Attention Homeowners: Imagine a durable, versatile and attractive patio cover. One that delivers shade on hot days, protects your family from harmful UV rays and keeps your deck and outdoor furniture dry during a rainstorm. Suncoast Enclosures will custom build your louvered roof as an addition to your home/business or as its own free-standing patio cover. Our built-in guttering system effectively channels away rain runoff to prevent flooding and structural damage. The louvers are operated by a hand-held remote which is charged by an efficient solar panel. Open the louvers slightly to increase ventilation, or a full 180 degrees allowing maximum sunlight into your home. Suncoast Enclosures offers a screened-in, outdoor area that allows you to enjoy your deck, pool, spa or patio without the sense of being enclosed in an indoor space.

all Trends for 2016 are flirting on the edge of a 70s revival. From silhouettes, to detailing, to fabrics, this season is a definite throwback to decades–old trends. With single pieces that can layer over last seasons’ fashions and signature pieces, like a go with everything fringed jacket, it’s in your best interest to invest in fashion’s groovy past. Wide leg trousers are layered over a roll neck knit for a fall 70s look, as high waist silhouettes and shirt collar details enhance the revisited retro feel.

A GO TO LOOK IS LAYERING TURTLENECKS AND LONG-SLEEVE TOPS UNDER SLEEVELESS DRESSES, JUMPERS AND CROP TOPS

Micro flare pants and fitted jumpsuits in vibrant colours are another popular style that reflects trends coming full circle. As well oversize jumpers and cinched in waists with belts have made a comeback. Velvet is the go to material of the year and will be found in skirts, blouses and dresses. This soft fabric adds a touch of warmth and glamour to everyday styles and is featured in a range of fall colours. Lace, the eternal classic, gains a stronger presence for this season. The latest version is peek–a–boo lace that is either thick and heavy or sheer and delicate. Both types are perfect to pair with heavy knits and casual tops. For cardigans, the fall statement is chunky knits with sweeping lengths. Feathers and fringes embellish tops, skirts, trousers and dresses, adding interesting textures and movement to simple outfits. Fur, in multi colours, is popular in not only garments like vests and jackets but also is showing up in handbags and jewelry as well.

Plaid is a recurring theme on trend lists for the cooler months. Checks of varying shades and scales, give fall looks added dimension without going over the top. Plaid is being approached in a much cleaner, subtler, muted way, and is being used on everything from outerwear to cocktail dresses. Layering is on trend again this year and a go to look is layering turtlenecks and long-sleeve tops under sleeveless dresses, jumpers and crop tops. Not only is it easy for any body type to pull off, it also allows you to take those slinky slips, glitzy sequins, and low-cut cocktail dresses out in broad daylight. Patchwork denim jackets and cowgirl bell-bottom jeans with raw hems are all the rage as well and can be worn denim on denim. Traditional shapes look chic for this season including A-line mini dresses and longline coats. Blouses feature excessive ruffles, bell sleeves and large flowing fabrics. This is the season for neck adornments. It doesn’t matter if you prefer a skinny silk scarf or a chunky choker — the addition of something around your neck this fall will add a little extra oomph to everything from blouses to cocktail dresses. Whatever trend you choose to add to your wardrobe this season the vibe is all about freedom of expression and being yourself.

YOUR HEALTH

Get Both Your Garden and Yourself In Shape This Fall GARDENING PROVIDES ALL THREE TYPES OF EXERCISE: ENDURANCE, FLEXIBILITY, AND STRENGTH.

I

f you’re a gardener, you already know that the required digging, squatting and heaving can leave your muscles good and sore. But if you add in a few extra moves along the way, you’ll be giving your body an extra workout and cleaning your garden at the same time. Warm up with slow gentle motions. Then ramp up your garden workout with a few lunges as you weed and clean. MAKE YOUR GARDEN CLEAN UP into a structured exercise routine, alternating light activities with heavier ones. Try to rake for a while, then haul things away and then plant your fall flowers. SHOVELING OR TILLING THE DIRT will give your heart a boost and prepare the ground for fall plantings, and not just trees and shrubs. Bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and Irises can all be planted soon. For extra exercise try double digging (going down a foot, turning the soil over, then down another foot, bringing that soil to the top). CLEARING OUT THE RUBBISH that has built up over the summer is a good exercise in itself; the bending, tilling and moving brush from side to side to get underneath provides a good strength training workout. Try raking right-handed 15 times, then left-handed 15 times to ensure that both sides of your body get the same training. Also try exaggerating the raking or digging motion to make it bigger as that involves different muscles. Be sure to finish with some gentle stretches and slower movement and bask in the realization that you have achieved a workout and a clean fall garden.

What is Traditional Feng Shui? Photos Images By Gillies

eng Shui is the unseen reality of our environment. It literally means “wind” and “water”. It is an abbreviation of a whole concept: energy dissipated by wind, collects at the boundaries of water. Our five senses are very much involved in the given environment, however we are greatly affected physically, emotionally, socially, even financially by the unseen forces. Feng shui has more than 6,000 years’ history and it explores how the influences of the earth and cosmos combine to produce energy fields that affect us in many ways. Just like both good and bad events and circumstances can be predicted when enough data is gathered, a Feng Shui practitioner is able to predict certain things about how a property and its occupants will be affected by the environment.

in motion, there is no one way to solve problems permanently, and traditional Feng Shui works with this theory,” explains Carly. The relationship between Feng Shui and your home is like the relationship between you and your family members or coworkers. The relationship can be supportive and nurturing or challenging and cause tension. Feng Shui helps to harmonize the tension and strengthen the support. Feng Shui is known to be helpful in reducing existing problems or preventing something bad from happening. WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE? Naturopathic medicine is an approach to health care that is based on self-healing processes through healthy diet, lifestyle, and natural therapies. It is a combination of evidence-based and natural forms of medicine. HOW DO NATUROPATHIC AND CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE DIFFER? Conventional medicine diagnoses and treats an illness. Naturopathic medicine focuses on the nature of the disease and treats the root cause. In conventional medicine, for example, the treatment for a migraine headache may be a prescription for pain. A Naturopathic Doctor, on the other hand, looks for the underlying cause of the disease. Was there an injury? Hormonal imbalance? Food allergy? Change in lifestyle? The Naturopathic Doctor will then treat the root of the condition. Thus, each patient with a migraine may get a very different health plan. WHAT TRAINING DO NATUROPATHIC DOCTORS HAVE? As with conventional medicine, Naturopathic Doctors require eight years of post-secondary education — a four-year undergraduate degree and a four-year accredited, naturopathic medical degree. Graduates must pass international board examination. Naturopathic Doctors are educated in acupuncture, injection therapies, minor surgery, pharmaceuticals, nutrition,

vitamins and nutrient therapies. They are trained to perform physical exams, read blood work, interpret diagnostic imagery and are able to treat any condition using the best available scientific evidence. WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM SEEING A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR? At Weyburn Naturopathic Medicine, we specialize in treating, digestive concerns, pain and fatigue. PAIN MANAGEMENT Every year, we treat hundreds of patients with knee, back, and shoulder pain. We approach pain management and healing with a whole body perspective. In many cases, we use injection therapies like prolotherapy and acupuncture, which work by stimulating the immune system. ENERGY Low energy has many causes such as gut diseases, medications, hormone imbalances, chronic illness and pain. We focus on the root cause of the fatigue and develop a plan to address it directly. DIGESTIVE OR GUT CONCERNS Many of our patients have chronic gut health concerns as a result of inflammatory diseases like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis as well as general digestive issues. Through diet and blood testing for intolerances and deficiencies, we develop a healthy diet plan that is best suited for each patient. WHAT DOES A TREATMENT PLAN LOOK LIKE? Treatment plans are unique and specifically tailored to each patient. Dr. Bridgman creates a simple and effective plan that is easy to follow. Patients can expect to have a clear understanding of what medicines should be taken and for how long. Dr. Bridgman uses a range of safe and natural treatments such as acupuncture, injection therapies, nutritional supplements and other natural medicines to help his patients achieve optimal wellness. wenty-year old country singer/songwriter Karissa Hoffart grew up on a farm just outside of Minton, Saskatchewan. She’s always had a passion for music and singing which led her to seven years of voice lessons in nearby Plentywood, Montana. As a finalist Karissa was asked to perform on the main stage at the Craven Country Jamboree and at Casino Regina. Karissa became the GX94 Star Search Champion in July of 2015. large iguana stops dead in his tracks as he spots me —we both seek the cool shade cast by a cliff. It’s the dry season in the north province of Guanacaste — dry and hot. But resort guests are not deprived of nature. Cameras are drawn to record a visiting Coati as he casually saunters past the outdoor dining venue of our resort. He casts a look over his shoulder and disappears into the underbrush. The beautiful blue of the Morpho butterfly demands the attention of anyone lucky enough to spot this treasure in the countryside or in this case, a man–made drainage ditch. The unromantic setting is rendered irrelevant; all eyes are on the stunning metallic blue and green color of the wing, only visible while in flight. The butterfly flutters in slow graceful movements up and away. Inland from the Pacific Coast is the lush Monteverde Cloud Forest straddling the Continental Divide. We traverse roads that would rival Saskatchewan’s worst as our van navigates rocks and washouts enroute to the Curi–Cancha Reserve. We quiz our guide “Will we see any monkeys?” The carefully crafted reply was non-committal. Apparently the cloud forest Right Photos by Lorena Squires

is vast and the monkeys had other business to attend to. Just as we hit the road for home, a brightly colored toucan took flight from a tree top and glided without care across the road in front of us. There are no rules in Costa Rica for the wildlife and birds, they present themselves when and where they care to. We continue north to the most spectacular of Costa Rica’s’ volcanos; Arenal. With a perfect conical shape it is almost always

capped with a crown of cloud and steam. The volcanic soil surrounding Arenal is covered in lush forest and grass, a home for many plant, animal and bird species. It was here that we saw our monkeys — a family of howler monkeys out for an evening snack of tender tree branches. In Costa Rica, the only zoo keeper around is Mother Nature herself. Wildlife, nature and the beautiful countryside are the main attractions of this peaceful Central American country.

Headof theBed

6 HEADBOARD STYLES

By Courtney Tait

28    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

With the bed typically serving as the focal point of a bedroom, it’s easy to hone in on such details as duvet covers, sham colours and throw pillows when choosing your decor. But bed style isn’t all in the bedding. Dating back to ancient Egypt, headboards have continued to be an essential element of a wellmade bed, conveying elegance and grandeur — as they did for the pharaohs — or comfort and calm. Here are six distinct styles to get you dreaming.

1

WOODEN

C

lassic and durable, the wooden headboard is always on trend, and for good reason; it works with any decor, blending easily with both traditional and modern accents. Whether you opt for clean, simple lines or an ornate carved pattern, a custom-made wood headboard is the kind of piece that becomes a family heirloom. A popular option in the DIY era is crafting a wall-mounted headboard from salvaged wood. Artistic and ecologically mindful, it creates a relaxed, rustic look that can transform a basic bedroom into a cottage-chic retreat.

2

TUFTED Starting in the 17th century, the upholstered headboard began moving the bedroom in the direction of comfort, rather than status. Its appeal has remained, proving the lure of leaning against cushioned padding while tucked beneath the covers. Queen of the upholstered look is a tufted finish. From cotton and tweed to velvet or leather, the fabric options make this a versatile style that almost anyone can get on board with. Prefer a more streamlined look? Consider panel tufting, with the horizontal lines adding interest while remaining sleek. For an upscale feel, diamond tufting is your best bet, conjuring up the look of a five-star hotel — for the ultimate staycation.

ave you been thinking of replacing your deck, fence, shingles or siding because they are looking weathered, or grungy? The cost to replace these can be quite high, and may not fit in your budget at this time. Pressure Force can provide you with the services to make the exterior of your home look next to new, while saving you money. Through extensive training Aaron Bohnert, owner of Pressure Force, follows the cleaning protocol set out by the American Roofing Manufactures Association. This protocol employs procedures which help protect your roof from harmful UV rays, and mold. The cleaning process uses a low pressure soft wash system vs a high pressure wash so there will not be any damage done to the shingles.

E

With specialized equipment the experts at Pressure Force have the ability to reach taller buildings. A majority of the jobs can be done right from the ground eliminating the extra cost of a lift. Aaron always has the environment and safety at the top of his mind, and having access to the right equipment provides just that. Decks and fences can get covered in a filthy layer of dust, and grime making them look unappealing. Most people think replacing or staining would be the easier way to give them the new look. Pressure Force can get the treated boards looking new again without the high cost of replacement or the time it takes to stain.

CREATING

STRONGER EMPLOYEE CONNECTIONS E

ven the smallest company’s deal with people and being a successful business owner requires having good interpersonal skills. It is important that you build strong relationships — not only with your clients and customers but also with your employees. In fact, your success may hinge on how well you cultivate these relationships.

GIVE THEM RESPONSIBILITY Show your employees you trust them by giving them responsibilities that help them grow and empower them to feel like an important part of the company. Encourage them to gain new skills, competencies and capacities through training and development and promote from within whenever possible.

Studies show that people who feel treated fairly and respected on the job are not only more likely to be motivated at work and go the extra mile for their organization, but they are also more likely to be healthy, have an active lifestyle and feel positive. The following ideas have been shown to increase retention and job satisfaction.

SHOW THEM RESPECT Treat each employee with respect and consideration, regardless of their status within the business. This doesn’t mean that behaviours or errors can’t be corrected but the respect you hold for that individual and their unique talents should always be clear. Employees want to know they are respected as human beings

38    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

IF YOU’D LIKE YOUR EMPLOYEES TO MAKE AND KEEP A LONGTERM COMMITMENT TO YOUR COMPANY, IT IS EQUALLY VITAL THAT YOU GIVE THEM SUFFICIENT REASON TO STAY.

and that the work they do is appreciated. If you fail to recognize their efforts or acknowledge their hard work, they’ll likely start to feel dissatisfied and may start to look elsewhere for the respect they’re hoping to find. THINK ABOUT REVENUE-SHARING Are you able to tie a part of your employees’ wages to the company’s performance? Offering a base pay and then add a part of the company’s revenue and/or profit on top as a performance bonus can increase commitment and motivation for employees. This will not only motivate the employees to work hard, but will align their interests with the company’s revenue and profit goals and will serve as an incentive to stay with the company as it grows. Employees tend to feel more engaged and invested in the company when they receive part of the profit.

outside of their job, and they need to know that you honor and value those priorities as well. If you’d like your employees to make and keep a long–term commitment to your company, it is equally vital that you give them sufficient reason to stay. It takes everyone involved to make a business successful, and as the lead operator in your business, you’re responsible for ensuring that each employee understands his or her importance to your business’s success.

LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO ADD REWARDS Constantly look for ways to reward employees in a way that they feel valued. If an employee values compliments watch for opportunities to sincerely compliment their work in front of others. Perhaps an employee enjoys benefits like free lunches with the boss or after hours get–togethers, then do your best to make those happen when the employee has done something exceptional. Other people find value in small gifts as recognition. If you have an employee who values gifts, purchase small things and make a big deal of presenting it for a job well done. Get to know your employees and discover what makes them feel most valued. Then take the time to watch for opportunities to let them shine and be recognized. Customizing your rewards to match the personalities and values of each individual will play a huge role in raising morale. BUILD IN LIFE BALANCE AND RELAXATION TIME Be generous with time off. Don’t go overboard, but make sure your employees have sufficient time for sick days, family vacations, new babies, family commitments, etc. Remember that it’s their jobs that enable the company to grow, but also remember to allow your employees to enjoy their lives during the time they’re not at work. Employees have many roles and an important life

t’s been two short years since Creekside car wash opened its doors, and owners Ron and Gail Bartlett, Brad and Monique Huebner and Trent and Lisa Huebner couldn’t be more proud of their success. “We certainly believe in a ‘hands on’ approach, as we all seem to be here a lot,” says Monique. “We take turns opening weekends, looking after mechanical issues and supporting staff on busy days, so it keeps the six of us very much involved.” Trent credits Creekside’s manager for successfully ensuring a very inviting and clean atmosphere. “Providing big, bright spacious bays that ensure lots of room to wash, as well as friendly staff, were both very important to our plan,” he says. “We were very happy to get our manager Carrie Reade on board. She has experience managing a car wash so she knew exactly what level of service to provide. Carrie can also answer any questions about our in-bay options including two wax products, three soap applications, two rinse options, vacuums and compressed air. Not knowing the car wash business, except for washing their own vehicles, it took the owners some time to figure out the best layout and use of space. “We added Emerald Water to our front end and soon

we started delivering water to businesses all over Weyburn. We have a unique product in that we offer RO (reverse osmosis) water as well as PH (remineralized) water. Regular RO water has zero minerals in it. The PH water has the good minerals added back in,” explains Lisa. Brad’s favorite area is the mechanical room. “We used the best car wash equipment available”, He adds that the owners were all very happy to use local trades for the building construction and development. “I’m very pleased with how it all came together”. “It’s a fun atmosphere”, Ron says. “I enjoy opening up on weekends. I have a coffee, tinker a bit, and enjoy a quick visit with the early morning washers! We are very proud of how hard our staff works to keep the place clean and day-shift attendant Sam Presto sets the bar high with his customer service and work ethic” The owners all agree that they like the fact that Creekside Car Wash is family owned, a big presence in Weyburn and a first class car wash experience.” We have received terrific support in these first two years from Weyburn and the surrounding area. It is very satisfying to see our regular customers but it is also satisfying to show a new customer how to operate our car wash!” says Gail. BACK IT UP Think of all the things you have saved on your computer’s hard drive; your family photos, your resume or all your children’s school projects. Backing up your files onto an external hard drive or “the cloud” can ensure that even if something happens to your computer, your files and photos are still intact. “Moving your data to the cloud is relatively simple,” says Michelle. “There are many services online to choose from.” Do some research to find the one best suited for you, set up an account and follow the instructions — voila, your files and photos are safe. Helpful websites to learn more about back up are PCWorld. com and PCMagazine.com.

SPEED IT UP Everyone has had the experience of a slow-running computer causing frustration as you wait and wait for it to load and respond. You can help your computer run faster with just a few easy fixes. Uninstall any applications you don’t use through the control panel. Clear out your temporary files and internet search history regularly. Delete old files you don’t need. “These simple steps can improve your computer’s speed,” says Michelle. LOOK FOR IT When you’re on the web, be careful what you click. One wrong click can wreak havoc on your system. “We advise people to avoid downloading apps that ask to add toolbars or send information from your computer,” says Michelle. “Always use trusted sites from legitimate companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Adobe. Plus, you should always read the fine print when you accept terms and conditions. I can’t stress it enough. Read before you agree to anything online,” says Michelle. Saying yes can mean sending packets of information (and/or cookies) from your computer to the app’s website. It may not harm your system but could definitely slow it down.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

CLEAN IT UP An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, even for your computer. You need an anti-virus program to help fend off problems. “Remember that not all anti-virus programs are the same,” says Michelle. “Plus, a paid program isn’t necessarily better than a free one.” Some paid antivirus programs can actually slow you down, and some free options are really good. Do your homework and find a reliable one that works for you. Beware of ransomware. This nasty malware can encrypt your files and forces you to pay a fee to recover them. The most common way it strikes is via phishing email with attachment(s). “It may look legitimate but once you open the attachment or click a link in the message, it releases the infection,” says Michelle. “You can also get it through a download off a website or a free software offer. Always be wary on social media and game sites.” Whatever you do with your computer, stay safe as best you can. “If you get a virus, immediately disconnect any network or wireless connections and your internet connection plus any external usb sticks and external hard drives,” says Michelle. “Immediately take your computer to an expert who can help you sort it all out.”

EXPERIENCE My experience with Refined Weyburn & Area Magazine has been nothing but positive. Showcasing new and different products and evolving services that we offer are easily measured by the instant response we get from customers the moment the magazine is released. The other plus that we`ve noticed is the longevity or shelf life that the magazine has as we consistently have people bringing in the picture from an issue or asking questions about a particular topic we have discussed months after the issue has been released. A personal observation when we visit friends is that we see that the magazine is still on the coffee table being reread and referred to so your advertising has staying power! I would wholeheartedly recommend using this type of medium because it`s easily measurable and has an upbeat modern feel to it that makes it unique. – Al York with York Jewellers

ENGILBERT UY LOVING WHAT HE DOES!

RW: WHAT EXCITES OR INTERESTS YOU ABOUT YOUR CHOSEN FIELD OF BUSINESS? WHAT ENCOURAGED YOU TO FOLLOW THIS BUSINESS PATH?

As part of our Men of Measure feature for this issue, Refined Weyburn chatted with Engilbert Uy about his motivations and passions.

EY: I get to do what I love the most. Providing decent and comfortable shelter for my family is what encourages me in pursuing this business.

RW: WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY?

I’ve always been good at working with my hands. I’ve also always enjoyed constructing, and sometimes, deconstructing objects and restoring them back. It feels natural for me to be in the construction business.

EY: My parents and my father-in-law. I grew up in a family that owns a business. Our parents involved me and my brothers in managing it so we would learn the ropes of the business. Our parents always wanted us to develop business acumen so that wherever we would go, we’d be able to stand on our feet. RW: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG MEN LOOKING TO SUCCEED IN THE WORKPLACE? EY: Plan well, implement and evaluate. Pursue what you believe in and start doing it. There are many obstacles at first and you may fail a lot of times. Stand up when you fall and never throw away the opportunity to learn from your mistakes.

RW: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND HOW YOU MANAGE TO HAVE IT ALL? WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? EY: I moved to Weyburn in 2009 with my wife Kathleen and our eldest daughter Leen Yukkie (7). We now have two more children Eng Yogie (6) and Yuri Zachariah (4). My family loves the outdoors; we usually go camping, boating and traveling. Spending time with my family is important to me.

Caring for Your Herd By Tobie Hainstock Photos Images by Gillies

With locations in Weyburn and Estevan, Prairie Animal Health Centre (PAHC) offers products and professional services to help ensure that your pet or livestock lives a quality life.

P

AHC is pleased to offer a wide range of cattle reproductive services including pregnancy diagnosis via ultrasound, bull semen evaluation, tailored vaccination protocols, on farm and in clinic emergency services and more. The fully equipped large animal clinic allows PAHC to offer calving assistance in a warm, safe environment during the cold southeast Saskatchewan winters. These services are vital to help producers fulfill the common goal of one calf for every cow. “It’s very important to us that the community has a strong supply of happy, healthy local beef,” says Dr. Cory Davis.

PAHC is pleased to offer vaccination protocol to producers. “Vaccination protocol helps ensure the health and viability of your livestock,” states Dr. Davis, “I like to tailor this service according to the needs of each farm. Every producer is different and it’s important to listen to the needs of our clients.”He recommends that producers sit down with their vet and create a specific plan for their herds.

As a result of PAHC’s commitment to the health of your herd, a new ultrasound unit has been obtained that can stage pregnancy from 35 to 120 days. Clients will now be able to sort cows by expectancy date. This allows producers to feed cows according to their gestation, to make appropriate culling decisions and to closely monitor cows close to calving.

Discover the Advantage of Home Based Businesses

H

ome based businesses are making a huge impact in today’s society. Lisa Vick, organizer of Weyburn Special Events recognized an opportunity to help the home businesses owners by joining them together to promote their businesses and their passions. With Lisa owning her own business she realized the best way to get home businesses and their unique products more recognition was to start a craft and trade show of her own. In 2002 Weyburn Special Events started out with one show known as Treasures of Home. They have now evolved and grown to three shows throughout the year; Spring Craft & Trade Show, Festival of Leaves, and Treasures of Home. A lot of planning goes into each and every show as there are now over 60 vendors with products including makeup, jewelry, clothing, food, home décor and more. The growth of the events brings more people into the Weyburn area every year.

y hours got cut; my position is being downsized; my rig hasn’t worked in six months; we are job sharing; the children are all in school now I want to do something for me; I have been doing this for over thirty years I need a change; or, I want to do something I like doing. The reasons are endless and the time is right. Whether you are looking to make a few extra dollars or to replace your income, we are in a time of change. You no longer need a resume instead you need a marketing and business plan. When I started working for myself I just wanted to make enough to pay for my son’s hockey. I had one client. Then another person asked for my services and so on and before long I began turning

away clients as I could not keep up. Soon there was enough money for hockey and better Christmas gifts. I realized that I was making more per hour working for myself than working for someone else and I had freedom. Freedom was what I really wanted. Raising children is hard enough without having to explain to them that you can’t do things with them or for them because you have to work until five. When I did make it to something my phone was always ringing with questions about work. It was a no-brainer that I needed to develop a business of my own. Having been in business before I knew I had to replace my income to feel comfortable and a handful of clients were not going to do that. With the knowledge that I needed between ten — fifteen clients to make a living, I began to build a business plan and stuck to it. Today my business has been of service to more than fifty clients. I just got back from a weeks vacation with my family where we left on Wednesday and came back on the following Thursday. As a working parent my husband and I were only able to coordinate our holidays twice in fifteen years. Do you know what it is like to be able to do that and still pay

the bills without struggle? The gift of time that I have been able to give to my family is priceless. The timing is right now. Do you have skills like plumbing, consulting, computer programming that you need to market or vegetables, honey, jewelry, clothing or art to sell? Do you need to put together a plan? I offer a service to my clients where we put together a business plan. A business plan is a success document. It starts by answering questions like: Do I work from home? Do I need office space or shop space? How do I advertise and what will it cost? How much will it cost to have a telephone? Do I hire employees or contract workers? What should I sell my goods or services for to be competitive and still profitable? The next step to staying successful in business is to stay on top of your bookkeeping and accounting. I am accepting new clients however if you are trying to do this on your own, I will be running classes starting in September for basic bookkeeping and QuickBooks as well as some advanced classes. Check my Facebook page “Ardell Small Business Solutions” for dates and times.

ires must perform in real-life situations. You need to feel confident that the tires you buy will match the driving situations you encounter on a regular basis. Independent tire testers conducted extensive tests to determine how the tires in the core line-up perform in a range of conditions in both summer and winter. All results were analyzed and processed by the testing group and then provided to Kal Tire for sharing with our customers. BRAKING In the braking distance test, a vehicle approached a marked line at a consistent speed and braking distance was measured in metres. They varied the approach speeds by driving surface and by season for two reasons. First, this represents how most Canadians would normally drive on that surface in each season. Second, testing in both seasons, winter and summer, provides an indication of how a tire's performance will be affected by road temperature.

We Test Tires So You Don’t Have To

CORNERING The cornering test demonstrates the lateral traction capabilities of the tire over a range of surfaces from dry to icy pavement, in both summer and winter. To test cornering performance, a vehicle was driven in a radius circle and speed was slowly and progressively increased until the tire could no longer hold the corner and would lose traction. Since road surface temperatures can affect the cornering performance of a tire, the cornering tests are completed in all weather conditions including dry, wet and icy pavement, and gravel roads. Slush cornering was tested with a corner set up with 5-7 cm of slush consistent throughout. Slush was raked in between vehicle tests to keep conditions consistent. The vehicle was driven around the corner until traction loss was observed. ROAD NOISE The road noise of a tire was measured with a decibel meter on a marked stretch of road at a set speed. Using a decibel meter, the peak decibel level was recorded for each tire. As road temperatures increase or decrease, road noise generally increases and decreases as well. HYDROPLANE RESISTANCE Hydroplane resistance was measured with repeated runs through a puddle that was maintained at a 4 cm deep. Starting at 80 km per hour, the speed of the vehicle was increased in 5 km per hour increments

MOTORING

over repeated runs until the point where the tires lost traction or the vehicle reached 100 km per hour. How a tire resists hydroplaning can be significantly influenced by the temperature of the standing water and the road surface. MUD AND SLUSH STRAIGHT LINE ACCELERATION Mud acceleration was measured with trucks accelerating from a standing start in a pit of mud to a marked finish line. The time to cover the 6 metre distance was captured for each tire. Straight line stability on slush was measured by accelerating the vehicle through a large patch of loose slush and snow until traction loss occurred. SEVERE SERVICE SYMBOL To ensure you are getting All-Weather tires be sure to check for the Government of Canada approved symbol on your tires. Since the test results are independent and objective, Canadians can confidently review the tire testing results to help determine which tire is best suited for the roads and road conditions they will likely encounter. From dry pavement to slush to gravel, we have the test results to help you find the best tire for your needs. Kal Tire, Weyburn, has certified technicians that are now SGI Accredited to do Saskatchewan Safety Inspections, and also specialize in leveling and lift kits.

Knight Dodge customer, Treva Tollefson, had difficulty getting in and out of her truck. Rather than finding an alterative vehicle, Brad Pierson, Dealer Principal at Knight Dodge, suggested adding power folding running boards to ease her ability to step in and out of her truck. “Making this small adjustment to my vehicle made my day-to-day use so much easier and more enjoyable,” states Tollefson.
