Attention Homeowners: Imagine a durable, versatile and attractive patio cover. One that delivers shade on hot days, protects your family from harmful UV rays and keeps your deck and outdoor furniture dry during a rainstorm. Suncoast Enclosures will custom build your louvered roof as an addition to your home/business or as its own free-standing patio cover. Our built-in guttering system effectively channels away rain runoff to prevent flooding and structural damage. The louvers are operated by a hand-held remote which is charged by an efficient solar panel. Open the louvers slightly to increase ventilation, or a full 180 degrees allowing maximum sunlight into your home. Suncoast Enclosures offers a screened-in, outdoor area that allows you to enjoy your deck, pool, spa or patio without the sense of being enclosed in an indoor space.

W

hat a beautiful time of year! I love seeing the vibrant colours of the leaves all around us. It’s always exciting seeing local businesses get ready for the holidays. With new items arriving daily make sure to stop in frequently. We at ReFined want to take the opportunity at this time of year to let the farmers in our area know how much we appreciate their hard work and the countless hours they put in. With the weather cooling off it’s the perfect time to curl up with a pumpkin spice latte and read the latest issue of ReFined Weyburn & Area. On the cover you will notice the brand new Southeast College building. We’re excited to be featuring the new facility, as it is a wonderful asset for our community. I recommend checking out their grand opening October 6th to see for yourself. This issue of ReFined brings a lovely array of fall inspired recipes. One of my families’ favourite recipes is in the wedding feature, “The Best Wedding Cupcakes.” This recipe is tried and true, used at my wedding, as well as my sister’s wedding. The wedding feature showcases all of the unique local businesses you have the opportunity to work with during this exciting time in your life. Try using nature to inspire your autumn decorating by using pumpkins, gourds, wheat sheaves and pinecones. Have fun surprising the children coming to your home on Halloween by dressing in a costume or wearing a mask. With Thanksgiving around the corner it reminds us to give back and be grateful. Give to those in need by filling a food basket to donate to a local charity. Any contribution you make will be welcome. If you have little ones, this is a great activity to let them help with. It’s an opportunity to teach them to be thankful for their blessings.

Make Your Special Day A Reflection of Who You Are

STYLE & BEAUTY

T

hemed weddings are growing in popularity and for good reason as they provide the ultimate opportunity for a bride and groom to showcase their personalities and their love for something special to them. Focusing on interests that are unique and planning a wedding day around a specific theme typically leads to an unforgettable experience for both the couple and their guests. Honing in on a definite vision and theme for your nuptials makes it easier to pull together your flowers, invitations, color palette, menu, music and more… The key to successfully personalizing your “I do’s” is to incorporate things that will remind people of you, whether it’s a color you love, a special song, or a theme created feeling. To choose your theme, think of something meaningful to you and your significant other — what are your hobbies? Are you more of a fun or serious couple? Do you prefer things to be more elegant or edgy? Consider your venue and how you can “set the stage” for your day. Introduce your theme early with invitations and carry it through into the decorations, clothing choices, food, music and party favours.

Here are some popular themes that you can twist to fit your personalities: VINTAGE WEDDING THEME Almost all wedding magazines are full of vintage inspiration, and ideas can be found everywhere on the web, making creative inspiration for your vintage wedding day easy to find. Think of sequins, lace and pearls, a muted color palette with pastel shades of every hue, or consider metallic/sequins colours for your decorations and bridesmaid dresses. If you’re going the vintage route, lace is a must. Look for a gown with a modern design and vintage material or silhouette. Vintage table centres can range from Victorian bird cages and antique lanterns to classic, tall silver candelabras which create soft elegant lighting!

RUSTIC WEDDING THEME Rustic wedding themes continue to be a strong choice, especially for rural weddings. Besides the rustic details we love such as lace, burlap and barn wood, brides can also choose gemstone tones, lights and candles for a romantic rustic look. The common elements of a rustic wedding are using a natural landscape, including wood in multiple ways and incorporating pieces that look like they could exist in your home or garden. Consider mason jars or barn wood inspired centerpieces and accessories to complete the rustic look. ROMANTIC WEDDING THEME Think of lush wedding decorations and the use of nature, including greenery, table runners and wedding arches. If you’re going with this theme, flowers mean romance so more is best when it comes to florals. Use traditional romantic styles for dresses and go with a white or pale pink theme with silver or gold accents for decorating. FAIRY-TALE WEDDING THEME Enchanted Forest (or Secret Garden) weddings are the latest trend for couples seeking a themed wedding with lots of romantic touches. Although the prevalent colours are earthy and rich; soft floral colours like bluebell, lilac, or pale yellow add to the magic. Imagine an abundance of greenery and flowers with rich accent colours, tree trunk slice centrepieces, golden glittering candles and jewel-toned table runners and matching chair ties. Think of “princess” and jewel coloured inspired dresses and Prince charming accents and your theme will come together. Ideas are endless and can include a tribute to a music group, a movie or a travel destination. The key is to make it a reflection of your personalities, your styles and your life connections.

Cherish your special memories forever

with custom made jewellery from York Jewellers

"Al and his team were awesome to work with! I had a specific idea of what I wanted for an engagement ring and they were able to create exactly what I wanted from scratch. If something wasn't quite how I wanted, it was no problem to change it. You can tell that Al genuinely cares about what you want and goes above and beyond to make sure that's what you get. So of course the end result was exactly what I was hoping for. I would definitely recommend York's for any jewellery needs, whether it be in store or custom work!" -Kevin Morrison

Let us help you create personalized custom jewellery, whether it’s an old piece made new or from a vision. We can help! When it comes to engagements and weddings, this is a once in a lifetime memory. Choose a one of a kind ring for your one of a kind love. The custom design allows you to stand apart from anyone else and make those special moments become a fairy tale. Come down to York Jewellers and let us help you turn a one of a kind piece of jewellery into a memory that will last forever. -Ryan York (CAD/CAM Designer)

T

he sky’s the limit when it comes to custom jewellery, from a set of earrings to an elegant engagement ring for your fairy tale ending! I am able to help a client take the idea in their mind and turn it into a memory they will keep forever. We have a lot of clients that bring in old jewellery that belonged to loved ones. Often they do not like the look of the pieces or don’t wear them, but they don’t want to get rid of them. What is the best option? Turn it into a custom piece, we take all the stones and gold from your jewellery and turn it into a brand new design that they will love and wear. This keeps all the sentimental value of a loved one’s jewellery, but turns it into a more modern piece that suits your personal style!

The first step in custom design is the consultation. In this step, we sit down with the client to discuss ideas and determine what they ultimately want in a piece of jewellery. Once we have the ideas, I start working on my CAD/CAM program where I create 3D designs. I then create high resolution renderings of the pieces I design so I can add any colour of metal as well as any colour of stone ensuring that the picture looks exactly as the final product will. We then get our client to come back in and look at the drafts I have done and let us know what they like or what they would like to change. Once we have a design approved, we have our manufacturer start the building process which generally takes anywhere from two to three weeks.

Over the years, Al and his staff at York Jewellers have helped Darren choose beautiful gifts for me including watches, bracelets, earrings and my engagement ring. The quality has been excellent and the service is always fantastic. Recently we used their custom design service to create 3 beautiful original pieces from jewellery we inherited from Darren's mom. Al designed two rings, a pendant and earrings that are absolutely beautiful and will be treasured by myself and our daughters for years to come. Al and his staff truly make you feel welcome and are always eager to help. -Carmen Sterling

aria Ursu and Kendra Johnson at Silver Rose Tanning & Hair Salon in Weyburn vow to have you and your attendants stunningly styled on your wedding day!

On your special day, Maria and Kendra will be there with you – at your home or hotel, in Weyburn or elsewhere – to give you and your party classy up-dos, intricate braids or cascading curls.

Feeling fabulous for your wedding begins a few months in advance with regular tanning sessions and laser hair removal treatments to leave you silky smooth all over. “I had five laser hair removal treatments with Kendra and 98% of my hair is gone!” exclaims Whitney Rutten. “The slight discomfort was worth the awesome reward of not shaving.”

“On our daughter’s wedding, Maria and Kendra arrived at our house,” says Carole Morris. “They worked magic on our hair, making us feel beautiful. The bride’s up-do was especially pretty and romantic, exactly as she had envisioned. Easy-going yet professional, they made everyone feel extra special and ‘wedding ready’.”

For eyes that simply pop in photos and pretty fingernails to slide that gorgeous ring over, Silver Rose offers manicures and sleek brows. Sleek brows combine hair extensions with 3D textured gel to create a fuller look that lasts 2-4 weeks.

Get that wow look you’ve dreamed of on your wedding day with help from Maria and Kendra at Silver Rose.

Handsome hair begins before your wedding day. Maria and Kendra use Olaplex to treat damaged hair, making it feel awesome again. Next, they will give you an expert colour and cut.

THE ALLURE OF

Mexico By Tammy Biblow

M

exico is one of the most beautiful countries in the world; but one of the most controversial as well. A lot of travellers will say “I will never go to Mexico, it is unsafe.” In reality that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are many statistics that speak to the safety of travelling to Mexico and information is available to help you make a conscientious travelling decision. Two of the more popular tourist areas of Mexico are detailed below: RIVIERA MAYA Riviera Maya is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Mexico, with expansive stretches of powdery white sand lapped by the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Spend the day at a luxury beach club where you can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, aquatic sports, spa services and a variety of modern amenities. You’ll find some of the best features in the resort destination of Playa del Carmen, a friendly tourist town where you’ll also discover the Riviera Maya’s top shopping, dining and nightlife. The Riviera Maya is one of the world’s top destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling. An expansive coral reef system extending just off the coast is home to an amazing variety of marine life including colorful tropical fish, manta rays, dolphins and whale sharks. Scuba diving and snorkeling in the Riviera Maya is not limited to the ocean. You can also go snorkeling and cave diving in the many cenotes (underground sink holes) that are unique to this area. The Caribbean side of Mexico is a must see! THINGS TO CHECK OUT: • • • •

PUERTO VALLARTA On the Pacific side of Mexico, Puerto Vallarta reigns as one of Mexico’s most popular winter destinations because of its great diversity and almost perfect climate. Along with golden beaches, mountains and jungles you’ll discover modern amenities and creature comforts. In short, Puerto Vallarta is a very simple and affordable paradise that is appealing to just about everyone. Puerto Vallarta’s renowned Malecón (Boardwalk) runs from the Romantic Zone to the start of the Hotel Zone. Here you’ll find a whimsical collection of bronze sculptures, including the town’s iconic seahorse. Further north are the Hotel Zone and Marina where many resorts and restaurants are located. Travel across a modern bridge and you move from the State of Jalisco into Nayarit, home to the rapidly developing Riviera Nayarit with charming towns such as Bucerias and Sayulita and a host of resorts. The locals are happy to welcome an average of 3.7 million visitors per year to their town. You are always encouraged to practice your Spanish but pretty much everyone can communicate with you in English. Once you get away from the beach, Puerto Vallarta’s hilly cobblestone streets seem to merge into the green foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. I doubt that you will need to visit the gym while visiting; you’ll get plenty of exercise just navigating up and around town. THINGS TO CHECK OUT: • • • •

3. Foundation is next. I like to airbrush — this gives the appearance of a flawless complexion. Airbrushing is fast, light, and lasts all day.

8. Now apply eyeliner. I recommend using a pencil on top then going over it with liquid. I only use a pencil on the bottom to keep it subtle.

4. A simple way to contour is to use bronzer. If your face is square, contour all four corners and apply bronzer lightly on the apple of cheeks. If your face is heart shaped, apply bronzer to outer sides of your forehead, sweeping along your temple and under your cheekbones, stopping directly under your cheekbone. If your face is round, contour the sides of your face and highlight your forehead and chin. If your face is long, contour your forehead and chin. If you have a triangle-shaped face, contour from sides of your cheekbones to the bottom of your jawbone, highlighting your forehead and chin.

9. If you add anything to enhance your eyebrows, do this now. For a natural look, take a pencil and start by sweeping it from the outside corner working your way inward, directly and lightly on the hairs, be careful not to touch it to your skin.

5. Next, apply blush. I only apply blush to the apples of the cheeks because it makes you look happy. 6. Now is the time to do your lips. Use whatever you are comfortable with — lipstick, gloss, liner, or a combination. 7. Time for the eyes. Use a lighter base shadow, and then a darker shadow to contour and accentuate. To achieve one of my favourite looks, choose three shades. I like a soft brown as your base all across lower lid, a dark plum from the middle of your eye to the outer corner, and a lighter brown or soft white under brow, in the corner of your eye close to your nose, and on the highest part of your cheekbone. This opens your eyes and creates what I call a butterfly effect.

10. And finally, use finishing powder to reduce shine and ensure everything stays in place. Gently and lightly dust it along your T-zone. 11. For a fuller lash effect, apply mascara to both the top and bottom of the lashes. Begin by looking down and applying to the top lashes in a rolling, sweeping motion. It’s important to coat every eyelash to blend false lashes and achieve a natural look! 12. Always feel good about yourself — true beauty comes from within. If you book your wedding makeup with me, you will receive a complementary shine control powder to apply during the day, and a lip gloss. All bridesmaids also receive a gloss. What is a Doula? Guiding You on Your Path of Parenthood newborn behaviours and appearance, sleep habits, basic feeding, bathing and dressing assistance;

Jocelyn Henry

Owner/Doula Passion For Family Arcola SK 306.495.7090 icing.henry@gmail.com Facebook.com/PassionforFamily

D

oula (‘doo-la’) is a Greek word meaning “woman servant”. Today, a doula refers to someone who offers emotional and physical support and education to a woman, her partner and other children before, during and after childbirth. The doula’s role is to assist the family with preparing for and carrying out childbirth and postpartum plans. During the labour, the doula’s role is to facilitate communication between the mother, her partner and her health care team. She takes time to preserve the mother’s birth memories through photos and video, with recognition that the birth is a key life experience the mother will remember forever. After the birth, during postpartum, a doula provides special care to the entire family and ‘nurtures’ the family and ‘mothers the mother’ to make the postpartum period go as smoothly as possible. Doulas are trained to be an extra set of caring nurturing hands during one of the most precious times of a mother’s

life. They are educated to be observant, professional and empowering while also being supportive, patient, nurturing and last but not least, fun! WHAT DOES A DOULA DO? A birth doula tends to these tasks: •

Teaching comfort measures for childbirth;

Providing emotional support of the individual’s birthing choices;

Educating families on childbirth processes;

Offering encouragement and positive affirmations;

Providing an interview and two prenatal appointments;

Attendance at the entire birth and one follow-up appointment.

Postpartum, a doula offers: •

Assessment of family needs;

Recommendations and referrals;

Emotional support of the individual’s parenting choices;

Encouragement and positive affirmations;

Newborn care and hands-on education including information on

YOUR HEALTH

Breastfeeding counselling and advanced breastfeeding education including establishing a good latch and milk supply, comfortable positions for mom and baby, pump education and proper milk storage;

Preparation of bottles and information on washing/cleaning/sterilizing;

Cord and circumcision care;

Assistance with routine establishment;

Organization of the nursery and light house work;

Sibling education and transition as well as care of older siblings;

Shopping list planning, food shopping and meal preparation.

What are the proven benefits of having a doula be a member of your prenatal/ maternity team? A doula can help customize a birth plan for the mother as well as provide customized prenatal and postpartum education. Use of a doula often results in a reduction of fear and anxiety about the birth and journey ahead. Women who use doulas have shorter labours on average, reduced risk of unnecessary interventions, reduced use of pain medication, and reduced chances of an unplanned caesarean birth. Doulas are trained to help with breastfeeding and using a doula means an increased chance of breastfeeding being successful. Mothers who choose a doula almost always have increased feelings of satisfaction about the birth, and a reduced incidence of postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression. Families end up being more healthy and successful when being nurtured by a doula.

NATURAL HEALING is about taking control of your body, mind and spirit. For thousands of years, people have used the power of crystals to release mental, physical and spiritual blockages throughout the body. On a cellular level, our bodies are naturally receptive to the vibrations of crystals as they transmit, reflect, store light and receive energy. Crystals placed directly on the body, have a powerful vibratory effect that flows from the crystal to you. Crystals can be used as an energy tool to help the thoughts of our consciousness connect with our body. eet the Fitzgerald’s, a family group featuring threetime Grand Master Fiddle Champions and multi-award winning step dancers, Tom, Kerry, and Julie Fitzgerald. They are joined by their parents Pam and Paddy. The Fitzgerald’s began their touring careers ten years ago with the “Stars for Saskatchewan Concert Series”. Weyburn was one of the tour stops at that time and the audience then ‘loved’ their performance! Joining the siblings on guitar and lead vocals is Nate Douglas (guitarist for The Next Generation Leahy). The band presents a program of music and dance which reflects their distinct Canadian culture-namely the rich tradition of Canadian old-time fiddling and OttawaValley step dancing.

34    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

This family’s musical journey began early in life as they studied the unique style that evolved with Irish, Scottish, and French immigrants. Over time, they have developed their art form to an eclectic program, blending traditional jigs and reels, driving Celtic arrangements, jazz standards, bluegrass, French Canadian, pop, and show-stopping Ottawa Valley step dancing. They have broadened their horizons through other dance forms, including tap and Irish. The siblings continue to push boundaries by fusing traditional and modern styles of fiddle and dance to create their own unique sound and style. Their creativity and passion for experimentation has led them to compose original tunes and arrangements.

FOCUS ON FAMILY

It is a rare combination of exceptional musicianship and energetic dancing, audience interaction, evident love of performing, and genuine sibling connection that resonates with audiences of all ages and makes this a truly unforgettable experience.

TIM HORTONS IN WEYBURN New Owners • New Flavours • New Look By Tonya Lambert Photos Images by Gillies

W

e’ve all fantasized about winning the lottery and the fabulous things we would do with our windfall. However, not many of us set about finding other ways to make that dream a reality. Nonetheless, this is just what Joanne did.

“What would you do if you won a million dollars?” a co-worker asked Joanne Carisse. “I would buy a Tim Hortons,” the double-double addict jokingly responded

All day, Joanne’s mind kept drifting back to the thought of running her own Tim Hortons. She and her husband Tom were huge fans of the well-known Canadian institution, specifically selecting each new home as they were transferred around the country from military base to military base so that it was in close proximity to the local Tim Hortons. When Joanne got home that night, she spoke with Tom about her idea. They did some online research and before

going to bed that night, they had submitted an application to operate a franchise. A year-and-a-half later, the Carisse’s names came to the top of the list and, with their younger daughter Morgan; they packed their bags and moved to Weyburn in May of 2015. Their older daughter Selena, who attends university in Saskatoon, joins them at the café in the summers. “I tell people that I bought the franchise for the all-you-can-drink coffee buffet!” says Joanne, only half-jokingly. “Tim Hortons’ coffee is the best! And it goes so well with their sun-dried tomato bagels.” September saw the return of the café’s fall flavours and a wide array of Pumpkin Spice treats. Look for their heavenly chocolate éclairs rumoured to be coming back soon for a limited time! Another annual fall favourite in Weyburn is Tim Hortons’ Smile Cookie Days, which occurred in mid-September. This year’s proceeds went to Family Place to support all their great local programming. Joanne, Tom and their staff would like to thank everyone who came down and purchased a cookie to support this very worthwhile organization. Altogether, $6,720 was raised for Family Place. This is one of the great things about Tim Hortons – there is always something new to try. They recently added both Greek and Caesar salads to the menu along with a number of delicious grilled wraps. Not only will you find new tempting treats at Tim Hortons but you will also discover a new look. One of the first projects which the Carisse’s undertook when they took over the Tim Hortons was to do extensive renovations to both the interior and exterior of the building. From the welcoming brick façade to the warm freshly painted walls and new furniture, you will enjoy meeting friends and family for a cup of coffee at the new and improved Tim Hortons. Stop by and check it out. You will be glad you did.

Pumpkin Muffins INGREDIENTS Muffins 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cloves

1 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking soda 4 large eggs 2 cups sugar

2 cups pumpkin puree 1¼ cups vegetable oil Filling 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 cup powdered sugar

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 and spray a muffin tin with cooking spray. Prepare the filling by combining the cream cheese and powdered sugar in a medium bowl and mixing well until blended and smooth. Transfer filling to a piping bag fitted with a piping tip. (just a regular round piping tip will do fine) Prepare the muffin batter. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, pumpkin pie spice, salt and baking soda; whisk to blend. In the bowl of an electric mixer combine the eggs, sugar, pumpkin puree and oil. Mix on medium-low speed until blended. With the mixer on low speed, add in the dry ingredients, mixing just until incorporated. Fill muffin tins ⅔ full with muffin batter. Next add the filling. Poke the piping tip into the middle of each muffin batter-filled tin. Squeeze out about 1-2 tablespoons of filling into the batter. (Just guess, it doesn’t need to be exactly 2 tablespoons, just enough to fill the center of the muffin) Bake for 20-25 minutes until a toothpick comes out mostly clean. Allow to cool on a wire rack. Store in airtight container at room temperature.

LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR

Holiday Decorating

T

o get started explore your decorating options. Look around your home and brainstorm new and different places to decorate. Choose two or three prominent places and take down what you normally display there. Then start fresh and unencumbered and dress the area in holiday style. The trick to making your holiday decor feel like home is to inject your personal style into the details. KEEP IT SIMPLE: Unfussy decorative items such as a few candles, sprigs of mistletoe and pretty Christmas linens are sometimes all that’s necessary to spread holiday cheer. FRESH AND NATURE INSPIRED: Nothing says “Christmas” quite like fresh greenery. Arrange fresh pine in baskets; layer grasses atop cupboards and along mantels or weave garland and branches around decorative Christmas figurines. One poinsettia at the hearth is a classic holiday touch; staggering three or more around the fireplace makes a statement. Pinecones, candles, seasonal fruits and lights are also great go-to accents. TIMELESS TRADITIONS: Reserve prominent spots in your home for your most treasured Christmas heirlooms so that they get the special attention they deserve. Decorate with vintage glass ornaments and holiday items gifted to you by friends and family. You and your loved ones will cherish the memories as you see them displayed. COLLECTABLES THEME: Whether you like Santa’s, snowmen, nutcrackers or Christmas village collectibles, decorating your spaces in a unified theme

AT HOME

creates cohesiveness that draws attention to your special collections. COLOUR THEMES: Stick with a single colour or colour combination. Plan Christmas decorations to work with your existing decor, or opt for a traditional palette of rich reds and forest greens and carry the colours and theme throughout the house with small touches to keep it flowing. Or go with a blue and silver look and add sparkle with metallic silver ribbon in centerpieces and displays. Swapping out your everyday throw pillows with holiday pillows is a simple and effective touch. Whether you have a fireplace with stockings, a decorated Christmas tree, a colorful lighting installation or a creative message on one of the walls, your home will be warmer and more intimate when the atmosphere genuinely reflects your style and individuality. Once you have “decked the halls” make it a tradition to take time over a cup of hot chocolate or apple cider to appreciate the beauty you have created and reflect on the old and the new memories you are creating. Happy decorating!

SOUTHEAST COLLEGE Agile & Adaptive

“E

ducation is a key component of economic development and growth,” explains Dion McGrath, president and CEO of Southeast College. “Knowing this, we are always looking for ways to enhance our students’ learning experience and opportunities. This is why we are so pleased with our new 36,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art teaching facility.” The new college facility is attached to Weyburn Comprehensive School and the Cugnet Centre. Funded by the provincial government, the impressive new training centre cost $15 million to build. “Our new facility is very student-focused,” says Sheena Onrait, Manager, Marketing & Communications. “A lot of thought and energy went into planning the facility. There is a great centralized student area on the main floor and a dual purpose computer lab. For students in the practical nursing program, there is a lab which simulates a hospital room, while our hairstylists will train and work out of a salon-like lab with upgraded lighting, work stations and an exterior entrance for clients.”

FOR OVER 40 YEARS, SOUTHEAST COLLEGE HAS ADAPTED TO THE EVOLVING NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE, BUSINESSES AND INDUSTRIES WITHIN THE REGION PLENTY OF PROGRAMS Nearly 6,000 students attend the Southeast College’s four campuses and two learning centres each year. They participate in a wide variety of programs, from completing high school and learning English to finishing their first year of university or trade school. “The college offers a broad range of opportunities,” explains McGrath. “We are always looking for innovative ways to be responsive to labour market demands. We do this by building relationships and having conversations with members of the community, business and industry.” It was in response to the needs of industry that Southeast College developed the Introduction to Standard Telecommunication Wiring program. This new program, developed in partnership with SaskTel, is designed to train new telecom installers in the latest industry standards, including technology as advanced as the splicing of fiber optic lines. With the downturn in the energy sector, the college responded by constructing an industry endorsed and designed electrical lab with help from Western Economic Diversification. This has enabled them to be the only college in the province to offer level two construction electrician training. “Enrollment in our trades programs has gone up in recent years,” says McGrath, “as people look to diversify their training and skill sets.” Another area into which the college is looking to expand is precision agriculture. “Agriculture is doing well,” says McGrath, “but the equipment needed to operate a farm is becoming increasingly high tech and complex. You need training to be able to run these big machines.” This past spring, the college piloted a lead sprayer program on their Moosomin campus. This was made possible by partnerships with Maple Farm Equipment, John Deere and Bayer Crop Science. As well, the college is currently working with the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities to create a program that will

provide professional development training for employees of rural municipalities. “This is a huge undertaking but a promising one in which the college set out to help solve an issue that SARM identified,” states McGrath. For over 40 years, Southeast College has adapted to the evolving needs of the people, businesses and industries within the region, contributing over $19 million dollars to the local GDP. It has done so not only by expanding its offerings but also by always looking for new ways for students to learn. This has resulted in a combination of in-house classes, online courses and live streaming options. Everything is done to provide the people of southeast Saskatchewan with lots of local educational training options. “There is a huge cost saving to learning where you live, both for individuals and for employers,” explains Onrait. “Students can save up to $10,000 by taking the first year of university while living at home,” adds McGrath. FUNDING THE FUTURE As a leading college, Southeast College takes student support seriously. The college awarded nearly $200,000 in entrance bursaries and scholarships last year. Student funding is largely a local effort with many businesses and organizations donating dollars and the provincial government often matching the money raised by the college.

The Swing for Scholarships Golf Tournament, a major fundraising effort, has been held in Weyburn every September for the past 18 years. It has proven to be such a phenomenal success that the college has expanded its efforts to include June tournaments in Estevan and Moosomin. The college staff believes in supporting students and annually contribute funds to the TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) Scholarship which is awarded to a student who has completed adult education through the college and gone on to post-secondary training. This $6,000 scholarship will be awarded at the college’s grand opening ceremony featuring President Dion McGrath, Board of Directors Governor Judy Jones and Minister of Advanced Education Bronwyn Eyre. Join the staff and students on October 6 as they celebrate the opening of the new college. Tour the facility and enjoy the barbeque, with all proceeds going towards student funding.

A Salute to Farmers

A

griculture has always been a cornerstone of the prairie economy. From early morning chores and late night checks on animals to extended hours in the field putting crops in and taking them off these producers work far more than 8 – 5. Hard working Saskatchewan men and women have long served as stewards of the land and as nurturers of livestock to ensure that people worldwide have enough to eat. Producers work with researchers to improve farming and ranching practices and to continually strive for better and more efficient ways to do things. It’s hard to put into words the many hats a farmer wears, but an excerpt from the legendary speech by Paul Harvey says it best.

… God said, “I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to tame lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-combed pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadow lark. It had to be somebody who’d plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard week’s work with a five-mile drive to church.” “Somebody who’d bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son says he wants to spend his life ‘doing what dad does.’” So God made a farmer.

T

ake a drive southeast of Halbrite, and you will note the vast maturing soybean trial plots situated not far from the family home of Brad and Roslyn Eggum. These plots allow Eggum Seed Sales, which they own and operate, to supply customers with local agronomic data. Eggum exited a 15-year career with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in 2003 to farm full-time and to work in commission seed sales. In 2008, Brad officially established Eggum Seed Sales (ESS) and in 2010, ESS expanded to provide custom treating. Through the years, the main focus of ESS has shifted to soybeans. Eggum Seed Sales utilizes third party researchers in conjunction with the trial plots, in order to gather current, relevant data concerning the different varieties of soybeans that can be grown, optimum planting conditions and how to maximize yields. In August, Eggum hosted ESS’s major plot tour where invitees were treated to breakfast, then a poker derby tour at the main plot site. “Similar to a snowmobile

poker derby, each person goes site to site, receiving a card at each site and the highest hand at the end wins a prize. We like to do something a little different,” says Eggum of their derby-style day. The main plot tour is important to ESS. “The reason we do what we do is two-fold - it’s for ourselves, to help us understand the plants and the different varieties so that we can make good recommendations on what variety to grow and how to grow any selected variety in the best way possible,” explains Eggum. “It is also for the customers to get a good hands-on feel and look at the crops.” The data also allows ESS to concentrate on growing the soybean industry locally. “Soybean is a very good fit for our area as soybeans are a crop that grows like a pulse crop and produces oil. The highest value of the crops we grow in Western Canada have come from oil seeds and pulses in the last 20 years. Soybeans have both of these components in one plant,” says Brad. Thirty bushels per acre is the long term soybean production average on the Eggum farm. “These are reasonable long term targets as the varieties that were grown were not as adapted as what is coming out now,”

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

clarifies Eggum. “In the next five years they anticipate continued improvement on the soybean varieties suited to Western Canada.” On top of the ongoing agronomical data, ESS works closely to support their customers by visiting their fields to assess the plant emergence and population. “We try to be out a minimum of twice to each field but some fields need some more management and we will spend more time,” says Eggum. Come fall, the trial plots will be opened to the public which allows producers the chance to see how things are podding and to observe what kind of maturity the plants have. Contact Brad, or co-worker Chelsea Toles, to allow them to answer any questions you may have.

Shady Lane Farms Inc. ubsequently, it is no wonder that 10 miles south of Weyburn, Shady Lane Farms Inc. experiences success and satisfaction while being a productive family run farm led by Darren and Carmen Sterling, along with their daughters Shastidy and Brooke. One quick talk with Carmen and it is obvious how they have grown Shady Lane Farms Inc. to the 7,400 acres they operate today and why they were the prestigious recipients of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce Golden Sheaf Award in 2015. “We are passionate about it, passionate to the point that Darren has had other opportunities but stuck to farming,” expressed Carmen. “Darren’s grandpa was a farmer; his dad was a farmer, and Darren knew he wanted to be a farmer. Early on, along with farming, Darren worked on the drilling rigs, however there came a time when he was busy enough to exclusively farm,” comments Carmen. Darren’s love of farming spills over to his daughters who have both been happily involved on the farm. Shastidy enjoys helping with equipment, while Brooke prefers to cook meals to provide for her family, their two full-time workers and seasonal staff at harvest time. Both recently left the farm while pursuing postsecondary education, but Carmen believes, thanks to Darren, the love for their family farm runs deep so they will always return or help in some capacity. “When you are short on

labour, you need extra help which our girls provide but he isn’t persuading them to work for us. Instead he wants them to learn about everything involved and decide if they want to be a part of things,” explained Carmen. The passion of the Sterling’s also spills off the field into the community where they support STARS ambulance, local sports teams like the Weyburn Red Wings and surrounding communities through events and fundraisers. Darren often downplays the work he puts in day after day at Shady Lane Farms Inc. by saying things like “I am just a farmer, I just farm,” mentioned Carmen, so it is important to her and her daughters that people are recognizing what truly makes their farming operation effective. “Darren has always made sure that I know what is going on and he’s always encouraged me to learn, not only how to operate equipment, but also to understand all aspects of the operation including how equipment does what it does,” Carmen continued. “Darren loves when someone new comes and wants to learn and take a ride on equipment or asks questions as he wants others to see what we love doing.” That passion, Carmen believes, is an integral part in helping to encourage and grow the love of agriculture, by openly celebrating it.

Darren purchased this truck from the former Redcoat Chrysler in addition to other vehicles over the years. Since Brad purchased the dealership a couple of years ago and it became Knight Dodge we have purchased a number of Jeep and RAM vehicles. The staff has been very friendly and helpful in all aspects. From the initial sale to any service work we have needed we have been very happy with Brad and his staff! We really appreciate the strong community involvement and support that Knight Dodge provides to Weyburn and area as well. Boots, Belts and Bling PUT A WESTERN SPIN ON YOUR WARDROBE

WESTERN WEAR HAS COME A LONG WAY in the Fashion Industry. From Wranglers that only looked good on the back of a cowboy to high quality denim that is at home in any setting, adding a western touch to your wardrobe has never been easier. Accessories run the range from flashy rhinestones to elegant silver and turquoise pieces that compliment any style. Boots have become the go to footwear for everyday and have found their place in formal wear for women with a selection focused on weddings and high end fashion.

72    ReFined WEYBURN & AREA

DENIM The key piece for Western wear is, of course, denim. This season, a button-front or to-theknee denim skirt is the most versatile update, and will work for city or rural events. Pair yours with a cozy sweater for fall evenings. Jeans are always in style and this seasons lines have both a great fit and the essential bling to make them stand out. BOOTS The fashion cowboy boot category has exploded the past few years. High-end boots have jumped in the ring with funky decorative styles, colours and embellishments. For comfort, boots come with square or pointed toes, tie up or pull-ons, high or low styles, whatever your choice you can’t go wrong with a great pair of boots. JEWELLERY For accessories, cowgirls (and those who aspire to dress like one) opt for western wear classics: turquoise and silver. Think big pieces and vintage-inspired design for this year’s jewellery trends. Make a statement necklace or cuff work for your everyday look by pairing it with a solid t-shirt. TOPS AND DRESSES Red and white checked western shirts and jean dresses? No thanks. The modern cowgirl opts for really dreamy tops and dresses to offset masculine denim, leather and boots. Popular western wear choices include embroidery, blouse-y silhouettes, ruffles and plenty of white

linen. Look for ruched necklines with delicate ties and soft colours and fabrics. Romantic and feminine, these trends are incredibly fun to wear for all seasons. As with your statement jewelry, balance heavy, dramatic pieces with softer, more streamlined basics. HANDBAGS Tooled leather is a definitive western style trademark so it’s a natural pick in leather bags. The new Western inspired handbags also come in bold colours with bling and buckles as well as more demure styles of rich, smooth leather. A variety of options guarantees that the bag you choose will fit both your wardrobe and your lifestyle. BELTS Belts are for so much more that the functional use of holding up your pants. New styles lend elegance and design to both jeans and dress wear with rhinestones and leather tooling showing up in various colours and designs. A Western belt can be the crowning touch to a perfect outfit. The option to switch out belt buckles for an ever changing fashion statement also works. Grab some friends, go shopping and put Boots, Belts and Bling on your list of must haves for this season.

MOTORING

STAY SAFE

with these Winter Driving Tips

1

KNOW THE ROAD CONDITIONS. Check road safety conditions online and stay put if travel is not recommended. In Saskatchewan use the highway hotline at hotline www.gov.sk.ca. Download the mobile app for handy reference on changing conditions. In poor driving conditions, stick to the main roads they are more likely to be plowed and salted first.

2

KNOW THE EXPECTED WEATHER CONDITIONS AND BE PREPARED FOR THEM. Dress for the expected conditions with coats, mitts, hats, and boots. Keep your cell phone fully charged and consider investing in a car charger to ensure you always have a full battery.

3

FILL YOUR FUEL TANK AND KEEP IT OVER HALF FILLED DURING THE TRIP. If you get stranded you may need to run the engine to stay warm.

4

PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE FOR WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS. Install snow tires for extra traction on ice and snow. Check your spare tire to ensure it is in good repair and if possible get an extra snow tire to use as a winter spare. Upgrade your coolant levels and use winter rated windshield washer cleaner. Check your battery levels and replace your battery now if it will be unreliable in cold weather. Carry a bag of sand or cat litter in the back of your vehicle for traction if you get stuck in icy conditions. Keep a snow shovel in the trunk in case you have to dig yourself out.

5

CARRY A WINTER EMERGENCY SURVIVAL KIT IN CASE YOU GET STRANDED. Consider including the following items: First aid kit, blankets or sleeping bag, high energy food like granola bars or dried fruit, matches or a lighter, candles, and extra winter clothing. Plan ahead, be prepared and stay safe this on the road this winter.

W

ith the harshness of winter just around the corner, get your vehicle the care and attention it needs before the snow, ice and cold weather are here. There is nothing more frustrating than having a car that won’t start because of a dead frozen battery or other vehicle issues compounded by the cold. Kal Tire has two Red Seal provincial certified technicians on staff to ensure your automotive needs are completed correctly and with care. They will inspect and winterize your vehicle to help ensure your safety during the most treacherous driving conditions. TIRES AND BRAKES With tires being the only thing that touches the road you need to make sure you have a great set of winter tires. If you have never tried winter tires before, ask the experts at Kal Tire, Weyburn to help select the appropriate tire for your

vehicle. They will install and balance the tires for you. Let Kal Tire store your all weather tires for the winter in one of their storage units to help free up the space in your garage. Braking during the winter can be challenging if your brakes are not up to par and can result in sliding through intersections. From brake pads and shoes to ABS sensors and calipers, they offer full brake service to get you safely back on the road. ALTERNATORS, BATTERIES AND BLOCK HEATERS Voltage checks on alternators and batteries are extremely important before the first cold snap of the winter. This will ensure that there is proper voltage going to your vehicle, and eliminate the need for a boost. Block heaters also need to be checked to make sure all wiring is safe, and that the unit is properly functioning. FLUIDS Don’t let the obvious differences between man and machines fool you. Vehicles need fluids to survive just as much as humans do. There are 5 main fluids that your vehicle simply cannot run without on a daily basis: Engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant (Antifreeze) and windshield washer fluid. Kal Tire’s Red Seal certified technicians in Weyburn can complete full fluid flushes on all models

of vehicles. For the winter months make sure these are topped up before travelling. LIGHTS Winter driving conditions can include more night time driving, overcast skies, or extreme low visibility. To help keep yourself and other drivers safe, proper lighting is very important. During the winter ready inspection, a Kal Tire technician will check all driving lights including headlights, fog, brake, signal and taillights. SASKATCHEWAN SAFETY INSPECTIONS Kal Tire is certified to inspect vehicles up to one tonne for Saskatchewan Safety Inspections. They will help you fix what is needed to pass, and get you back on the road. AFTER HOURS SERVICE Kal Tire goes above and beyond expectations providing customer service and ensuring their customers are being looked after not only in store, but on the road or in the field as well. They are ready 24/7 to serve the city of Weyburn, as well as the farming, trucking and oilfield community. With service trucks equipped for many on-site repairs they can help the customer have a fast turnaround time. “Success of the client reflects on the success of the business”.

EXPERIENCE My experience with Refined Weyburn & Area Magazine has been nothing but positive. Showcasing new and different products and evolving services that we offer are easily measured by the instant response we get from customers the moment the magazine is released. The other plus that we`ve noticed is the longevity or shelf life that the magazine has as we consistently have people bringing in the picture from an issue or asking questions about a particular topic we have discussed months after the issue has been released. A personal observation when we visit friends is that we see that the magazine is still on the coffee table being reread and referred to so your advertising has staying power! I would wholeheartedly recommend using this type of medium because it`s easily measurable and has an upbeat modern feel to it that makes it unique. – Al York with York Jewellers
