purchase several tons of meat which they then distributed to hungry families. They have worked with Hospitality Helping Hands, supplying toys and food for their weekly distribution. They have baked thousands of cookies for clients of Meals on Wheels, and they have provided personal protective equipment to several organizations in the community. The nonprofit center served as a production hub for Digital Vibez’s virtual summer camps, and they have provided space for Genesis Assistance Dogs to train new dogs for their clients."

Now the ECPBC's goal is to assist nonprofits with their fundraising efforts in any way they can due to the typical large in-person fundraising events being canceled or postponed due to COVID protocols. However, Beverlee and the ECPBC are aware that just because their fundraising events have temporarily halted, does not mean that the need for their services have halted. The ECPBC is doing everything they can to ensure their services and other nonprofit services can continue by giving them the support and the exposure they need.

Our 2021 March Plaidness Alumnae Giving Challenge took place March 8-19, and it was our most exciting challenge yet! This year, we had 53 classes participate and 383 individuals donate - compared to our 35 classes and 160 individuals last year. Because of this amazing participation and support, we were able to raise $34,310.52, which is triple the amount we brought in last year! This competition and support proved once again that we Saddlelites are fierce competitors, and we will come together to support something that always hold a special place in our hearts, Regina High School.

There were several classes that showed true dedication throughout the entire tournament, especially the classes of 1978, 1989, and 1994. 1978 was determined to make it a three-peat while 1989 wanted revenge on losing the title last year. However, 1994 came ready to play as the true "Cinderella" story of the March Plaidness tournament.

They had 75 people donate on behalf of their class who helped completely surpass the previous year's total, which was only $325...They surpassed $325 immediately on their first day! The March Plaidness Champions brought in $4,038 JUST IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP ALONE! Their total competition donation amount was $8,346.80 - A NEW MARCH PLAIDNESS RECORD. We at Regina are beyond grateful for all those who donated to this competition. Because of our donation amount last year, we were able to award FOUR scholarships of $1,500 in addition to $10,000 to general tuition assistance. Because of this year's competition, we are able to award TEN scholarships of $3,000. We as alumnae understand the value of a Regina experience, and now we are truly making a difference to those who are now walking in the same saddle shoes we did. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Congratulations again to the Class of 1994 who is this year's best plaid...that is until next year!!

THE SUCCESSFUL First Female Commandant for the Marine Corps League: Montford Point Detachment #158 Q: TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND FOLLOWING REGINA. A: After graduating from Regina in 1997, I attended Lawrence Technological University in Southfield with the intention to major in Interior Design. I attended LTU for one year before changing my major to Business Administration and dropping out. I worked after that, but still had a strong desire to get my Bachelor’s Degree.

My boyfriend at the time was looking to turn his life around and was considering joining the Marines. I attended a meeting with him and as they were running around the track, I thought about joining as well so that the USMC could pay for my college education. So in May 1999, I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) for educational purposes. They paid for 100% of my Associate’s Degree from Campbell University in North Carolina (2004) and 1/3 of my Bachelor’s Degree from Concordia University Texas in Austin, TX (2010). I served in the USMC from 1999 – 2003.

My then boyfriend never enlisted….

Q: DESCRIBE YOUR POSITION AT THE MEDICAL CENTER AND YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS COMMANDANT. A: At the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Midtown Detroit, I am a Reimbursable Billing Technician with the Consolidated Patient Account Center (CPAC), which is aka, Patient Billing. I assist Veterans with copays from services rendered inside the VA medical center. If they have questions about those copays or need to set up payment arrangements for them, I get them the information and paperwork they need.

As Commandant of the Marine Corps League Montford Point, I am the first female to hold that title for that Detachment! I found that out after being sworn in, making my acceptance of this non-profit volunteer Veteran organization position more worth while! The Montford Point Marines were the first Black Marines in the Marine Corps! They trained the same as their White counterparts, yet were segregated. They were integrated in the USMC in 1942. As Commandant, I help my Marines to maintain that legacy of those Marines that went before us, paving the way for us to serve. There are some people that cross our paths that do not know about the Montford Point Marines or that there is a Marine Corps League Detachment still in Detroit.

It’s also part of my job there to get the word out about us, maintain our membership, and recruit more Marine veterans to grow our membership, bringing the Detachment into the 21st century.

SADDLELITE

Q: WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCES IN YOUR CAREER? A: One of the most rewarding experiences of my VA career was after my stint as a Telephone Operator in the Switchboard of the Detroit VAMC (2017 – 2018), where I was able to utilize those skills in an emergency situation in my new position in the Release of Information (ROI) department in 2019. A veteran had requested his VA Medical Records and as I was processing that large request, he informed me that he was about to have a seizure and asked if I could hurry the process. I told him I was working as fast as I could, reassuring him it wouldn’t be much longer. As his symptoms progressed, he took himself out of the chair he was sitting in and sat on the floor instead, asking a fellow Veteran who had been waiting to make sure he didn’t hit his head. It was at that point that my Telephone Operator skills kicked in and I called his emergency code, a Code Blue, speaking with one of my former coworkers, who announced the code and the Rapid Response Team was there like a shot! The veteran was taken to the ER via wheelchair, ended up being okay and even

sent an ER nurse back to ROI to pick up his records! I was sooo thankful that I was able to not only fulfill his medical record request, but also actually save his life! What a blessing!

Q: WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? A: In my free time, I love to dance! Detroit Urban-Style Ballroom Dance! I began lessons in December 2016 and it was a great decision to have learned! I still enjoy bowling, and my craft projects have kept me sane during the pandemic!

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES OF REGINA? A: Mostaccioli and Chicken Sandwiches for lunch! Our uniforms w/Saddleshoes! And Powderpuff!

Q: WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO CURRENT SADDLELITES? A: Take it all in! There’s a lot to learn, especially if you don’t identify with the Catholic faith. And, there’s even more to learn at Regina! I’m so thankful for my Regina education/ experience!

Q: WHAT LESSONS DID YOU LEARN FROM REGINA THAT YOU THINK HAVE HELPED YOU IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER? A: One of the most significant lessons I learned at Regina was from a 10th grade English teacher whose name escapes me right now, but she had a platinum blonde bob and red glasses! Anyway, she taught us that if we wrote an angry letter to someone, WAIT 24 hours before mailing it! We may not feel the same way after that time! Great advice I still use today!

The Alumnae Association was blessed with a beautiful Spring day on Saturday, March 27, for our second annual Easter Egg Hunt!

Children sprinted around our back athletic fields for an egg hunt filled with treats and prizes. After the hunt, picnic tables were spread out across our entire parking lot for families to sit down and eat lunch, open their eggs, and color on Easter-themed coloring books.

The day, of course, wouldn't have been complete without a visit from the Easter Bunny, who was walking around the entire morning visiting with the kids and taking photos. Some of our future Saddlelites also stopped by our Saddle Shop for some Regina gear!

It was a wonderful day seeing alumnae and other members of our community bring their little ones to see Regina's campus.

Our third annual Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for Saturday, April 9, 2022. More information will be communicated closer to the event. We hope to see you there!

Seniors defeat Marian to claim the 4-Peat!

After a long-awaited game, the senior class of 2021 was finally able to play their own Powderpuff game on Saturday, April 24.

With the game usually played in September, the seniors spent their entire school year patiently waiting for their turn to take part in this Regina tradition. The wait certainly seemed to help the class of 2021 though because they came ready to play!

The "Vipers" dominated the entire game and won with an impressive score of 31-7.

While we were not able to welcome our entire alumnae community to the game as usual, some alumnae were able to attend and cheer on the seniors. We pray that we will be able to experience this Reginafavorite tradition safely next year with more alumnae in attendance!

A special ceremony was done prior to the game to honor long-time Marian Athletic Director, David Feldman, who passed away earlier this year due to COVID. Members of Marian's senior class were accompanied by David's family as well as Regina senior, Heather Broski, David's niece.

14 Annual Mass & Brunch The Alumnae Association welcomed members of the alumnae community on April 25, 2021, for the 14th Annual Mass & Brunch. Due to COVID, we did not have our typical sit-down brunch, but instead a togo-box of delicious breakfast pastries and fruit. It was wonderful to celebrate Mass as an alumnae community after not having physically been together in quite some time. The Mass was dedicated to all those in the Regina family who have lost loved ones during the pandemic, and especially to our Regina sisters, Carmen Patton '83 and Cara Estrada '01.

Catherine (Kanka) Shea '11 and her husband Zack welcomed their first child into the world in February 2021. Their daughter, Austin Louise, was born on February 16.

Congratulations to Lindy Barnes '09 who got engaged to Dan in July 17, 2020, on Belle Isle in Detroit!

Maranda (Ireland-Smith) Sandoval '09 and her high school sweetheart, Julian, were married in 2017 in Detroit. They are preparing for their first child, a boy, due in July 2021!

Chelsea DeLamielleure '11 got engaged to boyfriend, Miles, while in Nashville on New Years Eve. They were surrounded by family and friends, including classmate, Catie (Murray) Steinwascher.

Mia Biretta '11 held her wedding shower this past April where she had several of her Regina classmates there celebrating her! Mia and her fiance, Jessie, will be married in May 2021.

1974 graduates, Debbie (Whalen) Togger and Carol (Vandevoort) Goodman, reunited and visited Holland, Michigan.

Congratulations to Sarah (Gulino) Sorise '08 and her husband Frank! After stressfully trying to plan their wedding during the pandemic, Sarah and Frank were married on September 12, 2020, on the rooftop of the Detroit Opera House in downtown Detroit.

They were grateful for beautiful weather and for their families and friends who were able to be there with them to celebrate! (Picture also at top of page)
