FUTURESCAPES “A Page from The Book of Night Birds flew over the edge. The edges were horizons. Bees flew over the edge. The edges were horizons. Where there were birds. New hopes flew over the horizons. Where there were bees New honey was hived in the blossoms That broke over the horizons. When I awoke, it was not morning. It was dark. I was alone in the heft of night. I was alone and mourning in the heft of night.
I looked for the stars but they were falling. They were falling like ashes, like snow and I knew I wintered in the aftermath of great disasters. Ashes and aftermaths are great disasters. These are stars from the bones and the burning…” -
From Philosophy Jesse Murry September 20, 1980

In Futurescapes, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Terry Suprean, the artist presents a large and diverse body of work utilizing the experimental artist-manufactured paints he has developed and worked with over the last decade to mimic and mirror geological processes, engage with the language of abstraction in the digital age, and probe the meaning of landscape painting in the Anthropocene. Inspired by images broadcasted from the Mars Rover and James Webb Telescope, the life cycle of glaciers, geological forces and mineralogy, satellite and biological imagining, and the history of color field painting & process art, the paintings in the exhibition suggest portals through which to imagine and come to terms with the event horizon our environment and technologies stand on. Futurescapes is accompanied by a group exhibition featuring a reunion of collaborators Suprean worked with while running Civic TV–an artist-run gallery space he founded in 2014 that used a collaborative curatorial model to develop exhibitions and performances. Presented in this group exhibition are works by artists David Janesko, Danny Kerschen, Tex Kerschen, Suzy Poling, Jon Read, William Sarradet, DOMOKOS / STARCHILDE 7, & Lisa B. Woods. Synthesized, the joint exhibitions propose a fertile field for fantasizing about our future interactions with terrestrial, extraterrestrial, social, and digital landscapes—a “body without organs” vulnerable to decolonization and evolution—an open grid for interfacing with flux potentialities.

TERRY SUPREAN Houston-based Terry Suprean’s radiant, layered paintings are the result of an experimental approach to the material nature of paint itself which contribute to a receding depth and reflective flatness in his work. Suprean’s sublime and otherworldly paintings are best approached as a genre of diaphanous landscape painting—painted flat and grown like sedimentary landscapes, his paintings start with the manufacturing of paints which use non-traditional binders and pigments (often mineral based and sourced from the earth) that allow him to develop experimental painting processes (what he calls Painting Systems) that mirror geological forces and reflect on the language of abstraction and process art. Suprean spent his early years embedded in the activist punk movements of the early 90’s playing in bands and show promoting in his hometown of New Orleans. Before being turned on to visual art by renowned Houston artist Virgil Grotfeldt in undergraduate school, Suprean was a physics major and credits this background in the sciences to the experimental and earth science-based nature of his painting practice . Suprean has also worked since 2014 as an art organizer and curator, first through Civic TV, an artist-run gallery space he founded in Houston’s warehouse district that focused on collaborative curatorial practices and exhibiting new media art and experimental music. After Civic TV closed during the pandemic, Suprean opened Ruth Street Projects—a small community-centered gallery run out of a spare room in his home dedicated to showcasing work by Houston-based artists. Suprean has lived and worked in Houston since 2005 after graduating with an MFA from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. His work has been shown widely throughout Texas and the Gulf-Coast region.

David Janesko David Janesko is an artist exploring the emergence of complexity using an experimental approach that encompasses a wide array of mediums, technology and subject matter. He is specifically interested in the genesis of life, and death, from the early Earth, the emergence of the Self and how the senses and mental illness shape reality. David grew up in Western Pennsylvania and worked for a number of years as a geologist before attending the San Francisco Art Institute (MFA, 2013). In Janesko’s series Exploring The Forest at Night with Light he exploits the enigmatic qualities of the iPhone’s camera when set in Night Mode–a mode that utilizes AI image processing software to combine multiple photos into a single image. The otherworldly neon soaked images in this series are not a product of digital editing, but are rather an expression of an AI technology attempting to solve a problem Janesko is proposing to it, and failing –during walks in the woods at night he uses lasers and flashlights to kinetically illuminate the forest, essentially analog hacking the iPhone’s Night Mode to unexpected results as it tries to imagine the scene he is creating.

Suzy Poling “Working in painting, collage, sculpture, performance, photography, sound, installation, and video, artist Suzy Poling activates a multiplicity of surfaces to summon new realms for expanding materiality and unseeable forces… In looking at the stream of visual conversations occurring within her work— whether through the lens of framing natural phenomenon, the transdimensional spaces captured through large-format renderings of miniature light and mirror sets, or through the pigmented labyrinths of her paintings — exploration permeates a process rooted in continual discovery… In thinking of Suzy’s massive artistic oeuvre-is how these otherworldly landscapes inform one another through a process of digitization

Jon Read Jon Read is a world building artist, creating serial narratives using a cast of invented characters consisting of apocalyptic warriors, angels, demons, monsters and superheroes as well as the realms and settings that they occupy. The characters and scenery have a colorful humorist cartoon aesthetic, to disarm the viewer and help deal with the darker content of the work. The work invades the viewer's space. Read’s most recent work involves experimenting with Kinetic toys, appropriating their moments and transforming into his own psychedelic life forms. Read’s pieces invoke dioramas, referencing both catholic altars, toy displays found in department store catalogs and Dark Rides/haunted houses. Jon Read has exhibited widely nationally and throughout Texas. His music project The Wiggins has played throughout the United States, and has released numerous albums.
