Dear Exhibitors and Visitors,

aus Holz, nicht aus Aluminium war das weltweit erste Elektroauto, das 1888 über die Straßen in Coburg rollte - im selben Jahr, in dem Berta Benz ihre historische Fahrt im Benz-Patentwagen mit Verbrennungsmotor unternahm und auch die industrielle Aluminiumproduktion ihren Anfang nahm. Zwei Jahrzehnte später endete vorerst die Karriere des Elektroautos, die Erfolgsgeschichte des Aluminiums ist dagegen bis heute ungebrochen.

The ﬁrst electrical vehicle that rolled down the streets of Coburg, Germany, in 1888 was made of wood rather than aluminium – the same year that Berta Benz took her historical ride in the “Benz-Patentwagen” with a combustion engine and that industrial aluminium production started. Two decades later the career of the electrical car ended for the time being, but the success story of aluminium has continued unabated until this very day.

Der Werkstoff Aluminium ist wie geschaffen für die neuen Leichtbau-Anforderungen im Transportsektor, der zu den größten Treibern für die Aluminiumbranche zählt. Aber auch die boomende Luftfahrtindustrie oder der Bausektor haben dazu beigetragen, dass die globale Produktion ein neues Rekordhoch erreicht hat.

Who would have thought that 130 years later e-mobility and aluminium meet again. As a material aluminium is ideally suited for satisfying the new lightweight construction requirements in the transport sector – one of the principal drivers for the aluminium sector. The booming aviation industry and the construction sector have also contributed to bringing global production to a new record high.

Weltweit richtet sich die Branche mit neuen Investitionen auf eine weiterhin gute Konjunktur ein – das spürt auch die ALUMINIUM 2018. Die Ausstellungsﬂäche ist erneut gewachsen. 1.000 Aussteller kommen in diesem Jahr nach Düsseldorf, 70 Prozent davon aus dem Ausland – ein gutes Zeichen für die internationale Bedeutung der Leitmesse. Die ALUMINIUM gibt auch in diesem Jahr wieder neue Impulse für die Zukunft. Unter anderem stehen die Themen „Digitale Transformation“ und „Umwelttechnik“ im Fokus, die bei der Bewältigung der Herausforderungen der Zukunft eine große Rolle spielen werden. Deutschlands Volkswirtschaft ist auch deshalb erfolgreich, weil sie über eine sehr leistungsfähige und gut vernetzte Grundstofﬁndustrie verfügt. Aluminium ist Bestandteil zahlreicher Schlüsselmarktprodukte und -technologien. Dazu zählen Luft- und Raumfahrt, E-Mobilität, Leichtbau. Der Leichtbau gehört als Schlüsseltechnologie dabei sicherlich zu den bedeutenden Märkten mit vielversprechenden Perspektiven: weniger Materialeinsatz und Masse, eine Verringerung des Energieeinsatzes und der Emissionen bei Erhalt und Verbesserung der Funktionalitäten. Der Leichtbau ist somit ein Win-WinWin für Unternehmen, Umwelt und Arbeitsplätze. Schließlich hat Aluminium extreme Vorteile im Bereich Recycling: Einmal produziert, lässt sich Aluminium immer wieder verwenden – und dies ohne Qualitätseinbußen. Alles zu einem Bruchteil der Energie, die bei der Erzeugung von Primäraluminium benötigt wird.

Meine Damen und Herren, ich wünsche Ihnen zahlreiche inspirierende Kontakte auf der ALUMINIUM 2018. Machen Sie sich selbst ein Bild von neuen Entwicklungen in der Branche und tauschen Sie sich aus. This year‘s ALUMINIUM is once again pointing the way forward. Two of the key themes of this year’s event, ‘digital transformation’ and ‘environmental technology’, will be playing a huge role in mastering the challenges of the future. One of the reasons for Germany’s economic success is the fact that it boasts a very powerful and well-networked basic materials industry. Aluminium is a component of numerous key market products and technologies, including in the ﬁelds of aerospace, e-mobility and lightweight construction.

I hope that you are able to make lots of new contacts and enjoy inspiring discussions at ALUMINIUM 2018. See for yourself what new developments the industry has to offer and share ideas. Perhaps you will even ﬁnd new business partners. It is something I would be delighted if you do. I wish you all the best for a successful ALUMINIUM 2018.

As a key enabling technology, lightweight construction is certainly one of the most important markets, and it holds tremendous promise: lower material use, reduced mass, a reduction in energy consumption and lower emissions – and all of this while not only maintaining performance, but actually improving it. As a result, lightweight construction is a win-win-win for companies, the environment and jobs. After all, aluminium has some major advantages when it comes to recycling, because once it has been produced, it can be used again and again without any reduction in quality. And this reuse requires but a fraction of the energy required to produce primary aluminium.

Sehr geehrte Aussteller und Besucher, es ist wieder „ALUMINIUM Time“. Im Oktober trifft sich die weltweite Aluminiumbranche für drei Tage in Düsseldorf auf der ALUMINIUM zu der zwölften Auflage unserer Messe und feiert sich auch ein klein wenig selbst. Seit ihrer ersten Auflage vor nunmehr 21 Jahren hat sich die ALUMINIUM nicht nur zum Branchentreff Nr. 1 und zur größten Plattform für den leichten Werkstoff weltweit entwickelt, sondern Produktion und Nachfrage nach Aluminium haben sich in diesem Zeitraum mehr als verdoppelt. Und der Boom wird weiter anhalten, auch wenn die aktuellen Handelskonflikte kurzzeitig für Irritationen sorgen. Schlüsselmärkte wie Automotive, Bau oder Verpackung werden mittelfristig Aluminium stark weiter nachfragen. Hinzu kommen neue Märkte und Megatrends wie Leichtbau und Energieeffizienz. Angesichts großer politischer und gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen wie Klimawandel, Digitalisierung, Urbanisierung oder die Mobilität der Menschen werden insbesondere von der Industrie effiziente und nachhaltige Lösungen erwartet. Die Aluminiumindustrie ist für diese Herausforderungen gut gerüstet: Bei uns werden die Produkte und Lösungen von morgen mitentwickelt. Der Werkstoff Aluminium ist als global verfügbarer und einsetzbarer Werkstoff mit immer neuen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten ein Beispiel für die technische Entwicklung im 21. Jahrhundert. Unser Anspruch und vorrangiges Ziel sind auf den Kunden zugeschnittene Lösungen aus Aluminium. Diesen Anspruch spiegelt die ALUMINIUM wider. Hier treffen sich Unternehmen, die entlang der gesamten AluminiumWertschöpfungskette wirken - von der Metallerzeugung über die Halbzeugproduktion, die Kundenindustrien sowie die Lieferanten und Ausrüster der Branche mit einer hohen Internationalisierung. War die Messe zu Beginn noch eine stark

von deutschen Ausstellern geprägte Leistungsshow, versammeln sich heute Aussteller aus mehr als 50 Nationen auf der ALUMINIUM. Auch bei den Besuchern überwiegt mittlerweile das internationale Publikum. Aus rund 100 Nationen reist die Fachwelt zur ALUMINIUM, über 950 Aussteller und rund 27.000 Fachbesucher werden in diesem Jahr auf dem Messegelände in Düsseldorf erwartet. Dear Exhibitors and Visitors, It is once again ‘ALUMINIUM time’. In October, the global aluminium industry gets together for three days in Düsseldorf for the twelfth ALUMINIUM trade show. It is also an occasion to celebrate our industry, for since taking place for the first time some 21 years ago, ALUMINIUM has not only become the industry’s number one meeting place and biggest platform for this lightweight material worldwide, but aluminium production and demand have more than doubled during the same period. And it is a boom that is set to continue, in spite of the short-term irritation caused by current trade conflicts. Key markets, including the automotive, construction and packaging industries, continue to promise strong demand over the medium-term, and these are being joined as sources of demand by new markets and megatrends such as lightweight construction and energy efficiency. In light of major political and social challenges that include climate change, digitisation, urbanisation and personal mobility, industry in particular is in need of efficient and sustainable solutions, and the aluminium industry is well prepared to meet these challenges: We are the ones developing tomorrow’s products and solutions. As a material available for use around the world, one that boasts an ever-expanding range of applications, aluminium exemplifies technological development in the 21st century. Our primary aim and mission is to provide our customers with tailor-made aluminium solutions. This mission is reflected in ALUMINIUM, as this is the place where companies from throughout the aluminium value chain get together – from metal production and the manufacture of semi-finished products to customer industries and the suppliers of goods and services for an extremely international industry. Whereas the trade show was dominated by German firms in its early years, today ALUMINIUM brings together exhibitors from

more than 50 countries. Even the event’s visitors now come primarily from outside the country. The aluminium industry travels from some 100 countries to ALUMINIUM, where they will encounter 950 exhibitors and approx. 27,000 trade visitors this year at the Messe Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre. It is an impressive afﬁrmation of ALUMINIUM’s position as one of the most successful industry shows to have been launched in recent decades. The GDA was a founding partner of ALUMINIUM, and it has continued to guide and support the show as a sponsor and source of ideas ever since. The close collaboration between the event’s organiser, Reed Exhibitions, and GDA has played a key role in the event’s ever-growing success.
