TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: MEET MRS. BRUCE By Olivia Kulla '25 Every month the Regina Reporters put a spotlight on a staff member here at Regina High School. This month we shine a spotlight on math teacher, Mrs. Bruce.! Is baby Mason excited for his first Christmas? He is so excited! He is getting a ball pit and Santa loves him. “You’ve been given an elephant. You can’t give it away or sell it. What would you do with the elephant?” I would set it up in my backyard as a pet. If you could have dinner with any two famous people dead or alive who would it be and why? Emmy Noether because we both did math and physics plus we have the same birthday (March 23rd) . Ann Miller because she is a tap dancer and is in a lot of old movies. “If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs—such as food and water— were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you?” My calculator because I am a math teacher and Mason because I love him so much.

If you could compare yourself with any animal what would it be and why? A cassowary because I just really like them! They look like a turkey but have fur and have a dinosaur thing on their head. They are really cute!
CLUB SPOTLIGHT: CONNECT4CANCER By Sophia Sparkman '24 This month we are shining a spotlight on the Connect4Cancer club by interviewing the President, Greta Hellebuyck, and Co President, Allison Krass, of the club. So Connect for Cancer is a national organization with countless schools, how is Regina making this club unique? A: We focus mostly on cancers that are exclusive or most impactful to women like breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer or just cancers that mainly affect people of our age range. G: A lot of what we focus on as well are organizations that aren’t through broader organizations. The fundraising we do goes exactly toward the Regina community. So last year for brain cancer which was commemorated in May, Mr. Manteuffel’s late wife passed away from brain cancer so we did some fundraising for that and then all of those funds went towards a scholarship in her name. So while Connect for Cancer is a part of the broader national organizations, everything we do is really tailored towards the Regina community.
What does this club mean to you and what does it mean to have these leadership positions for this club? G: I knew that I wanted to be in a Connect for Cancer club in high school at the end of middle school because me and my friend, Olivia (Torchia) both knew a lot of people that had been impacted by cancer. Since Olivia graduated, I am happy that we have still been able to keep it going with the club as leaders; especially this year with giving back to Ava Culakovski it shows that we’re not just helping organizations outside of the school but, more importantly, people that are within our community which is really fulfilling. What are hopes for the club in the future? A: That people are willing to step up and take leadership and have their own ideas because right now Greta and I do a lot of planning of almost everything so it would be great if newer ideas were thrown around. G: The biggest goal would just be to make sure that Connect for Cancer continues and finishing off this year with new fundraising ideas. Even talking with the underclassman to set in stone a new leadership team. Regina Report I 2

SONGBIRD OF PRAISE: MOVIE REVIEW By Sofia Switalski '25
5 I December 2023
A new film has taken over the internet in the form of the dystopian world we all know and love, The Hunger Games series. More specifically, the long-awaited prequel to the iconic series, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has recently hit the box office with excitement and buzz worldwide. Going in blind to this movie, I was hit with emotion, a new cast to fixate on, and a soundtrack that my sister would soon be tired of hearing on the way to school. Junior Natalie Lentine shares similar sentiments and states that she “LOVED the new Hunger Games movie” and that it is a “must-watch”. Natalie, being a hopeless romantic, explains that her favorite part of the long film was the romance between the main characters, Lucy Gray and Coriolanus Snow. Junior, Ella Sikorski similarly adored the film and its music, in addition to the shock the ending of the film brought. Without spoiling too much the consensus from Regina, and the world is that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a must-watch, regardless of your love for the magical world of The Hunger Games.
HOW TO PASS YOUR FINALS IN 10 EASY STEPS! By Sofia Switalski '25 As every student knows, the worst time of the year has arrived: finals season. With reviews in every class, and study guides being thrown at you, you may feel overwhelmed and unmotivated. Here are ten easy ways to ensure a passing grade on your exam and an A in your class. 1. If you haven’t paid attention all semester, crack that textbook open and get to work! 2. For those of you who haven't seen your calculator since August 23rd, please go charge it. Mrs. Forester does not give away any extras on test days. 3. Biology Students: if you are ever stumped on a question and feel like you need some assistance, take Mr. Mayer's favorite piece of advice: Look Up to God and Pray. 4. If your test is online, it might be a good idea to charge your Chromebook the night before. An even crazier but equally helpful tip would be to bring your charger to school! 5. Now for all you ceramic and art students who thought you were getting off easy: yes, you do have a final exam. Speaking from personal experience, you will definitely want to review the structure of a pot. 6. Cocoa and Cram is a thing. If you see hot chocolate and cookies laid out in saddles, they are not complimentary! Grab a snack and sit down with a tutor, ladies. 7. Calling all AP History students. Heimler is your new best friend. You will know him, love him, and be ready to get your “brain cows milked”. 8. Sophomores taking Chemistry, good luck. The Regina community sympathizes with you and will keep you in our prayers. 9. Freshman World History students, just know it could always be worse. Ask any of Mr. Dasin’s former Honors World History students, and they will leave you shaking with their vivid flashbacks of Mr. Dasin's testing days. 10. And finally, if you’re a senior, congratulations! Your break starts on Friday. With projects in every class but math, it’s smooth sailing from here on out my friends. Just know that everyone envies you.
These simple, yet effective tricks will not only benefit you but also your teachers. Remember, if you don’t know something, ask your teachers, they are here to help you! Happy finals week ladies, we can push through! Regina Report I 6
Dear Regina: Nun Edition By Regina Report Staff
Q: What were some memorable moments during your time at Regina with the nuns A: We had bought our senior moderator , Sr. Hyacinth, Christmasy colorful pajamas. When she opened our present, she exclaimed... “We wear regulation gray flannel pajamas.” Also in 1966 or so, our nuns (St. Joseph, Oh my...well, our hearts were in the right Third Order of St Francis) went from the spot !! traditional veil that covered the forehead to a headband veil, exposing their hair. Overnight, the older nuns went from gray to bright orange like a little troll you might When we were freshmen and sophmores, get in a bumble gum machine!! I guess they we wore a shorter blue blazer and a blue/grey all used the same hair coloring. plain skirt, knee socks and blue loafers. They sure looked bright and colorful ! When we became junior and seniors, we wore a longer blue blazer and a blue and white plaid skirt with saddle shoes Some of the girls would roll up their skirts to make them shorter. Our homeroom nuns would make us kneel next to our desks. Our skirts needed to touch the ground.

We had a "Christmas Bride" of Jesus who wore a wedding dress and carried a little baby Jesus to the nativity scene in the auditorium.
I‘m Dreaming of a Winterfest By Savannah Cutter & McKaylen May '25
Winterfest is a festival celebrated at Regina High School in honor of Christmas. Regina's families, friends, and alums share the Christmas spirit with the entire community. Regina recently celebrated Winterfest on the second of December with a petting zoo, caroling, hot cocoa and treats, and our Christmas tree lighting! Here is what some people who attended had to say about Winterfest!
“I am with the De La Salle Choir, we performed our Christmas concert last night, and it was a lot of fun so I decided to come to Regina for Winterfest” -Ender Straughen (De La Salle Class of ‘26)
My favorite part of Winterfest is the cookie walk! I liked all the options and they all tasted delicious.” -Alexis Byks (Regina Class of ‘25)
“I am at Winterfest to perform with the De La Salle Chorus and my favorite thing at Winterfest is the choir.” -Gabriel Enghauser (De La Salle Class of ‘26)
I am at Winterfest because I used to work here and Mrs. Forys still works here. Our grandson wanted to see the animals and we have been coming to these ever since they started. My favorite part about Winterfest is the part about Saint Francis when they light the tree and all that, the story of the first Christmas.” -Hank Forys (Retired Regina Religion Teacher) Regina Report I 8
