NEW TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: MEET MS. HAMMES By Athena Rosati '25 Every month the Regina Reporters puts a spotlight on a new teacher at Regina High School. This month we shine a spotlight on English teacher, Ms. Hammes. Ms. Hammes is an 1983 alumnae of Regina who has 28 years of experience under her belt. She currently teaches freshman and sophomores What brought you back to Regina? Mrs. Willoughby encouraged me to work at Regina. We worked together for 15 years at my former school. I retired from public education in January, but once I toured Regina and walked into my classroom, I saw the vision of what it would be like to work here, and I knew it was where I was meant to work. What are some of your hobbies? I enjoy making jewelry and oil painting. What is your favorite food or restaurant? My favorite restaurant is Roma Cafe, and my favorite food is Mexican, like street tacos, or Regina lunches.. What inspired you to become a teacher? I have wanted to teach since I was a kid. I used to go in the garage with a chalkboard and play teacher with neighbors as the students, that is where I learned I loved to teach. I would say my inspiration was my aunt., who was an English teacher, or my great elementary teachers, like Mrs. Flemming and Mrs. Ricci. They were fantastic, positive, supportive, and definitely inspiring. 1 I November 2023

CLUB SPOTLIGHT: BASE CLUB By Sophia Sparkman '24 B.A.S.E., the Black Awareness Society for Education, is a club that is facilitated by Faculty Moderator Mrs. Forester, President Zamiya Moss, and Vice President Elana Merkerson. B.A.S.E. seeks to educate and spread awareness about the experiences of marginalized people.

Moss and Merkerson offer a safe space for students to engage in open conversations using constructive dialogue to challenge stereotypes and racial biases while further exploring a variety of cultural outlooks. To further ensure the club’s goals of promoting diversity, the members attend informational sessions, workshops, guest speaker presentations, and cultural events. One activity the club has done is meeting with alumni to hear an older and mature perspective on race and awareness. With a primary focus on the Black community, participating students learn more about each other and the significance of what it means to find unity and allyship in your peers. As Zamiya puts it, “This community of BASE is a lovely community where I want everyone to feel belonged, I can't wait for the club to expand so it can get the recognition it deserves.” Regina Report I 2

ATTENTION SWIFTIES: MOVIE REVIEW By Sofia Switalski '25 Swifties all over the world fought for a seat at one of Taylor Swift’s one hundred and forty-nine The Eras Tour concert shows and went through a similar fight to get tickets to her movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. I attended this movie with my friend Ella Sikorski on opening night to see what this anticipation was all about. After both attending the concert in June, Ella and I did not know what to expect. Was it going to be a documentary about the concert, behind-the-scenes clips from the tour, or a recording of her entire show? We were shocked to see that the movie was a detailed documentation of one of Taylor’s final U.S. shows in Los Angeles California. From beginning to end, her entire setlist was played with up close shots of Taylor herself and her fans. Ella and I along with our fellow swifties in the theatre sang along the entire show and relived our concert experience. Ella claims, “The movie brought out a side of me I never knew existed”. We were pleasantly surprised by Taylor’s movie and rated it a 10/10! 5 I November 2023

A FAB-BOO-LOUS HALLOWEEN! By Sofia Switalski '25 Halloween, the spookiest day of the year, has come once again at Regina in the form of our costume competition! Each student plans and wears their best ensemble hoping to win on stage in front of the whole school. Let’s see who was successful in this endeavor this school year. The brave freshman, Noor Shaaya, got recognition for dressing up as “Sully” from Monsters Inc. and jumped in excitement when she got a gift card as the prize. Noor said, “The best part of winning is the gift card.” The sophomore winner was Emma Giuliani who was in character with her Kylie Jenner costume. She felt satisfied with her win and said, “The win was fulfilling.” The junior winners were a blast from the past with Sofia Switalski as George Washington and Natalie Lentine as a bald eagle. Natalie happily said, “I’m glad I got to make this memory with my friend.” And finally, the Senior victors were Kymara Lewis and Claire Pullen. Kamara says she, “Felt like a boss” in her foot costume. The costumes this year topped the previous ones by a mile, and the Regina community will be anxiously awaiting to see what the students come up with next year.

On October 22nd the Junior class received their class rings and celebrated their ceremony with a mass. During the mass the class of ‘25 received the blessing of their rings and celebrated this milestone in their life with their classmates and family. They were presented with gifts that represent their class including the mamba snake, white roses and a picture of St. Joan of Arc. After the mass the class of ‘25 enjoyed lunch cooked by Ms. Mary Jo and the kitchen staff. When Sydney Darr was asked what her favorite part of Junior ring was she responded with “ I really enjoyed being able to celebrate with my family and friends.” The Junior Class is happy to have their rings and is excited to have reached this milestone in their lives. 7 I November 2023

Dear Regina By Regina Report Staff

This month we here at the Regina Report are excited to introduce our newest column: Dear Regina. Each month we will be submitting students’ burning questions to our own resident advice expert, Regina, and seeing what pearls of wisdom she can give our students about life, school, love, and anything else that students’ may need help with. Q: What was the best piece of advice you were given in school that you've taken with you in your life. A: As the Boy Scout motto goes..."Be prepared" and "Do your best". Regina instilled those core values in me as I attended college, prepared for a career, got married, started a family and started a life. When someone expects a lot from you (even yourself), you try to achieve it. Don't be afraid to follow your dreams. Excel in traditional "boy" classes (math & science). Go to that door in your brain labeled "math" and "science" and open it up. Excel in traditional "boy" professions, as well as ALL professions (business, law, medicine, education, accounting, science & math). We need qualified candidates (both men & women) in ALL walks of life. We went to school in the tumultuous 60's when various movements were gaining momentum... hippies, women's rights, Black rights, gay rights, and Vietnam protests. It was an exciting and scary time to be an adolescent and find your way. Strive to be a confident woman That's not always easy to achieve, but very worth it. You are a child of the universe and have a right to be here. Google "Desiderata" by Ehrman.

Q: How you handled drama and boyfriend struggles while you were at Regina A:Date guys who share your values and interests. Ok, if they're cute, that's ok too, but not altogether necessary ! I was Senior Class President and dated the Notre Dame Senior President, all for political reasons of course, ahem. He was cute, but he had a problem with being on time. If he needed to come over at 7:00, I told him 6:00 so he'd be on time. Respect yourself. Oh and try to have younger siblings at home call your boyfriends by their right names!
