Suncoast Enclosures will custom build your louvered roof as an addition to your home/business or as its own free-standing patio cover. Holiday Fabrics & How to Wear Them

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! But it also can be one of the most stressful times to try to figure out what to wear. In this month’s issue, I’m breaking down the top holiday fabrics and how to wear them. You’ll be all set for the company Christmas party AND New Year’s Eve by the end of this article!

S

equins - This is probably the most popular holiday fabric of all! I personally love sequins, but they can be a bit overwhelming. I love pairing sequined leggings with a neutralcoloured sweater or a chambray shirt for an easy, semi-casual holiday look. You also could go more formal by pairing a basic blouse with a sequined skirt or go all out with a full sequined dress! Just be sure to choose a sequined dress that flatters your body type & keep your heels relatively neutral. Not big into sequins? Tone it down but still look festive by opting for sequined accessories in the form of a clutch or jewelry! Tulle - If you have been following my blog for a little while, you’ll know that I LOVE a good tulle midi skirt!

10

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

All you need is a sweater (tucked in if it’s not a crop top), a tulle midi skirt and your favourite pair of heels, and you’re set for a holiday party! Keep your sweater and heels/booties relatively neutral - let your skirt be the focal point of the outfit. For a less formal look, pair your tulle midi skirt with either a plaid or chambray shirt tucked in or tied in the front. Silk - Silk fabrics are definitely trending this year! However, this fabric can be really tricky (and unforgiving) if it doesn’t fit your body properly. My favourite way to incorporate silk into a holiday outfit is in the form of a cami with a cute jacket over top or a slip dress with a shirt underneath. Silk can be so chic - so play around a bit until you find a style that you’re confident in and works with your body type!

STYLE & BEAUTY

Fur - Fur can make any outfit look more expensive! You all know from the fall issue that I love a good fur vest. Fur instantly dresses up an outfit and can really add a unique flare. You can also incorporate fur into your holiday wear by putting on a fur coat or choosing fur accessories in the form of a scarf or hat. You’ll be warm AND look classy!

“The main thing to remember is to let whatever festive fabric you are wearing be the focal point of the outfit!”

Velvet - Velvet is probably my favourite of all the holiday fabric trends this year. It seems people either love or hate velvet. I, personally, cannot get enough of it! Velvet dresses, camis, blazers, accessories, even pants – give me all the velvet!! Maybe just don’t wear them all at the same time! My favourite way to wear velvet is in the form of a long-sleeved midi dress or a structured blazer. Each of these fabrics are fun ways to incorporate a little holiday cheer into your outfits this season. The main thing to remember is to let whatever festive fabric you are wearing be the focal point of the outfit!

UNBELIEVABLE RETURN POLICY The stress caused by Christmas shopping can take the fun out of gift-giving. What if it doesn’t fit? What if the colour is wrong? What if she doesn’t like it? What if I can’t get it back until spring or if my son wants something else, like tools or chocolates? Well, at King’s, when you ask about a return, we simply say, ‘No problem’. If it takes 6 months to get it back... no problem. If you lost the receipt... no problem. You want cash back or it was on sale…you guessed it…no problem. We do appreciate and require the factory tags but that’s it. Please…bring it back. It's no problem!

or seven years, Vanessa Lanktree has been capturing life’s meaningful moments. As a photographer, she gets to be part of the special

milestones that people celebrate from graduation to engagement to wedding to families and so on. Vanessa has spent the last several years recording moments to look back on, and it’s something she loves every minute of. “I am so lucky to do what I do,” says Vanessa. “I get to experience the laughter and the joy in every moment, and document it. It’s a blessing disguised as a job.”

Vanessa was incredible to work with. She is very relaxed and made everyone feel comfortable. She was very professional, but also had a lot of fun with all of us. She captured so many moments of laughter that we are going to enjoy looking back on. She was very organized and knew exactly what needed to be done; it truly helped make our day that much easier and stress free! She took pictures of everything, and we are so grateful we can look back and relive every minute of our special day! We couldn't be happier with what we have received from Vanessa Lanktree Photography and can't wait to use her again in the future! - Justin & Kayla McDonald

I am so in love with all of the pictures Vanessa took! It was like we were in that moment all over again. She captured everything perfectly. For me, to look at them and feel the exact same emotion I did in that moment was amazing! I could even feel the heat of the sun and smell the freshness! I cried! She did such an amazing job. I can't even describe how blessed we are for bringing her on our destination wedding. I will have these pictures forever, and I'll always have the same emotion as that exact day when I look at them for the rest of my life! We're so lucky to have Vanessa in our lives! - Claudia and Jordan Tremblay

Claudia and Jordan

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience with Vanessa. She did a beautiful job of capturing my graduation photos and the moment. She created a comfortable environment by being very friendly and keeping the conversation going. She has a great eye for finding beautiful, picturesque spots to shoot. She has a very welcoming presence that made me feel very comfortable throughout the process and not at all camera-shy. The final pictures were absolutely beautiful. The care and dedication Vanessa puts forth shows that she truly cares about her clients and her work. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. - Rebecca Mondor

YOUR HEALTH

The

Mind-Muscle Connection By Tonya Lambert

20

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

YOUR HEALTH

Unlike in many Eastern cultures, the crucial connection between the mind, body and spirit was severed in the West many centuries ago. This is unfortunate as each aspect of our being affects the others. Too much emphasis on one area and our whole being becomes unbalanced and unhealthy.

M

ind-body fitness programs combine stretching and moving with breathing techniques and mindfulness. There are many ancient Eastern exercise regimes that are designed to enhance the body-mind-spirit connection. Some examples are yoga, tai chi and qi gong. By comparison, pilates, a rare example of a European-developed mind-body fitness system, is relatively new, having been created in Germany in the 20th century. An easy form of mind-body fitness to practice is to meditate while walking. This is best done in a natural setting with few distractions. How do you meditate while walking? One of the best ways is to focus on your surroundings and your senses. What do you see? Hear? Feel? Is the wind blowing through your hair? Is there hoarfrost on the trees? Can you hear the snow crunching under your feet? Whatever form of mind-muscle workout routine you choose, make sure it goes well with your lifestyle and fitness level. This is important for both your physical and mental wellbeing. If you try to do a workout that takes too long or is too difficult, it can add stress to your life affecting your mental wellbeing; your physical health won’t benefit either as you are likely to stop doing a workout that is too challenging. Select a time, place and style that suits you. If possible, find a space that inspires you, a place that feels comfortable and gives your body and mind the room they need to stretch and soar. Many people like to multitask when they are working out, watching a television while on the treadmill or listening to a podcast while jogging. We live in a world of distractions, with smartphones at our fingertips and laptops on our desks. Many people are losing the ability to focus, making it harder to complete tasks and eating up even more of our precious little time. Turn off technology when you exercise. Pay attention to your breathing: in and out, slow and controlled. Be present in the here and now, not worrying about tomorrow or next week. Focus on your body and stop comparing yourself to the other people at the gym. Studies show that when we pay attention to our muscles they actually work better and harder. Being mindful while working out also helps to prevent injury by ensuring that you are using proper form and technique. How does your body feel? Are you able to stretch further or lift heavier weights than you could a month ago? Take the time to notice and appreciate your accomplishments. Practicing mind-body fitness is essential for your overall wellbeing. It will not only help you to lose weight and keep fit but will also relieve stress and improve your mood. Resolve to make mind-body fitness a priority in your life in the New Year.

AMAZING TECHNOLOGY. SIMPLE TO APPLY. Every day we spend more and more time using our tablets, mobile and smartphones. We are constantly sharing information, networking and communicating with our friends and our business partners or just using these devices for fun. But did you know that all these devices emit radiation, which may be harmful for the human body? The legally defined specific absorption rate (SAR) only protects our bodies against the influence of high radio-frequency radiation. BioZen is the only technology in the world that expands this protection to a biological level. This is possible by positively changing the low-frequency electromagnetic fields that are formed.

For years, Marge Rubin decorated the front windows of the store with her winter houses/community display. Customers would comment on how they knew winter was here because Marge had put up the houses. Similarly, people would later comment that they knew spring was here because Marge had taken down the display. After Marge’s passing in 2013, we couldn’t bring ourselves to put up the display without her but last year, it was time. Customers will once again see the annual winter village display in the windows of Southeastern Computer Solutions as a tribute to Marge and her amazing and kind spirit.

Weekend Getaways:

SKIING IN SASKATCHEWAN By Tonya Lambert

S

askatchewan is like a playground paradise for fans of the outdoors. In the summer, there’s fishing, swimming, hiking and waterskiing. In the winter, there’s skating, snowmobiling, shoveling (We do it so much, it ought to be made a sport!) and… downhill skiing! Contrary to what the rest of the country may think, many prairie flatlanders are avid skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, who love to carve up the slopes every chance they get.

28

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

Saskatchewan’s ski hills may be small by neighbouring Alberta’s mountainous standards, but they still offer an exciting, energetic winter weekend workout that the whole family will enjoy. So, grab your gear and head out to one of the province’s stunningly beautiful ski hills for a stimulating experience.

Duck Mountain Ski Area Since 1978, Saskatchewanians have been shredding lines down the slopes at Duck Mountain Ski Area near Kamsack. Managed by a volunteer, non-profit

organization, Duck Mountain aims to provide visitors with an “exciting, satisfying adventure and entertainment, leaving them with a lasting and rewarding impression of the beauty of winter in a rural Canadian setting.” With 21 runs, a tubing hill and a terrain park set in the pretty parkland of east central Saskatchewan, Duck Mountain has certainly accomplished that. There are also cross-country and snowmobile trails nearby for those who crave more variety. Then, after a day of fresh air and fun on the hills, visitors can relax at the T-Bar Café or Lookout Lounge.

They even have a magic carpet conveyor to help you back up the bunny hill! Wish the winter days weren’t so short in Saskatchewan? At Wapiti, the fun continues after dark with well-lit ski hills and a licensed lounge.

Located in the picturesque Qu’Appelle Valley, Mission Ridge is a fun place for the whole family. Sign your children up for the Snow School, Kids Kampus or Riderz Youngbloods ski and snowboard programs. Ladies, Thursday evenings are reserved for you at Mission Ridge: hit the slopes with other Downhill Divas followed by food and drinks in the Red ‘T’ Bar Lounge afterwards. For some freestyle fun, grab your board and grapple with the exciting obstacles at Mission Ridge’s two terrain parks.

• As well, at each home game, one young hockey player gets to head out onto the ice during player introductions, skate with the players and stand on the blue line during the singing of O’Canada as the Richardson Pioneer 7th Man. • Every Saturday night home game this season, you will also be entertained during the second intermission with a rousing game of Rock’Em Sock’Em Bubble Soccer hosted by the Weyburn Credit Union. Ten local businesses have formed teams and are competing in a round robin tournament to win $500 for their team, $500 for a local

charity of their choice and, of course, bragging rights. • Don’t forget to stay around until the end of the game when three of your Weyburn Red Wings can be found in the lobby meeting fans and signing autographs. Game Days are made more exciting through our Game Day Sponsors! Local businesses team up with your Weyburn Red Wings to showcase their products and services in the lobby during the game all while showcasing their commitment to the community! Game day sponsorship opportunities are still available for the

2017-2018 season. Contact the Red Wing Office today for more information. Where in Weyburn can you find your Weyburn Red Wings? The answer is everywhere! Your Weyburn Red Wings are proud to be a part of your community and look for opportunities to become involved in events around town as often as they can. So far this season, your Weyburn Red Wings have been found serving up Smile Cookies at Tim Hortons, playing road hockey at Canadian Tire, unloading food donations at the Salvation Army as part of the FCC Drive Away Hunger Event, running the cameras at the United Way Communithon and taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk for the Cure. During the season, your Weyburn Red Wings will also be visiting each of the local elementary schools to read sports-related stories with the students, promoting the importance of literacy through the Top Notch Towing and Weyburn Red Wings Reading Program.

This program provides an opportunity for the players to compare their own experiences to the stories and share their life lessons with the students. HUNTER BROTHERS

T

he Hunter Brothers - Luke, J.J., Ty, Brock and Dusty – grew up on a farm near Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. Due to the influence of Grandpa Hunter, the family was very musical, with each boy having played instruments since prekindergarten. Singing gospel music was their family thing, entertaining in concerts across Canada and the U.S. The boys also worked on the family farm and played semi-professional and professional hockey as well. After a timeout from their various professions, and a break from seeding, the brothers found themselves drawn to the singing that had been such a significant part of their youth. Exceptionally musical, the brothers put their talents together and, for the first time, turned to country music. The Hunter Brothers’ first single, “El Dorado”, was created with fabulous

production skills combined with Grammy award-winning producing. Their second single, “Long Way to Love You”, an upbeat track about long-distance love, hit the Top 40 on the radio. Since their explosive launch, the brothers have been performing live acoustic sets on radio stations and television spots, sharing their versatile harmonies and soulful sound across this nation. They’ve also become known for their unparalleled ability to create song parody videos, the most recent of which, ”The Tractor Got Stuck”, has more than 1.5 million views. The Hunter Brothers’ debut album, “Getaway”, released earlier this year, is definitely carving out a significant spot in the world of country music! Prepare to be amazed with the Hunter Brothers in concert at the Cugnet Centre on March 6 at 7:30 p.m. They are Saskatchewan born

Have Yourself a

Cozy "Cottage" Christmas! By Tonya Lambert

One of my family’s favourite places to spend the holidays is at our cabin. Nestled in amongst the pine trees and surrounded by a thick blanket of glittering snow, at Christmas our cabin is wrapped in a winter wonderland. It is a truly magical place to go to escape the stresses of modern living. 48

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

AT HOME

O

f course, you don’t need to own a cabin to enjoy a cottage-style Christmas. You can recreate the peace and comfort of a cabin in your home this Christmas. When transforming your house into a woodland retreat, select holiday décor that is warm and cozy, simple and natural. Your colour scheme will include lots of earth tones – greys, whites and browns – together with greens and blues. Choose a soft accent colour to bring the look together and make it truly your own. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Create an Indoor Forest Nature is the key to a cottage-style Christmas. Garlands of greenery, branches and berries can be worked into your décor.

Try adding a spring of red berries to your napkin rings. Fill a pot with birch branches strung with little white lights. Frosted pine cones can be hung from satin ribbons or used to fill bowls and vases. There are so many ways to bring the outdoors inside during the holiday season.

Warm and welcoming, simple and secure – these are the feelings engendered by a cottage-style Christmas.

Put Winter in Your Wonderland There is something about Christmas that no matter where you are in the world, your thoughts turn to snow. We might grumble at the first snowfall or scowl at the thought of shoveling it, but there is something truly magical about glistening snow at Christmas. This is especially true of a Canadian cottage-chic Christmas. Now that the stage has been set and your indoor forest created, add some wintery touches. Wrap a white skirt around your tree to simulate snow. Spray white paint on your foliage. Glittering icicles and shimmery snowflakes are also a perfect fit.

Welcome Furry and Feathered Friends No forest would be complete without some furry and feathered friends. Fill your rooms with such woodland creatures as bears, deer, squirrels, owls and other birds. Big stuffed bears with holiday bows, throw pillows with deer appliqués or owls made from pinecones add a nice touch. You may also want to consider faux fur stockings for the mantle and faux fur blankets to snuggle under.

Add Scent-sational Décor To really bring your cottage Christmas to life, you need to add some seasonal scents. Vanilla-scented candles wrapped in sticks of cinnamon or pomanders of oranges stuck with cloves are two simple yet elegant ways to breathe in Christmas cheer with every breath. Warm and welcoming, simple and secure – these are the feelings engendered by a cottage-style Christmas. Through a careful blending of natural textures, colours, materials and scents, you can capture these sensations and transform your home into a cabin this holiday season.

t was May when Dani’s world came crashing down. “I discovered that someone I trusted wasn’t the person I thought they were,” says Dani. “That realization led to the end of what was a successful business.” She was the owner of Renew Disaster Cleanup and Renew Plumbing and Heating until she was forced to close. It was a tragic loss for her and her team, but Dani remained strong throughout the process. “It was a hard decision to make, but I had the support of the Renew team, friends, family and colleagues,” says Dani. “Somehow, I’ve managed to get through it all. People that know me and my character know who I am and how I work and that has stayed intact.” One thing that hasn’t changed is Dani’s first love – real estate. Dani is still a real

estate broker and happily helping people buy and sell homes and business in the Weyburn area. “I have been working as a realtor in the Weyburn area for seventeen years,” says Dani. “It’s been exciting to focus my energy on what I love.” Dani provides the same level of great service to buyers and sellers. She prides herself on the straightforward, honest service she provides and her extensive knowledge of the real estate industry. Dani is active and present for each client she works with. Dani can handle all facets of real estate, including residential, commercial, farm/ acreage and new construction. No matter what you’re looking for, she can help. “I’m committed to renewing your confidence in real estate,” says Dani. She’s also mobile, able to meet you when and where you need to do business. Whether

you’re a first-time home buyer or looking to sell a new construction condo project, she can make your buying or selling experience fantastic. “Stay tuned,” says Dani. “Changes may be coming as I focus on real estate and possibly branch out into other home services.” If you’re heading into the Weyburn real estate market, Dani is there. THREE KEYS TO YOUR COMPANY’S SOCIAL MEDIA SUCCESS

W

hether you have a store-front business, a home-based enterprise or you hop in the truck and provide your customers with on-site service, social media is a great place to connect with current and future customers. Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn are a breeze for those with experience in this online environment. But for the rest of us, these instant communication tools can seem overwhelming to manage and intimidating to jump into. Don’t give up before you get started! You can leverage social media to build your company brand, reach new customers and engage in meaningful conversations with clients. Just keep in mind these helpful strategies: 1. Focus on Your Audience To build a meaningful presence on social media, speak with your audience rather than at them. Make sure you post educational material that would appeal to your fans, not just promote products/ services that are on sale. Ask questions that start a conversation or request the opinions of your audience. Everyone likes to have their voice heard! 2. Be Consistent and Active Owning and managing a business is a lot of work, and your ‘To Do’ list is endless. It’s tricky to find the time to make fantastic social media posts and do everything else you need to do in a day. Consider asking for help:

• Enlist your staff to come up with a list of customer’s most commonly

60

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

asked questions. These are the great beginnings for very engaging Q&A social media posts! • Follow leaders in your industry, and repost interesting articles or videos they provide. • Create a schedule of your upcoming social media posts. Coming up with ideas is the first step; mapping out when to post is step two. Make a chart, list or spreadsheet to keep on track with regular posting. It can become second nature to share the exciting, informational or thought-provoking news that relates to your business! • Use mobile tools to make posting easier. You don’t have to be at your desk in front of your computer screen to create top-notch posts. Look in the App Store or Google Play for the mobile business managers of the most common social media tools. Then, when you’re out and about, you can post live videos and pictures or re-post content to your company’s social media accounts in no time at all.

3. Find Out What Really Works Don’t just talk . . . listen to your followers. Be reflective and assess what type of social media messages your clients are reacting to positively. Give them more of it! Spend some time looking at the analytic reports to see the most engaging time of day, type of post, mobile or desktop access, paid ad or free post.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

So to recap: focus on your audience, be consistent and active, and give your followers more of what they want from your business. That’s the starting point for success with social media. Find out more ways to integrate social media into your business. Download: “The 10 Game-Changing Social Media Tactics for Small Business”: www.cfsask.ca. EXPERT ADVICE

EXPERT ADVICE

LET’S TALK ABOUT BACKUPS

W

hen was the last time you backed up your PC? Your laptop? How about your phone, your camera? Accidents happen. Why should you backup? Think about all the precious memories you have in your photo gallery. Then, something catastrophic happens and they’re all gone. What would you do? How would you feel? Then, there’s your documents: how important is the information you have stored on your equipment? Maybe you have company data, school work or tax information. Is your email file stored locally? How devastating would it be if you lost this information to viruses, theft, power surges, spillage, dropping your device or some other catastrophic event? Consequences of not backing up There are hardware and software tools out there that make data retrieval possible but they aren’t guaranteed. We’ve had to ship hard drives to our data recovery partner, and the cost can be astronomical, starting at around $100 just for them to do an assessment to upwards of $5000 or more for data retrieval. How should you back up your data? There are different ways of backing up data. You could simply copy it to an

62

R eFined WEYBURN & AREA

L-R Aaron Rubin, Michelle Senger, Travis Sonnenberg, Craig Lindsay

external hard drive. You could use “the cloud”, which is just a fancy name for the internet. (Ever wonder where exactly this data is being stored and who has access to it?) You could pay for an online backup service. (Again, check where the data is being housed.) You could install a homebased server to back up your data. No matter what you decide, keep in mind where your data is stored if a catastrophe happens. If you don’t have offsite copies of your data, everything could be lost. When should you back up your data? You want to back up smartphones, cameras, computers and tablets before any major software upgrades and after any significant changes in data like pictures or downloads or software version upgrades. It’s good practice to back up your information on a regular basis (perhaps overnight when your device isn’t in use) and as often as you deem necessary based on the amount of data you can afford to lose.

Stop in to get your bookkeeping

on track this year.

TOP TEN REASONS TO USE A BOOKKEEPER. 1.

A bookkeeper can help you get started. Are you a DIYer trying to attack all the tasks of your business, including your bookkeeping and record keeping? Have you ever sat beside your computer and not known where to start? Bookkeepers are trained to know where to start.

2.

A bookkeeper can help you organize your company. Not sure how to handle all the tasks of your business? Not sure which systems to use to track all the information needed to file taxes and keep track of inventory, invoicing, paying cheques? Bookkeepers are trained to know how to handle this.

3. A bookkeeper can do the job faster than you can. You pick

up a receipt ready to enter it and find yourself unsure of how to categorize it. Now, you need to do some research, maybe phone someone or use the internet, all of which is very time consuming. Bookkeepers are trained to know where different items belong, that is, whether they are an asset or expense, income or liability.

4. A bookkeeper understands sales taxes. There are different rules regarding provincial sales tax and the GST. Different taxes apply to different situations. A bookkeeper is trained to understand these rules.

6. A bookkeeper understands the numbers. Not sure of how it all works? How do you make a profit? What expenses can you control? A bookkeeper can help you to understand what your numbers mean. 7. A bookkeeper knows how to pay your employees. TD1, T4, income tax, CPP, EI‌ the list goes on, and it can be intimidating to the untrained. A bookkeeper knows when reports and remittances are due and how to file them. 8.

A bookkeeper can file your WCB annual and semi-annual reports. In February, Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board requires an annual report and, in July, a semi- annual update. Using your bookkeeping from the previous year, a bookkeeper can accurately file this report for you.

9. A bookkeeper can help you with cash flow. By tracking income and expenses in reports, a bookkeeper can quickly help you to see when cash flow gets tight and then help you to decide whether you need to pay things differently through the month or find different ways to increase your cash flow. 10. A bookkeeper can give you peace of mind

5.

A bookkeeper can help you control your paper flow. As a business, you are always fighting a large paper flow. A bookkeeper can help you set up filing systems to keep everything well organized. This will also free up your time so you can focus on your business, spend time with your family or enjoy some down time.

TAX ADVICE

PROPOSED PRIVATE CORPORATION TAX CHANGES

O

n July 18, the Federal Government released a consultation paper with draft legislation that represents the most significant change to the taxation of private corporations in Canada in over 40 years. During the consultation period, the Government received more than 21,000 submissions, mainly expressing concern over the proposed changes. Since the consultation deadline of October 2, the Minister of Finance has outlined the government’s response to the submissions in a series of announcements. Restrictions on Access to Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption (LCGE) The government announced it will not be moving forward with measures to limit access to the LCGE as a result of potential unintended consequences of affecting intergenerational transfers of family businesses. The government did not clarify whether the proposed changes to the tax on split-income rules (TOSI) will prevent an individual from claiming the capital gains exemption on shares that are subject to TOSI.

intergenerational transfers of businesses, including farms. In 2018, the government will continue its outreach to business owners, with the intention of developing proposals that accommodate intergenerational transfers of businesses while protecting the fairness of the tax system. Income Sprinkling/Splitting The government intends to proceed with income sprinkling changes, but will simplify the proposed measures to provide greater certainty for family members that contribute to a family business. The government will change the original proposed legislation to: • reduce the compliance burden with respect to the contributions of spouses and family members, including labour, capital, risk and past contributions;

• incentives for Canada’s venture capital and angel investors to continue to invest in the next generation of Canadian innovation will continue.

What’s Next? The proposed rules affecting private businesses are still evolving. The new draft legislation is expected with the release of 2018 Budget. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns, contact your professional chartered accountant.

• address double taxation concerns.

Passive Investments

Converting Regular Income into Capital Gains The government will not be proceeding with measures relating to the conversion of income into capital gains as a result of potential unintended consequences and potential challenges with respect to

MOTORING

MOVIE MAKERS:

CARS IN FILM By Tonya Lambert

Picture some of the most memorable movie scenes ever: Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon driving their Ford Thunderbird off a cliff at the end of Thelma and Louise (1991), Michael J. Fox traveling Back to the Future (1985) in a DeLorean time machine, Burt Reynolds leaping over Mulberry Bridge in a Pontiac Trans Am in Smokey and the Bandit (1977). What do all of these scenes have in common? Crazy cool cars!

M

ovies and motor vehicles were born around the same time, and they have grown up together over the past century. Movie vehicles can be functional, funny, futuristic or fast. Sometimes films revolve around cars and drivers, such as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) and its 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu or Days of Thunder (1990) with its eye-catching lime green Chevy Lumina. The Dodge Charger is possibly the favourite film vehicle of all: ‘The Good Ol’ Boys’, Bo and Luke Duke, tore through

Georgia in a 1969 Dodge Charger in The Dukes of Hazard (television show – 197985, movie – 2005). A Dodge Charger was used as the getaway car in the film Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974). Bill Hickman drove a 1968 Dodge Charger in the memorable chase scene from Bullitt (1968). Vin Diesel’s character Dominic in The Fast and The Furious (2001) races around in a beautiful black 1970 Dodge Charger while Furious 7 (2015) also featured a souped-up 1970 Dodge Charger. What cars captured your attention on the big screen?
