CwS: Hey Grace! What’s so special about the Engineering Innovation Building?

G: My first impression was how the openness of the space promotes an engineering community! On any given day, I see the familiar faces of fellow engineers working in the labs surrounding me. The different lab spaces suited to each discipline allow students to immerse themselves in meaningful projects relevant to their passion.

CwS: And what’s it like hav ing AAO on campus?

G: Exciting! Their collaboration with Macquarie University will open doors for students like me to gain industry experience while studying. Ha ving AAO in the Engineering Innovation Building also inspire s me because there is a clear progression from students stu dying a degree at Macquarie University, to having the opp ortunity to intern with the AA O, to then working in the indust ry.

CwS: What do you love mo st about studying engineeri ng and science at Macquarie University?

G: I love how the projects tha t we do can be applied directly to the real world. In my astron omy major we are taught how to analyse data using data set s taken by telescopes across the globe, and in engineerin g there is a clear connection between the circuits I build and bigger-scale systems we use in everyday life.

CwS: How do you think this will benefit learning?

G: From the concrete mixing lab for civil engineers to the CAD labs for mechanical engineers, the building fosters

As a kid, Lauren loved LEGO and pulling things apart to see how they worke d. Now she’s a senior mechanical engineer at CSIRO , Australia’s national science agency, and her late st collaborator orbits 400km above Ear th.

Astrobee is a trio of cube-shap ed robots that float through the International Spa ce Station on fans, helping astronauts with resear ch and routine tasks.

Next up: robots to mind NASA’ s planned Lunar Gateway when no humans are on board.

Designing for space means dodging flammable materials, brutal temperatu re swings and zero gravity. It also means failing – a lot.

“If you’re not failing, you’re not learning.

While the spotlight often stays on the stadiums, Felicity believes the real legacy is found in how we move around our city, which includes improving road infrastructure and public transport for the long term.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to connect Brisbane and south-east Queensland,” she says. “We need to consider the uses of transport corridors and design from there.”

Felicity is pushing for the Brisbane masterplan to prioritise community benefits like parks and pedest rian access.

Drawing inspiration from the London 2012 Games, where bike lanes were routed through construction sites to keep loc als connected to the build, Felicity’s focus is centre d on usability, longevity and genuine human connection.

And her biggest priority? Cha llenging the industry to think bigger about what an Olympic build could become for Austra lia – not just during the Games, but for generation s afterwards.

“What if infrastructure could actively improve wellbeing, connection and eve ryday quality of life for people long after the Olymp ics are over? That’s the opportunity in front of us, ” she says.

s a power systems engineer for TasNetworks, Eddy is in the team working on the Ma rinus Link, which connects renewable energy networks between Tasmania and Victoria. His role involves loo king into faults and outages, as well as protecting the sys tem against large faults and disturbances. “All these thin gs help suppor t more renewable energy in the Tas manian grid,” he says.

To land this gig, Eddy studie d electrical power engineering. Mid-way throug h his first year of study, the Australian Power Institute (AP I) gave a presentation on their scholarship and some of the challenges in the renewable energy transition . “The concept of working in renewable energy seemed exc iting since it’s hugely important to Tasmania, where I’m from.”

With his mind made up to pur sue a career in the power industry, he successfully app lied for an API scholarship.

“The API scholarship guaran teed me work experience while at university,” he says.

“This set me up for work aft er university, where I was offere d a job with TasNetworks 12 months before graduating.”
