PIECE NAME Hard and Soft No.1 DESCRIPTION OF PIECE

The frame structure of the brooch is fabricated in sterling silver. Turquoise, concrete, and steel are prong set in an asymmetrical composition. The concrete is mixed with blue pigments, and molded over a used blister pack. It is then sand blasted to create a rough texture. The steel wire is wrapped into a gemstone form, which allows it to be set. The rust on the steel is sealed, and left intentionally to add to the idea of beauty in imperfection.

PIECE INSPIRATION

My experiences in both industry and handmade fields have brought up a never ending debate within me. Both craft and industry constantly inspires my designs, and allows me to discover aesthetic values in various materials. Hard and Soft No.1 Brooch is an investigation of applying alternative materials in contemporary jewelry. The stereotypical utilization of certain mediums prevents people to appreciate their beauty. The design focuses on manipulating industrial materials like concrete and steel into organic shapes in order to convey a different perspective. They are indeed unique in texture and forms, that have potentials to adorn the body.

PIECE INSPIRATION The photograph of an upside down glacier by Alex Cornell. Typically white with snow, the flipped iceberg is a deep shade of translucent blue-green. Mesmerizing but dangerous, the flipped iceberg is also indicative of global warming and subsequently changing salinity levels in the sea.

DESCRIPTION OF BRAND Olivia Shih creates sculptural jewelry for the bold and inquisitive. Her jewelry takes the form of ultralight gemstones constructed from hand-carved, reused acrylic. Striking yet classic, each piece of jewelry is sculpted to draw out the translucency of gemstones and the texture of industrial city life.

PIECE NAME Symphony DESCRIPTION OF PIECE Handmade 18� sterling silver Etruscan chain featuring an organic wrapping sterling pendant with 14kt yellow gold filigree accents.

PIECE INSPIRATION My inspiration for this piece came from my love for music, as the name of this piece suggests.

The Etruscan chain represents the audience as it is being enveloped by the pendant symbolizing the sound of the symphony. The pendant itself is the body of music, made up of individual gold filigree wires which represent the orchestra members. The sterling band wrapping around the pendant is the conductor, keeping everything together and in harmony.

DESCRIPTION OF BRAND I strive to create pieces of jewellery that are functional, yet elegant, organic (sometimes geometric) and different. Most pieces are made through fabrication methods, however casting methods are occasionally used.

PIECE INSPIRATION FLIGHT is Vicky Lew’s début collection, fueled by nature-inspired forms and the juxtaposition of these forms on the human body. Born in Malaysia and based in London, the recent Central St. Martins graduate found that living in close proximity to Hyde Park heightened her appreciation for the beauty of nature, particularly that of birds in flight.

Her aspirations were to capture the drama and majesty of this transient moment in pieces of fine jewellery.

DESCRIPTION OF BRAND A native of Kuala Lumpur, Vicky Lew graduated from Central Saint Martins, London in 2014 with a First Class Honours in jewellery design. Vicky’s design house is based in London, where she has lived for seven years and now considers home. Vicky’s design aesthetic is rooted in the classical Japanese philosophy of wabi sabi, that beauty can too be found in imperfection, impermanence and incompletion. A rose on the vine and a fallen rose on the ground are equally beautiful. Each piece is crafted with traditional Eastern sensibilities with Western design concepts, delivering strong narratives and intricate interplays between organic shapes and geometric forms.

PIECE NAME Emerging DESCRIPTION OF PIECE The Emerging brooch/pendant is a hand fabricated abstract wire constriction form. It showcases a butterfly emerging from the chrysalis. One side of its wing is stretching to be harden. 28 gauge 18 karat yellow gold wires were used to creating the chrysalis.

Oxidized sterling silver structure s indicate the emptied dry off chrysalises. The wing is fabricated with 18k gold, gradually changing from yellow gold to red gold.

PIECE INSPIRATION The piece is inspired by Nature’s beautiful designs. I am always amazed by the intelligent patterns in the work of nature. Vine like wire work becomes three dimensional line drawing that brings lightness with delicate volume expressing organically systematized form from surroundings.

PIECE INSPIRATION Doryn’s inspiration to use polished black agate for the pendant stems from her interior design work, which often featured beautifully-veined marbles and other stonework. The South Sea pearl’s setting was influenced by the ornamental Art Deco details of Rockefeller Center. The gold ball chain, meanwhile, is another echo of Doryn’s background in interior design; it’s a play on a lamp chain.

PIECE NAME 14K Gold and Sterling Silver Woven Necklace with Black and White Diamonds DESCRIPTION OF PIECE This hand forged necklace is woven with intermittent strips of 14K yellow gold and oxidized sterling silver. The front surface of each strip is textured. A bezel set pear cut black diamond is positioned in the middle of the pendant. Small white and black diamonds are flush set in some strips, and the pendant hangs on a solid 14K yellow gold chain.

PIECE INSPIRATION The inspiration for this piece is the balance we see in nature’s rugged beauty, particularly the mountains. There is so much harmony in something so rugged, and we believe this piece captures that balance. It retains an organic element yet has the elegance of refinement.

PIECE NAME NEBULA Galaxy Evening Earrings DESCRIPTION OF PIECE The design of these earrings is distinctly modern. The earrings are 2” long by 7/8” wide.

There are 1.5ct of CZs of various sizes (51 stones per earring). The interlocking spiral shapes come together to form galaxies and each earring is a galaxy. One side is set with sparkling CZs and the other has a satin finish. The 3/8” oval posts are the same signature interlocking spiral and they support the sterling wires that hold each galaxy in position. The wires allow movement.

PIECE INSPIRATION This design came into being because I wanted to add evening-wear earrings to my collection. As I took pencil to paper, I spent hours gazing at the fabulous Hubble photographs of galaxies. The infinite numbers of stars twinkling within these galaxies... the spiral shapes interacting and swirling. I HAD to create earrings with those inspirations. And because I love movement, they needed to move.

DESCRIPTION OF BRAND Looking upward to the sky helped inspire, as well as name the various stories in my jewelry collection. Cirrus clouds, nebulae, various galaxies and stars intrigue me the most. The brand is sleek and modern design, (almost Scandinavian - my heritage), and every “story” line is connected to the others by the spiral shapes that interact with each other. Each line is inspired by something different in the sky, and the entire collection revolves around “wearable elegance” for the modern woman, for every role she plays in her life.

PIECE INSPIRATION The method of Spencer Portrait gemstones incorporates photography with fine jewelry.

PIECE NAME Mariposa DESCRIPTION OF PIECE I wanted to design a statement cuff incorporating a butterfly element to it without looking like a traditional butterfly design. For this piece I used 18k rose gold and had over 2.53 carats of VS/F+ quality diamonds set in it.

PIECE INSPIRATION I prefer to design elegant and beautiful pieces that women love to wear but don’t look overly feminine. This cuff does just that; delicate and beautiful with a definite wild side. Kind of like a contradiction. There’s a lot of attitude going on here. I like to design pieces that will “steal the show”.

DESCRIPTION OF BRAND I started out in the business as a CAD designer for several manufacturers in Houston.

My husband encouraged me to start a custom jewelry business with him after he watched me design my own engagement ring. That was late 2009. We started Merida Fine Custom Jewelry in 2011. Over the next 5 years we increased our business until we had clients all over the US. Now we are branching off with my own designs as an emerging designer brand.
