her gig, she focuses on land and health risks – one day might be spent testing soil contamination in a local paddock and the next, she’s knee-deep in a muddy creek searching for missing equipment! On careers in this area, Ella says, “Earth and environmental sciences are vital in creating a sustainable future. Industries that have the potential to influence the environment need to have an environmental or Earth scientist on their team to monitor impact and be an advocate for environmental rights.”

Degree: Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences) + (Honours) (Earth Science)

Wade has always loved science and studied physics and chemistry in high school because he was drawn to understanding how things work. Studying science at QUT felt like a logical next step to him, and he chose his major based on what fascinated him the most: Earth Science. It allowed him to explore how the natural world works, especially the processes that shape our planet.

“Now am an environmental scientist working for Environmental Earth Sciences, a consultancy providing practical solutions to assess, remediate, and repair degraded land,” says Wade. “I use my earth science and groundwater chemistry skills to assess site suitability, environmental liability and compliance. My job is the best mix of science, people, fieldwork and chaos.”

As a kid, Jodie made “potions” to see what happened when she mixed them all together. Thanks to encouraging parents and a brilliant chemistry teacher in high school, Jodie decided to give it a crack at uni — and she loved it! Now, Jodie works as an analytic chemist for an environmental analysis company called ALS Life Sciences. Her team gets samples from clients and uses various scientific instruments and tests to figure out what they’re composed of.

“I love working with so many cool instruments and really enjoy that my work has tangible results. Today, I’ve worked with ICP-MS, ICP-AES, and FIMS machines,” Jodie says. “My team and I are the reason a lot of the state has assured clean drinking water, municipal swimming pools, creeks and streams.”
