o other technology has transformed the world like AI – and we believe we’re yet to reach its peak. But here’s the thing: AI does, and always will, need humans. It needs curious minds to ask deeper questions, creative thinkers with their limitless imagination, and responsible leaders to define meaningful goals that truly benefit society. At Monash, we’re pioneering an AI education that works with these curious, creative and driven people. We’re helping students build strong AI literacy alongside human skills that matter just as much – critical thinking, collaboration and judgement. So whether you’re interested in healthcare, business, science or another field, you’ll have the ability to apply AI responsibly to make a positive, lasting impact. The future won’t be shaped by AI alone. It will be shaped by the people who know how to use it thoughtfully and with purpose. As tomorrow’s innovators and leaders, we hope you let your ambitions take the lead – and explore what you could achieve with AI.

We spoke to Professor Shonali Krishn Monash AI Institute and the Associate Dean (Innovation) in the Faculty of IT, to find out more about studying AI at Monash! CwS: Hi Shonali! Why should students choose AI at Monash? S: At Monash, we have the largest bench strength of AI research happening in Australia. We also have Australia’s fastest AI supercomputer, MAVERIC. Our university has really embraced AI, encouraging students to engage with this technology and use it for all kinds of societal good, like discovering medicines and disease cures faster. We’re very committed to creating AI entrepreneurs too.

CwS: What does ‘Monash champions human-centred AI’ mean? S: We don’t see AI as something that will replace us. We see it as a tool to help us be more effective and more productive in whatever we do. That idea is embedded into our curriculum. CwS: Tell us, why is gaining AI skills important in all degrees and careers? S: The future professionals of the world need to be AI bilingualists. Doctors, engineers, artists – all professions – will need to know when to use AI, how to use AI and when it’s not appropriate to use AI. Our new Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence has a structure with different minors to allow people to gain this bilingual capability.

WHO GETS TO CALL THE SHOTS ON AI? I want AI to do my dishes, not my art!
A
re you amazed, amused or a little frustrated to see AI writing poetry, creating art and making pet portraits? While creative AI can be useful and fun, you might still wonder why it isn’t doing your dishes, folding your laundry or writing your weekly shopping list. If questions like these get you thinking, you might want to explore what it’s like to be an AI ethicist. AI pioneer Alan Turing famously asked, “Can machines think?” back in the 1950s. Since then, researchers have developed technologies that can automate tasks, learn from data and now generate text, images, music and more. All these tools can boost creativity, improve accessibility and help tackle complex problems – but they also raise important questions. Who decides which problems AI should solve? Who benefits? And whose needs might be overlooked? As AI becomes more powerful and widespread, we need people who can think critically about why it is being developed, how it is used and what consequences it might have. Your voice could help shape an AI future that is creative, fair, safe and truly serves humanity.
