020 has been an unforgettable year, bringing the economy to a grinding halt like never before. With this happening we decided it was best for our clients and team to cancel two issues of ReFINEd. However, we are so grateful to have the opportunity to work with everyone again to produce our Winter issue for your reading enjoyment. COVID-19 has made me truly grateful to live in Weyburn. With so much out of our control, we were lucky the responsible citizens of our community did their part to make sure we weren’t impacted the way other places were. We also had so many businesses and individuals that stepped up when we were unsure about what was coming next. For that, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to our essential workers. Our feature on page 8, ‘In Our Hour of Need’ is our way of showing our appreciation to the people who did what they needed to do as the pandemic made its way into our province, and continue that work today. Grace, Grit and Gratitude is our cover feature. We were fortunate to highlight this remarkable group of women entrepreneurs. Nancy McMahon (N.M. McMahon CPA), Melanie Ror (Pet Valu), Kali Holdstock (Holdstock Designs), Cristina Bohn (Save The Stress Cleaning Services), Alyssa DeMarchi (Root Hair Lounge) and Jo Beach (Cedar and Vine) are pictured on our cover. We also caught up with a few other amazing women from our community that are featured within this section. COVID-19 has brought many changes to all businesses. The biggest one for us has been how we handle photo shoots. The cover for this issue helped us get creative and think of new ways to photograph our clientele. You will notice our cover looks a bit different than usual. With help from our photographer, Jon Gillies, we were able to keep everyone safe. Our editor, Brook Thalgott, shared some of her favourite holiday recipes with us this issue. Check out these tasty cookies and cocktails on page 62. As the colder weather closes in on us, we at ReFINEd want to wish you all a safe and magical holiday season. Thank you for your support over the past six years. It has been our sincere pleasure to tell the stories of the community we’re so lucky to call home. In Our Hour of Need Essential Workers Answered the Call By Brook Thalgott
I
n March, our whole world changed overnight. While we had been watching the COVID-19 pandemic make its way from China to Europe and then to the U.S. in the early weeks of 2020, it still seemed so far from our lives in Saskatchewan. However, it would arrive with a mighty thump in mid-March.
On March 11, the NBA announced it would be postponing its season indefinitely with the positive COVID-19 cases among its players. A day later, the NHL would follow suit—the same day actors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson announced they had been diagnosed with the virus in Australia. By Monday, March 16, the Government of Saskatchewan announced that schools
would be sending students home and anyone who could work from home should do so. The federal government began organizing Canadians abroad to head home on repatriation flights and closed the border to all non-essential travel. COVID-19 had arrived in Canada, and it was ready to wreak havoc with our hospitals and our loved ones.
We caught the following 80 frontline workers on their break.

Around the province, businesses closed their doors to the public, events were cancelled, trips were ended, and we went home en masse. We set up offices and classrooms in kitchens and on coffee tables, and we tuned into daily broadcasts with case counts and advice on how to deal with a virus the world had never seen before. We got used to words like ‘new normal’, ‘pivot’, ‘unprecedented’, and ‘social distance’. It truly was, and is, a brave new world. As many of us watched the pandemic unfold on television safe with our families, there were others that stayed or marched right onto the front line. We learned quickly who in the world was vital to the lives we lead. Health care providers—everyone from paramedics and doctors to nurses and pharmacists— led the charge in our hospitals and
clinics, protecting and treating patients while risking their own health. Airline workers and border agents brought home Canadians from all over the world. Grocery store and food workers made sure shelves were stocked with the goods we needed, while keeping stores clean and safe for customers. Businesses of all kinds had to quickly figure out how to protect their employees and customers, while supplying the goods and services we need in our daily lives. Whether it was moving to online ordering, starting contactless delivery, or moving into offering new products like hand sanitizer, businesses made changes to adapt—and fast. Six months later, we have made tentative steps back to some sense of “normal.” Kids are back in school with masks and hand sanitizer. Grocery stores are
full again, but now with one-way lane markers. Offices are open, but meetings are held virtually from sanitized desks. Restaurants are back, with takeout options galore and tables carefully spaced. We travel with masks and stand six feet apart when running into our friends and neighbours on the street. New normal, indeed. Through all of this, essential workers from all kinds of sectors do what they need to do to keep us, and them, safe. For that, there will never be enough thanks. Next time you’re in the grocery store, the medical clinic or at your favourite local business—say thanks. Our essential workers and local businesses are the backbone of our community and when we needed them the most, they were there.

sweet basil is a must-have. It’s terrific with tomatoes, perfect with pasta, and it’s the base of classic pesto. Plop a plant in your window or buy it fresh in the produce section. There are many varieties of basil, including Thai, cinnamon and purple.
Chives – a pretty perennial, chives is easy to grow and maintain. Snips of chives liven up salads and potatoes, and their pretty pink blooms attract pollinators in the garden. It grows great in a container, too.
Cilantro – a staple in Mexican and
Thai cooking, cilantro is something you love or hate. I LOVE it. It’s perfect in salsa, tacos, salads, fresh rolls and more.
Dill – fresh or dried, it’s delicious.
It livens up potatoes, fish and dips. Possibly the easiest herb to grow, the Fernleaf variety can be tamed in a container. To harvest, just pinch or snip off the leaves.
Rosemary – a tender perennial, rosemary can keep on a windowsill yearround. It smells divine when you brush against it, and it’s wonderful in meat rubs for steaks, roast beef and more. It’s piney and pointy and fantastic.
Mint – another easy to grow herb for a sunny sill, mint comes in many varieties. I really like apple mint and pineapple mint—they smell heavenly and are great muddled in cocktails.
Sage – a prairie staple, sage is one my favourite scents of summer. It’s a hardy perennial that loves full sun in well-drained potting soil. It’s a dream with chicken and in stuffing, and it grows easily in containers and the garden. Garden sage is the most common variety, but you can also plant Greek sage, purple sage and fruit sage.
Oregano – popular in Mediterranean cooking, oregano is perfect for pasta and tomato sauces. Greek oregano is the most common, and it loves the sun. Dry it and let it spice up your cooking all winter long.
Thyme – it comes in many varieties, including lemon, lime, silver, and lavender. Most common is English thyme. Like sage, it loves full sun in welldrained potting soil and pairs well with vegetables, grilled meats and in soups.

While fall is just arriving and winter is peeking around the corner, it’s never too early to think about next year’s garden. While you perfect your indoor herb garden this winter, think about a tea garden for next spring. Here are some excellent choices for starting an herbal tea adventure outside.

Enjoy Your Herbs Here are a few recipes for your herbal harvest. Caprese Salad This salad is a heavenly way to enjoy garden tomatoes while they last. Olive Oil Balsamic Vinegar 1 container Bocconcini (fresh mozzarella) 3 ripened garden tomatoes Basil Leaves Coarse salt and pepper Slice tomatoes and bocconcini balls, layering them with basil leaves on a plate. Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and season with coarse salt and pepper.

It may be getting cold outside, but you can escape to the beaches of Cuba with this cool cocktail.
You can never go wrong with Pico de Gallo and a big bowl of tortilla chips. Just add your favourite Netflix show and binge!
10 fresh mint leaves ½ a lime, cut into wedges
2 large, ripened garden tomatoes, seeded and finely diced
2 tbsp white sugar
1/3 c. chopped fresh cilantro
1½ oz. white rum
¼ c. finely chopped white onion
½ cup club soda Ice cubes Place the mint and one lime wedge in a glass. With a muddler, crush the mint and lime. Add two more lime wedges and the sugar and muddle again. Fill the glass with ice and pour in the rum. Fill the glass with club soda and stir. Garnish with another lime and enjoy!
1 small jalapeno pepper, finely chopped 1 tbsp. lime juice ½ tsp. salt Mix ingredients together in a bowl, taste and add more salt, peppers and lime juice to taste. Serve with your favourite tortilla chips.

“By focusing on good design, I believe we can support the Canadian economy and provide a product that is sustainable; while still making sense for my customers pricewise,” says Jo. “I like to break this down to the cost per wear analogy. You could spend $20 on a cheap t-shirt and wear it twice or spend $200 on a shirt and wear it at least 20 times. Your cost per wear for both garments is the same, but with the later investment garment you have supported your local economy, wasted less, and are able to wear a good quality garment that you truly love and hopefully live in for many years. A: “I knew it would be a lot of work; but to me the bigger surprise is what “type” of work you end up spending the most time on. When I started my company, it was mostly because of my passion for creating and design but I quickly realized how much time would be spent marketing, selling, and providing customer service. I also didn’t anticipate how many amazing connections and friendships I would make with makers, clients, students, and employees as a result—and for that I am very grateful.”
A: “I could write a whole book on all the wonderful people who have helped me along the way and for that I can’t even express my gratitude in words. Above all to my husband who is the most supportive, patient, and makes my dreams into a reality. He makes up for my lack in every way, so together we make a great team and have a lot of fun along the way. Having a support system is so, so important and I am the luckiest person in the world to have him as a best friend and life partner.”
Grace Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to women looking to start their own business? A: “It is impossible to have everything figured out and to plan for everything that is going to come your way. For me personally, I see the most growth when I commit to my vision, stay in my own lane, and have short term goals to keep me inspired. Things work out one step at a time. ‘Better oops, than what if.’”

A: “My career started years ago, really. Growing up I always enjoyed pampering friends and family and making them feel good about themselves. On the other hand, I was hesitant to commit to a career choice—but after starting a family with my husband, I felt that the only piece of my puzzle that was missing was a career that I was passionate about. I enrolled in school to become a hairstylist and was in class before my maternity leave was even complete. I have never looked back. Q: How did you decide you wanted to start your own business? A: “From the time I was in Cosmetology back in High school, owning a salon was something I saw myself doing. Owning a
business in general was something that I was interested in achieving—and with a salon, I really think it opens up the opportunity to create the exact atmosphere you enjoy working in, building your client experience into exactly what you want it to be, and attracting like minded people to work alongside with you.”

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to women looking to start their own business? A: “If it’s what you want, go for it! Don’t let others discourage you, and don’t let your own doubts get in the way.” Q: How do you manage your business and your family life? A: “This is something I am still learning to do, and I can only presume that the balance of both will have to adapt throughout the years to come. I think I speak for a lot of women when I say that the balance between career and family is hard to find—it tends to never be good enough for society! I’m learning to stick to my schedule, put my phone down when I’m spending time with my kids and to just do what works for my family.”

Jessica Payette | Jessica is a Registered Massage Therapist, practicing since graduating from the Professional Institute of Massage Therapy in 2008. While her training was quite traditional, her style and approach is not as common. She believes in reconnecting the mind and body to repair and rebalance the physical body. Her techniques are slow, which allows people to connect their breath with the work being done and the movement of the muscles.
Q: How do you make sure you get downtime for yourself? “Luckily, I enjoy my work. I get to socialize and create a form of art that I find very fulfilling. Grit Q: How did you decide you wanted to start your own business? A: “Six years ago there was a need in Weyburn for pet supplies and nutrition. Having done research on pet food for my own pets, I needed an outlet to share the knowledge. I teamed up with Pet Valu in 2014 and purchased the business in 2015. Since then, I’ve been able to supply thousands of pet products to Weyburn and surrounding area. My goal is to always provide useful pet knowledge to our customers.”
Gratitude Q: What’s the one thing you are most grateful for in owning your business? A: “I am most grateful for excellent staff who care. I get to lead a team of animal care experts who learn all about our products. Our customers, too! We appreciate everyone who has shopped with us since our beginning in business.

hristina owns Save The Stress Cleaning Services, a residential and commercial cleaning company. They offer carpet cleaning, post construction cleaning, organizing services, basic and deep cleaning, and strive to be that company that goes above and beyond.
Grit Q: How did your career start? A: “By accident. My business started back in 2017 when my husband was given a layoff along with 35 other people. I wasn’t working at the time, so it was very scary for us. I started working a part time job when a friend asked me if I would clean a rig shack. Of course I will, anything helps right now! A week later his friend called me with more shacks. When those were done, he asked me to stay on and clean the office once a week. I thought to myself, I can do this, but I’m not going to do it like I did before. I am going to build a brand. I hired someone to build me a website and through many emails and drawings on napkins the logo was born. I started handing out my card to everyone I talked to. In the first month, we picked up a couple clients and the next month we doubled that. Every month after that we doubled for the first year. We continue to grow every month whether it’s through new clients, new services or new areas.” Q: Did you know when you started how much work it was going to be? A: “Never did I think owning my own business would mean opening my eyes from sleep to start working and thinking about the day ahead when it’s time to close them. I have always found myself bored in a job after a few months because the routine was set, and I would get faster at completing the work. Now, it is always something different. I have hundreds of clients I speak with, 15 staff members to keep organized, and different tasks to organize every day.
Yes, it is a lot of work, but the challenge makes it so much more rewarding.”
Grace Q: When did you know you “had it” or were going to succeed with your business?
and it is going to take some work. I have taken a couple of vacations through the last five years but in the back of mind work is still there. I try to make the effort to put the phone away at a decent hour so that I can rest somewhat.”
A: “Do we ever really know we have made it? I think as an entrepreneur you are always looking for something more. I set a goal when I first started this company, I was going to have four employees in two years and quit my regular job. I was able to do that in six months. The dream just continues to grow. More staff, more clients, more locations. I don’t think I will ever get to a point where we stop growing whether its in size or just knowledge.” Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to women looking to start their own business? “Ask for help. As women, we tend to think we can do it all on our own. I have an amazing team that are willing to jump in and learn as we grow. I have had to learn that it is best to hire out the little things and focus on what you are good at. Like marketing, perfect focus on that, hate numbers, hire an accountant. Also take time off! Put someone in charge and trust that it won’t all fall apart just because you took a week off.”
Gratitude Q: What’s the one thing you are most grateful for in owning your business? A: “Being able to work alongside my husband. In the beginning, he stuck to the fixing part but now he does a lot of the hands-on work and I love how much passion he has for learning new techniques. We make a great team and together we are building something that can provide our family the security we need.” Q: How do you make sure you get downtime for yourself? A: “This is one area that I need to pay more attention to but I have a dream

Grit Q: How did you decide you wanted to start your own business? A: “I decided to start my blog late one evening while breastfeeding my daughter, Violet. I just became a new mom and at the time it felt like I had lost my identity. I knew I needed to find a hobby to feel a little like my old self again—something that I genuinely enjoyed and did just for me. My little hobby evolved over time into a business! I really had no idea what I was getting into at the time.” Q: Did you know when you started how much work it was going to be? A: “No! I was honestly clueless about the actual work that goes into running an active social media account/blog site. After I decided I wanted to pursue this as a career, I spent a lot of my evenings researching DSLR cameras/photography tips, how to customize your own website and much more.” Q: While playing multiple roles, how do you stay organized? A: “I write out lists for myself of what needs to get done each day. Everything
Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to women looking to start their own business? A: “Trust your gut and have faith. There will be outside opinions no matter what type of business you are in. Heck, there is outside opinions even as parents. Like raising a child, only you know what is best and right for your business. If something doesn’t feel right—it probably isn’t. Have faith that all the bumps and hiccups you’ll face along the way are purposefully leading you to what is meant to be.” Q: “Are there any programs, apps, or websites that you use to make your work life or personal life easier?” A: Since I love being organized, I use an app called UNUM that allows me to upload pending feed posts, write captions, and make things look cohesive ahead of time. I also really like the Adobe Lightroom app and use it to edit all my photos.
Gratitude Q: What is the one thing you are most grateful for in owning your business? A: “That I am in complete control & in the driver seat. I get to decide how much I push myself and what my work hours

are, what partnerships I want to pursue and exactly how much of my life I want to share on social media.” Q: How do you make sure you get downtime for yourself? A: “I schedule downtime into my daily life. Being the daughter of a social worker and school counsellor allowed me to learn about mental health and how important it is from a young age. If I start to feel stressed or overwhelmed, I can recognize that in myself. I promptly make a point in scheduling some downtime— whether that be a bath, a night out with my girlfriends, or a trip to the spa. As my Mom would say: ‘You’re no good to others if you can’t be good to yourself first.’”

A: “I was very frustrated in my career. I felt very unfulfilled—like I wasn’t living up to my potential. I felt I could do more. I was working towards an accounting degree, but the market kept calling to me. Small business owners need good bookkeepers. Bookkeepers that care about them.” Q: What have been the challenges in being a woman entrepreneur? The benefits and opportunities? A: “Definitely being a woman and a mother has made it challenging to be an entrepreneur. As I’m having a breakthrough to the latest problem plaguing my business or the business of my clients, I have to leave to go to soccer or school or wherever else
A: “Do it, just do it! Commit to a plan and do it. You become so much more of who you are by starting your own business.” Q: What is the most important thing someone should consider before they start a business? A: “Have a why, know your why! Have a vision and a mission statement use it often to remind yourself why you are committed because commitment is everything. There will be tough times, there will be stress, there will also be great times. Commitment will bring you through the tough stuff. A committed person will look for a solution before giving up.”

Gratitude Q: What's the one thing you are most grateful for in owning your business? A: “The thing I am most grateful for in owning my own business is that I get to decide what my day looks like. I decide what fires I show up to, if I feel I need to take time for my sick child, to help when there’s a vehicle break down or if someone needs a ride or to listen to a friend in need. I can choose to do that.” Q: How do you give back? A: My business has allowed me to donate to the Food Bank, several cancer fundraisers, and a few community organizations.

From a Hobby to a Hustle Turning Fun into a Business By Brook Thalgott
Hobbies are a fun way to relax and recharge, channel creativity, or pass the time evenings and weekends. Whether you’re doing your thing on the couch, in the kitchen or out in the garage, hobbies can be more than just a way to enjoy your free time. They can turn into something that can pay, and if you’re really lucky, become a full-time job. Imagine that—doing what you love to do and get paid too. It’s a dream come true!
N
ow, before you start your venture, there are a few things to consider when moving a hobby to a hustle.
Figure out what you want. Is your hobby something you want to do all day, every day? Or is it something you’ll do on the side? Some people use money made to buy more equipment and supplies for their hobby, and that’s it—which is a good goal. Others may want to take their hobby to the next level. Whatever you want to do, define it.

Do your homework. Is there a market for what you do that is big enough to sustain your plan? Ask questions and analyze your competition.

Plan your model. Once you know what you want to do, make sure it pays. You must define your business model and how it will make money. And—make sure it makes enough money. Some hustles don’t pay enough once you account for your time to make your project or do your service, the supplies you

need, and the time you’ll spend on paperwork and looking for customers. Don’t sink money into something that doesn’t pay enough for your effort.
Get your name out there. Marketing is a vital part of business success. Learn where your customers are and how to reach them.

Connect with your customers. Customers are the key to sales. Find them, cultivate them, and keep them coming back for more.
Test it out. Before you take the plunge, test your idea to see what the market thinks. It can be as simple as booking a table at your local craft fair, advertising on social media, or piloting your idea with your friends, family, and colleagues.

If your test goes well, head into formal business planning if your hobby shows the potential to become a side or full-time venture. There are many great sources for business plan templates online. Check out Square One Saskatchewan or the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) for great business plan examples.

Talk money. Get your business finances in order, with a separate bank account. At a minimum, you will need a business license, and to register your name. Also, check into whether you must collect GST and PST.

our accountant requires many types of information to complete your taxes. Here is a helpful guide to the sometimes-confusing terminology used by accountants.
GENERAL PREPARATION • Bank statements – If you have a bookkeeper, bring a copy of the yearend bank statement and your statement for the month following your year end. If your accountant does your bookkeeping, provide all your bank statements for the year. • Inventory – Provide a complete list of your inventory. This may include bushels of grain by types held in bins or a list of merchandise held for re-sale at fiscal year end. • Accounts receivables – This includes work performed prior to year end and payments not received until after year end. • Investment statements – Provide your broker with authorization to allow your accountant to contact them directly for the required information. Don’t forget to tell your accountant if you have an investment account and how much you have transferred from your business account! • Capital asset additions and disposals – This includes invoices for purchases or sale of vehicles, land, farming equipment, oil field equipment, etc. • Accounts payables – These are expenses incurred prior to the year end but not paid for until after the year end.
• Credit cards – Provide credit card statements for the fiscal year and identify business expenses. • GST and PST – Provide the GST and PST reports you have submitted for the year. • Loan statements – Provide any loan statements for the fiscal year as well as any new financing agreements. • Shareholder contributions – Identify any personal deposits you have made to your corporation, so they are not recorded as revenue. Otherwise, you may end up paying taxes on personal funds. • Grain revenue – Provide grain tickets for preparation of AgriInvest/AgriStability reports.

ike everything else in the markets, investment portfolios, endured some volatile movement in the pandemic. It has been a wild ride as we watched some funds go down and even saw certain funds flourish—particularly in tech—during these historic times. The question to be asked is what can you do as an investor to protect and prepare yourself in times like this? Here are some tips from the advisors at Weyburn Security. As they say, the best defence is a good offence. In times when prices are down substantially, consider it the same as a

sale at your favourite local store. Take advantage of dips in the market by contributing to your funds or add new funds when prices are low to get a good price point on your funds. One of the best ways to do this is to use a PreAuthorized Chequing Plan (PAC Plan). This is where you contribute regularly— such as weekly, bi-weekly, monthly— and the PAC plan will purchase more units of a fund when prices are low and less units when they are high. This will lower your adjusted cost base. What does a low-cost base mean? It means a higher return on your investment, which is what everyone wants. A PAC plan is the number one go-to strategy

for being successful in volatile times. On top of that, the theory of “pay yourself first” kicks in. In any budget, the number one step after paying the necessary bills is to pay yourself and a PAC plan accomplishes just that. Stay calm. This is easier said than done. However, if we investigated what history has taught us, it tells us that markets that have had substantial drops or a recession have always come back in the end. Do not panic and sell when the markets drop. Be patient. Stick to your objectives and goals. You are saving and investing your money for a reason. Do not get lost in the world

Good Morning Sunshine! Mindful Practices to Boost Your Mood and Find Your Own Tranquility
Unless you’ve been living in a cave without internet or television, 2020 has not been the best year for anyone. We’re in the middle of a once-in-a-century pandemic, and well, it sucks. These days, we could all use a little more tender loving care, and the best place to start is with yourself. Here are a few ways to improve your mood and grow a little peace within. 1. Finish what you started. We all have things we began, and then abandoned for whatever reason. It’s time to see what isn’t done and make a plan to finish it or move on from it. Find the projects, make a list, and finish up or make peace with ending it.
2. Remove the clutter. Peace and contentedness can come from organized, tidy spaces. When you release yourself from things you don’t need, you clear up your home and your mind. Start small with a drawer or a closet, one day at a time.

3. Accept what you cannot change. There are forces at work in our lives that we can’t control. Instead of resisting what we can’t change, letting go can change your frame of mind. If you’re trapped in an emotional war, you’re stuck. Inspiration and creativity flow when you can accept what you can and cannot change.
4. Respond instead of reacting. Often, we react to situations emotionally without thinking first. Before you react, take a moment to process what is happening, contemplate all the information, and respond with clarity.
5. Breathe. It seems too easy, but just the act of breathing can ease tension. When you are caught up in something stressful, step back and take a deep breath before you keep going. Taking a moment to focus and process can take away the stress of a moment and help you find the best words or actions.

It also makes you a better friend, partner, parent, and colleague when you’re tuned into the people in your life.

Our lives are ruled by time. Whether it’s making it to work in the morning, dropping the kids off at school, or finishing a project by a deadline, we’re tied to a clock. Be sure to take some of that time for yourself. Whether it’s time on the treadmill, in a tub of bubbles, or just sitting in the car for a few minutes before carrying on, take some time for yourself to decompress. Turn off the music, put down the phone and just…be.
Nature is a place you can get away from life’s distractions and stressors. A walk on a trail, a drive down a country road, or just sitting on a bench in the park can help clear out the noise in your head. Watch the wildlife (even sparrows count!), breathe the fresh air, and listen to the sounds of the outdoors—being in nature is one of the best ways to shed stress and reconnect to peace.

PAHC has been doing their best to keep up to the needs of their clients and patients over the past 10 months. Their Estevan veterinarians have been helping to fill the void after two veterinarians moved to Alberta. Hiring veterinarians is like hiring doctors, there are simply not enough to fill the need, so you can imagine the excitement of being able to fill both vacant roles. With families at home more than ever, the family pet has gotten a lot more attention. Many families added pets or got their very first pet during the pandemic. This has created an increased demand and longer waits for appointments. The hope is with the two
new veterinarians the clinic will be able to reduce wait times and even expand hours to offer evenings appointments for working families. Fall is a busy time for cattle producers with cows returning from pasture, this also marks the beginning of preg testing season. Both Dr. Kendra and Dr. Greg are eager and excited to work with producers in ensuring they have the most productive herd possible. Dr. Greg Douglas comes to PAHC from Ontario where he worked most recently in industry, government, and clinical practice. A graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991, his interests include surgery, emergency
management and animal welfare. He enjoys working with all animals and welcomes the opportunity to get to know all the clients of PAHC, both human and animal. Greg’s career has taken him to an externship at the Animal Medical Center in New York, critical care medicine in Hawaii, and numerous locums throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. While in government, Greg amended the Saskatchewan Animal Protection Act, implemented the Ontario Animal Health Act, and chased disease outbreaks from coast to coast. With industry, Greg developed and put into action the animal care strategy for Maple Leaf Foods.

COOKIES &Cocktails As we wind down this crazy year, we suggest celebrating the holiday season (and soothing jangled nerves) with this fine selection of cookies and cocktails. Turn on the oven and raid the liquor cabinet—these delights will warm your very soul.
Chocolate Chip Butterballs These cuties look great on holiday trays and are perfect alongside a big mug of hot chocolate. 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour 1 cup ground almonds
Add salt, vanilla and water, blend well. Gradually stir in flour mixture. Shape into ¾” balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheets and bake for 20 minutes or until the edges just begin to brown. Cool thoroughly. Once cool, melt the second cup of chips and drizzle over the cooled cookies. Store in fridge. Makes approximately 3 dozen cookies.
2 cups chocolate chips ¾ cup butter, softened ½ cup icing sugar ¼ tsp salt ¾ tsp vanilla 2 tsp cold water Preheat oven to 325°F. Combine flour, almonds and 1 cup chips; mix well. Cream butter, gradually adding sugar and beat until light and fluffy.

Peanut Butter Kisses Easy to make and you can’t eat just one. 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk ¾ - 1 cup smooth peanut butter 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 cups biscuit baking mix Granulated sugar 60 chocolate kisses In a large bowl, beat condensed milk, peanut butter, egg and vanilla until smooth. Add biscuit mix; mix well. Cover. Refrigerate at least one hour. Preheat oven to 350°F. Shape into 1” balls and roll in sugar. Place 2” apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Do not overbake. Remove from oven. Press a chocolate kiss into each cookie immediately. Cool. Makes approximately 5 dozen cookies.
Spiced Raisin Gems These spicy, soft cookies are delightful in the lunch box, and on the couch binging your favourite show. ¾ cup butter or margarine, softened

2 tsp baking soda

Prairie Winter Sangria Who says sangria is only for summer? 750 ml bottle red wine 3 tbsp sugar 1 oz orange juice 1 cinnamon stick 2 whole cloves 1 star anise 1 oz Grand Marnier 1 grapefruit, sliced 1 orange, sliced 1 apple, sliced 1 cup grapefruit sparkling water 1 cup fresh cranberries (optional) 1 cup pomegranate seeds (optional) Blend together all ingredients into a large pitcher, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Refrigerate for at least two hours. Serve over ice.
Dark & Blizzardy Normally called a Dark & Stormy, Blizzardy works better with our famous winters. 4 oz ginger beer 2 oz dark or spiced rum ½ oz fresh lime juice (about 1 lime) Lime wedge for garnish Fill a glass or copper mug with ice, and pour in ginger beer, lime juice, and then top with the rum. Garnish with lime wedge and stir before drinking.
