In Memoriam

Membership of any Oxford college or hall does not end with graduation. Friendships are often sustained throughout life and we are always interested to follow and celebrate the achievements of old members. At Regent’s, we are grateful for the good links we manage to maintain with many alumni and friends, often over decades.

In this magazine, each year, we list the names of those members of the community whom we know to have died. In doing so, we give thanks for their contributions to College life and seek to have fellow alumni the opportunity to recognise their passing; relatives and friends are vital in ensuring that the College receives and is able to share this news. We regret any omission and please do write to us if this has happened.

The Revd Dr John Eifion Morgan-Wynne

The following excerpts are taken from the sermon preached at his funeral by The Rt Revd Dr Keith Riglin, Chair of Governing Body. John Morgan-Wynne, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, pastor of the church, scholar, and preacher; and to me a teacher, mentor and friend, was born on 11 May 1935 and died on 3 October after suffering a severe stroke some time before.

John was a scholar all his life. Every morning of every working day John would be in his study (in the winter with gloves on and no heating!) surrounded by books in English, German, and Greek. He kept up his scholarship all his life, continuing to publish well into retirement.

His joy for his subject was infectious. John’s career as a tutor at Regent’s Park College began quite early, unusually for those days. John believed he was appointed because of the support of the then Principal and his mentor, Gywnne Henton Davies. In fact, there had been a campaign led by students of Regent’s who had so enjoyed the lectures that John had been giving as a visiting lecturer.

At Regent’s, John was simply known as The Dean. As students we knew, with all his eccentricities and knowing that no one is perfect, that with John Morgan-Wynne you had the genuine article. He was beloved in College, and he and his wife Enid were renowned for their famous hospitality towards students.

John’s life of service to the church, to the academy, and to the world, spoke of a faith in which generosity and compassion were incarnated. He will be much missed.

Telethon 2022

We are delighted to be holding our first telethon for a number of years in the week of 20 June 2022.

A group of our brilliant students will be calling alumni to update you on College news and find out about your life after Oxford, as well as to look for support towards projects to make student life at Regent’s the best it can be. The telethon is a great way for past and current students with shared experiences to connect with one another, and is an important fundraising event for the College.
