Regina High School is a Catholic college preparatory school in the Franciscan tradition of peace, service, and respect for unique dignity of each person. Leave Your Mark on Regina High School!

Become a permanent part of the history of Regina High School by purchasing a brick paver to be installed in one of the four courtyards!

These pavers will create a “pathway” to each of the four beautiful statues, which will serve as focal points for courtyard visitors.

Each paver offers the perfect opportunity to acknowledge a group, such as a Class, Club or Organization; be a memorial for a parent, alumna, grandparent, friend or other relative; or to commemorate a special occasion.

Just as the building blocks of education leave a lasting impression on our students, you are invited to leave a personalized lasting impression on Regina High School.

It has been an exciting school year thus far here in the Alumnae Office. We have set many goals to re-engage the Alumnae Community. We are working towards updating our database by trying to confirm and update contact information. We are looking to increase our communication about upcoming events and the impressive accomplishments of our current Saddlelites. We are organizing funding to create Alumnae Association Scholarships for incoming or current Saddlelites to help them receive the same excellent education and unforgettable experience we all did.

And lastly, we are adding events to our calendar that will allow our Alumnae to remain connected with each other and the school. There are more ideas on the way, so stay tuned!

I hope that you will continue supporting Regina High School in any way you are able—whether it is by attending one of our upcoming events, such as the Mother’s Guild Fashion Show or the Easter Egg Hunt in April, by updating your contact information on our website, or by generously donating to our new Alumnae March Madness Giving Challenge to help kick off the funding for an Alumnae Association Scholarship.

Mrs. Weinert, Mrs. Keifer, and Mrs. Robertson taught me about the kind of teacher I wanted to be. They were genuine, quirky, and full of love for teaching. Mrs. Kiepke was why I became a math teacher.

Sister Ruth Anne Kelly. She was a teacher that was a friend and encouraged me to further my education. I graduated with a Graduate Degree in Gerontology. May Sister Ruth Anne rest in peace.

- Lori Grewette Deshalla ’95 Mrs. Biondo was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She was also a great role model for me & was a very important person to me in such a pivotal time in my life. I lost my mom my sophomore year & Mrs. Biondo was there for me. I still have a relationship with her all these years later.

Ms. Gagnier, she was so engaging and made you LOVE literature regardless of how difficult and boring it may be.

She always reminded me of Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society. She was dedicated to us girls and while she could be tough, she was also a shoulder to cry on and teacher who could appreciate a good joke.

I’ll never forget her story of her glass eye my first day of freshman year! And I still love Shakespeare thanks to her.

12 years of Catholic school & my favorite teacher was Sr. Mary Blandine. I don’t even know if there is one reason. She was firm & tried to be serious, but I could always get her to laugh. She was just a really nice person. In tough times, was very understanding & compassionate. Also, special place in my heart for Sr. Hyacinth. Ms. Carvill was an incredible science teacher. She’s the reason I became a middle school science teacher myself. My favorite teacher, the woman who changed & saved my life was Ms. Moser. I took every literature class that she taught, & continued to write to her many years after I graduated. I dedicated my Master’s Thesis to her because without her wisdom & grace, I would have never been able to see the value of my ideas or the potential I had. - Patricia Schuman Monaghan ’96

Ms. Gagnier & Ms. Brinker led me to becoming an English teacher. They both had ability to capture the whole classes’ attention. Dedication to both their subject & their girls was very apparent...I never liked history until I had Ms. Biondo. Her test prayer carried me through college. She loved us like we were her own. She was inspiring & hardworking. Finally, Ms. Moscotta, who bravely faced cancer in front of us. She showed us that death was not something to fear. She gave it her all, which inspires me each day to live life to the absolute fullest.

Mrs. Weinert was one of my favorites—she was the first openly feminist married woman I’d ever encountered in my life. She treated us like adults. She challenged me to think about my place in the world differently and gave me an example of how you could be quietly subversive in your normal life.

I adored her class because we talked about big ideas that were important, and when I lined up for graduation in her room, she rolled up her projector screen to show us her most important life advice: “moisturize, moisturize, moisturize”. I stole that when I had to speak at commencement as a teacher and class advisor. It brought the house down...I think of all of [our teachers] so often now that I have my own classroom full of other people’s children. If I can give my students a *fraction* of what our teachers gave us, I would be happy.

Mrs. Robertson was my sounding board after my sister died. Besides being a great support system, she was phenomenal in the classroom, & I think about her often now that I am a teacher. I appreciate her work, teaching style & instructional methods even more now as an adult.

Mrs. Sawicki, who was Miss O while I was a student, also impacted me all 4 years with forensics and debate. I’m a teacher, in part, due to these wonderful women.

- Carol Ziegenbein Osborn ’84 Mrs. Michele Robertson, Mr. Chris Taylor, Mrs. Sherill Cucchetti Piscopo. These three teachers really cared about their students and made me feel like I was special and could accomplish anything I set my heart and mind to. I will forever be grateful.

- Dina Blair Janda ’83 So many fabulous teachers, but Mrs. Robertson was by far the best— she elevated everyone around her, taught us to be big thinkers & aware of global issues. - Michele Helm Baer ’90 Mrs. Robertson is hands down my favorite Regina teacher. She not only fostered my love for all things social studies, she pushed us way past our limits. Her rigor taught me not to underestimate or second guess myself. Once more, her writing critiques improved my rhetoric far more than any other teacher’s. She is the reason I didn’t have to take college writing courses. I will forever adore her & her blunt but loving personality. - Danielle Butz ’07

Saddlelites Mary Chase ’07 Mary completed her Master’s Degree in Teaching and Curriculum, concentrating on Educational Psychology from Michigan State University. Mary currently teaches kindergarten at St. Mary Royal Oak.

On December 17th, Alexandra Cervenak, 2003 graduate, was one of the contestants on Jeopardy! Alexandra is currently the Site Supervisor and Foodways Specialist at Plimouth Plantation, which is a Living History Museum in Plymouth, MA. She earned her BA in English and History from Wayne State University and her MA in English from Brown University. You can read more about her background on our website under “Alumnae Spotlight.”

Monica Brugnoni ’13 Monica recently completed an Accelerated Second Degree Option for Nursing -Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Detroit Mercy. Monica recently moved to Denver, Colorado, to begin her nursing career on an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a major medical center in the heart of Denver.

This semester Katherine graduated with her Master’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University after finishing her undergrad at Michigan State University. Her degree is in Integrated Marketing Communications. Katherine is pictured with her proud dad, Jimmy, and her boyfriend, Jake Piepszowski (UofD Jesuit, ’09).

Linda Pio Anayee ’09 Linda graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D.) from Manchester University in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in May of 2018.

Jacqueline Paredes ’13 Jacqueline recently earned her Masters of Business Administration from Central Michigan University.

Julia was admitted to the Honors College First Year Council at Michigan State. The FYC was established to build leadership skills for a nominated pool of first-year students within the Honors College. The nomination process takes place within the first few weeks of the fall semester. The FYC leaders attend workshops that are designed to assist them on successfully navigating the academic, personal, social and professional aspects of their college lives. Faculty and other guest speakers are invited to share their knowledge and experience around holistic themes, such as leadership development, career advancement, research opportunities, diversity and inclusion, and service learning, among other themes.

Regina Runners Set College Records Liz Bloch ’14: Earns GLIAC Honors, Sets Goals for Final Season In Bloch’s 2018 spring season at Michigan Tech University, she set a school record in the 1,500meter run and in the 800 run, a record she had previously beaten in the 2016 season. She claimed with Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship in the 1,500 and finished third at the championship in the 800. Thus she finished her GLIAC season earning first and third-team All GLIAC honors. Bloch’s performance qualified her for the 2018 NCAA Division II championships where she finished 15th in the preliminary round, just shy of reaching the finals. She has one season left at Michigan Tech and has set divisional and national goals for herself in her last season.

Liz credits her student-athlete experience at Regina and the coaching staff for helping prepare her for her career at MTU. Coach Gregg, Coach Becky, Coach Dunn and Coach Valgoi taught the team to enjoy their training, but more importantly, to work as a team. “The camaraderie present on the cross country team at Regina was so special, and I made life-long friends in my four years competing there. Although focus was on developing us as athletes, [the coaching staff] stressed the importance of performing academically which has been important in my experience at MTU. Having balanced a challenging academic load with an athletic career at Regina helped me to transition more smoothly into my career at MTU.” Having developed a passion for both physiology and biomechanics, Liz graduated in May with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree also in Biomedical Engineering. She worked in the Integrative Physiology Lab as an undergraduate and is now working in the Engineered Biomaterials Lab as a graduate student. Following the completion of her master’s degree, Liz will be looking for opportunities to apply her engineering background to a clinical setting and is ready for the next challenge in her life!

Gina Valgoi Brady ’09: Named to Loyola’s Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2019 In Loyola’s press release, they described Gina as “one of the most decorated runners in Loyola cross country/track and field annals. The first female in Loyola history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships (2012), Valgoi was a Second Team United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor All-America pick in 2013 after placing 13that the NCAA Championships...Valgoi set indoor school records in the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m and ran on Loyola's 4x1600m relay team that shattered a school record at the prestigious Drake Relays in 2013. As a senior, she set new outdoor school standards in the 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m. Named the Horizon League Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2012 after capturing first place at the league championship, Valgoi also collected championships in the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m at the 2013 Horizon League Indoor Championships on her way to Women's Individual Scoring Champion status. In 2013, she also qualified for the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 10,000m.”

At Regina, Gina won the CHSL Walt Bazylewicz Outstanding Female Senior Athlete of the Year and the Christina Comito Memorial Scholar Award. She was inducted into the Detroit Catholic High School League Hall of Fame and still currently holds the best track 1,600 meter and 3,200 meter time along with the second best cross country 5k time in Regina history.

1986 Graduates Re Janine Krasicky Sadaj Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) East Central District Diamond Award of Merit At Regina, Janine was on the light crew for one of the musicals and served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Janine played Powderpuff and recalls “saving the day by grabbing a flag from one of our opponents when she tried to run down the field to get a touchdown. I ’tackled’ her.” Following Regina she attended Wayne State University, where she received a full ride! She majored in public relations with a concentration in marketing. Janine was very involved in the Public Relations Student Society of America and served on the executive board of the organization. She also had five internships while attending school to get experience in her field!

“I think that attending an all-girls school leaves you with the mindset that we can do anything we set our mind to. When I faced two layoffs in two years back in October 2001 and January 2003, I didn’t worry about whether I would be successful in my next role. When the right ‘job’ opportunity didn’t come my way in the second layoff, I chose instead to look for consulting opportunities and start-up J9 Media Solutions, a boutique public relations firm. At certain points in the first few months, I worried, but then I went to mass and handed it all over to God. I promised I would have the faith that I’d do well no matter what I chose to do. The result – I’ve been blessed to do what I love for more than 16 years – working to help nonprofits and automotive/technology companies with their strategic communications. The past few years have been amazing as I’ve worked to help raise awareness for a Detroit area literacy nonprofit Beyond Basics. It’s been rewarding to see them get the recognition they deserve for being experts in eradicating illiteracy.”

Janine is currently the president of J9 Media Solutions, LLC.—a Rochester-based public relations firm. It is a strategic communications consultancy specializing in nonprofit and manufacturing/technology industries.

J9 Media Solutions, LLC. won the Public Relations Society of America’s East Central District Diamond Award of Merit for its efforts to promote a documentary, “A Day in the Life of Elijah Craft” for Beyond Basics, a metropolitan Detroit-based literacy nonprofit.

“Beyond Basics is changing the lives of thousands of children in Detroit, Pontiac and Taylor by solving the illiteracy crisis with its proven solution,” said Janine Krasicky Sadaj. “This powerful documentary told the story of how one young Detroiter went from reading at first grade reading level to proficient in 14 weeks. Raising awareness of Beyond Basics and the illiteracy crisis that is plaguing Detroit and America is the most important work I’ve done in my career. I am so grateful that J9 Media could play a part in alerting people to this crisis and getting more children access to the skills they need to unlock their potential.”

by Beyond Basics, a nonprofit cofounded and led by Pamela Good. Beyond Basics uses a proven, research-based reading tutoring method and supplemental programs to teach students to read.

“Illiteracy is the largest solvable disability in Detroit and America. I’m very thankful for J9 Media and the journalists who have made the public more aware of how Beyond Basics is helping to solve illiteracy in vulnerable communities,” said Pamela Good, cofounder and CEO of Beyond Basics. “Only through literacy can we break the generational cycle of poverty in families and create opportunities to rebuild our community one family at a time.”

J9’s media outreach for the organization’s short documentary, “A Day in the Life of Elijah Craft,” produced by Keith Famie of Visionalist Productions, generated a front cover article in Crain’s Detroit Business, a segment on Detroit Public TV, an interview with Paul W. Smith on WJR, and created buzz on social media. This media coverage helped position Beyond Basics as a solution to combat illiteracy, establish the CEO as a thought leader, and build awareness about this epidemic in local, regional and national media.

The PRSA East Central District Diamond Awards competition recognizes and honors the very best public relations campaign and tactics executed each year. For more than 40 years, the district has present8 ed the Diamond Awards to public relations practitioners who have successfully addressed a communication challenge with exemplary skill, creativity, and resourcefulness. J9 Media Solutions was one of three organizations se lected to receive an award of merit in the tactics –community relations category in the 2017 competition.

eceive PRSA Awards Wendy Makowski D’Alessandro Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation At Regina, Wendy was involved in the Close-Up Club and Forensics Club. She was also a Eucharistic Minister and played Powderpuff. Following Regina she attended Central Michigan University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism (PR emphasis) and advertising. This degree was not what Wendy originally set out to study. She loved Sister Blandine’s biology classes so much that she was determined to study premed, even though Ms. Gagnier always told Wendy her gift was writing and storytelling.

“Regina instilled in me a strong work ethic and a sense of anything is possible when you dream big, prepare, work hard, and follow your faith. This has guided me throughout my professional career, especially now, as a business owner. The teachers who impacted me most are Ms. Gagnier– she made me a better writer; Mrs. Rosenthal– she taught me grace, poise, and Shakespeare; and Sister Blandine– she fueled my passion for biology and was unconditionally loving.

People sometimes mark a poignant event in their lives as a ‘fork in the road.’ Regina was mine. I transferred to Regina mid-year in ninth grade from a public school. The teachers opened my eyes to possibilities and set expectations that at the time felt insurmountable. Yet with each success– and each failure– I became stronger, more focused and confident in my abilities. Regina prepared me for challenges I would face in college and in life.”

Wendy is currently the founder and president of Lynn Public Relations—a South-Florida-based public relations firm.

Lynn Public Relations, Inc. recently received the Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation for its national media relations campaign for Skokie I11.-based Covenant Retirement Communities (CRC), the nation’s sixth largest nonprofit senior services provider.

PRSA recognizes and honors the very best public relations tactics executed each year. This year’s competition drew a total of 525 entries. Of those, only 82 organizations were selected by the Bronze Anvil judges as Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation winners. Lynn PR was one of three agencies selected “best of the best” in the media relations-consumer services category.

The awarded submission, “The Power of Storytelling in Senior Living,” highlighted the results of a yearlong media relations campaign designed to increase visibility of CRC’s brand, services, programming and lifestyle at 12 communities located in Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, California, Washington, Colorado and Connecticut; increase website traffic to each community’s website; increase the number of phone inquiries at each community; and establish executive leadership as experts/resources for senior living and age-related issues.

CRC experienced a significant increase in both the amount of traffic to the communities’ websites and in the number of call inquiries to the communities during 2017. Combined, the communities and the members of CRC’s leadership team were featured or mentioned in more than 1,500 pieces of print, online, and broadcast news stories.

“What the numbers don’t show is how we support our client’s overall mission to create joy for residents and their families,” said Wendy D’Alessandro, president of Lynn PR. “Every time a story makes a resident smile or creates a memory for families to cherish, that’s something to celebrate; that serves a higher purpose. These moments are why we choose to work in senior living.”

About the Bronze Anvil Awards: PRSA is the nation’s largest professional organization serving the communications community. For more than 45 years, the Bronze Anvil Awards have celebrated the “best of the best” in public relations tactics. These tactics—whether a media relations program, website, annual report, podcast, blog or use of social media—are the hardworking parts of any successful public relations program.

Life Expressions Decor Amanda Mock and her team from Life Expressions DĂŠcor provided all the materials for the painting and assisted with the process. Alumnae could choose their paint color and an expression to stencil on.

Many chose to go with a holiday-themed expression, but there were many more to choose from. Some enjoyed it so much they went back and painted a second one!

Christmas Party

Our Annual Alumnae Christmas Party was held on Thursday, December 6th, in our school’s cafeteria. It was wonderful to see over 120 alumnae in the building—some of whom have not seen our new Warren location before. Alumnae had the opportunity to visit with classmates while enjoying food made by the Regina kitchen staff and donated by local businesses, listening to the Regina Choral Ensemble perform Christmas carols, participating in 50/50 raffle or purchasing raffle items, and painting a wood pallet sign.

Most signs painted were perfect for the holiday season. Overall, there was something for everyone to enjoy and we are already looking forward to next year’s!

Class of 2008 10-Year Reunion Over the holidays, the Class of 2008 held their 10year reunion in joint with De La Salle’s Class of 2008. With the help of class presidents, Sarah Vizachero and Eric Tawney, and along with DLS’s Alumni Director, Dennis Koch, the event was held at the David Whitney Building in Detroit. It was great to see so many Saddlelites and Pilots together!

Alumnae Night Out! @ Kuhnhenn Brewing Co.

The Alumnae Association kicked off the new year with a great event at Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. in Warren, MI. Around 60 Saddlelites gathered for a fun night out to catch up with classmates and mingle with other graduating classes. Each alumna received a Regina pilsner glass while also enjoying a free drink token and unlimited wings and sliders. The classes of 1987 and 1990 tied for the highest attendance at the event with 10 women from their classes! We are looking forward to our next alumnae association event and the next alumnae night out!

From having two doctors as parents, it was no surprise that Joyce Purakal ’95 was interested in pursuing a career in medicine. The interest continued in high school when Joyce enrolled in the medical biology class Regina offered at Bon Secour Hospital. After graduating from Regina in 1995, she attended the University of MichiganAnn Arbor and double majored in Biology and Cultural Anthropology, which has been the perfect combination for her current line of missionary work. Joyce received her medical doctorate degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and completed her OB/GYN residency training at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor. When she is not working at her employer, St. John OB/GYN Associates or delivering babies and performing gynecological surgeries at St. John Main Hospital, she is helping inspire young women in Haiti to reach their full potential.

Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST KNOW YOU WANTED TO GO INTO A CAREER IN MEDICINE? A: I knew I wanted to pur sue medicine fr om a ver y young age. My mother is still a pr acticing pediatr ician. As a young child I idolized my mother and wanted to be just like her. My father is a physicist and he was a strong proponent of education, and he was instrumental in making me believe I could do anything. Later when I was in medical school I enjoyed the fast pace that the OB/GYN residents kept. I found that obstetrics interested me more, although I still love the babies! I enjoyed my time on Labor & Delivery, loved scrubbing gynecologic surgeries and seeing office patients from their teen years, through their childbearing years, through menopause and beyond! It has been a very rewarding and sometimes challenging career choice.

Q: HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN MISSIONARY WORK? WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE WHILE WORKING WITH H.A.R.T. AND DAYS FOR GIRLS INTERNATIONAL? A: About 6 year s ago I was invited by H.A.R.T. (Haiti and Africa Relief Team) to serve as a missionary doctor on a trip to Haiti. I wasn’t certain if this was the right path for me, but after my first trip I continued to go back to Haiti yearly. Being in“Being involved volved with short-term with short-term medical missions & medical missions & sharing the love of Christ as been a wonsharing the love of derful & uplifting expe- Christ has been a rience for me. I have wonderful & upmade some great lifting experience friends & learned how challenging it is to try for me.” to meet patients’ needs in a very high volume, low resource environment.

H.A.R.T. is an amazing charity! In addition to medical missions, H.A.R.T. has built a church in Haiti (St. Jude Parish, Morne L’Hopital), supported orphanages, initiated humanitarian efforts, educational programs, dental programs, & is currently building a chapel in another remote location. I have been

fortunate to not only serve as a H.A.R.T. missionary but also on the charity’s board of directors. Late last year we partnered with a local chapter of another charity, Days for Girls International, and started educational programs about menstruation, puberty, and the circle of grace to girls aged 10-18. We distributed Days for Girls menstrual hygiene kits to the young girls so they would have washable hygiene products to use during menstruation and not miss 5-7 days of school monthly. With these donated products girls can stay in school, progress to the next level and achieve their full potential.

Q: WHY ARE THESE TWO ORGANIZATIONS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU PERSONALLY?

A: Per sonally this joint effor t between H.A.R.T. and Days for Girls International has been a meaningful undertaking as it combines medical, humanitarian, educational, and spiritual efforts and allows us to promote global health and awareness. By talking to the Health and Anatomy/Physiology classes at Regina (November 2018), our youth are made aware of the suffering and hardships of young girls around the world. They hopefully realize that they are part of a global community and see these girls as their sisters in Christ.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES FROM TRAVELING TO HAITI? A: Some of my favor ite memor ies fr om my medical missions with H.A.R.T. are our team photos, crazy colored team T-shirts, taking a rickety boat to get out to a bigger boat to travel to the island of LaGonave, playing with the children at the orphanages, sleeping in tents on Fr. Roosevelt’s rooftop, delivering a couple babies in a mountain facility with no electricity or running water. There are too many fond memories to list when I reflect upon it.

Q: WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU THE MOST SINCE GOING ON THESE MISSIONARY TRIPS? A: One of the most compelling things I take away from the experiences in Haiti is the unshakable faith of the people there. I be18 lieve I was a faith-filled person, until I

saw men, women & children, some who didn’t have a proper bed to sleep in or food to eat, raising their arms & voices in song and prayer to God. That is faith, trusting in God even when it’s hard to be hopeful & circumstances are bleak.

Q: DID YOUR EXPERIENCE ATTENDING AN ALLGIRLS SCHOOL INFLUENCE YOU IN YOUR WORK AS AN OB/GYN OR WITH DAYS FOR GIRLS? A: My exper ience at an all-girls Catholic high school was a critical step in my path to become a physician and a missionary. The structure, discipline, respect & high academic standards that were instilled in me at Regina helped me to be well placed in the next stage. The environment at RHS fosters education, faith, kindness, and success.

Q: WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? A: In my fr ee time I enjoy spending time with family and friends, especially spoiling my 3 nephews and 1 niece (and another niece is on the way!).

I enjoy working out, yoga, wine tasting, traveling, cooking gourmet meals, entertaining, live jazz music, concerts, and mission work, of course!

In November 2018, Dr. Purakal spoke to both Mrs. Michels and Mrs. Cody’s classes about the mission of the H.A.R.T. organization. In part of her discussion she explained how grateful our students should be for their education and their lifestyles. As a result, our Regina family wanted to help make a difference. Mrs. Michels and Mrs. Cody’s classes collected donations for the Haiti and Africa Relief Team and Days for Girls International for a few weeks after Dr. Purakal presented. They were able to donate $845 to the organizations, which will help create 169 menstrual kits to be distributed in Haiti so those girls will not miss days of school while menstruating.

Q: WHAT LESSONS DID YOU LEARN FROM REGINA THAT YOU THINK HAVE HELPED YOU IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER? A: Lessons I lear ned at Regina that help me with my professional career are typing, all the math and science, commitment to service. Interestingly enough I work for a Catholic institution committed to service to the poor, reverence, integrity, wisdom, creativity and dedication to the ministry. Regina High School shares all these values as well.

Road Trip to Regina!

Michele Helm Baer ’90 drove from New Jersey to Michigan in October and made a couple stops along the way, including Regina! She was in town for a wedding and caught up with some other Regina grads while home.

Lauren Cody’s ’03 fiancé Evan proposed at Red Rock Amphitheatre in Colorado the day before her birthday this past November where he convinced her to wake up very early to see the sunrise. Before proposing, Evan asked Lauren’s mom and all her sisters for permission over a month before. They are set to be married in August 2019. 8 Shelby Liebler-Kukuk ’02 married Daniel in November, with bridesmaids, Catherine Torrento ’02 and Lindsay Zauner Fletemier ’00.

It was quite the Regina/DLS event on November 3rd at Grace Knoche ’06 and Bill Johnson’s wedding. The wedding took place at St. Hyacinth Church in Detroit, where Grace’s great-grandparents were founding members. She is the third generation to be married there. The ceremony was officiated

by Fr. Brian Meldrum, DLS ’02 graduate and former director of Regina and DLS plays and musicals from 2003-2007.

Ms. Michel’s Health Class welcomed Dana Hood, Licensed Professional Counselor and Owner of New Path LLC. into her classroom via FaceTime. Ms. Hood spoke about a variety of mental health disorders, stress management and careers in mental health fields.

Our Admissions Director, Alison Schaaf, with the help of the RHS Ambassadors, welcomed over 100 prospective Regina families at our annual Regina Rush event. Prospective students were organized into sessions based on their interests (athletics, theatre, robotics, etc.), and parents listened to a brief presentation on the history of Regina High School and then an alumnae panel.

In mid-November, the Regina Players, led by alumna Eleonore Ellero-Groth ’87, put on their fall musical production of The Little Mermaid. The entire performance including costume and set design definitely deserved a standing ovation.

OPEN HOUSE

Mrs. Reda and twelve juniors attended our first session of the Career Readiness Academy (CRA). The CRA is sevenmonth program in which members of the Detroit Economic Club provide career mentorship to students at Regina. They went to the MotorCity Casino Hotel for a lunch and conference. The keynote speaker was John Fikany, Founder and CEO of The Fikany Group. He spoke to the students about their Personal Brand and challenged the girls to think about who they are, what they stand for it.

Through the next seven months this group of students will have the opportunity to work with mentors in and out of school.

All teachers had interactive activities in their classrooms, but our science teachers especially had experiments that prospective students could quickly do during their tour at Open House!

CAREER READINESS ACADEMY

Members of our National Honor Society volunteered at a Christmas Party at the Royal Oak Senior Center. The party was planned by a local photographer who sponsors families for Christmas. This year, with the help of her clients, family, and friends, she was able to adopt four families and provide them with necessities.
