DEAR FRIENDS, What’s the difference between a rut and a groove? No, it’s not a joke – it’s a question we as a learning community spent time considering over the summer. In Marching Off the Map, Tim Elmore suggests that too often, we can mistake a rut for a groove as the roadmaps we’ve established to navigate daily processes and procedures devolve into routines that require very little thinking or challenge. Suddenly, instead of being in an innovative groove or productive zone, we can find ourselves in a rut, clinging to what’s predictable and safe. As a group of educators devoted to preparing young women to explore uncharted territory and to write the maps of tomorrow, we recognize that our methods must continually, intentionally evolve.

Our philosophical evolution reflects a physical one as well. Over the summer, we completed a major facelift of the main high school building, thanks to generous donations from Shea Family Charities, the Ahmanson, Parsons, and Brandlin foundations, Mr. Henry Jordan, and the NDA Board of Directors. Now our brand-new Student Learning Commons and updated classrooms more closely match the innovative teaching and prolific learning happening within.

Consistent throughout our nearly 70 years are the mission and charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame, which inform and reinforce every aspect of our community. On these pages, you’ll meet alumnae who demonstrate that spirit as they make a difference in myriad ways. You’ll also meet current teachers who are helping to equip the next generation to make a difference as well. Connecting them are the beloved traditions -- from freshman roses to senior sweaters, from class color to junior ring -- that mark the years. We all share the most vivid memories of Notre Dame Day. Compare yours to our most recent celebration on page 6.

NDA UNVEILS STUDENT LEARNING COMMONS Shea Family Charities Spurs Summer Renovation

As the sun set over NDA on Saturday, June 2, the post-graduation-ceremony calm belied the frenzy of activity awaiting the closing Alma Mater. Even as the final family photo was taken and the white chairs were stacked, construction crews moved in to begin a radical facelift of the high school’s main building.

Over 10 short weeks of summer vacation, crews hustled to transform existing second floor classrooms into the new Student Learning Commons, a huge, sunny space complete with modern, modular furniture perfect for both quiet study groups and impromptu dance parties. The south end features a glass-walled classroom where Dr. Rostamian’s innovation class meets each morning. The effort yielded three new classrooms on the third floor (replacing the former library), as well as updates to every existing classroom, including new air conditioning units, paint, flooring, furniture and whiteboards.

“I love the modern look and new technology in the SLC; they really foster a collaborative environment,” said ASB President Francesca Lewis, ’19. “The renovations added an extra element of excitement to coming back to school and now I can’t imagine NDA without them.”

The nearly $1 million project was funded through

generous grants from Shea Family Charities, the Ahmanson, Parsons, and Brandlin foundations, Henry Jordan, and NDA Board of Directors.

“We are so grateful to the Shea family and to all of our donors,” said Lilliam Paetzold, president and head of school. “Without them, this beautiful facility would have lived only on paper. Their support enabled us to bring all of our plans – and more – to fruition.”

“The renovation is far more than physical,” said Nancy Ehrmann, director of advancement. “It has truly reinvigorated us all in pursuit of our mission – to equip and empower our diverse population of young women to make a difference.”

That renewed spirit fueled “Your Change Makes Change,” a community effort in October to raise the last $30,000 to furnish the remaining six classrooms.

Current students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumnae joined in some friendly competition to complete the project by collecting change throughout the month.

“We all have a stake in this effort and in the beautiful results,” said Francesca. “Now, more than ever, it’s a home away from home.”

Build international relationships. Undermine prejudice. Transform lives globally. Those are lofty goals that Céline Aziz, ’05, distilled into a simple directive: “Don’t be afraid to color outside the lines.”

In her 26 years, Céline never wasted an opportunity not only to ignore the lines, but also to create whole colorful pages for herself, her family, and those fortunate enough to call her a friend.

subsequent career fueled her adventurous spirit and enabled her to immerse herself in foreign cultures.

During her brief life, she spent time in more than three dozen countries on four continents.

Most important, however, are the many lives Céline touched in her 26 years. She exemplified joie de vivre, bringing sunshine and spice to even the most quotidian task. Her courage and generosity continue to inspire those who love her and now will influence a whole new generation of NDA students through a scholarship in her name.

The Céline Lucie Aziz Scholarship for International Students facilitates global transformation by enabling students from India or countries in Africa, the Middle East, or Southeast Asia to participate in an academic year at NDA. The goal is to inspire other young women to follow their passions while making the global community a little more intimate.

For Srishti Srishti, the first scholarship recipient, her visit to NDA in the fall of 2017 marked many firsts.

“When I visited the U.S., it was the first time I saw and faced the outside world. I had never been away from my family even for a single day,” she said. “I was excited but at the same time very nervous.”

“Everything is new,” agreed Annie Anand, current Aziz Scholar, who arrived in September. “And I’m loving it all…especially In n Out Burger!”

In addition to expanding each girl’s physical horizons, the opportunity has inspired a better understanding of her own capabilities as well.

“Now I dream of a new place, of moving on from where I live because I know I can adapt anywhere,” said Annie. “I’m so thankful because the experience has been life changing for me, as it will be for many girls.”

“The trip made me brave and confident and it broadened my way of thinking,” said Srishti. “[I learned that] most talents are wasted without knowing their importance and without benefiting the world. If we know our abilities and our worth, and if we are willing to work for them, great things are possible.”

CY OF CÉLINE AZIZ A proud dual citizen of Canada and the US, Céline formed her life vision during her four years at NDA, where she was both a serious scholar and athlete. She earned a scholarship to USC, where she cultivated interests in international business and travel, fashion design, and service.

Céline chose a bold color when, upon graduation, she moved to Paris to study fashion design at the Paris College of Art. Her

Both Annie and Srishti attend Notre Dame Academy in Patna, India, whose mission statement, like our own, is “educating young women to make a difference.” As Srishti reflects, “Is it possible to make any difference by not coloring outside the lines?”

Thanks to Céline Aziz and her family, Srishti, Annie, and countless other Aziz Scholars will be able to consider that challenge on a whole new level. It’s nothing short of global transformation.

YOUR CHALLENGE = NANCY LAN'S OPPORTUNITY What others might pass up as a challenge, Nancy Lan never fails to reframe as an opportunity. The Class of 2002 alumna got hooked on the entertainment industry in middle school, when she learned the basics of film production on editing equipment Sony Pictures donated to Culver City Middle School as part of its community outreach.

When she embarked on her college-prep path at NDA, she brought her love of the industry with her and started the Film Club, in addition to leading ASB as president her senior year.

“I still feel a tinge of regret,” Ms. Lan says, “being born right between analog and digital.

Imagine the films I could have made on my phone!”

Although her other college options offered more creative balance, Ms. Lan chose the undergraduate business program at Georgetown University because “I fell in love with going away,” she said. “It was an opportunity to experience a new world, having grown up in LA.” It proved a fortuitous choice, as during her sophomore year fellow Hoya and then-Fox News executive Rich Battista founded GEMA, the Georgetown Entertainment and Media Alliance, designed to increase access to careers in entertainment. A GEMA-sponsored externship over Easter break reenergized Ms. Lan’s interest in film.

“It was an enlightening week, meeting people in every aspect of the industry,” said Ms. Lan. “And each interview contributed to an overall understanding of how the industry works, as well as all of the opportunities within it.” It also led to internships over the next three summers in music licensing, reality TV, and film production, as well as to Ms. Lan’s first position after graduation as a literary assistant with the management agency Brillstein-Grey Entertainment.

While those opportunities provided valuable industry experience, none offered Ms. Lan the happy medium she sought between the analytical and the creative, until she joined Fox Searchlight as international marketing manager. “It was the exact intersection of skills for me,” Ms. Lan said. “It balanced the creative yet relied on an understanding of business and economics.” And the smaller international marketing group within the larger company enabled her to quickly gain a wide range of experience.

Over the next five years, she studied “every function and facet of how films are marketed

and distributed, including the number of prints to release in a territory, trailers, festival circuits, and media buys. Within all of these things, the creative part is what spoke to me.”

From Fox Searchlight, Ms. Lan joined Disney in domestic creative advertising and worked on the Marvel movies from “Iron Man 3” to “Guardians of the Galaxy” to “Ant-Man.” “I got the least amount of sleep in my life and it was so much fun,” she said. “Everyone was working together to launch these huge movies.”

For the last three years, Ms. Lan has worked at Sony Pictures, where she has led creative marketing campaigns for “Spider-Man Homecoming,” “Blade Runner 2049,” and “Venom” as senior vice president, international creative advertising. Now just a few weeks into her new role in original films marketing at Netflix, Ms. Lan is prepared to take on a new challenge in her first global marketing job with an industry innovator.

“We’ve traditionally been attuned to theatrical releases and the importance of the opening weekend,” said Ms. Lan. “This new dynamic allows for an entirely different way to connect with viewers. It’s a new and exciting challenge.”

As for current NDA students contemplating careers in the entertainment industry, Ms. Lan advises (and her own experience demonstrates) that a breadth of exposure is essential because “you don’t know what you want to do until you know what you don’t want to do.”

With that in mind, Advancement Director Nancy Ehrmann has united a group of alumnae to establish the NDA Women in Media and Entertainment Network (WOMEN) to connect current students with alumnae in relevant fields.

“Like Nancy, many of our alumnae are active in every aspect of media,” said Ms. Ehrmann.

“This is a huge opportunity to link them with our young women for information, internships, mentorship, and more.”

Ms. Lan agrees that it’s about access. She suggests students “take a risk and reach out to networks at Notre Dame and in college and speak to people who are actually doing the work you envision for yourself,“ she said.

“Ninety percent of the time it will be a ‘yes.’”

That’s a challenge – and an opportunity – you shouldn’t pass up.

SOPHIA BEAUVY With exposure to more than 4,000 images each day, visual literacy is an essential skill in this digital media age. According to visual arts teacher Sophia Beauvy, that skill, along with an understanding of art and art history, not only develops analytical and critical perspective, it also fosters empathy. “Reading images allows for an understanding of how the world works philosophically, politically, economically, and historically. Visual language is not stable; artists within a context create it,� said Ms. Beauvy. “My goal is to enable students to grasp the structure needed to read images, which supports a more sophisticated analysis of their world. That, in turn, informs their art, and provides them the basis to create their culture in the future.

It opens them to a world of possibilities.� “Ms. Beauvy challenges us to bring our personal interests and what we observe about the world around us into art,� said Bella DeLuna, ’19. “She is constantly encouraging us to dig deeper and make our voices heard.�

Born in Canada and raised in Los Angeles by a Hungarian mother and French father, Ms. Beauvy traveled extensively during her advertising and art career, ultimately landing in Paris, where she could “view the US from afar.� Five years later, an international contemporary art exhibition prompted Ms. Beauvy to return home. “One work immediately caught my attention because it represented a new thought. The label identified the work as that of John Baldessari from Santa Monica, CA. ‘Why am I here if this work is happening there?’ I came home and later studied with Baldessari at UCLA.�

As a teacher, Ms. Beauvy strives to distill her academic and professional experience into practical art and life lessons for her students. She encourages even the beginning artist to stretch beyond what’s easy or accessible and expertly intuits when to push and when to pause. “I want to give them the education I wish I’d had in high school,� she said, “greater self-knowledge and an understanding of what it is to be human.

ALLISON COMPTON ‘96 E A R N S N D A A LU M N A I N S E R V I C E AWA R D What do you call someone who won’t be told no? Stubborn? Maybe, but we prefer tenacious, inventive, and resilient. We’d call her an NDA girl. And Paralympian Allison Ahlfeldt Compton, ’96, consummate NDA alumna, would agree.

“I’m living proof that it just takes one person to affect positive change,” said Ms. Compton, “even when the problems of the world can seem very overwhelming.”

The Manhattan Beach native grew up on the beach and dreamed of playing volleyball, despite being born with an underdeveloped femur. Multiple surgeries throughout childhood enabled her to wear a prosthetic leg, nicknamed Freeda (for freedom).

“I played volleyball throughout elementary school and at NDA,” said Ms. Compton. “I loved the sport as well as the community of athletes that inspired me to strive to do well.”

When her coach highlighted opportunities with a standing volleyball team for disabled athletes, Ms. Compton sought a tryout, only to discover the team was all men.

Undeterred, she earned a spot on the roster and began training with the team for the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney.

While US competitors accepted Ms. Compton, international opponents as well as the Paralympic governing bodies proved slower to adapt to a woman on the men’s team. After years of preparing and competing with the US men’s standing Paralympic volleyball team, Ms. Compton was denied her position on the court at the Sydney games.

Never one to be told “no,” Ms. Compton capitalized on what she determined an opportunity. She rallied the support of USA

Volleyball and the US Olympic Committee to establish the first women’s sitting volleyball team in time for the 2004 Olympic games in Athens. There she scored the winning point to earn the US the Bronze Medal. The team has medalled in every Olympics since and continues to impact the sport worldwide.

“My family always emphasized the importance of service, and that was reinforced at NDA, but I didn’t really recognize the magnitude of that effort and of the team’s influence until recently,” said Ms. Compton. “It shows that one person can make a lasting difference by investing in her passion and developing her voice.”

Although Ms. Compton has retired from playing volleyball, she continues to propel change as an advocate for disability awareness, speaker, and mother to three daughters. She currently serves on the Athlete Advisory Council for LA2028, an honor she partially credits to her NDA Class of ’96. When her classmates discovered Ms. Compton had been overlooked for the LA2024 Rose Parade float in 2017, they drafted a letter to the Olympic bid committee requesting a seat not only on the float, but also on the advisory council.

“Being named to the committee marks yet another personal milestone in which I was supported by my Notre Dame family,” said Ms. Compton. “The spirit of the school community played a big part in making that dream a reality!”

Ms. Compton will receive the NDA Alumna in Service Award on Thursday, December 13 at the annual Home for the Holidays dinner.

MERZAK TOUBAL When math teacher Merzak Toubal moved here from Algeria to join his sister in 1994, he didn’t speak much English, but he spoke the universal language of math. After perfecting his English, Mr. Toubal earned a degree in computer science from California Polytechnic, Pomona and a Master’s in applied math from California State University, Los Angeles. Now he can teach math (and life skills) in three languages: French, Arabic, and English.

Mr. Toubal discovered his love of math and his gift for teaching in high school, when he tutored six students for the International Baccalaureate exam in exchange for help in biology. “I found great satisfaction in being able to logically explain the concepts,” he said. “It also helped me build confidence in my own math abilities because it helped me identify my own strengths and weaknesses.”

Mr. Toubal has completely transformed the way I look at math,” said Ava Purcell, ’20. “Math was always a strength for me, but was consistently my least favorite subject [because] I found it very boring. But Mr. Toubal’s teaching style changed that. He makes problems that look extremely difficult simple and easy to understand. Also, Mr. Toubal starts every class by asking if students have any questions. He is willing to devote large portions of class time to making sure that every student understands. Now I tell everyone that math is my favorite subject, and it truly is. I am so grateful for him!”

Mr. Toubal’s expertise isn’t limited to math, though. He actively integrates general academic skills into his courses as well. “My own math experience informs my teaching,” he said. “I coach students on how to study, how to learn, and how to best demonstrate that knowledge on a test, not just in math, but in all classes.”

His methods are proven – all of his AP Calculus students passed the AP exam – and his students agree. Julia Silverman, ’19, says Mr. Toubal “gives incredibly meaningful life advice that will follow me for longer than the math he teaches us. The stories he tells in class help to lighten the atmosphere and make me happy to be in his class. Mr. Toubal is honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had.”

“When you share your knowledge, it enables you to do something good,” said Mr. Toubal. “It’s that positive impact that’s most rewarding, because when you do something good, it lasts forever.”

H E N R Y S I S T E R S E L E VAT E SHARING TO AN AR T FORM Sisters are known to share clothes, advice, and sometimes secrets. Even NDA “sisters” share headphones, Chef Mark’s snacks, and an occasional prom dress.

Not many, however, can happily share as much or as often as the Henry sisters do.

Talented NDA alums Meredith Henry Johnson, ’95, Brandi Henry, ’98, and Brittany Henry, ’06, have elevated sharing to an art form.

TROJAN PRIDE The Henry blood runs cardinal and gold, not just for the NDA Regals, but for the USC Trojans as well. They credit NDA with preparing them well for a challenging college course load.

“I left NDA with good time management skills,” said Meredith. “Reading eight or nine novels in AP English while juggling other classes and sports prepared me for the future.”

Brandi agrees on the value of her AP English class, despite it being her only B in high school.

“That was the very last time I procrastinated on a paper,” she said. “More importantly, analyzing the texts really developed my ability to think critically and to write – skills I use everyday.”

TALENT IN ENGINEERING All three pursued undergraduate degrees in engineering, albeit in different specialties. Meredith paved the way by earning her degree in computer engineering and computer science on an Air Force ROTC scholarship. She began her career as a computer and communications officer at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma, where she also earned a Master’s degree in Information Systems Management. Like Meredith, Brandi specialized in computer engineering and computer science, while Brittany focused on industrial and systems engineering.

“It’s important to get exposed to the different aspects in the field of engineering,” said Brittany. “There are so many applications and therefore, opportunities, especially for young women.”

“We often take engineering for granted, and yet it has a huge impact on people’s lives, particularly in the areas of defense, bridges, and public use,” said Meredith. “That’s why it’s so important to know your craft and to get things right.”

PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS AT NORTHROP GRUMMAN After separating from the Air Force, Meredith joined Northrop Grumman, where she’s worked as a systems engineer and software engineer for more than 14 years. She currently manages hardware and software integration for an unmanned air vehicle.

Following internships at Hughes Space and Communications, Intel, and Boeing, Brandi joined Northrop Grumman as a software engineer, where she now works in the Engineering Asset Management organization. She’s grown with the company for more than 16 years and has earned multiple awards, including the company’s prestigious President’s Award.

“My work is challenging because you need to think a little ahead of the stated requirements,” said Brandi, “and anticipate potential outcomes.”

“It’s long hours,” agreed Brittany, “but it’s really fulfilling. I enjoy what I do.”

Brittany has served Northrop Grumman as a systems engineer and industrial engineer since 2010. She has worked on several programs, including the F-35 and F/A-18 Fighter Jets, as well as Directed Energy Laser Weapons Systems. After earning her

Master’s degree in systems engineering from LMU, Brittany now works as a life cycle cost systems engineer and estimates the total costs of billion-dollar programs.

ADVICE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS

All three Henry sisters encourage each student to learn who she is and, in the process, develop her voice.

“ You must be able to articulate yourself and your position,” said Meredith. “Others may try to drown your voice, but you must be heard.”

“Learn who you are and explore your ideas,” adds Brittany. “Don’t be afraid to fail because that’s how you learn.”

Brandi sums it up with “Go for it – there’s no reason not to.”

STRONG FAITH IN GOD Just as it was fundamental during their time at NDA,

their faith continues to support the Henry sisters today.

“Along with the strong support of our loving parents, my faith has allowed me to know what I can achieve, to know what I’m capable of,” said Brandi.

“While things haven’t always been easy, faith has helped us all to persevere,” adds Brittany. “We know God’s always there for us in the good and bad times.”

“Because of my strong faith, I can appreciate the good times even more,” said Meredith. “We are truly blessed.”

With the strength of sisterhood these women share, it’s clear they’ll face any challenge together!
