President’s Letter: SCSAA Reunions ’20 & ’21 Bring Energy and Renewal

The Alumni Association happily pulled off an exciting reunion in July, recapturing the energy that Sidney alumni and the association normally provide the community. Having missed reunion in July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the alumni association met monthly from January through June to be sure that combining reunions '20 and ’21 would occur this past July and that the community spirit, economic energy and general well-being would be felt and enjoyed by all.

Weather forced us to forego the canoe/kayak event on Goodyear Lake, pushed cornhole indoors at Awestruck Ciders and brought the Memorial Service indoors to Landers Funeral Home, but field hockey and March of the Classes went off successfully. Friday night at the Elks was a smashing success and Saturday night, dedicated to class dinners and reports, was exceedingly positive.

The association is proud to have maintained its vision, purpose and energy throughout the past 18 months and is proud to continue in its service to alumni, school and community.

New this year was the Saturday breakfast at the Community Cultural Center (formerly Congregational Church), managed

by Teri Schunk, Chuck D’Imperio and the entire D’Imperio family. What a happy, comfortable, spirited success! And yes, we will have next year’s breakfast there, as well.

So many thanks go to SCSAA directors and volunteers, but especially Bryan Innes, Teri Schunk, Greg Davie, Jess Wheeler, Chuck D’Imperio, Deb Puffer and Anne Mott.

Megan Lewis, ’24, Joins SCSAA Leadership Fellows

Hello, my name is Megan Lewis and I am a sophomore at Sidney. I moved to Sidney from Sherburne-Earlville the summer before my sixth-grade year and, since then, I have been a part of many clubs in the high school. I have also been given the opportunity to be a leadership fellow with the alumni association. Clubs I am involved include Interact and SSADD. I am president of the sophomore Student Council and the vice president of the Future Farmers of America.

I received the Star Greenhand Award and Outstanding Achievement award from the FFA. I am also very proud to say that I have maintained a spot on the Superintendent’s List, (grade point average of 95 or above) or High Honor Roll (grade point average of 90-94) since entering high school.

I hope to become the vice president of SSADD, treasurer of the Interact Club and a part of the Honor Society next year. In addition to my activity in different clubs, I also participate in varsity soccer, varsity track and band and chorus. In the spring and fall I also take Girls Who Code classes.

Once out of high school, I hope to attend a State University of New York college for my undergraduate degree and then King’s College in London for my master’s degree. I am considering pursuing many degrees, including political science, psychology, environmental law, Constitutional/international law or educational policy.

Anna Dewey, ’22, Appointed Alumni Association Leadership Fellow

Hello, my name is Anna Dewey, and I am a senior at Sidney. I’ve been at Sidney my whole life and have been very actively involved in many different parts of what Sidney High School has to offer. I am a three-sport varsity athlete, participating in field hockey, basketball and tennis. I am also an officer of several different clubs, including treasurer for Interact Club, president of Tri-M Honor Society and executive Student Council president.

I am also involved in SSADD and Drama Club, and a member of Honor Society. I am involved in the arts program at Sidney, playing the flute, piccolo and electric bass in our jazz band. I have been selected for Hartwick Honor Band for the past the years, and am active in All-County Band and NYSSMA solos. My recent vocal All-State level solo received a 99.

Along with many scholar athlete awards and presence on the Superintendent’s List, I have taken many college courses offered at Sidney High, such as college chemistry and composition. I was honored to be a recipient of a leadership scholarship from Wells College and an academic excellence scholarship from Russell Sage College in my junior year. After high school, I plan on studying forensic psychology to potentially work for the FBI. I would like to thank everyone involved in the alumni association for accepting me as a part of this group to give my opinions to better the community. Thank you for being so welcoming to a new leadership fellow.

Dates Set for 18th Alumni Sports Hall of Fame

The Alumni Sports Hall of Fame committee has emerged from quarantine with a carryover induction class and Legacy team from 2020. As we approach Induction Weekend, Nov. 12 and 13, we anticipate a record crowd recognizing a record-setting class.

Induction Weekend is at a different time, but the newly labeled “Class of 2020/2021” will still be celebrated on Friday and Saturday evenings. However, in lieu of a football game kicking off the weekend, the 30th anniversary Sidney Alumni Basketball Association “Alumni Night” doubleheader will take place Friday, Nov. 12.

The induction class and Legacy team will be presented between games to fans and attendees. Players from the 1970s through 2021 will be on the court in tribute to Coach Mike Brazee, a member of this induction class. An open-invitation reception for inductees, their families and alumni, sponsored by ACCO Brands, will follow at the VFW. There will be five inductees this year, showcasing many connections: a brother-sister tandem; two female teammates with All-State credentials; an alumnus and coach with gigantic victory totals; and a multi-sport AllState performer who came within a whisker of becoming a professional.

Here now, a look at your Class of 2020/2021: − Mike Brazee, ‘76/Coach – A 30-year basketball coaching mark of 425206 (67.4%), two-time NYS Class C Champions (1998 and 2007) and one final four appearance (2000). Seven league and division titles, and Basketball Coaches Association of New York “Coach of the Year” recipient. Varsity softball coach since 2000, league champions 2015, many Section IV tournaments. As varsity golf coach, (2013-‘18), his teams won three league titles, going unbeaten in league matches (2014-‘16) and finishing with an overall coaching record of 64-3. − Paula Foote Breese, ‘03 – Part of a group of Lady Warriors known for excellence in whatever sport was in season. Set school mark for goals in a season (26 in 2002), topped 1,000 points in basketball while leading team to a Class C finals appearance during a 26-1 junior season of 2001-‘02. Two of her relay school records – 400 m and 4 x 100 m shuttle hurdles – stand today. Won Mary Morrison Sportsmanship Award and enjoyed a decorated career playing four years of basketball at William Smith College. − Michael Graham, ‘01 – Lettered in tennis, soccer, basketball and outdoor track and field. In five years on varsity soccer, became all-time leader in goals (42) and assists (38) upon graduation. Member of 1997-‘98 basketball NYS Class C champs as freshman and 1999-2000 state semifinalist as junior; Sus League MVP 2000-2001, graduated second all-time leading scorer. On 4 x 100 shuttle hurdle relay school record quartet in 2001. In four years at Williams College basketball, won 2002-‘03 Division III National Championship as “sixth man.” Team went to national Final Four all four years.

− Caitlin Graham Polnaszek, ‘02 – Division I track standout, played four sports at Sidney. Soccer: 63 goals and 41 assists; set new standards, highlighted by record 21 goals in 2001. Defensive catalyst in 2001-’02 as NYS basketball finalist. During indoor and outdoor track (1998-2002) qualified for NYS meets every season. Ten Section IV titles (both); holds four school records; earned Morrison & Redmond senior Awards in 2002 at Monmouth University. Set Penn relays triple jump relay record. − Patrick Simonds, ‘06 – Versatility personified, playing three varsity seasons each of football, basketball, baseball and indoor track. Established six school records for receptions in football, earning All-NYS honors twice. Led Sidney to its only NYS crown in 2005 and best known for key interception to secure a semifinal win in the closing seconds. Solid hoops player, especially rebounding and blocking shots. All-State in baseball, with high marks for career offensive stats. Was a talented high jumper in winter track meets. Played four years as wideout at Colgate, and still holds several records for receptions. Was an undrafted free agent with the NFL Philadelphia The 2020/2021 Legacy Team is the 2001-‘02 Girls’ Basketball squad under coach Loraine Flyzik (Butcher).

This group ran the table unchallenged for its first 26 games, before dropping the final game in the NYS Class C Finals. Those 26 wins remain a school record for any basketball season, girls or boys.

Two additional reasons to celebrate: the debut of the new TouchPro system in the high school, doubling as a new alumni website and the initial Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship award from June 2021. These two entities have been major goals of the SHOF committee for several years.

Ticket sales have been brisk. The new venue is Club 55 Restaurant at 55 Union St., with a banquet room limited to about 140. We expect to handle the overflow in an adjacent room, with everyone joining in the induction festivities in the banquet room. In other words, get tickets early!

Alumni Outsmart Mother Nature for 2nd Cornhole Tournament

In a year when adjusting to changing conditions has been the norm, the Alumni Cornhole Tournament was held indoors, with rousing success.

Those who recall the first tourney in 2019 will remember the broiling heat that tested participants. This time, organizers deemed it a “fair-weather” event, meaning rain would equal cancelation, and the forecast for Saturday afternoon was not promising.

Instead of quitting, permission was sought and granted from the folks at Awestruck Ciders for an indoor event. Our thanks to Bryan Birdsall, ‘95, at Awestruck, for making this happen.

Four indoor boards were set up, with several outside. But in a very convenient process of the double-elimination brackets set up by Jeff, ‘82, and Shelley Pendorf, ‘82, all matches were able to be contested indoors. It was anything but quiet: rooting sections helped make this a very popular activity.

Out of more than 20 teams, the top two tandems from 2019 rose to the same status as they approached the finals. This time, though, the one-time runners-up emerged as champions.

Congratulations to the father-son duo of Kevin, ‘85, and Hunter Sowersby, ‘13, for defeating former winners Mike Boyce, ‘84, and Rick Beardslee, ‘02. The Sowersby team earned the $105 first-place winnings, while Boyce and Beardslee collected $65.

Third and fourth places each won $25.

A fun consolation match was held, with Brett Pendorf, ‘07, and Bryan Evans topping Craig Dawson, ‘98, and Darren Martindale, ‘07. Pendorf and Evans donated their share of the money back to SCSAA. In spite of weather and other factors, a great time was had by all.

Combined 1975 -‘76 Reunion Enjoyed by All

For the second time in 15 years, the Class of1976 turned a canceled reunion into a combined celebration.

The 2006 flood caused a 30th reunion to be scratched for ‘76, only to “pal up” for fun with 1977 the following summer. This year, after COVID-19 wiped out its 45th reunion, the Class of 1975 accepted an invitation to join with 1976 grads to celebrate

together and it was a qualified success.

Co-chairs Larry Halbert and Greg Davie planned a simple and casual event, satisfying the need of old friends to enjoy reminiscing and catching up with members of both classes.

A chicken barbecue was held at the VFW. Both groups mingled like the old days and members of each saw classmates who haven’t returned to Sidney in many years.

Many photos were taken, stories were retold and lots of laughs were shared.

While numbers were low (see class pictures), mostly due to the return of pandemic-related concerns, both classes had other members that popped into the VFW or golfed earlier in the weekend. Classmates from 1976 especially enjoyed their annual Thursday night fun golf outing again; it’s become an annual tradition.

Thanks to all who were part of the combined reunion. It was another example of the true Warrior spirit.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY NEEDED The Sidney Central School Alumni Association is seeking someone to assume corresponding secretary duties, beginning January 2023.

This person would become a member of the board of directors and be responsible for picking up all mail and keeping track of dues paid, addresses, deaths, etc. on the database. They would keep track of any correspondence and send out thank-you letters for any donations received.

They would write up the Class Notes section for Reflections from submitted membership forms and print out the labels that go on the Reflections mailing.

The incoming corresponding secretary should be someone residing in Sidney or nearby, so they can pick up mail on a regular basis, though it does not need to be every day.

They should also be willing to help during the annual Alumni Weekend.

Induction Weekend to Include 30th Alumni Basketball Games

A huge anniversary will take place at the high school gym Friday, Nov. 12, as the Sidney Alumni Basketball Association hosts the 30th Alumni Night with two games.

In a happy set of circumstances, despite COVID-19’s grip on canceled events, SABA and SCSAA will join forces during the Sports Hall of Fame’s 18th Induction Weekend.

The HOF dinner and ceremony, scrapped in 2020, set a later date for the 2021 induction. With no active varsity sports in mid-November, the easy solution was to change the normal date of the basketball night to coincide. And basketball is the common sport among all five inductees and the Legacy team this fall. See the SHOF article for details.

The original format of having two games has been reinstated, with a few tweaks since the event’s 1992 debut. Much of the attention this year will be on honoring longtime boys’ coach Mike Brazee, a 1976 graduate and 2020/2021 inductee.

Pre-registration is required for the first time, to ensure special jerseys that give players the number of their choice. As of Oct. 1, the response has been terrific, especially with Lady Warriors. The cost is $25 and can be paid by check, made payable to SABA, or a Venmo payment to founder and chairman Greg Davie, ‘76.

Once popular as a male-only doubleheader – using 35 as the age cutoff between the “old-timers” and “young guns” game – there has been just one game played for the past 10 years.

This time around, the opener at 6:30 will be a co-ed contest, with older men and ladies mixed into two teams. The first half will use a girls’ basketball before switching at halftime to a boys’ ball. Based on per-registration, there are more females signed up to play than ever before.

The young guns game will start after a short Hall of Fame recognition ceremony and will enjoy a unique twist before the night arrives. A Facebook live draft will be conducted a few days before the 12th, with former coaches Brazee and Bob Finnegan choosing sides. This should create some pre-game hype, sure to lead to some all-infun trash talking.

Thanks to several anonymous donations since COVID hit, SABA is solvent and will be able to provide the same $300 annual scholarship it has since June 1993.

Admission will be free, and a post-game alumni social will follow as part of HOF Induction Weekend, starting at 9:00.

Small But Mighty: Alumni Field Hockey #5 is a Success

The fifth Alumni Field Hockey game was a spirited match, where stick skills among former players returned to provide lots of action on a sunny Saturday morning of Alumni Weekend.

Alumni as far back as 1987 (Helen Harris) and as recent as 2021 (Adrienne Paternoster) shared the field. With 12 players, current varsity coach Christine Race decided the game would be a shorter – AKA sideline-to-sideline – field with goalkeepers replaced by large tractor tires serving as goal defenders.

No matter the ground rules, these ladies never stopped. Seven-minute quarters worked well. And it was a scoreless first quarter, until the final minute when goals were scored by both sides. Tiffany Mott Thomas, ‘03, tallied for Team Maroon, followed by Carin Bishop, ‘90, for Team White.

Bishop also scored the last goal of the first half, but that was after three Team Maroon marks. Hannah Wood, ‘14, put in two goals, sandwiching one of Paternoster’s. Maroon led 4-2 at the half.

Only one goal highlighted the third quarter, when Hannah Gray, ‘20, notched

a score, with 41 seconds remaining for Team White.

Two minutes into the final quarter, White scored the equalizer. Team Maroon recovered almost immediately when Mikayla Wakeman, ‘14, and Paternoster found the cage, to complete the scoring for a final score of 6-4, Team Maroon.

Honors after the game went to four players, two a side. Sarah Singlar Lane, ‘07, for the Maroons and Helen Harris for the Whites were named defensive MVPs. Offensive MVPs were Adrienne Paternoster (Maroon) and Carin Bishop (White).

was moved indoors to the home of event sponsor, C.H. Landers Funeral Home.

Chairman Greg Davie, ‘76, made a call to Jeff Bagley, ‘89, at Landers on Saturday afternoon, when the forecast for Sunday morning looked bleak. All attempts were made to pass the word along regarding the venue, though the last-minute change contributed to a smallerthan-normal turnout.

An appreciative audience of about 40 heard musicians Greg Davie, Jeff Doyle, ‘78, and Terry Knight Dundon, ‘77, performed three songs between the reading of lost classmates covering graduation years ending in 0, 1, 5 and 6. Selections included: “Peace in the Valley” as a traditional opening hymn, then “Let It Be” and “Way Over Yonder,” in tribute to the classes of 1970 and 1971, respectively. Last year’s canceled weekend meant a double tribute to 50th anniversary classes in 2021.

It should be noted that the original memorial Davie, ‘76. service in 2002 was held near the flagpole at the high school. That year, “Way Over Yonder” was played by CD on a boombox was the only song heard during the ceremony, held specifically to honor the life of Reggie Reynolds, ‘74.

From then, it was decided to conduct a memorial service for all during each Alumni Weekend.

Eventually, the names of departed members of classes returning for special reunions were read as part of the service.
